Blues Loan Dalibor Dvorsky To Swedish League

Back in June, the Blues made center Dalibor Dvorsky their top pick, selecting him tenth overall.  However, they’ll have to wait a little while longer for him to make his debut in North America as CapFriendly reports (Twitter link) that St. Louis has loaned Dvorsky to IK Oskarshamn of the SHL for the upcoming season.

Dvorsky spent last season in AIK’s system in Sweden, playing at three different levels.  The bulk of his playing time came at the Allsvenskan level, their second-tier pro division.  The 18-year-old held his own against the pros, picking up six goals and eight assists in 38 games.

However, it was his production against his own age group that moved Dvorsky up draft boards.  He averaged more than a point per game on AIK’s Under-20 squad, then picked up seven points in four games in the Under-18 playoffs.  Internationally, Dvorsky played for Slovakia at both the World Juniors and the World Under-18s, finishing sixth in tournament scoring for the latter with 13 points in just seven contests.

Dvorsky has a two-year deal in Sweden so this loan comes as little surprise as it’s unlikely that he would have competed for a roster spot in training camp.  The loan means that he’ll be eligible to have his contract slide next season (as long as he doesn’t play in ten or more NHL contests later on in the year) which means it would still have three seasons remaining on it in 2024-25.

2023 top-ten pick Dalibor Dvorsky has another major career milestone under his belt just a few weeks after the draft: his first NHL contract. The St. Louis Blues signed their tenth-overall selection to a three-year entry-level contract today, per a team release.

The team did not disclose contract details. However, it’s important to note his signing doesn’t mean he’ll be playing in North America next season – as expected; he’ll be loaned back to SHL club IK Oskarshamn to honor the first year of a two-year deal he signed with them before the draft, reports Bally Sports Midwest’s Andy Strickland.

CapFriendly also confirms Dvorsky is eligible for an entry-level slide twice, given his signing age of 18, meaning a full-time loan to the SHL this season would kick the beginning of his ELC to 2024-25 (or later, if he plays less than ten NHL games again in 2024-25).

It’s likely Dvorsky is ready for some NHL looks after an additional year of development in Europe, though, and this upcoming year should likely be Dvorsky’s last in the Swedish professional circuit. The Slovak national spent most of his development from 2016 onwards playing in Sweden, where he registered 14 points in 38 games playing in the second-tier pros for HockeyAllsvenskan club AIK last season.

His draft stock varied a bit throughout the season, as his Allsvenskan production didn’t quite live up to the tantalizing flashes he showed when playing against his own peer group in Swedish juniors and internationally. Still, few Blues fans should complain about landing him at tenth overall, and today’s signing could very well begin a long tenure in St. Louis as a top-nine fixture.

Prospect Notes: Korchinski, Dvorsky, Reinbacher

The Chicago Blackhawks are quickly assembling one of the more tantalizing prospect pools in the league, at least in terms of upside. While much of the discussion is around their expected generational talent in Connor Bedard, don’t gloss over last year’s seventh-overall pick – defenseman Kevin Korchinski, who NBC Sports Chicago’s Charlie Roumeliotis says the organization faces a short-term decision on in regards to his playing future.

The 19-year-old defenseman had an incredible campaign with the WHL’s Seattle Thunderbirds, tallying 73 points in 54 games during the 2022-23 season en route to a WHL championship and Memorial Cup berth. But due to the NHL-CHL transfer agreement, he’s not yet eligible for assignment to the AHL’s Rockford IceHogs next year, leaving him with two options: the NHL or a return to juniors, where he has very little left to prove. Blackhawks head coach Luke Richardson doesn’t have a crystal ball into what the organization may decide, telling Roumeliotis, “we’re confident he’s going to be here. When? We don’t want to put a label on that right now.”

It seems the most likely scenario is, at the very least, a nine-game trial for Korchinski out of training camp before determining whether or not to burn the first year of his entry-level contract, which could slide to 2024-25 if he plays less than 10 NHL games this season.

  • Bally Sports Midwest’s Andy Strickland confirms that 2023 tenth overall selection Dalibor Dvorsky will return to Sweden for 2023-24, honoring the first season of a two-year commitment he signed with SHL club IK Oskarshamn earlier this summer. Dvorsky is technically eligible for AHL play this season under the NHL’s transfer agreement with Swedish leagues, given he was a first-round pick, but he (and the Blues) believe a year of experience against the top level of Swedish competition is the right choice for his development. Dvorsky did play pro hockey in Sweden last year, but it was with second-division club AIK – part of the HockeyAllsvenskan league, not the SHL.
  • Montreal Canadiens co-director of amateur scouting Nick Bobrov sat down with The Athletic’s Arpon Basu, commenting on the organizational philosophy that led them to select defenseman David Reinbacher at fifth overall – a pick contested by some who believe the team should’ve taken a swing on Matvei Michkov, who fell to seventh overall. Emphasizing Reinbacher’s solid pro play and well-rounded analytical profile, Bobrov did have an interesting comment regarding concerns about the team’s lack of scoring: “So I would push back against the notion that we have no scoring. We have very young players who always scored, and they’re getting better every month. And then, you know, how many 40-goal scorers did Vegas have this year? You start looking at the playoffs, right? The playoffs.” Scoring by committee isn’t a new philosophy for the Habs, who haven’t had a player hit the 80-point plateau since Alex Kovalev in 2008.

Dalibor Dvorsky Signs Two-Year Deal In SHL

This morning, there’s a notable bit of transaction news involving one of the top prospects available in next week’s draft. Slovak talent Dalibor Dvorsky has signed a two-year contract with SHL club IK Oskarshamn, the team announced this morning.

The move doesn’t prevent Dvorsky from signing his entry-level contract with an NHL team after getting drafted or even heading to play in the NHL before the expiration of the contract, per the league’s transfer agreement with the SHL. Instead, the move ensures Dvorsky has a home to play top-flight professional hockey from his draft year onward.

Dvorsky did play in a pro league for most of this season, although it was in the second division of Swedish hockey, HockeyAllsvenskan. The consensus top-20 pick recorded six goals and 14 points in 38 games with the Solna-based club AIK, although he was held off the scoresheet in seven SHL qualification games. It’s a tough blow for AIK, who won’t have the 18-year-old back in the fold next season as they again try to gain promotion to the SHL.

He joins an Oskarshamn club that’s steadily improved since gaining promotion from the Allsvenskan in 2019, coming off back-to-back playoff appearances in 2021 and 2022. Whichever NHL team selects him next Wednesday will need to keep a careful watch on his usage there, ensuring he’s getting ample chances to develop and isn’t just sitting at the bottom of the lineup – a common occurrence for youngsters in European pro leagues. If he doesn’t succeed in his rookie SHL season, expect his future NHL team to sign him to an entry-level contract next summer and bring him to North America. He would be eligible for AHL designation, given he was a first-round selection.
