Pittsburgh Penguins Re-Sign Trotman, Czuczman
The Pittsburgh Penguins have found some common ground with a pair of pending free agents, signing Zach Trotman and Kevin Czuczman to matching two-year, two-way contracts. Both deals carry a $700K salary at the NHL level.
Trotman, 28, has never quite landed a full-time NHL role, but after being selected in the seventh round and battling for years in college and the minor leagues, even getting to this point was a long shot. The big, physical defenseman played 13 games for the Penguins last season and has suited up 83 times in his entire career, and very well may not add many more to that number next season. Pittsburgh already has seven defensemen on one-way deals with Marcus Pettersson still to sign.
The same could be said about Czuczman, who has played even fewer NHL contests since being signed out of college by the New York Islanders—coincidentally the same one Trotman attended, Lake Superior State University. In fact, Czuczman hasn’t played an NHL contest since 2013-14, and instead is now a leading figure on the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. In 65 games last season he recorded 21 points while serving as an alternate captain.
Neither of these signings will have a huge impact on Pittsburgh’s season, but do give the team some added depth on the blue line if they face injuries. For now, you can expect both to start the season in the minor leagues provided of course that they clear waivers at the end of training camp.
Pittsburgh Penguins Place Kevin Czuczman On Waivers
Monday: Czuczman has cleared waivers and can now be assigned to the AHL should the Penguins decide to do so.
Sunday: The Pittsburgh Penguins have placed defenseman Kevin Czuczman on waivers today, according to TVA’s Renaud Lavoie. He suffered a shoulder injury during training camp and was placed on season-opening injured reserve.
The 27-year-old, who is expected to be out until December, had to go through the formality of waivers at some point and with the defenseman’s continued progression through his shoulder injury, it makes sense to do it now. He has already been with the AHL team throughout the early part of the season of his recovery.
Czuczman spent all of last year with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in the AHL, finishing with four goals and 35 points in 71 games. Entering his fifth season in the AHL, he will be brought back slowly and eventually placed on one of WBS’s top defensive lines after he is fully healthy. Czuczman chose to re-sign with a one-year, $650K contract with Pittsburgh just before free agency opened this summer.
Pittsburgh Penguins Sign Three Players
The Pittsburgh Penguins have announced three new contracts for pending free agents, agreeing to terms with Dominik Simon and Daniel Sprong, while re-signing Kevin Czuczman. Sprong and Simon have agreed on identical two-year deals that will carry a cap hit of $750K per season, while Czuczman has signed a one-year two-way deal worth $650K at the NHL level.
Getting Simon and Sprong under contract for such low salaries is a huge win for the Penguins, who plan on using both of them more frequently in 2018-19. At the end of the season, GM Jim Rutherford revealed that Sprong would be a “regular” on the team going forward, something that fans have been clamoring for for some time. Sprong jumped directly to the NHL in 2015-16 for 18 games, before returning to junior and then the minor leagues. He registered three points in eight games for the Penguins in 2017-18, but could be a potential candidate for a breakout in his first full season if given a regular spot next to one of Pittsburgh’s elite centers.
Simon got a taste of what it’s like to play with those elite centers, spending time with Sidney Crosby and scoring 12 points in 33 games with the Penguins this year. The 23-year old is a capable two-way player, and is valuable depth at this cap hit. The Penguins are always looking to squeeze cheap performance out of the bottom half of their roster, given that their star players take up so much of the cap. Simon and Sprong will be given the chance to do that, while still being cheap enough to come completely off the books if sent to the minor leagues.
Minor Transactions: 12/9/17
As usual, Saturday is set to be a busy one with 24 teams in action which means there should be a fair bit of roster juggling throughout the day. We’ll keep tabs on those moves here.
- The Coyotes have loaned goaltender Marek Langhamer to HC Kometa Brno of the Czech Extraliga, reports Craig Morgan of Arizona Sports (Twitter link). This alleviates a logjam between the pipes at the AHL level with Adin Hill and Hunter Miska already with their AHL affiliate in Tucson plus veteran Michael Leighton who is on loan to Vegas’ farm team in Chicago. Arizona will retain Langhamer’s rights while he is on loan.
- Pittsburgh has flipped depth defensemen, announcing that they have assigned Frank Corrado to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the AHL while recalling blueliner Kevin Czuczman. Corrado had only been recalled on Thursday and didn’t see any action since then. As for Czuczman, he leads the Baby Penguins in points by a defender with 14 through 22 games. He last saw NHL action back in 2013-14 with the Islanders, who had signed and played him immediately after his collegiate season ended.
- Sonny Milano‘s back-and-forth season continues. The Blue Jackets announced that they have recalled the winger from Cleveland of the AHL. He has spent the bulk of the season with Columbus, tallying ten points in 24 games while adding a pair of assists in two minor league contests.
