League Outlines Next Steps For NHL Players

March 13, 2020 at 9:55 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

There is still a lot of confusion and uncertainty around the NHL on how long this “pause” will last, what to do in the meantime and how to best stay ready for the return of the season. Today, deputy commissioner Bill Daly released a statement to reporters including Ryan Rishaug of TSN outlining the next steps for players:

The general expectation is that players will remain in their club’s home cities absent unusual circumstances. Obviously, where a player is separated from his family because his club city residence is only temporary at this point, those players should be permitted to go home to their families in this initial phase of the pause period.

We envision there coming a time where we transition direction from “stay at home” to opening club facilities to players to work out and to skate on a voluntary basis in small groups–similar to what we generally see prior to the beginning of team training camps. At this point, I’m not in a position to say when that will be. We will see how the next week or so plays out.

No mandatory testing. If a player exhibits symptoms or becomes sick he will be tested, as appropriate.

We are recommending against informal skates during this initial phase of the pause. Once we move into the next phase and player is “training” for resumption of play, his activities will be subject to the protections afforded in his SPC.

The lack of even informal skates at this point makes sense, but also will delay any return to the ice. Not only will this pause last as long as players, staff and fans are at risk of contracting and spreading the coronavirus, but there will also be a period of “ramping up” to make sure that players are ready to return to action. Just like training camp is there to get teams ready for the regular season, a break of this length will need to be followed by a training period before full activity can resume, else injury risk may be increased.

Nikita Nesterov Expected To Re-Sign In KHL

March 13, 2020 at 9:11 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

Even as the NHL season takes a pause to try and prevent the spread of coronavirus, front offices will still be active looking for the best way to help their teams. One way to do that is review their reports on players from different leagues around the globe and decide whether they want to pursue them. Nikita Nesterov is one of those players who was drawing interest after another strong season with CSKA Moscow in the KHL. The former NHL defenseman has been gone for three seasons now, but is still just 26-years old.

Today, Igor Eronko of Sport-Express reports that though the Los Angeles Kings had actually offered Nesterov a two-year deal worth $6MM to return, he’ll instead be staying in Russia. Nesterov reportedly has an agreement with CSKA on a five-year extension, one that effectively ends any NHL pursuit for the time being.

During his time in the NHL Nesterov was a frustrating player to watch, as his obvious talent rarely produced positive results. There was always an impact player there, but too rarely did he actually show it on the ice. In 132 regular season games he had 33 points, but even in such a short time he also added 28 postseason contests (scoring seven points). No doubt the Kings were not the only team with renewed interest in Nesterov this spring, but that will no longer matter when he signs his new extension.

Instead, the focus will shift to some of his Moscow teammates. Kirill Kaprizov is obviously the most intriguing name, a Minnesota Wild prospect that seems destined to finally come to North America. But other former NHL players like Anton Slepyshev, Mikhail Grigorenko and Alexey Marchenko have also drawn some interest and could potentially sign new deals in the coming weeks. Each of them will become unrestricted free agents when their KHL contracts expire at the end of April.

Renewed NHL Interest In Mathias Brome

March 12, 2020 at 7:43 pm CDT | by Zach Leach 4 Comments

Around this time last year, there were more than just whispers that Swedish standout Mathias Brome would be making the leap to the NHL. He had just finished up a strong season in the SHL, despite playing for a poor team that ended up relegated, and was a free agent with his sights set on new surroundings. A number of NHL teams were involved, including the Vegas Golden Knights, but there was also an incredibly strong market in Europe. Brome eventually re-signed in the SHL, joining Orebro HK on a one-year deal.

Fast-forward one year and the move looks like the right one for Brome. The 25-year-old winger has had a career year in the SHL, recording 17 goals and 43 points in 52 games to finish among the top ten in the league in both categories. A speedy and skilled forward who is also known for his strong work ethic, Brome again impressed the onlookers and now he has solidified his status as a top free agent option. In fact, the Swedish Hockey News reports that he has already turned down “millions” from offers in the SHL and KHL to pursue a deal in the NHL.

Leading the charge for Brome appear to be the Vancouver Canucks and Detroit Red Wings, two teams familiar with importing Swedish talent. However, the pair are in very different situations when it comes to recruitment this off-season. Vancouver is contending for a playoff spot this year and look to have a bright future behind a young core. However, the team is strapped for cap space and would target Brome as an affordable depth addition. Detroit is the NHL’s worst team this season (and one of the worst all-time) and needs to make impact addition this summer to turn things around. Last year, Brome would have been limited to a one-year entry-level contract to begin his NHL career but now Brome will be able to negotiate his first deal. He could opt for less money but perhaps a better opportunity to win and gain even more attention with the Canucks or he could try to both make more money and land a greater role by joining the Red Wings. Brome reportedly will not make his decision until after the SHL postseason is completed, by which time other NHL teams may have also entered the chase. However, one way or another, it seems Brome is finally set to make the leap this off-season.

Minor Transactions: 03/12/20

March 12, 2020 at 6:26 pm CDT | by Zach Leach 2 Comments

Nothing could be more “minor” today than daily recalls and reassignments when the entire NHL and its minor league affiliates have closed their doors for the foreseeable future. However, for the sake of keeping things as hockey focused as possible during these trying times, here are the roster moves made today prior to or in light of the official shutdown announcement:

  • Dealing with injuries up front, the Vegas Golden Knights recalled a trio of forwards late last night: Keegan Kolesar, Brandon Pirri, and Nicolas Roy. The group are among the best per-games scorers on the AHL’s Chicago Wolves this year. However, given the NHL’s break, the team may get healthy enough to avoid using any of them once play returns.
  • CapFriendly reports that the Carolina Hurricanes have sent Morgan Geekie, the team’s sudden rookie standout, and goaltender Anton Forsberg back to the AHL’s Charlotte Checkers. Geekie recorded three goals in his first two NHL games this week and looks like another bright young prospect for the ‘Canes to build around.
  • After being called up yesterday, Colorado’s Martin Kaut, Dallas’ Joel Kiviranta, and the Rangers’ Steven Fogarty have all been reassigned today, per CapFriendly. This likely comes as a response to the shutdown. Kiviranta, signed out of Finland this summer, has played in eleven games with Dallas thus far, but has found more offense in the minors. The team would love to see signs that his scoring ability can translate to the top level before the postseason begins – whenever that is – as depth is crucial in the playoffs. Kaut is in a similar boat with the Avalanche, although the 2018 first-round pick is not as pro-tested and has not produced as well in the AHL this year. Fogarty, the veteran of this group, is in his fourth year with the Rangers’ organization out of Notre Dame and is no stranger to the up-and-down nature of his AHL depth role and is always ready to step in when needed.

U18 World Championship, Frozen Four Canceled

March 12, 2020 at 3:39 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The fallout from the coronavirus outbreak continues, this time to the amateur ranks. The IIHF U18 World Championship and the NCAA Frozen Four have both been cancelled for this year. The U18 event was set to be held later this month in Plymouth and Ann Arbor, Michigan while the Frozen Four tournament is part of a wider swath of cancelations from the NCAA. The OHL Cup, the top midget hockey tournament and the prime location for junior hockey teams to scout upcoming talent, has also been canceled.

While not unexpected, these moves will once again have an indirect effect on the NHL as teams can no longer scout the next wave of prospects. The Frozen Four especially is a chance for undrafted collegiate talent to showcase their skills, while the U18 event is always attended by scouts from every NHL organization.

One event still technically on the calendar is the IIHF Men’s World Championship, which is normally attended by NHL players that have been eliminated from the postseason. That tournament is set to start in eight weeks, but could obviously face the same fate.

NHL Standings By Points Percentage

March 12, 2020 at 2:27 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 8 Comments

One of the biggest questions now that the NHL has decided to temporarily suspend the season is what will happen in the playoffs. The league did not explain what the plan was at this point because there is no clear timeline on when the season will resume (if at all), but many have speculated about how they would decide which teams qualify should there not be time to play any more regular season games.

The prevailing thought if the season is forced to go right into the playoffs, would be that points percentage—rather than points in the standings—is how the seeding is determined.  That’s because teams have not played the same number of games to this point, with the Carolina Hurricanes and New York Islanders bringing up the rear with 68 games played, three fewer than those who have completed the most.

In that case, some interesting changes would happen to the standings. The Atlantic Division standings would stay the same, with the Boston Bruins, Tampa Bay Lightning and Toronto Maple Leafs still leading in points percentage. The Metropolitan would be where it would come into play however, as the Islanders currently have a better percentage than the Blue Jackets, despite trailing them by one point in the standings. The Blue Jackets just so happen to hold the final wild card spot in the Eastern Conference.

Over in the Western Conference there is a similar situation. The Nashville Predators are just barely ahead of the Winnipeg Jets in percentage, despite being two points behind them in the standings. The Vancouver Canucks are also just ahead of the Calgary Flames, meaning both divisions would have a swap.

Of course, none of this is certain to play out at this point. The NHL may resume the regular season and play out the dozen or so games left for each team, or may not be able to return to normal at all this year. There are also other options like a play-in tournament that some have suggested. For now, we’ll just have to wait and see what comes about in the next weeks and months. The full standings by points percentage is as follows:

Atlantic Division

x-Boston Bruins: .714, 44-14-12
x-Tampa Bay Lightning: .657, 43-21-6

NHL Temporarily Suspends 2019-20 Season

March 12, 2020 at 12:32 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 51 Comments

After a call with their board of governors, the NHL has temporarily suspended the 2019-20 season. In a press release, the league explained their decision:

In light of ongoing developments resulting from the coronavirus, and after consulting with medical experts and convening a conference call of the Board of Governors, the National Hockey League is announcing today that it will pause the 2019‑20 season beginning with tonight’s games.

The NHL has been attempting to follow the mandates of health experts and local authorities, while preparing for any possible developments without taking premature or unnecessary measures. However, following last night’s news that an NBA player has tested positive for coronavirus – and given that our leagues share so many facilities and locker rooms and it now seems likely that some member of the NHL community would test positive at some point – it is no longer appropriate to try to continue to play games at this time.

We will continue to monitor all the appropriate medical advice, and we will encourage our players and other members of the NHL community to take all reasonable precautions – including by self-quarantine, where appropriate. Our goal is to resume play as soon as it is appropriate and prudent, so that we will be able to complete the season and award the Stanley Cup. Until then, we thank NHL fans for your patience and hope you stay healthy.

Last night, the NBA took a similar step after Utah Jazz player Rudy Gobert tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19). The Jazz and several other NBA teams that had recently played them were instructed to self-quarantine, but there are also concerns that it could spread to the NHL given that teams in several cities use the same arenas for both basketball and hockey. Since then another Jazz player, Donovan Mitchell, has also tested positive.

This morning, the league issued a directive to all teams to cancel practices and media availability until a decision was made. That came after the Columbus Blue Jackets and San Jose Sharks had both already announced they would hold home games without spectators. Major League Soccer also suspended their season for 30 days, along with several other college cancellations.

It is important to note that the league has not cancelled, but suspended the season. That means it does plan on resuming at some point, though it is not clear if they will play out the rest of the regular season, move straight into playoffs or some other combination of the two. In fact, with no real understanding of how the next weeks and months will play out, there is no guarantee that the 2019-20 season even does resume.

There is plenty of uncertainty in the entire sporting world, but the NHL obviously felt it could not proceed due to the public health risk. The AHL is expected to follow the NHL’s lead and suspend the minor league season, meaning no high level professional hockey will take place in North America for the time being.

The NHLPA released a statement agreeing with the decision, noting that it is the “appropriate course of action.”

Brendan Lemieux To Have Hearing With Department Of Player Safety

March 12, 2020 at 11:32 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 3 Comments

While the NHL decides whether the season will even continue, life goes on at the Department of Player Safety. They have announced that New York Rangers forward Brendan Lemieux will have a hearing tomorrow to determine supplementary discipline for his hit on Colorado Avalanche forward Joonas Donskoi. Lemieux collided with Donskoi after the Avalanche player took a shot on net, appearing to impact his head in the process.

Obviously it’s not clear how a suspension would play out given the uncertainty around the rest of the season, but if handed out Lemieux would have to serve it at some point. Even with their loss last night the Rangers are still within striking distance of a playoff spot, should more regular season games be played.

Lemieux was given a minor penalty for interference on the play and has been suspended for an illegal check to the head in the past.

NHL Cancels Practices, Will Issue Update On Season Status

March 12, 2020 at 10:15 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 13 Comments

The NHL has issued a directive for teams to cancel all practices, morning skates and media availability today while they continue to work through their response to the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. The league’s board of governors is scheduled to have a conference call at noon according to Darren Dreger of TSN, after which there will likely be an announcement.

Last night, the NBA suspended their season indefinitely after Utah Jazz player Rudy Gobert tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19). The Jazz and several other NBA teams that had recently played them were instructed to self-quarantine, but there are also concerns that it could spread to the NHL given that teams in several cities use the same arenas for both basketball and hockey. Since then another Jazz player, Donovan Mitchell, has also tested positive.

The AHL and ECHL have also not made an announcement yet, but are expected to follow the NHL’s lead.

Brett Cyrgalis of the New York Post has tweeted that teams around the league have been told the season will be suspended, while Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic has heard that on-ice officials have been told to book flights home.
