Calgary Flames Sign Connor Mackey, Colton Poolman

The Calgary Flames have won the sweepstakes for one of the top college free agents, signing Connor Mackey to a one-year entry-level contract. The deal will kick in for the 2020-21 season, and gives the Flames another potential NHL option on defense. The team has also officially announced the signing of Colton Poolman, first reported earlier this week.

Mackey, 23, is the real prize here, as several NHL teams were pursuing him following another outstanding season at Minnesota State University-Mankato. In fact, Mackey was one of the most sought-after names a year ago before deciding to return for his junior season. The 6’2″ defenseman is a polished two-way player, who recorded 24 points in 36 games this season and was just recently named a WCHA First Team All-Star.

There are some who believe that Mackey can become a top-four NHL defenseman, given his puck-moving ability and tenacity in his own end. That dream may still be a distant thought, but there’s no doubt that the Flames have added real depth today by bringing in Mackey and Poolman.

The latter is an interesting prospect in his own right. The younger brother of Winnipeg Jets defenseman Tucker Poolman, Colton captained the University of North Dakota as a senior and recorded 17 points in 31 games.

For a Flames organization that has spent several draft picks to upgrade the NHL roster in recent years, while also graduating some of their young defensemen to the top level, there was a real need for minor league depth on the back end. Both Mackey and Poolman will have plenty of opportunity to show what they can do.

New York Rangers Sign Austin Rueschhoff

The New York Rangers have decided to bring in another college free agent, this time inking Austin Rueschhoff to a two-year entry-level contract that will begin in 2020-21. Rueschhoff just completed his third season with Western Michigan University, but has decided to turn pro.

Just by looking at the 22-year old forward you can understand why NHL teams have shown interest the last few years, as he towers over his competition at 6’7″. He has previously attended development camps with several teams, but has finally settled on the Rangers after scoring 12 goals and 26 points this season with the Broncos.

Rueschhoff isn’t the first college free agent signed by New York this spring, as he follows Patrick Khodorenko from rival Michigan State. The pair of prospects represent some extra depth for the Rangers that didn’t cost them a draft pick, though neither are guaranteed to have success at the next level.

Alex Belzile Agrees To Terms With Montreal Canadiens

The Montreal Canadiens have decided to reward minor league forward Alex Belzile with a one-year contract extension, agreeing to terms on a two-way deal for the 2020-21 season. Belzile will earn $700K at the NHL level and $225K in the minor leagues, with a $250K guarantee. That’s an impressive accomplishment for a player who went undrafted and toiled in the ECHL for years before developing into an AHL regular.

Belzile, 28, has still never seen a game in the NHL but you can bet that he’s still working towards that goal. The Canadiens clearly think he can contribute to the organization, as GM Marc Bergevin explained:

Since joining our organization, Alex has continued to impress us with his determination and work ethic. He’s a role model for the younger players we have developing in Laval. His on-ice skillset combined with his leadership qualities will help him battle for a roster spot at training camp next season.

After earning his first NHL contract just over a year ago, Belzile has unfortunately dealt with injury and was limited to just 20 games for the Laval Rocket this season. He did record 14 points in that time, but will hope to be fully healthy and contributing a full season whenever hockey resumes.

In 74 games with the Rocket in 2018-29, the Saint-Eloi, Quebec native was the team’s most consistent offensive threat, leading the club with 19 goals and 54 points.

Patrick Harper Signs With Nashville Predators

The Nashville Predators have jumped into the fray of college signings, inking Patrick Harper to a two-year entry-level contract. The young forward recently completed his senior season at Boston University and could have become an unrestricted free agent this summer, had he waited until August. Predators director of player development Scott Nichol had this to say about his newest prospect:

Patrick is a dynamic player and with his size excels in the way today’s game is played. He’s a fun player to watch – he likes having the puck on his stick, he likes to make plays and wants to score goals every game. He fits in well on the power play and uses his biggest on-ice attribute – his hockey sense – to his advantage.

That size Nichol mentions is perhaps one of the reasons that Harper wasn’t selected higher than 138th in 2016, given he stands at just 5’7″ 150-lbs.  Size wasn’t the only obstacle that the 21-year old has faced to this point however. In 2018, just after helping Team USA to a bronze medal at the World Juniors (his second appearance at the tournament, after winning gold a year prior), Harper was sidelined due to illness and missed the second half of his sophomore season with BU.

Nothing seems able to hold him back however, as the diminutive forward climbed his way back into elite company in the NCAA and was even nominated for the 2020 Hobey Baker. His 37 points in 32 games put him 14th in the country in per-game production, something he’ll try to carry over to the Predators minor league system whenever hockey resumes.

Arizona Coyotes Sign Nate Sucese

The Arizona Coyotes have dipped into the free agent prospect market once again, this time signing Nate Sucese to a one-year entry-level contract. Sucese recently completed his senior season with Penn State and was an unrestricted free agent.

The 23-year old forward finished 17th among all NCAA players in scoring this season with 38 points, another outstanding output for one of college hockey’s most consistent offensive performers. Sucese recorded at least 29 points in each of his four seasons at Penn State, using his blazing speed to regularly get around defenders. The 5’9″ winger follows teammate Brandon Biro (Buffalo) in earning an NHL contract this spring, after going undrafted out of the USHL.

Sucese will actually leave Penn State as the school’s all-time goals leader, though it’s hard to know if that nose for the net will carry over to the professional ranks. The Coyotes obviously hope it will, but many of the college signings at this time of year are more about organizational depth than anything else. Perhaps Sucese has what it takes to climb all the way to the NHL, but he’ll likely have to prove himself with the Tucson Roadrunners first.

St. Louis Blues Sign Hugh McGing

The St. Louis Blues have found some common ground with one of their college prospects, agreeing to terms with Hugh McGing on a two-year entry-level contract. McGing recently finished his senior season with Western Michigan University, where he served as an alternate captain.

Selected in the fifth round two years ago, the undersized forward was actually a Hobey Baker nominee this season and last as one of the best college players in the country. Standing just 5’9″, the 21-year old has relied on his hockey instincts and offensive ability to carve out an impressive career for Western Michigan, scoring 117 points in 147 games.

Fans of international hockey at the junior level should also recognize McGing’s name, given that he has competed for Team USA at the Hlinka-Gretzky Cup and been a participant in the selection camp for the World Juniors—though he failed to make it through the final cut. With his college days over he’ll have to see what kind of production he can come up with in the minor leagues, before chasing the dream of becoming an NHL player.

College Notes: Perunovich, Poolman, McLaughlin

Among the ten finalists for the Hobey Baker award, there are several seniors that don’t have much of a decision coming for them this summer. Their college careers are over, and they’ll be starting their professional careers in one fashion or another. Some of the others however, including St. Louis Blues draft pick Scott Perunovich, still have college eligibility remaining and could return.

The potential Blues’ prospect is one of considerable intrigue, especially after making a post on Instagram yesterday thanking his teammates and the Minnesota-Duluth program. For a player as accomplished as the UMD junior, signing his entry-level contract for 2019-20 and making his NHL debut was a possibility. With the season now up in the air, it’s unclear how the negotiations will proceed. The 21-year old defenseman had 105 points in 115 games at the college level and could be an impact player quickly for the Blues.

  • Brad Elliott Schlossman of the Grand Forks Herald reports that the Calgary Flames are a frontrunner for the services of Colton Poolman, an undrafted collegiate defenseman out of the University of North Dakota. The younger brother of Winnipeg Jets defenseman Tucker Poolman, Colton captained UND this season and recorded 17 points in 31 games. Not quite as big as his brother, the younger Poolman is also already 24 and will have to cover a lot of development ground quickly if he wants to become a regular NHL player.
  • Jake McLaughlin, another undrafted college defenseman about to turn 24, has minor league contract offers from six different teams according to AHL reporter Mark Divver. McLaughlin recently finished his senior season at UMass, scoring 14 points in 34 games. UPDATE (3/19): McLaughlin is officially off the market. The Amherst standout, who was one of the NCAA’s best defensive defenseman this season, has signed an AHL deal with the Vegas Golden Knights, per Divver. Seeing as this is a contract beginning in 2020-21, McLaughlin could technically be considered the first ever signing by the future Henderson Silver Knights, the soon-to-be-relocated version of the San Antonio Rampage, who were purchased by Vegas last month.

Seattle Delays The Reveal Of Team Name And Logo

Hockey fans desperate for news amidst the Coronavirus shutdown would have been ecstatic to find out the name of the new NHL expansion team in Seattle, which had been planned for release this month. However, they will have to wait a while longer. Seattle CEO Tod Leiweke released a statement today which included that the group has decided to relay the reveal of their name and brand. Those eager to see the logo and colors of the NHL’s 2021-22 entry will have to continue to be patient.

Leiweke did not detail why the ownership group opted to push back their planned reveal, but it is easy to formulate some possibilities. The Vegas Golden Knights held a massive reveal party when their name and logo became public, which was televised and drew much attention to the rookie club. A similar event would be impossible – or at least irresponsible – right now, especially given the severity of COVID-19 cases in the state of Washington. Secondly, the Knights also had merchandise online and in sporting good stores around North America the day after their reveal, which would have been another hurdle for Seattle if they had stuck to their reveal date. With many retail and shipping companies operating under state and federal limitations, merchandise would not be as readily available and could again harm the new team’s initial exposure. Finally, it seems from Leiweke’s statement that the group also did not want to draw attention away from what is really important right now and wanted to hold off on their big day until “the right time”.

There are thought to be as many as a dozen possible names for the expansion franchise, with Kraken emerging as a fan favorite. Other possibilities include Sockeyes, Totems, Rainiers, Emeralds, Evergreens, Sea Lions, and Seals. Whatever the choice is, the group has kept it close to the chest as there has been nothing concrete to point toward any of those possible monikers nor a potential color scheme.

While fans may be disappointed in a continued wait on Seattle’s reveal, Leiweke’s statement contained numerous other reasons to be supportive of the team. Given the current state of things, both locally and globally, Leiweke announced that the team will defer payments from season ticket purchases through June to allow those fans to focus their funds toward more important means. In another generous move, the team pledged $100K toward youth homelessness in Seattle, a cause made even more important by the current health crisis. Seattle may not have an NHL team yet, or even a name or logo, but they are already winning over their city and hockey fans around the world.

Could Coronavirus Lead To The Return Of Compliance Buyouts?

Just two weeks after the NHL announced a projected 2020-21 salary cap range that would have represented a major boost in teams’ spending power, things could not have gone in a worse direction in terms of meeting that estimation. The Coronavirus outbreak has shut the league down and there is no way to know when or if games will return this season. The league hopes to resume play and even maintains that they would like to avoid missing any games, but with each passing day that reality grows less and less likely. COVID-19 fears seem almost certain to cost games if not the entirety of the remaining regular season schedule and, in the worst-case scenario, possibly the playoffs as well. Missed games are missed revenue opportunities and the board of governors would be highly unlikely to approve a cap increase, especially of the magnitude initially projected, if they continue to suffer losses.

The last time that the NHL was forced to cancel games was in the 2012-13 lockout-shortened season. As the league and players’ association battled over collective bargaining terms, the NHL missed the first half of their season. A 48-game schedule began on January 19th, which for all involved was better than nothing but was certainly a hit to owners’ bottom lines. The 2012-13 campaign was expected to carry a $70.2MM cap hit, but that instead was a pro-rated number that in reality was just $60MM. The following season, given the lost revenue, the cap only meagerly returned to just $64.3MM, the same upper limit as in 2011-12.

Due to the unexpected stagnation of the salary cap for those two years, many teams were left under immense pressure to fit their rosters under the ceiling. In response, the NHL offered a solution: the “compliance buyout”. The compliance buyout follows the same rules as a standard buyout, allowing teams to cut ties with a player at the cost of two-thirds of the remaining value of their contract (one-third if under 26) over the course of double the length of the remaining term on the contract. The one defining difference is that compliance buyouts do not count against the salary cap. The NHL made this option available in the 2013 and 2014 off-seasons, with a limit of two per team over the two summers, and 18 teams took advantage. In fact, a number of teams are still paying off those buyouts – with a ways to go – with standouts including Christian Ehrhoff, Brad Richards, Ilya Bryzgalov, Vincent Lecavalier, and of course Rick DiPietro.

Could the compliance buyout make a return appearance should the Coronavirus outbreak continue to prevent NHL action from returning? If NHL teams end up losing revenue due to missed games, the 2020-21 salary cap limit will at best be the low end of the league’s projection, which is $84MM. And that would still be a $2.5MM increase. More likely in the case of canceled games would be the salary cap remaining at $81.5MM or only increasing marginally. Such a shift in the expected course of action would leave many teams in trouble. A report earlier today named the Chicago Blackhawks as one team that would have to make difficult roster decisions in the event of a stagnant cap, but they are far from alone. 13 teams already have $70MM+ in salary committed to 2020-21, while many of the 12 more  teams in the $60-70MM range either have key free agents to re-sign or are working with a small number of signed players. The Arizona Coyotes, who lead the pack with $79.99MM committed to just 18 players, were already hard-pressed to deal with an $84MM salary cap, nevertheless a continuation of the current $81.5MM. They would be left in a nearly impossible situation, unless offered a way out.

As such, it seems like a strong possibility that the compliance buyout could make its triumphant return. While the league does not want to address the “what if” of missed games at this point in time, should it reach the point where that result is inevitable, compliance buyouts will certainly become a hot topic. Whether the league would go about the process in a similar manner as they did last time around remains to be seen. They might instead offer a one-time shot this summer in light of NHL Expansion in 2021 that should get the salary cap back on track. It’s too early to tell, but as we all wait out the Coronavirus, it’s worth wondering whether the league could bring back an old device to mitigate the lasting effect of the pandemic.

Vancouver Canucks Sign Will Lockwood, Marc Michaelis

The Vancouver Canucks have convinced one of their most interesting draft picks to sign well ahead of the summer deadline. Will Lockwood, who could have become an unrestricted free agent in August, has signed a two-year entry-level contract. Lockwood recently finished his senior season at the University of Michigan. GM Jim Benning released a short statement on the forward:

Will is a hard-working, two-way winger with natural scoring ability. He plays with urgency and creates chances for himself and his teammates. We look forward to adding his speed and tenacity to our roster.

The Canucks have also landed college free agent Marc Michaelis, signing him to a one-year entry-level contract. Michaelis, 24, just ended his college career with an outstanding 44-point effort in his senior season at Minnesota State University-Mankato. The German-born forward is actually a top-ten finalist for the Hobey Baker Award, given annually to the best college hockey player in the nation. Benning also gave a short statement on the free agent signing:

Marc has exceptional offensive instincts and proven leadership. We look forward to adding his skill and play-making ability to the franchise.

Both players represent potential NHL talent for the Canucks, something that not every signing at this time of year can claim. Lockwood, drafted 64th overall in 2016, captained Michigan this year and has previously represented the United States at several international competitions. While he stands just 5’11” 172-lbs, there’s absolutely no quit in Lockwood’s game and he has proven willing to engage physically and battle in the corners when necessary. Just 21, he may be ticketed for the minor leagues to start his professional career but could very well push for a chance with the Canucks before long.

Michaelis is a very interesting prospect in his own right and has scored at basically every level. Starting in the German minor hockey system he was a star with Mannheim’s junior program before coming over to North America and producing in both the NAHL and USHL. Jumping to the college level didn’t slow him down, as Michaelis scored 36 points in 39 games as a freshman. His 162 points in 148 games for Minnesota State actually put him second on the school’s all-time scoring list, while his 71 goals put him first. Not only can he score at even-strength and on the powerplay, but Michaelis also set a school record with ten career shorthanded goals.

It’s hard to know if this kind of production will translate for the 5’11” forward, but betting against him hasn’t worked in the past. He’ll be 25 this summer, but already does have a taste of playing against professionals. In six games at last year’s World Championship, Michaelis scored twice.
