Leon Muggli

Metropolitan Notes: Flyers, Koppanen, Muggli

April 5, 2025 at 8:45 pm CDT | by Paul Griser 1 Comment

Despite their massive struggles down the stretch – which resulted in the firing of coach John Tortorella – Flyers GM Daniel Briere sees light at the end of the tunnel and is willing to potentially part with first round picks to get his team over the hump, per Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic. As LeBrun reports, Briere told The Athletic last week that the goal for the franchise is not just compete or “squeeze into the playoffs,” but rather be a contender year in and year out.

With three first-round selections in this year’s upcoming draft (including two they acquired via trades) and four second-round selections, Briere may have the assets needed to bring in NHL-ready talent. Briere noted he likes having the opportunity to make the Flyers more competitive as soon as possible. As the team has firmly been in a rebuild the last several seasons, it stands to reason Briere and President of Hockey Operations Keith Jones (both Philly legends in their own right) would now look to expedite the process. Briere took over as GM of the Flyers on March 17, 2023 and in the 2023-24 season, the upstart Flyers impressed to the tune of a 38-33-11 record, narrowly missing the playoffs but showcasing the potential of the roster. However, the team came falling back down to earth this season and currently hold a 30-36-9 mark on the year. After dismissing Tortorella, Briere noted the organization needed to move to the “next chapter.” It appears that chapter may also include selling off draft assets to improve the current roster.

Elsewhere in the Metropolitan:

  • The Pittsburgh Penguins have reassigned Joona Koppanen to the AHL, per Seth Rorabaugh of the Tribune-Review. Koppanen was recalled on April 3 and suited up in Pittsburgh’s 5-4 overtime loss to the St. Louis Blues, registering 11:24 of ice time. While he has made appearances in three separate NHL seasons between the Boston Bruins and Pens, Koppanen, 27, has suited up for just 15 career NHL games. With Pittsburgh all but out of the playoff race this season, he seemed primed a larger opportunity to showcase his talents. However, with Pittsburgh recently calling up prospects Ville Koivunen and Rutger McGroarty, and with fellow youngsters like Vasili Ponomaryov, Sam Poulin, and Tristan Broz awaiting their turn, Koppanen’s chances may have once again taken a hit.
  • The Washington Capitals have re-assigned defender Leon Muggli of the Swiss National League to their AHL affiliate, per a team announcement. Muggli, the team’s 2024 second round selection, is not expected to play for Hershey tonight or on Sunday. The 18-year-old, left-handed defenseman has registered 11 points in 40 games for the EV Zug. The Switzerland native represented his country at the 2025 World Junior Championship, serving as an alternate captain and recording three assists in five games. Last season, Muffli’s 12 points were the most ever by a defenseman age 17 or younger in Swiss National League history.

Capitals Loan Leon Muggli To EV Zug

August 6, 2024 at 8:17 am CDT | by Josh Erickson Leave a Comment

The Capitals have officially loaned 2024 second-round pick Leon Muggli back to Switzerland’s EV Zug for 2024-25, the team announced today. The National League club said last month that they were in discussions to take the 18-year-old defenseman back on loan for this season after he signed his entry-level contract with Washington.

It will be Muggli’s second season with the big club after spending his entire development process in the Zug system, suiting up for their U-15, U-17 and U-20 teams since 2019. Last year, his first professional season, he became a depth fixture on the Zug blue line with 12 points (3 G, 9 A) and a +13 rating in 42 games.

The smooth-skating two-way defender was Washington’s third choice of the 2024 draft class, following winger Terik Parascak at No. 17 and diminutive defenseman Cole Hutson at No. 43. Muggli came off the board at No. 52, a pick the Caps acquired from the Golden Knights in last season’s Anthony Mantha trade.

With the loan, Muggli’s entry-level contract will slide to next season as expected since he won’t see any NHL action. If he plays fewer than 10 NHL games in 2025-26, the deal could slide again to the 2026-27 campaign, meaning he won’t be an RFA for the first time until 2028-29. That likely scenario will result in his cap hit reducing from its initial $940.8K to $875.8K due to signing bonuses being paid out in the 2024-25 and 2025-26 campaigns (contract details via PuckPedia).

Muggli returns to a Zug squad that won back-to-back NL titles in 2021 and 2022 but has been eliminated in the semifinals in two straight years. Their roster is dotted with a few former NHLers, including Gabriel Carlsson, Gregory Hofmann, and Fredrik Olofsson.

Prospect Notes: Murashov, Rashevsky, Muggli

July 13, 2024 at 1:56 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose 2 Comments

Penguins prospect Sergei Murashov told reporters including Matt Vensel of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that he plans to make a decision soon on where he’ll play next season.  The 20-year-old spent most of last season with Yaroslavl’s junior team and fared quite well, posting a .930 SV% in 34 regular season games and a .927 mark in 19 playoff contests.  Murashov was a fourth-round pick in 2022 and his contract is now expired although Yaroslavl still has control of his rights.  He’ll have to decide as to whether to stay with them, try to find another team in Russia (one that could give him more KHL ice time), or if the time is right to come to North America and play in Pittsburgh’s system.

Other prospect news from around the NHL:

  • The Jets are having discussions with winger Dmitri Rashevsky about signing him to an entry-level deal, Mike McIntyre of the Winnipeg Free Press relayed (Twitter link) earlier this week. The 23-year-old was a fifth-round pick back in 2021, going 146th overall and has been a KHL regular ever since.  Rashevsky is coming off his best season in Russia, tallying 24 goals and 19 assists with Dynamo Moskva in 67 games last season.  He has one year left on his deal but with some Russian players getting let out of their KHL agreements, Winnipeg is hoping they’ll be able to get Rashevsky out of his early as well.
  • Earlier in the week, the Capitals agreed to terms on an entry-level deal with defenseman Leon Muggli. However, he won’t be playing in Washington’s system right away as his team in Switzerland – EV Zug – announced that they’re in discussions with the Caps to have the 18-year-old loaned back to them for the upcoming season.  Muggli has two years left on his deal with Zug and played a regular role for them in 2023-24, recording a dozen points in 42 regular season games.  Assuming the loan goes through, his contract will slide and will still have three years left on it heading into 2025-26.

Capitals Sign Leon Muggli To Entry-Level Deal

July 10, 2024 at 8:01 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

7/11: Washington has confirmed the signing according to a team announcement.

7/10: The Capitals have been active in recent days when it comes to signing their prospects.  The latest to receive a contract is Leon Muggli as PuckPedia reports (Twitter link) that they’ve signed the defenseman to a three-year, entry-level contract.  The deal will carry a cap hit of $941K and an AAV of $975K; the difference being $102.5K of games-played bonuses in the agreement’s first year.

The 18-year-old was a second-round pick by Washington last month, going 54th overall.  Muggli spent most of the season with EV Zug in Switzerland’s top division where he had three goals and nine assists in 42 games; his 12 points were the most ever by a defenseman aged 17 or younger in league history.  Muggli also suited up for the Swiss internationally at the World Under-18 Championship as well as the World Juniors.

It’s worth noting that Muggli still has two years left on his deal in Switzerland.  At this point, it makes the most sense for him to remain with Zug for those seasons, allowing him to play a regular role while staying at home.  Assuming that happens, Muggli’s contract is eligible to slide twice and still have three years remaining on it heading into the 2026-27 campaign as long as he doesn’t play in ten or more NHL contests in either season.
