DEL’s Dusseldorfer EG Signs Tyler Angle

August 23, 2024 at 8:34 am CDT | by Josh Erickson Leave a Comment

Düsseldorfer EG of Germany’s Deutsche Eishockey Liga have signed center/left winger Tyler Angle, per Tobias Kemberg of D.Sports. It’s a one-year deal for the Niagara Falls native, who heads overseas early in his career.

Angle, 23, had spent the last four years playing in the Blue Jackets organization. He played mostly for their AHL affiliate, the Cleveland Monsters, but he did log two games with Columbus in each of the past two seasons.

Early on, Angle looked like he might be a gem after falling to the seventh round of the 2019 draft, selected on the heels of a strong season with the Ontario Hockey League’s Windsor Spitfires. With the OHL pausing its operations for 2020-21 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Angle turned pro early on an amateur tryout with the Monsters. He immediately made an impact, posting 11 goals and 24 points in 23 games, leading the team in scoring during the shortened campaign.

Angle’s entry-level contract with the Blue Jackets went into effect in 2021-22, but the 5’10”, 172-lb forward never regained his scoring touch. His point-per-game production nearly halved, limited to 11 goals and 37 points in 71 contests the following year. By last season, Angle was no longer a fixture in the Cleveland lineup, only playing in 40 of 72 games and recording 16 points (eight goals, eight assists) with a -11 rating. On the heels of that performance, the Jackets opted not to issue him a qualifying offer when his ELC expired this summer, making him an unrestricted free agent.

His brief NHL usage did yield a goal, coming against the Sabres on April 14, 2023. He posted a -3 rating across his four appearances, five shots on goal, and an average of 9:54 per game while going 11-for-27 in the dot (40.7%).

Angle joins a Düsseldorf club headlined by former Avalanche defenseman Kyle Cumiskey on the back end. He’ll reunite with center Justin Richards, who played out 2022-23 with the Monsters on a two-way deal with Columbus and signed a deal with the German side earlier this month.

Blue Jackets Reassign Tyler Angle

March 29, 2024 at 11:19 am CDT | by Josh Erickson Leave a Comment

The Blue Jackets have returned center Tyler Angle to AHL Cleveland, according to a team announcement Friday.

Angle, 23, played in Columbus’ last two games after they recalled him under emergency conditions Tuesday. The 2019 seventh-round pick averaged 8:20 per game but was held without a point. He went 3-for-9 in the faceoff dot and recorded five hits with no shots on goal. It wasn’t his first showing in the NHL, though – he scored his first major league goal in a two-game trial last season.

His return to Cleveland suggests a couple of currently injured Blue Jackets forwards may re-enter the lineup Saturday in the second half of their home-and-home against the Penguins. Yegor Chinakhov and Alexander Nylander are listed as day-to-day with upper-body injuries and have not been ruled out of tomorrow’s contest.

Angle is already in his fourth season of professional hockey. One of the older players in his draft class with a Sep. 30 birthday, the Niagara Falls native made the jump to pro hockey with Cleveland in the COVID-shortened 2020-21 campaign, where he burst onto the scene with 11 goals and 24 points in only 23 games. Angle’s offensive production has been much more conservative in the seasons following, though, averaging less than half a point per game. He’s notched seven goals and eight assists for 15 points in 34 games this season.

The speedy 5’10” forward is in the final season of his entry-level contract, which carries a cap hit of $851K. While in the minors, he earns a $70K salary. If the Blue Jackets extend him the $814K qualifying offer he’s due this summer, they’ll retain his signing rights as an RFA.

Blue Jackets Recall Tyler Angle

March 25, 2024 at 8:30 pm CDT | by Josh Cybulski Leave a Comment

The Columbus Blue Jackets have announced that they’ve made an emergency recall from the Cleveland Monsters and are bringing up forward Tyler Angle to the NHL roster.  The 23-year-old made his NHL debut last year in April with the Blue Jackets, recording his first career NHL goal in his second career game on April 14th, 2023, against the Buffalo Sabres.

Angle hasn’t seen NHL action since his two-game audition last April and is in the midst of his fourth consecutive season in the AHL with the Monsters. Thus far this season in 34 games, the former seventh-round pick in the 2019 NHL entry draft has seven goals and eight assists. Throughout his AHL career, Angle has 40 goals and 59 assists in 194 career AHL contests.

The Blue Jackets forward ranks have been decimated by injuries in recent weeks which led to Angle getting the emergency recall. Columbus is without the services of forwards Kent Johnson, Adam Fantilli, Justin Danforth, Yegor Chinakhov and Sean Kuraly due to injury and is also without Patrik Laine who is out indefinitely after entering the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program.

Angle is unlikely to be with the Blue Jackets for an extended period as Kuraly and Chinakhov could be back in the lineup over the next week or two barring any unforeseen setbacks.

Blue Jackets Assign Six Players To AHL

April 15, 2023 at 10:26 am CDT | by Brian La Rose 1 Comment

Following the conclusion of their regular season last night, the Blue Jackets wasted little time making some roster moves.  Following that contest, they announced (Twitter link) that they’ve returned defensemen Samuel Knazko, Stanislav Svozil, and Billy Sweezey along with forwards Tyler Angle, Joona Luoto, and Mikael Pyyhtia to AHL Cleveland.

Knazko made his professional debut in North America this season and has suited up in 49 games with the Monsters this season, picking up a goal and 20 assists.  He got into two contests with Columbus this month, averaging a little under 16 minutes per night of playing time.

Svozil spent most of this season with Regina of the WHL where he had a very productive season, picking up 11 goals and 67 assists in 56 games; his 78 points were the third-highest in the league.  He actually has yet to play in the AHL but also has suited up twice for Columbus, recording an assist in his debut on Thursday while logging over 20 minutes a night.

As for Sweezey, he has had a bit more experience in Columbus, suiting up in nine games for them this season, picking up an assist along with 39 hits and 20 blocked shots in his first taste of NHL action.  He has 11 assists in 55 contests in the minors this year.

Angle is nothing if not consistent.  He has 11 goals with Cleveland this season, matching his output from 2020-21 and 2021-22 in the process.  He also now has his first NHL tally in the books after scoring on Friday against Buffalo.

Luoto has been back and forth between the two clubs in recent weeks.  He got into seven games with the Blue Jackets this year in his first NHL action since the 2019-20 campaign with Winnipeg while he has collected 14 goals and 11 assists in 45 games with the Monsters.

Lastly, Pyyhtia spent the bulk of the year playing in Finland with TPS Turku of the SM-liiga before being assigned to Cleveland last month.  He has played in six games with the Monsters so far, scoring three times while he picked up an assist in his two games with Columbus.

All six players will have an opportunity to play in two more games this weekend as the Monsters wrap up their season.  However, with none of them available to play for Cleveland last night, they lost to Utica, eliminating them from playoff contention.
