Fredrik Olofsson

West Notes: Krug, Olofsson, Eller

February 24, 2023 at 2:40 pm CDT | by Josh Erickson 1 Comment

St. Louis Blues defenseman Torey Krug is set to return to the lineup against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday, head coach Craig Berube told reporters today. It ends a brief absence stemming from a lower-body injury.

It’s been a bumpy road for Krug in 2022-23, who’s missed significant portions of the season. This is the fifth separate occasion he’s missed time with a lower-body injury, including a 13-game-long absence through December and January. Krug’s ice time has dipped below 20 minutes this season, and his -28 rating is tied for the worst on the team. He’ll return to his usual spot alongside Justin Faulk.

  • After being sent down yesterday, the Dallas Stars have brought forward Fredrik Olofsson back up from the minors. The 26-year-old has been a frequent call-up as of late, and he’s recorded a goal and three assists in 15 games with Dallas on top of 14 points in 37 games with AHL Texas. Olofsson will draw back into the lineup tomorrow against the Vegas Golden Knights as Luke Glendening and Joel Kiviranta remain sidelined with injuries.
  • The Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun covered the Washington Capitals’ trade deadline plans in his latest piece and listed pending unrestricted free agent center Lars Eller as a potential fit for the Colorado Avalanche. Eller’s offense has taken a step back this season, recording just seven goals and 16 points in 58 games, but he’d be good depth insurance for an Avalanche team that’s thin at center. As Colorado begins to string wins together ahead of the trade deadline, they hope some depth additions combined with healthy stars propel them back into the “contending” category of teams.

Snapshots: Marleau, Roy, Olofsson, Murray

February 23, 2023 at 6:54 pm CDT | by Ken MacMillan Leave a Comment

Patrick Marleau spent the majority of his playing career with the San Jose Sharks, and it sounds like he would be open to returning to the organisation in retirement. The legendary Sharks forward is the all-time leader in goals, points and games played for the club. He spent 21 seasons playing for the Sharks, helping them to a Stanley Cup Final in 2016.

Marleau retired following the 2020-21 season and will have his number retired by the team on Saturday night. The city of San Jose was honoring him ahead of his number being retired on Saturday night, and announced Feb. 25 will be Patrick Marleau Day in San Jose. When addressing the crowd, Marleau was asked if he would return to the organisation and said it was something he would definitely be interested in doing. He then joked he would have to find something he is good at first.

  • Nicolas Roy is out of the Vegas Golden Knights lineup with an injury. The center has been listed as day-to-day with a lower-body injury as per an update on the team’s Twitter page. The 26-year-old center has 11 goals and 25 points in 54 games this season. The Golden Knights are already a little depleted up front with Mark Stone and Nolan Patrick out long term. It doesn’t sound like Roy’s injury will keep him out for an extended period, but it further weakens the roster as they get set to host the Calgary Flames tonight.
  • The Dallas Stars have sent down a couple of depth players. Fredrik Olofsson and Matt Murray have been loaned to the Texas Stars. Both players were called up on an emergency basis yesterday to face the Chicago Blackhawks. Olofsson had three shots on goal and Murray served as Jake Oettinger’s backup in a 4-3 loss.

Dallas Stars Recall Fredrik Karlstrom, Fredrik Olofsson

February 20, 2023 at 9:50 am CDT | by Ethan Hetu 2 Comments

Feb 20: Round and round we go. Karlstrom and Olofsson have been recalled once again.

Feb 19: The Dallas Stars have announced that forwards Fredrik Karlstrom and Fredrik Olofsson have been reassigned to the team’s AHL affiliate, the Texas Stars.

Karlstrom was originally recalled on February 16th, and played in two games for the Stars, while Olofsson was recalled yesterday to play in that day’s game against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

The pair flanked Stars fourth-line center Radek Faksa at the bottom of head coach Peter DeBoer’s lineup last night, and they each played limited minutes in their time on the Stars’ roster. After the Stars lost 4-1 to one of the NHL’s worst teams, it seems the Stars are shuffling their roster in order to get a different look in their bottom six.

Karlstrom, 25, heads back to AHL Texas where he’s had a solid sophomore season. After scoring 16 goals and 29 points last year, the 2016 third-round pick has picked up right where he left off, and has scored eight goals and 21 points in 40 games this year.

Karlstrom turned pro in 2021-22 after a successful final SHL season with the Vaxjo Lakers, where he scored 25 points in 51 games and helped his team capture the SHL championship. He’ll now head back to Texas to possibly step back into a top-six role, a role he’s occupied at times this season.

As for Olofsson, this reassignment ends a short one-day stay on the Stars’ roster. Olofsson already has 14 games played for Dallas this season and is averaging just under ten minutes of ice time per game in that sample size.

The former University of Nebraska-Omaha star is in his first season as a pro in North America, fresh off of an impressive two-year run with IK Oskarshamn of the SHL.

While he’s unlikely to be thrilled to have spent such a short time in the NHL, the 26-year-old has firmly established himself as a preferred call-up option for the Stars, and will likely find his way back onto their roster once again before the season concludes.

Stars Recall Fredrik Olofsson

February 18, 2023 at 2:44 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

The Stars have added some extra forward depth in advance of their game tonight against Columbus, announcing the recall of winger Fredrik Olofsson from AHL Texas.  Dallas had an open roster spot so no corresponding move needed to be made.

The 26-year-old is in his first season in North America after signing with the Stars as a free agent last May, inking a one-year, one-way contract worth the NHL minimum of $750K.  Olofsson was initially drafted by Chicago back in 2014 but didn’t sign with the team, allowing him to become a free agent.  He will once again hit the open market in July.

Olofsson has been up for two separate stints with Dallas this season, getting into 13 games.  He has held his own in a limited role, picking up a goal and three assists while averaging a little under ten minutes per night on the fourth line.  Olofsson has been a bit more productive in the minors, tallying five goals along with nine helpers in 37 contests.  Knowing he’ll be testing free agency again in a few months, he’ll need to make an impact if he wants a shot at landing another one-way agreement.

Dallas Stars Reassign Fredrik Olofsson

January 24, 2023 at 11:43 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

After a relatively successful stint with the NHL club, Fredrik Olofsson is headed back to the minor leagues. The Dallas Stars have loaned him back to Texas as they try to accrue some cap space for the trade deadline.

Olofsson, 26, recorded four points in 13 games for the Stars while averaging fewer than ten minutes per night. With Roope Hintz healthy and back in the lineup, Olofsson was left in the press box last night against the Buffalo Sabres.

If that’s his fate, the team might as well take advantage of his waiver-exempt status to send him to the minor leagues. Olofsson can continue to stay fresh with game action, and the Stars can save a little bit more for a mid-season addition.

The club isn’t playing on the road until February 17, meaning they can afford to have a short roster for the time being.

Stars Recall Fredrik Olofsson From AHL

January 2, 2023 at 9:40 am CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

Jan 2: After being sent back down to the AHL yesterday, Olofsson is back already for the Stars. The SHL star has one goal in three games at the NHL level so far.

Dec 27:  Fredrik Olofsson is an older rookie at the age of 26 but he is set to get his first NHL opportunity as the Stars announced that they’ve recalled the forward from AHL Texas.

Olofsson is in his first season in North America after signing with Dallas back in May following an impressive season with IK Oskarshamn in Sweden that saw him put up 42 points in 49 games.  He also earned a spot on Sweden’s Olympic team which helped to get him on the NHL radar.  However, he hasn’t been as productive in the minors as Olofsson has just a dozen points in 28 games with Texas.

Olofsson will likely take the place of Riley Tufte in the Stars’ lineup.  Tufte played less than five minutes in Friday’s victory over Montreal and was among the many players shuffled back to the minors on Saturday for salary cap purposes.  Olofsson is a bit more of a defensive player and might be a better fit on the fourth line in Denis Gurianov’s absence.

Dallas Stars Sign Fredrik Olofsson

May 18, 2022 at 2:49 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Dallas Stars have convinced an interesting player to come back to North America, signing Fredrik Olofsson to a one-year, $750K contract for the 2022-23 season. Olofsson has played the last two seasons with Oskarshamn IK in the Swedish Hockey League.

Originally selected 98th overall in 2014 by the Chicago Blackhawks, Olofsson is an interesting case of a Swedish forward that spent his most important developmental years in the U.S. After playing minor hockey with the Colorado Thunderbirds, he spent parts of three seasons in the USHL and then all four years of his college eligibility at the University of Nebraska-Omaha. After he graduated, Olofsson failed to reach an agreement with the Blackhawks on an NHL contract, so his rights expired in the summer of 2019.

That’s when he returned to Sweden to play with the famed MODO program, which had been relegated to the second tier. In his first year back in Sweden he racked up 34 points in 52 games, and earned himself a chance at the SHL level. Now, after two strong years with Oskarshamn–and an appearance at the Olympics–he’s finally getting that NHL contract.

In 49 games this season, Olofsson–who is the brother of Charlotte Checkers defenseman Gustav Olofsson–scored 42 points. He’ll now get a chance to prove himself at the professional level back in North America, though there’s obviously still a long road ahead of him before he makes that kind of impact. As a waiver-exempt player, he can be sent to the minor leagues at any time, making it more difficult for him to crack the Stars roster out of camp. Still, with only two games of AHL experience under his belt, some time with the Texas Stars may not be a bad thing.
