Winnipeg Jets, Dallas Stars Recall “Black Aces”

In sports, there is a nickname for everything. Today one of those names is being used in both Dallas and Winnipeg, as the Stars and Jets have recalled their “Black Aces.” This is a group of players from the minor and junior leagues that will come up to practice during and experience the NHL playoffs, without much of a chance to actually get into game action. It gives them a perspective on life at the highest level, while also allowing for time with NHL skills coaches. This time is often be called invaluable for young players, who get a taste of what it will take to get to and succeed at the NHL level.

Since the Texas Stars and Manitoba Moose both failed to qualify for the AHL playoffs, Dallas and Winnipeg have called up a large group of players. For Dallas, that group is as follows:

F Joel L’Esperance
F Nick Caamano
F Adam Mascherin
D Gavin Bayreuther
D Dillon Heatherington
D Joel Hanley

Among the group are several familiar names that have spent time at the NHL level, but Mascherin may be the most interesting member. Originally selected by the Florida Panthers in the second round (38th overall) of the 2016 draft, the scoring winger decided not to sign. He was subsequently drafted by the Stars in the fourth round (100th) last June, and started his professional career this season. It went pretty well, as Mascherin recorded 18 goals and 44 points in 75 games for Texas and actually tied for the team lead in +/- with a +10 rating.

For the Jets, the group will be made up of:

D Cameron Schilling
D Logan Stanley

Again there are several names that have already made their NHL debuts, including Vesalainen who notably forced a short recall before exercising his European Assignment Clause to play in the KHL this season. The 19-year old is a big part of the future for the Jets but will need to find some stability in his development moving forward.

There is always a chance that a few of these players could be forced into action due to injury or poor play from someone on the NHL roster, but more likely they’ll spend the next few weeks soaking in a playoff run from the outside.

New Jersey Devils Sign Gilles Senn

The New Jersey Devils have added some more goaltending depth, signing Swiss netminder Gilles Senn. The team signed the 23-year old to a two-year entry-level contract that begins in 2019-20 and likely means Senn is ready to come over to North America after a successful European career.

Senn is a fifth-round pick of the Devils from 2017, and has spent his entire career to this point in Switzerland playing for Davoc HC. He recorded just a .901 save percentage there this season but that was at least partially due to the team’s overall struggles. The 6’5″ goaltender has shown plenty of promise, even performing extremely well in his two appearances at the most recent Spengler Cup.

There’s no doubt that this is a project for the Devils and not a goaltender that can step into an NHL role anytime soon, but it will give them another minor league option should MacKenzie Blackwood graduate to New Jersey. The team also has a strong Swiss presence already with Nico Hischier and Mirco Mueller, giving Senn some people to reach out to as he transitions to life in North America.

Carolina Hurricanes Sign Jacob Pritchard

Wednesday: The Hurricanes have officially announced the contract, noting that it will begin in the 2019-20 season and pay Pritchard $750K at the NHL level. GM Don Waddell released a short statement about his newest player:

Jacob had a very productive year playing for one of the top teams in college hockey at UMass. He was highly effective on the power play this season and we’re excited to see what he can do at the professional level.

Tuesday: Cale Makar drew a lot of the attention for the University of Massachusetts this season, and deservedly so, as the Hobey Baker winner proved last night that he is a truly elite player ready to make an immediate difference at the NHL level. However, he was not the only difference-maker on a Minutemen squad that made their first ever National Championship Game appearance this past weekend. Now, another key player is being recognized for his pro potential. According to UMass head coach Greg Carvel, graduate forward Jacob Pritchard has signed an entry-level contract with the Carolina Hurricanes.

While the Hurricanes have yet to officially announce the deal, Carvel is the most trusted source there is when it comes to Pritchard. The two share a close bond, as it was Carvel who originally recruited Pritchard to St. Lawrence University and coached him through his first year of college hockey. After Carvel left for Amherst, Pritchard played two more years for St. Lawrence before transferring to UMass to again play for his old coach. And it was this season with the Minutemen that he truly broke out and showed NHL upside. Pritchard recorded 47 points in 41 games while skating on UMass’ top line with All-American Mitchell Chaffee. While Chaffee and Makar received more accolades, Pritchard quietly finished tied for fifth in the NCAA in scoring, just two points behind Makar and five points ahead of Chaffee. He also tied for fourth overall in college hockey in assists.

Pritchard, 24, is only able to sign a one-year entry-level deal. Unlike Makar, it seems highly unlikely that the Hurricanes will rush to play their new addition in the postseason, meaning the team will get to take next season to evaluate the mature prospect before deciding what his next contract will look like. In the meantime, expect Pritchard to join the AHL’s Charlotte Checkers on an amateur tryout basis to continue his season in the minor league playoffs. In Pritchard, Carolina is getting a smart, creative offensive player. The left winger has strong offensive instincts, developed over time with the U.S. National Team Development Programs, two junior leagues, and two college programs. While his game is in his puck possession in open space and quick decision-making to set up goals, he can also attack the net and notched 16 goals for UMass this year. With an experienced game and versatile skill set, Pritchard should be able to adapt well to the pro game. The only question left is whether this late bloomer can continue to grow his game to the point that he can make an impact in the NHL. For that, he picked the right place, as Charlotte has had great success under head coach and assistant GM Mike Vellucci and the Hurricanes have reaped the benefits of well-prepared prospects. This bodes well for Pritchard at the next level.

Fortunately for UMass fans, this was an expected departure and will likely be the last core player to leave this off-season. Although Chaffee had a great season, he is an undrafted prospect and only a sophomore and it would be a surprise to see him turn pro. San Jose Sharks draft picks Mario Ferraro and John Leonard are also sophomores are there has been little talk of either signing this summer. A pair of standout freshmen, defenseman Marc Del Gaizo and goalie Filip Lindberg, stand a decent chance of being selected in June in their second time through the NHL Draft, but neither one would then turn pro immediately. The losses of Makar and Pritchard will certainly be felt, but otherwise the team will return the bulk of their lineup next season, plus top recruit and presumptive mid-round draft pick Zachary Jones. The ride is not over in Amherst.

Snapshots: Sandelin, Maclean, Wilder

Fresh off his third straight National Championship Game appearance and second straight NCAA title, University of Minnesota-Duluth head coach Scott Sandelin has been handed another prominent coaching position and deservedly so. NHL.com’s Mike Morreale reports that Sandelin has been named the head coach of the USA Hockey entry into the 2020 U-20 World Junior Championships. Team USA, which has medaled in each of the past four World Juniors, has often been led by an NCAA coach, including Sandelin himself back in 2005. In this past tournament, in which the team finished with the silver medal, Sandelin served as an assistant to Mike Hastings, his in-state rival from Minnesota State University, but a change is in order. USA Hockey, led by GM John Vanbiesbrouck, have made the move to Sandelin, who has a clear track record of winning in recent years. Sandelin was excited to accept the position, stating:

The World Junior Championship is one of the greatest hockey tournaments on the calendar each year and it’s an honor to represent our country as head coach. Last year, we fell just short of our goal, so to have the opportunity to come back and get another chance at helping our country win a gold medal is exciting. The expectation for the United States in this tournament is to contend for gold and I’m excited to begin the process towards continuing the success those before us have established.

  • Paul Maclean is heading back behind the bench. The Jack Adams Award-winning former NHL coach is expected to be named the head coach and general manager of the QMJHL’s Cape Breton Screaming Eagles, Sportsnet reports. Maclean, a native of nearby Antigonish, Nova Scotia, will replace Marc-Andre Dumont in both roles, after he was fired today following the team’s playoff exit. Maclean last coached in 2016-17 as an assistant for the Anaheim Ducks, but spent four seasons as the head coach of the Ottawa Senators, including his Jack Adams campaign in 2012-13, and had previous stops as an assistant with the Detroit Red Wings and a prior stint with the “Mighty Ducks” as well. His addition is a major boost for Cape Breton, a club without much of a winning history. The Screaming Eagles are still looking for their first QMJHL Final appearance since joining the league in 1997 and hope that Maclean can take them there and potentially win them a title.
  • It’s going to be an embarrassment of riches in net for the Boston College Eagles for the next few years. Despite losing star keeper Joseph Woll to the pros, the Eagles were already set to add Spencer Knight out of the U.S. National Team Development Program as their new starter next season. Knight is considered a generational talent in goal and expected to be first-round pick in this year’s NHL Draft. However, the Eagles also landed a 2020 commitment today from Henry Wilder, recently tabbed by NHL Central Scouting at the No. 14 draft-eligible goalie in North America. While that ranking doesn’t necessarily mean that Wilder will be drafted, it is a distinct possibility. Either way, BC will undoubtedly have one of the top young tandems in all college hockey, if not all of amateur hockey, in two years time. If Knight lives up to his billing in the NCAA, he is unlikely to last four years with the Eagles, but Wilder is now an excellent fallback plan. The athletic young netminder just finished a strong season at The Hotchkiss School in Connecticut and will have one more year of development under his belt before arriving at BC to form a formidable duo with Knight.

AHL Notes: Redmond, Vellucci, Lukosevicius

The AHL regular season has come to an end, with the Calder Cup playoffs getting underway on Thursday, and the league has begun to announce their end-of-the-year awards. The first player to be honored is long-time pro Zach Redmond. The AHL has announced that Redmond is this season’s recipient of the Eddie Shore Award as the best defenseman in the league. The 30-year-old, who has played on an AHL contract this season with the Rochester Americans, recorded 21 goals and 50 points in just 58 games. While Redmond finished third in overall scoring among defensemen, he was first in goal scoring and led qualifying defenders in points-per-game by a wide margin. A veteran of 133 NHL games to go along with 314 AHL games, Redmond is a respected leader at the minor league level, but has also shown to be a high-end producer with back-to-back seasons of 40+ points. One has to think that there is a good chance that Redmond receives a two-way offer from an NHL club this summer after proving his ability to be a valuable AHL depth asset.

  • Another AHL award winner is Charlotte Checkers head coach Mike Vellucci. Vellucci, who also doubles as an assistant general manager for the Carolina Hurricanes, was named the Louis A.R. Pieri Memorial Award recipient as the top coach in the league. Vellucci led the Checkers to their best regular season in team history with 110 points and the top seed in the Eastern Conference. In fact, their 51-17-7 record was a top-ten all-time mark in AHL history. Most importantly, in just two years on the job Vellucci has graduated a number of player to the Hurricanes who have become impact players, including Lucas Wallmark, Warren Foegele, and Haydn Fleury, with the likes of Martin Necas, Jake Bean, Aleksi Saarela, and Janne Kuokkanen likely to push for spots next season. The long-time head coach and GM of the OHL’s Plymouth Whalers, who has now found success at the pro level, it seems likely only a matter of time before Vellucci earns a larger role either behind the bench or in the front office of an NHL team.
  • The Grand Rapids Griffins, affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings, have made a nice addition right before the start of the postseason. The Griffins announced that they have added University of Denver forward Jarid Lukosevicius on a tryout basis for the remainder of the season. On top of that, Lukosevicius has signed a two-year AHL contract beginning next season. The 24-year-old winger just wrapped up his fourth and final collegiate season with the Pioneers and his third in a row with double-digit goals and assists and a plus rating. The all-around contributor lacks size or high-end skill, but makes up for it with an impressive motor and great hockey IQ. Lukosevicius projects to be a capable pro who may even develop into a bottom-six option for the Red Wings down the road.

Cale Makar scored his first NHL goal in his first NHL game last night for the Colorado Avalanche, with it eventually becoming the game-winning tally in a 6-2 victory. While the fans in Colorado may feel like giving him the Conn Smythe already, the accountants of the team may have something to say about that. CapFriendly tweets out the interesting performance bonus structure of Makar’s deal, which includes a $25,000 bonus for playing in five playoff games, a $107,500 bonus for playing in his tenth playoff game, and a $787,500 bonus for winning the Conn Smythe as playoff MVP.

Obviously Makar winning a trophy like that is incredibly far-fetched, but it does just add another layer to his outstanding debut. The young defenseman is expected to take on a substantial role with the team next season and doesn’t seem to be afraid of anything. Nathan MacKinnon even told reporters today (video via Altitude Sports Radio) that the 20-year old was calling for the puck on the play that resulted in his first career goal.

  • The Minnesota Wild have announced a new 10-year extension on their lease of the Xcel Energy Center, which will now extend through 2035. The team did not find much success on the ice this season, but is still a thriving organization in one of the best hockey markets in the world and will now have some extra stability moving forward. The arena opened back in 2000 when NHL hockey returned to Minnesota in the form of the expansion Wild, and has housed them ever since.
  • Alex Turcotte has been added to Team USA for the upcoming U18 World Championship, set to kick off later this week in Sweden. The 18-year old forward is expected to be a top draft selection this June, ranking fourth on the final Central Scouting rankings among North American players. Turcotte was dealing with an injury recently but looks like he’ll be able to take part in the tournament that is often a final showcase for draft-eligible prospects.

Victor Hedman Still Out For Tampa Bay Lightning

The Tampa Bay Lightning are on the brink of elimination. After a season that saw them lose just 16 games in regulation, the team is down 3-0 in their series against the Columbus Blue Jackets and will need to win four straight to avoid a historic collapse. Unfortunately, they won’t have their best defenseman in the lineup to help out. Victor Hedman has been ruled out again by head coach Jon Cooper, who also notes that Anton Stralman will not play and Alex Killorn is a game-time decision.

Hedman was injured against the Washington Capitals on March 30th and missed the final few games of the regular season, but suited up in the first two games of the series. Even though he was on the ice the Norris-caliber defenseman was clearly not up to his lofty standards, and now could potentially watch his team get swept out of the first round without being able to help. The Blue Jackets have a chance to make history by knocking the Presidents Trophy winners out in four games, and will do it on home ice.

Luckily, if you can call it that, the Lightning will get some help back in the form of Nikita Kucherov. The potential Hart Trophy winner will be back after missing game three due to suspension, and will try to get his first points of the season and help Tampa Bay stave of elimination. Kucherov has been a solid playoff performer in the past, recording 58 points in his first 58 postseason games but now has just a single assist in his last six going back to last season.

Andrei Svechnikov In Concussion Protocol

The Carolina Hurricanes could very well be without one of their young stars for the next game in their opening round series against the Washington Capitals. Andrei Svechnikov is in the concussion protocol after going to the hospital following his fight with Alex Ovechkin last night. Svechnikov was hit hard by a punch from Ovechkin and appeared to hit his head on the ice as he went down. Head coach Rod Brind’Amour told reporters today including Isabelle Khurshudyan of the Washington Post that he doesn’t expect Svechnikov to play in game four on Thursday night.

The 19-year old Svechnikov had taken his game to another level in the second half of the season and playoffs, and actually had three points in the first two games of the series. It’s a big blow for a Carolina team that has gotten themselves back into the series with a convincing win, and one that certainly will shake up their forward group. Micheal Ferland also left the game with an injury but his status was not updated today.

Carolina trail in the series 2-1 and have a big hill to climb, but have exposed some weaknesses on the Capitals blue line and will try to exploit that again in Thursday’s matchup. Even if Svechnikov feels up to it, he’s unlikely to get back into the lineup as the team will not risk the future health of the second-overall pick.

Minor Transactions: 04/16/19

As NHL teams continue to journey closer to the Stanley Cup, the AHL will kick off their own playoff push in a few days. The minor league playoffs are nearly as grueling and can see key players disappear at a moment’s notice if their NHL club needs them. Organizations will also be making some final moves to recall those who didn’t qualify for the Calder Cup playoffs, giving them some extra depth for the next few weeks. As they do, we’ll be right here to keep track.

  • Jared Coreau will serve as third goaltender for the St. Louis Blues after being recalled today. Coreau spent the season in the minor leagues playing for two different teams, but failed to find much success on either one. He won’t be needed unless injury occurs.
  • With Andrei Svechnikov and Micheal Ferland both dealing with injuries, the Carolina Hurricanes have recalled Patrick Brown under emergency conditions. Brown was set to start his AHL playoff series with the Charlotte Checkers on Saturday, but may have to help the Hurricanes instead as they deal with injuries. Svechnikov is in the concussion protocol, while Ferland’s status has not yet been updated.

Offseason Keys: Ottawa Senators

While the playoffs are now underway, many teams have already started their offseason planning.  What storylines lie ahead around the league in what is shaping up to be a likely busy NHL offseason?  Our Offseason Keys series begins with a look at the Ottawa Senators.

After a rough 2017-18 season, the Senators were expected to struggle mightily in 2018-19.  They received some criticism for opting to not retain their first-round pick for 2019 last summer, instead opting to keep their 2018 selection (fourth overall) which they used on winger Brady Tkachuk.  While they finished at the bottom of the standings, their pick slid to fourth in the draft lottery this week so that decision isn’t under as much fire as it would have been had it remained at number one.  GM Pierre Dorion blew up his roster as expected, selling off three core players at the trade deadline to add several draft picks and prospects.  They’re very clearly in rebuilding mode but as it turns out, they may very well be making some moves that go against that premise this offseason.

Hire A Head Coach

The first thing that’s likely on Dorion’s to-do list is to pick a new head coach after Guy Boucher was dismissed shortly after the trade deadline.  Veteran Marc Crawford took over on an interim basis down the stretch and while Ottawa’s point percentage didn’t jump too significantly (.417 compared to .390 under Boucher), the team looked to be playing with more jump, something that several veterans alluded to as well after being in a very rigid system previously.

Is that enough to justify keeping Crawford in that role?  At 57 and having lost his job quickly the last two times as a head coach in Los Angeles and Dallas, he’s not necessarily going to be a long-term option for them.  Does Dorion necessarily need to look for someone that he expects to be a fixture for many years to come though?  If he feels they’re still a few years away from contention, could Crawford (or another veteran) serve as a short-term placeholder?  That could potentially pave the way for someone like Troy Mann (AHL Belleville’s head coach) to stay where he is for a couple more years and work with more of their younger players before ascending to the NHL.

While this is ongoing, the team is also looking for someone to act as President of Hockey Operations.  However, that search is not expected to affect the coaching situation; Dorion has the green light to make a hire even if the other role isn’t filled by then.

Defensive Decisions

With Thomas Chabot taking a huge step forward in his second NHL season and the acquisition of top prospect Erik Brannstrom as part of the deal that saw winger Mark Stone go to Vegas, the Senators have a strong foundation to build from.  However, the supporting cast isn’t as strong and will need to be addressed in the near future.

The first key decision that will need to be made revolves around Cody Ceci.  The pending restricted free agent carries a $4.3MM qualifying offer but it appears that the focus is on a long-term contract with the 25-year-old acknowledging that talks on that have already started.  Ceci’s value has been a hotly-debated topic as while he plays a big role for Ottawa, he doesn’t rank particularly well when it comes to puck possession where he is consistently below average.  Accordingly, some wonder if a long-term deal would be in Ottawa’s best interest.  If a deal can’t be reached, then they’ll have to decide on his short-term future as he’ll only be a year away from UFA eligibility with the potential for a near-$5MM price tag in salary arbitration.

After that, there aren’t many options under contract that qualify as potential core players.  Youngsters Christian Jaros, Christian Wolanin, Maxime Lajoie, and Andreas Englund have had opportunities with varying degrees of success but are likely best served as role players.  Ottawa also has three other returning players with one year left on their respective contracts in Mark Borowiecki, Dylan DeMelo, and Ben Harpur.  Again, all three aren’t top-four options on a contender so Dorion will need to decide if he wants to keep any of them around beyond next season.  If not, he may turn to the trade market to free up a spot or two for some of those younger players.

Spend To The Floor

Rebuilding teams don’t typically chase after veterans and take on expensive contracts.  However, the Senators may very well wind up doing that this summer.  They have just over $45MM committed for next season per CapFriendly and aside from Ceci, none of their pending free agents are likely to sign a contract of significance.  Center Colin White had a strong season but his track record likely isn’t strong enough for a long-term deal which makes a bridge contract more likely.

In other words, simply re-signing their own players isn’t going to get them close to the salary cap floor which is believed to be around the $60MM mark depending on how high the cap ceiling is set.  And this is with veteran wingers Clarke MacArthur and Marian Gaborik remaining on the books in full even though their NHL careers are confirmed to be over and likely over, respectively, allowing insurance to cover a portion of their deals.

With that in mind, expect Ottawa to come up in discussions with teams that are looking to clear up cap space where the Senators can try to leverage another young asset or two in exchange for taking on an unwanted deal.  If that falls through, it wouldn’t be surprising to see them discuss players on the back end of a front-loaded contract given their budgetary restrictions.  If not, they could wind up being more active in free agency than it may seem where they’d target short-term contracts.  No matter which way they go, expect some veterans to be heading to Ottawa in the coming months.
