NHL Prospects Receiving NCAA Conference Awards

March 21, 2019 at 8:33 pm CDT | by Zach Leach Leave a Comment

Tomorrow night kicks off the final weekend of conference tournaments in the NCAA, with Selection Sunday setting the stage for the NCAA Tournament beginning next week. With the collegiate regular season a thing of the past, the conferences haves used the gathering of their top teams ahead of this weekend’s games as a chance to hold end of the year banquets and announce award winners. To no surprise, many notable NHL prospects were also among those honored.

Perhaps the top pro prospect in the NCAA and the favorite to win the Hobey Baker Award this year, it was predictable that Cale Makar (COL) would first be unanimously named the Hockey East Player of the Year. The dynamic defenseman was the No. 4 overall pick by the Avalanche two years ago and has lived up to the hype through two seasons at the University of Massachusetts. Makar was one of six UMass players to also be named all-league players, including Mario Ferraro (SJ) and John Leonard (SJ) and scoring champion Mitchell Chaffee. 2018 first-round pick Joel Farabee (PHI) was named Hockey East’s Rookie of the Year following a point-per-game freshman campaign for Boston University. Similarly impressive teenager Cayden Primeau (MTL) was named Goaltender of the Year, backstopping Northeastern University with a .935 save percentage and 2.02 GAA. Providence College’s Vincent Desharnais (EDM) and the University of Maine’s Chase Pearson (DET) were also honored as the Defensive Defenseman and Defensive Forward of the year, respectively.

In the Big Ten Conference, recent Red Wings signing Taro Hirose (DET) out of Michigan State University was named Player of the Year, as well as scoring champion as the NCAA’s leading point-getter. The University of Minnesota’s Sammy Walker (TB) was named Freshman of the Year after the seventh-round pick surprised many this season. Quinn Hughes (VAN) of the University of Michigan and Evan Barratt (CHI) of Penn State University were other notable Big Ten stars, earning first-team all-conference considerations.

Elsewhere, a trifecta of NHL hopefuls won both Player of the Year and Defenseman of the Year for their conference. Adam Fox (CAR) is the most notable, as the Harvard University product enjoyed yet another dominant year in the ECAC and could be an impact player immediately once he joins the Hurricanes. Jimmy Schuldt hopes to do the same wherever he ends up, as the priority free agent from St. Cloud State University was named both Player of the Year and Defensive Defenseman of the Year for the NCHC and will push for a National Championship this year before turning his attention to the pros. Finally, Atlantic Hockey’s undisputed top player was Joe Duszak (TOR) of Mercyhurst University, who recently signed with the Maple Leafs after leading all NCAA defensemen in scoring.

Other awards of note include the University of Minnesota-Duluth’s Scott Perunovich (STL) winning the NCHC’s Offensive Defenseman of the Year Award for the second year in a row and Cooper Zech (BOS) being named the WCHA’s Rookie of the Year despite already leaving Ferris State University after just one year for the AHL’s Providence Bruins. With the NCAA postseason still to come, there will be more honors on the way for college hockey’s top players, but the conference awards already show that the best of the collegiate ranks includes many NHL draft picks and free agent signings, who will hopefully go on to continue their strong play at the next level.

Ten Finalists Named For 2019 Hobey Baker Award

March 20, 2019 at 1:02 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 3 Comments

The first round of voting has come to an end, and the ten finalists for the Hobey Baker Award have been named. 83 players were nominated for the award this year, and a fan vote was added to the opinions of NCAA head coaches to determine the final ten names.

The trophy is given to the top NCAA player in the country, and has an impressive line of winners over the past few years. In 2013-14, Johnny Gaudreau took home the award as a junior for Boston College, followed by Jack Eichel in his only year for Boston University in 2015-16. Jimmy Vesey, Will Butcher and 2017-18 winner Adam Gaudette don’t bring quite the same impact, but look like they’ll each have long NHL careers.

The award also has several top NHL alumni in its small fraternity, including Neal Broten, Tom Kurvers, Paul Kariya, Chris Drury, Ryan Miller and Brendan Morrison. With that group behind them, this year’s winner is certainly not someone to take lightly.

The finalists are as follows:

Joseph Duszak – Mercyhurst University (Toronto Maple Leafs)

Adam Fox – Harvard University (unsigned, Carolina Hurricanes)

Taro Hirose – Michigan State University (Detroit Red Wings)

Quinn Hughes – University of Michigan (Vancouver Canucks)

Mason Jobst – Ohio State University

Cale Makar – University of Massachusetts-Amherst (unsigned, Colorado Avalanche)

Patrick Newell – St. Cloud State University

Chase Priskie – Quinnipiac University (unsigned, Washington Capitals)

Jimmy Schuldt – St. Cloud State University

Nico Sturm – Clarkson University

Jimmy Schuldt Will Return To St. Cloud State For Senior Year

April 30, 2018 at 4:12 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

Though he had several teams pursuing him over the last few weeks, Jimmy Schuldt is expected to head back to school for one more season. That’s according to Michael Russo of The Athletic, who reports that Schuldt had “plenty of free agent interest” but will try to win a National Championship as a senior in 2018-19. The undrafted defenseman has been on the NHL radar for quite some time, and was a top-10 finalist for the Hobey Baker trophy this season as one of the nation’s best players.

Russo reported earlier this season (subscription required) that as many as 22 teams had reached out to Schuldt, including the Minnesota Wild, while Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet linked him to the Montreal Canadiens back in November. He had attended Canadiens development camp in the past, and was an obvious target to help their blue line. After 38 points in 40 games anyone can understand the NHL interest, which is sure to resurface next spring as he closes out his NCAA career.

Schuldt isn’t your prototypical offensive defenseman despite his big point total this season, instead generating chances with his big shot and focusing more on the defensive side of the game. Though no college prospect is completely polished, Schuldt comes with built in leadership ability and poise and should be able to step right into the NHL without much trouble after next season. His ceiling may be a little lower than some other dynamic offensive talents that have turned pro over the last few seasons, but he’ll almost certainly be a useful player at the professional level.

For St. Cloud State, his return is a huge boost for a program that lost its head coach recently. After Don Lucia left his position at the University of Minnesota, it was filled by luring Bob Motzko away from St. Cloud after a 13-year stint with the program. Brett Larson has taken over as head coach of the Huskies, and will likely lean on Schuldt all season as his captain and veteran presence on the back end.

Top-10 Finalists Announced For 2018 Hobey Baker

March 14, 2018 at 12:35 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 3 Comments

The Hobey Baker Memorial Award is given to the most outstanding player in collegiate hockey, and has a long list of excellent NHL players among previous winners. Will Butcher, Jimmy Vesey, Jack Eichel and Johnny Gaudreau are the latest to take home the award, while others like Brendan Morrison, Paul Kariya and Chris Drury have been honored in the past.

Earlier this year, 67 players from the NCAA ranks were nominated for the award, and today that number has been reduced to just ten. These ten players will be narrowed to just three, a process that anyone can be a part of by participating in the fan vote. Votes will be added to the decision from a selection committee to produce three finalists, from which a winner will be crowned.

The top-10 finalists are as follows, with the NHL organization who owns their draft rights in parenthesis:

Henrik Borgstrom, University of Denver (Florida Panthers)

Ryan Donato, Harvard University (Boston Bruins)

Matthew Galajda, Cornell University

Adam Gaudette, Northeastern University (Vancouver Canucks)

Dylan McLaughlin, Canisius College

Cale Morris, University of Notre Dame

Colton Point, Colgate University (Dallas Stars)

Jimmy Schuldt, St. Cloud State University

Dylan Sikura, Northeastern University (Chicago Blackhawks)

C.J. Suess, Minnesota State University-Mankato (Winnipeg Jets)

Snapshots: NCAA, Fines, Tolvanen

March 9, 2018 at 3:10 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 5 Comments

The NCAA is a breeding ground for NHL talent these days, and over the next few weeks the top free agents will be snapped up by clubs all across the league. Michael Russo of The Athletic (subscription required) reports that two names in particular are getting a ton of interest.

Daniel Brickley of Minnesota State has apparently been contacted by 30 teams, while Jimmy Schuldt from St. Cloud State has spoken to 22. Both players went undrafted and can sign with a team as soon as their collegiate season ends, though both are juniors and could potentially return to college for another year. Both are left-handed defensemen who could step into an NHL lineup with little development, and they both will turn 23 before the end of the regular season.

  • The NHL handed out embellishment fines to both Nick Cousins and Brad Marchand, for their second incidents of the season. The first time a player is caught embellishing by the league, he is given a warning. Now, Cousins and Marchand will have to pay $2,000 and could face stiffer penalties if it continues. On the fifth such incident, the player’s coach starts to be fined as well.
  • Eeli Tolvanen continued his dominance of the KHL today, scoring two goals to send Jokerit to the next round. That will unfortunately delay his appearance in the NHL even further. Adam Vingan of the Tennessean reports the earliest Tolvanen’s season could now end is March 20th, but could play even later than that if Jokerit keeps winning. The outstanding young sniper has seven goals in six playoff games after finishing the regular season with 36 points in 49 games.

College Notes: Vegas, Schuldt, Butcher, Flyers

March 19, 2017 at 2:15 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

Although many have speculated that the Golden Knights would be highly active in the college free agent market, that isn’t going to be the case, GM George McPhee told ESPN’s Craig Custance (Insider required).  The team is focusing at this point on targeting players who they believe have NHL upside in the near-term instead of signing several to fill spots at the minor league level for next season.

Custance adds that one of the players that Vegas has interest in is defenseman Neal Pionk.  The Minnesota-Duluth sophomore is expected to have quite a few teams interested in his services should he decide to turn pro.  Although he’s undersized at just 5’11, he boasts a powerful shot that could make him a strong power play threat down the road.

Other news and notes from the NCAA:

  • While he was likely to draw NHL interest, St. Cloud defenseman Jimmy Schuldt has decided to not go pro and instead return for his junior NCAA season, reports Ryan Kennedy of The Hockey News (Twitter link). This isn’t the first time the 21 year old has spurned overtures to sign with an NHL team as he was one of the more sought after blueliners on the market last season.  In 36 games with the Huskies this season, Schuldt had eight goals and 11 assists.
  • The Avalanche plan to offer a contract to defenseman Will Butcher in the coming days, reports BSNDenver’s Adrian Dater. Colorado drafted the 22 year old back in the fifth round (123rd overall) back in 2013.  If he doesn’t come to terms on a contract, he would be eligible for unrestricted free agency in mid-August.  This season with the University of Denver, Butcher has six goals and 29 assists in 39 games.
  • Flyers GM Ron Hextall landed one of the more notable college free agents last season in goaltender Alex Lyon and told CSN Philly’s Jordan Hall that he’s hopeful that they will be able to add someone in the coming weeks. However, he noted that Philadelphia’s depth of young prospects at all positions could ultimately work against them as players may opt to pursue a spot with an organization that doesn’t have as many youngsters to compete with for a spot.
