Vancouver Canucks To Sign NCAA Free Agent Griffen Molino

March 27, 2017 at 2:11 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

After reporting that Matt Iacopelli would sign with the Chicago Blackhawks, John Buccigross of ESPN also tweets that teammate Griffen Molino will be headed to the Vancouver Canucks. The undrafted Western Michigan forward will apparently turn pro after just his sophomore year at the university.

The 23-year old Molino was the second-highest scorer on WMU this season (behind Iacopelli) after leading the team in his freshman year. With good speed and solid playmaking ability, Molino is a dangerous distributor on the Broncos’ powerplay. Often playing the point, he can find players all over the ice when it looks like nothing is there.

At the next level though, those cross-seam passes will be harder to complete and Molino will have to adjust his game accordingly. Stronger on the puck than his 5’11” 171-lbs frame would suggest, he does seem ready to play against bigger competition. It will be interesting to see if the hockey sense and passing ability will carry over to the faster AHL game.

Matt Iacopelli To Sign With Chicago Blackhawks

March 27, 2017 at 1:34 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

The Chicago Blackhawks may have missed out on Vinni Lettieri earlier today, but they are close to locking up another one of their own prospects. According to John Buccigross of ESPN Matt Iacopelli will sign with the ’Hawks now that Western Michigan has been eliminated from the NCAA tournament.

A former dominant scoring threat in the USHL, Iacopelli was drafted in the third round by the ’Hawks in 2014. This season saw him breakout at the college level with 20 goals and 36 points, leading the Broncos in scoring. Though he was only in his second year of college, Iacopelli will turn 23 in May and is likely closer to his peak than many other prospects.

With an NHL-ready shot, Iacopelli can score from just about anywhere in the offensive zone if given the time and space. It’s creating that space that will give him trouble at the next level, as though he’s big enough and has been billed as a power forward since his draft year, he sometimes lacks the ability to grind below the goal line and force opponents into mistakes.

He’s entering an organization who has continued to excel at turning NCAA prospects into high-caliber NHL players, as most recently evidenced with John Hayden’s transition to the league. If Iacopelli commits to learning their systems and playing whichever role they lay out for him, it’s not unthinkable that he’ll find success at the higher levels.

Snapshots: Coyotes, Zykov, Kapanen

March 27, 2017 at 1:13 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Arizona Coyotes have been embroiled in a battle for their future for years, most recently leading to an exchange of angry words between league commissioner Gary Bettman and the state legislature. Now, John Shannon of Sportsnet reports that Randy Frankel may be a new name stepping into the ownership circle in the desert.

Frankel is a minor shareholder for the Tampa Bay Rays of the MLB, and has previously been connected to the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks. According to Shannon he would join as a potential partner to Andrew Barroway, the current majority owner of the Coyotes.

  • The Carolina Hurricanes have sent Valentin Zykov back to the AHL following his return from injury. The young forward was recalled earlier this month and played two games with the ’Canes before suffering an upper-body injury and sitting out for the past eight. The 21-year old scored a goal in his NHL debut, but will go back and refine his game further with a playoff run in Charlotte.
  • After Kasperi Kapanen was recalled by the Maple Leafs earlier today it wasn’t clear whether he would make his debut Tuesday night against Florida or not, as he bounced up and down the lineup during practice. There is no doubt now, as Kapanen himself told Kristen Shilton he’ll be playing. Kapanen had been waiting patiently for a call up after his taste last season, and will now finally get his shot. “It’s better now than never,” he told Shilton.

Prospect Notes: White, Stevens, Keller

March 27, 2017 at 11:10 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

Even though Colin White signed an amateur tryout yesterday with the Ottawa Senators, it doesn’t necessarily preclude him from signing his entry-level deal this year and playing for the team down the stretch. Bruce Garrioch of Postmedia is reporting that the front office will watch him play for Binghamton this week and continue negotiations.

For what it’s worth, Garrioch guesses that White will sign an ELC once the Senators have a playoff spot locked up. With the team currently eight points up on the ninth place team, it won’t take long. Should White sign his ELC for this year, he will burn a year regardless of how many games he plays.

  • The New York Islanders have signed John Stevens from Northeastern, inking the captain to a two-year entry-level deal. The son of the Los Angeles Kings’ associate head coach, Stevens scored 28 points in 25 games in his final year. A big defensive centerman, Stevens is a possible option for a bottom-six in the NHL down the road. While he doesn’t have the high-end offensive ceiling that some of his teammates have, his game will likely translate nicely to the professional ranks.
  • CapFriendly notes that newly signed Clayton Keller will earn a $25K bonus should he play five of the last seven games for the Arizona Coyotes. Despite not actually paying a ton of salary this season, the Coyotes are actually over the salary cap and are using long-term injured reserve space. This means Keller’s bonus would appear as a penalty for next season.

Sparks, Kapanen Recalled Amid Frederik Andersen Injury Concerns

March 27, 2017 at 10:08 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

After Frederik Andersen was pulled from Saturday night’s Maple Leafs game during the first intermission, fans across the city of Toronto assumed the worst. Mike Babcock came out after the game saying that it was the Buffalo Sabres doctor that thought Andersen should come out, and though Darren Dreger reported today that the goaltender had been removed for the concussion protocol, that did not necessarily mean he had suffered one.

Today, Andersen was out working before Leafs practice alone and Garret Sparks was at practice with the team according to David Alter of The Athletic. Sparks has been with the AHL Marlies all season, and has found much success there with a .927 save percentage through 26 games. Andersen would return for practice, meaning the Maple Leafs are currently carrying three goaltenders. The team has also recalled Kasperi Kapanen from the AHL, who would be making his season debut if he plays tomorrow night.

Kapanen was part of the young group of rookies the Maple Leafs called up near the end of last season, though hasn’t gotten the same chance this year. In the AHL all season, Kapanen has 43 points in 43 games and looks as ready as he’ll ever be to make the jump to the NHL level. Acquired in the Phil Kessel deal before last season, the speedy winger was once a first-round draft pick by the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The Maple Leafs will be without Josh Leivo and Nikita Soshnikov still, meaning Kapanen could get into the lineup as soon as Tuesday night against the Florida Panthers. Still looking for his first NHL point, it’s unclear if he’d slot into the vacant fourth line spot, or be placed in an offensive role right away.

Jeff Taylor Signs Two-Year Deal With Pittsburgh Penguins

March 27, 2017 at 9:08 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Pittsburgh Penguins have come to terms with a 2014 draft pick, inking Union College standout Jeff Taylor to a two-year, entry-level contract that will begin next season. For now, Taylor will report to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the AHL on an amateur tryout contract.

Taylor was selected in the seventh round of the 2014 draft after winning the NCAA championship in his freshman year at Union, and recently finished his four years by putting up 33 points in 38 games while serving as alternate captain this season. The defender was once known for an extremely risky play style, disregarding his position and carrying the puck through traffic. He has since developed a more two-way game, though his defensive ability still lags a bit.

If the Penguins can get him into their system that allows offensive defensemen to play to their strengths while continuing to develop the defensive side, he could thrive. A bit undersized, he’ll have to rely on his instincts and positioning more than physicality at the professional level.

Monteal Canadiens Sign Victor Mete To Three-Year Deal

March 27, 2017 at 9:05 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Montreal Canadiens have inked one of their most recent draft picks, coming to terms Monday with Victor Mete on a three-year, entry-level contract that will begin in 2017-18. Mete will stay with the London Knights for the time being as they are locked in a battle with the Windsor Spitfires in the first round of the OHL playoffs.

Mete broke out this year for the Knights, scoring 15 goals and 44 points in 50 games from the blueline, jumping ahead of last year’s fifth-overall pick Olli Juolevi. While he’s not considered to have the all-around upside Juolevi possesses, Mete’s offensive game is just starting to develop into what the Canadiens had hoped for. Relying on his unbelievable speed and agility to recover, Mete often joins the rush and finds himself deep in enemy territory. He won’t be able to get back as easily on professional players, meaning he may have to tone down his attacking style at the higher level.

Developing that first pass out of the zone will be key for him, as he is sometimes a little too eager to carry it himself. If that time and space is taken away in the faster professional ranks, it will be interesting to see how he adapts. His coverage in the defensive zone is actually quite good, though he lacks the physical size to really lean on defenders or remove them from the puck. He’ll have to rely on his quick feet and anticipation more than anything else.

If the Knights are eliminated in the first round (the series is tied 1-1 as of Monday morning), Mete may find himself playing a game or two on an amateur tryout in the AHL. It is unlikely though that we will see him in the professional ranks next season, as he would have to crack the NHL squad because of his age. The AHL will not be an option in 2017-18, meaning London might see a 19-year old Mete quarterbacking their powerplay once again.

Snapshots: Penguins Injuries, Couture, Haley

March 26, 2017 at 9:02 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

Penguins center Evgeni Malkin did not skate on Sunday as he continues to recover from a shoulder injury.  Head coach Mike Sullivan noted to Jonathan Bombulie of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review that the off day was a scheduled one and not a setback in the recovery process.  Malkin has missed the last six games as a result of the injury and there remains no timetable for his return.

While Malkin (along with winger Carl Hagelin who has a lower body issue) didn’t skate, several other injured Pittsburgh players took to the ice.  Defensemen Trevor Daley (knee), Ron Hainsey, Kris Letang (both upper body injuries), and Olli Maatta along with winger Jake Guentzel (concussion) all took to the ice although they did so before the team took to the ice to prepare for tonight’s game against the Flyers.

Winger Scott Wilson returned to the lineup for the Penguins after missing Friday’s game with an undisclosed issue.  However, the team lost winger Conor Sheary midway through the first period after he blocked a shot with his hand and he did not return.  Following the game, Sullivan told reporters, including Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (Twitter link), that Sheary is day-to-day.

Other news from around the NHL:

  • Sharks winger Logan Couture was taken to hospital on Saturday after taking a puck to the mouth against the Predators. CSN Bay Area’s Kevin Kurz reports that Couture was able to travel home with the team.  However, a source tells Kurz that the injury is a bad one which suggests he’s likely to miss some time.  The injury comes at a tough time with the playoffs fast approaching and the team struggling considerably at the moment having lost six straight games.  On the season, Couture sits third in team scoring with 25 goals and 27 assists in 73 contests.  An update on his condition is expected on Monday.
  • Still with the Sharks, winger Micheal Haley will have a phone hearing on Monday regarding an incident against the Predators, the NHL’s Department of Player Safety announced (Twitter link). Haley was assessed a match penalty on the play, which occurred with just over seven minutes remaining in the third period.  Haley has played himself into a mostly regular role with the Sharks this season, picking up a career best 11 points and 110 penalty minutes (fifth league-wide) in 54 games.  San Jose next plays on Tuesday so a decision will have to be made whether or not to uphold or rescind the match penalty by then.

Senators Sign Colin White To Amateur Tryout Agreement

March 26, 2017 at 8:11 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

The Ottawa Senators have inked center Colin White to an amateur contract agreement (ATO) for the remainder of the season, reports Stephen Whyno of the Associated Press (Twitter link).  He will immediately report to their AHL affiliate in Binghamton.

White was the first round pick (21st overall) of the Sens back in 2015 and just finished his second season at the collegiate level with Boston College.  In 35 games this season, he had 16 goals and 17 assists to sit third in team scoring.  He also played a key role for the USA at the World Juniors, scoring seven goals in as many games to help lead them to the gold medal.

The Senators had been hoping White would turn pro for a while now but part of the holdup stemmed from discussion over whether or not he would burn the first year of his entry level contract this season or have the deal start in 2017-18.  Although there’s an agreement in place to join Binghamton now, it doesn’t preclude White signing and starting this season as this is only an AHL contract.  As a result, those talks will likely continue but at the very least, this will allow White to begin his professional career as early as Wednesday when they host Syracuse, the AHL affiliate of Tampa Bay.

College Notes: White, Vecchione, Foo, DeSimone

March 26, 2017 at 7:50 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose 2 Comments

The Senators are making progress in contract discussions with college center Colin White, his agent, Kent Hughes, told Postmedia’s Bruce Garrioch (Twitter link).  The 20 year old was Ottawa’s first round pick (21st overall) back in 2015 and recently finished his second season at Boston College.  It has been reported for a while that they would like White to turn pro although the disagreement stems from when the contract should start.

If White signs starting next season, he would only be eligible to play at the minor league level on an amateur tryout deal but the Sens would get the three full years on his entry level contract.  However, if they were to sign him to a deal that started right away, he’d be eligible to play down the stretch and in the postseason.  However, White would reach restricted free agency (and a bigger pay day) one year sooner, something the team didn’t seem to be too interested in as of a few days ago.

Other notes from the NCAA:

  • With Union College being eliminated from the NCAA tournament, center Mike Vecchione is expected to draw plenty of interest. Among the teams that are high on signing him are the Flyers who are among the contenders to land him, reports Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer.  The 24 year old senior tied for the lead in NCAA scoring, recording 63 points (29-34-63) in just 38 games.  Vecchione has taken part in four different development camps over his career including ones with the Flyers and his hometown Bruins.  Carchidi notes that the forward is close to signing and that his goal is to play in the NHL this season, meaning that whoever signs him would have to burn the first year of his entry level deal right away.
  • Vecchione isn’t the only Union free agent that’s expected to generate interest. Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reports that right winger Spencer Foo and defenseman Nick DeSimone will receive interest, including from several Canadian teams.  Foo finished just one point behind Vecchione while DeSimone set new career bests in goals (nine) and points (19).  Both players still have one year of college eligibility remaining so it’s not a guarantee that either will opt to turn pro.
