Minor Transactions: 01/19/23

January 19, 2023 at 7:58 pm CDT | by Ethan Hetu Leave a Comment

It’s a busy night on the NHL schedule, with 13 games set to be played. Highlights include the league-leading Boston Bruins taking on Eastern Conference rivals, the New York Rangers, the Edmonton Oilers facing the Tampa Bay Lightning, and the Toronto Maple Leafs battling the Winnipeg Jets. As fans across the world enjoy all this NHL action, teams in minor and overseas leagues are making tweaks to their rosters. We’ll keep track of those moves here.

  • Former Vancouver Canucks and Florida Panthers forward Juho Lammikko has signed a two-year extension to remain with his current club, Switzerland’s ZSC Lions. Lammikko will remain in Zurich after signing there from Vancouver in the summer. He’s been a quality contributor at Switzerland’s highest level, leading the Lions in goals with 15 in 24 games.
  • The Montreal Canadiens organization has swapped the levels of two of its minor league netminders. Big Joe Vrbetic, a seventh-round pick at the 2021 draft, is headed to the ECHL, while Philippe Desrosiers is headed to the team’s AHL affiliate, the Laval Rocket. Vrbetic has struggled thusfar in his professional debut, with a .872 save percentage in 11 games.
  • On January 11th, we covered how former ECHL star Darik Angeli had left his club, the EIHL’s Belfast Giants. We now know where Angeli is headed. He’s signed a contract with Vienna Capitals, a team in the ICEHL, a league comprising of teams in Austria, Italy, Hungary, and Slovenia. He heads to the Austrian capital after a moderately successful stint with Belfast, where he scored 12 points in 24 games.
  • The Toledo Blade’s Mark Monroe has reported that ECHL defenseman Cole Fraser has left his current club, the Toledo Walleye, to sign with the EIHL’s Dundee Stars. The 23-year-old blueliner was a fifth-round pick of the Detroit Red Wings in 2017, and has played in the ECHL for the bulk of his professional career.
  • The ECHL’s South Carolina Stingrays acquired forward Jackson Leppard from the Allen Americans in exchange for forward Gavin Gould. It’s a change of scenery deal for each player, as Leppard has struggled after an impressive 20-goal, 35-point professional debut, while Gould, who has just eight points this season, heads back to Allen after scoring above a point-per-game there last season.

Minor Transactions: 01/11/23

January 11, 2023 at 4:00 pm CDT | by Ethan Hetu Leave a Comment

It’s a relatively light day on the NHL calendar, with just four games on the docket. Two sets of Pacific Division rivals will do battle tonight, with the Anaheim Ducks taking on the Edmonton Oilers, while the San Jose Sharks will attempt to best their arch-rivals, the Los Angeles Kings. As the NHL season rumbles along, many minor league, overseas league, and junior league teams are making tweaks to their rosters. We’ll keep track of those moves here.

  • Kevin Roy, who spent last season with the Laval Rocket of the AHL, is leaving Brynas IF. The Swedish club announced yesterday that their short-term agreement with Roy expired and that he would not be offered an extension. Roy, 29, has 28 NHL games on his resume (from 2017-18 and 2018-19) and scored one goal in his six-game run with Brynas in the SHL.
  • Former NHL defenseman Korbinian Holzer is remaining in the DEL. The German blueliner, 34, has extended his contract with DEL side Adler Mannheim for another season. Holzer, a veteran of over 200 NHL games, last played in the NHL in 2019-20. Since then, he’s played one season in the KHL, two with Mannheim, and represented Germany at the 2022 Beijing Olympics and two straight IIHF World Championships.
  • Philadelphia Flyers prospect Zayde Wisdom was re-assigned to the Flyers’ ECHL affiliate, the Reading Royals, today. Wisdom, 20, was a fourth-round pick of the team at the 2020 draft and impressed as a rookie in the AHL, scoring 18 points in 28 games at an age where playing in the AHL can be very challenging. Wisdom returned to the OHL last season and scored 38 points in 43 games. This season, his second as a professional, hasn’t gone to plan, as Wisdom has just seven points in 28 games playing in a bottom-six role.
  • Former Olympian Janis Kalinins, who represented his native Latvia at the 2022 Beijing Olympics, has signed an extension to remain in the KHL. KHL side Amur Khabarovsk has announced contract extensions for both Kalinins and defenseman Cameron Lee, a former Penguins AHLer. Kalinins, 31, has a .923 save percentage in 19 games this season, while Lee scored 14 points in 35 games as a top-of-the-lineup blueliner for the team.
  • Slovakian pro side HK Poprad have signed two players to their squad, Slovakian center Petr Kolouch, and American forward Nick Jermain. Kolouch, 31, is a veteran of the European professional circuit, having spent more than a decade playing in Czechia. So far this season, he’s played in Austria with EC Graz. Jermain, 26, was a four-year player at Quinnipiac University and made his professional debut last season in the ECHL. He has nine points in 24 ECHL games this season.
  • Miles Gendron, a 2014 third-round pick of the Ottawa Senators, left his club yesterday. Storhamar, a team in the Norwegian Fjordkraft-Ligaen, announced that they had parted ways with Gendron yesterday. Gendron had played in 19 games in Norway after signing with Storhamar in the offseason and has scored eight points. A return to North America could be in the cards for Gendron, as he’s spent the past few years manning the bluelines of the ECHL.
  • The EIHL’s Glasgow Clan announced a pair of signings yesterday, bringing in former Arizona Coyotes prospect Niklas Tikkinen, as well as ECHL defenseman Jeff Solow. For Tikkinen, the signing moves him from Denmark, where he’s spent the last two seasons, to Scotland. For Solow, the deal will represent his first chance to test his mettle on a professional basis outside of North America.
  • 2007 Columbus Blue Jackets second-round pick Will Weber has signed a two-year extension to remain with his current club, the DEL’s Schwenninger Wild Wings. Weber, 34, is in his fifth season playing in Germany, having spent the last three with the Wild Wings. The big six-foot-three blueliner has registered one assist and 69 penalty minutes in 30 games this season.
  • Another member of the 2007 draft class, Dallas Stars fifth-rounder Ondrej Roman, has ended his contract with France’s Rouen Dragons via a mutual agreement. Roman, a 33-year-old Czech winger, signed in France in the summer having spent the past two seasons in the Czech league. He found success in France, scoring 25 points in 27 games, and will now look to another destination to continue his professional career.
  • Johan Ivarsson, a veteran of both the SHL and Liiga, has signed a two-year extension with his current club, Sodertalje SK. The 27-year-old is playing in Sweden’s second division, HockeyAllsvenskan, for the first time in a half-decade, attempting to get Sodertalje promoted. Ivarsson signed with his current club after a two-year stint with TPS Turku in Finland, and has scored 10 points in 31 games.
  • Veteran minor league netminder Alex Sakellaropoulos has signed with the ECHL’s Atlanta Gladiators, per a league announcement.  The 28-year-old has played for seven ECHL clubs in the past five years, bouncing around somewhat in order to fill in for teams in need of help in the crease. Last season, Sakellaropoulos got some consistency, playing in 30 games for the Adirondack Thunder. He wasn’t great, posting an .881 save percentage, but he’s solidified himself as an option in the ECHL, one the Gladiators will now turn to.
  • Former ECHL star Darik Angeli has departed his club, the EIHL’s Belfast Giants. The 32-year-old scored 70 points in 63 ECHL games last season and signed with Belfast over the summer. The former Ohio State Buckeye will now leave Northern Ireland having scored twelve points in 24 games there.
  • Longtime ECHL scorer Kyle Blaney has signed a contract with the Jacksonville Icemen. The 31-year-old spent last season with the Kalamazoo Wings, scoring 43 points in 65 games. He should be able to help Jacksonville’s offensive attack, a unit that currently ranks in the middle of the pack in terms of goals scored.
  • Defenseman Dilan Peters was released by his club, the ECHL’s Newfoundland Growlers, today. The six-foot-six blueliner was traded to Newfoundland on December 6th, heading there from the Wheeling Nailers, the team he signed with in the summer. Peters, who has made his professional debut this season, has yet to register on an ECHL scoresheet, and he had gotten into nine total games across both teams before yesterday’s release.
  • Swiss blueliner Samuel Kreis, a seasoned veteran who has spent over a decade playing in his home country’s top professional league, has signed a three-year deal with SC Bern, set to begin next fall. The 28-year-old signed with EV Zug in 2021 and helped the team win the 2021-22 NL Championship. Kreis last played for Bern in 2016-17 and won three league championships and a Swiss Cup in his time there.

Minor Transactions: 01/08/23

January 8, 2023 at 4:00 pm CDT | by Ethan Hetu Leave a Comment

It’s another busy day on the NHL calendar, with half of the league set to do battle. Tonight’s highlights include a matchup of two bitter Central Division rivals when the St. Louis Blues take on the Minnesota Wild, and a Western Canadian showdown as the Vancouver Canucks test their mettle against the Winnipeg Jets. As hockey fans across the world enjoy these contests, teams from minor leagues, overseas leagues, and junior leagues are making tweaks to their rosters. We’ll keep track of those moves here.

  • After spending two seasons in North America and playing in over 100 NHL games, former Detroit Red Wings forward Christoffer Ehn made the choice to head back to Europe to continue his career. The 26-year-old has spent the past two seasons playing for Linkoping in the SHL, and has been solid. Today, Linkoping announced that Ehn has signed a three-year extension to remain with the team. Linkoping currently stands ninth in the SHL standings, and with this extension in hand Ehn will now be able to be a core player helping the team climb the Swedish hockey ranks.
  • Vladimir Roth, a veteran of the European pro hockey circuit, has returned to his old stomping grounds at HC Ocelari Trinec. The 32-year-old blueliner last played with the Czech side in 2019-20, and has in total played parts of eight seasons there. So far this season Roth has played mostly in Prague at the second-division level, and he’ll now get another chance in Czechia’s top division with this move.
  • The departures from Lillehammer, a team in the top Norwegian professional league, continue. Yesterday, Lillehammer lost a top scorer, Martin Gran, and today they lose another key forward, Henrik Eriksson. Eriksson, 26, has scored 30 points in 29 games for Lillehammer, and will now join the Belfast Giants of the EIHL, the top professional hockey league in the United Kingdom.

Minor Transactions: 07/19/22

July 19, 2022 at 2:06 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

It hasn’t even been a week since free agency opened but things have already slowed to a crawl. After hundreds of NHL contracts were handed out, minor league deals are starting to come fast and furious. We’ll keep track of the notable minor transactions right here.

  • The Manitoba Moose have agreed to terms with three players to AHL deals, bringing back Evan Cormier, Thomas Caron, and Isaac Johnson. Cormier, a fourth-round pick of the New Jersey Devils in 2016, had a .905 save percentage in 14 games for the Moose this season.
  • In addition to first-round pick Emile Poirier, the Laval Rocket have also signed Alex Green and Kevin Poulin to AHL contracts for the upcoming season. Poulin, 32, was excellent for Laval this season, registering a .920 save percentage in 30 appearances.
  • Scott Wilson, Stanley Cup champion and veteran of more than 200 NHL games, has signed another AHL contract with the Charlotte Checkers. The 30-year-old winger was a force for the team this season, scoring 24 goals and 40 points in 71 games while being his normal hard-working two-way self.
  • The ECHL’s Allen Americans have added an interesting player fresh out of college hockey. Hank Crone, 24, signed a one-year contract with the Americans after a strong final collegiate season with Northern Michigan University. In 32 games Crone had 44 points and showcased his all-around game as one of the team’s most heavily relied-upon forwards. Crone will make his pro debut in Allen and hope to translate his collegiate success to professional hockey.
  • Veteran professional winger Andrew Johnston was among the British EIHL’s top scorers in 2019-20, and now he’s returning to that league after two successful seasons in France. Johnston has signed a contract for 2022-23 with the EIHL’s Nottingham Panthers, per a team announcement. The former ECHL journeyman had 31 points in 39 games for the Rouen Dragons of the French Ligue Magnus and will join a Panthers squad eager to improve on last season’s disappointing first-round playoff exit.
  • The Minnesota Wild AHL affiliate, the Iowa Wild, announced that they have signed three players to one-year, two-way (AHL/ECHL) contracts: Mitchell Balmas, Kevin Conley, and Patrick Curry. Balmas, 24, is a former junior hockey star who led the QMJHL’s Cape Breton Screaming Eagles in scoring in his final season in juniors. 2021-22 was Balmas’ professional debut and he split time between the AHL and ECHL, and had five points in ten AHL games and 12 points in 17 ECHL games. Conley, 25, is the former captain of the University of Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks and made his professional debut as well last season, with three points in six games for the ECHL’s Reading Royals. Curry, 26, hasn’t quite cut it as an AHL forward yet, with just eight points in 53 career games, but he had a lot of success as an upperclassman at Boston University and had eight points in his five-game ECHL run with the Toledo Walleye.
  • Orli Znojmo of the European ICEHL could have a tough time repeating last season’s run to the playoffs. Two days ago, the team lost their leading scorer, Anthony Luciani, and it seems they’ve lost their captain this offseason as well. Per an announcement from his new club, Radim Matus, Orli Znojmo’s captain, has signed with Eisbaren Regensburg of Germany’s second-tier DEL-2. Regensburg are looking to establish themselves in DEL-2 after being promoted from the German third tier earlier this year, and Matus should be able to help them achieve that goal.

Griffin Reinhart Signs In EIHL

August 30, 2021 at 2:07 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 7 Comments

The Belfast Giants have landed quite a free agent, signing Griffin Reinhart for the upcoming season. The team has also signed J.J. Piccinich, making it quite the day for the EIHL team.

Reinhart, 27, was the fourth overall pick in 2012, selected by the New York Islanders just ahead of Morgan Rielly. While his professional career certainly didn’t go as planned, he still played 37 games at the NHL level and more than 300 in the AHL. The last two years have seen him lace up his skates in China with Kunlun Red Star of the KHL and then the Iserlohn Roosters of the DEL.

It’s quite the get for Belfast, who are actually the reigning league champions, though that came back in 2019. The last two seasons haven’t been played in full, with a four-team “Elite Series” taking place earlier this year instead.

Piccinich, 25, is also an NHL draft pick, selected in the fourth round by the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2014. He spent last season with the Orlando Solar Bears of the ECHL, scoring 29 points in 65 games.

Liam Kirk Signs Entry-Level Contract

June 18, 2021 at 9:56 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Arizona Coyotes have signed Liam Kirk to a three-year entry-level contract, according to his agent Dan Milstein of Gold Star Hockey. It appeared recently as though Kirk was ticketed for a sign-and-trade situation, but Craig Morgan of AZ Coyotes Insider has confirmed that there is no trade in place. PuckPedia tweets that the deal will carry an average annual value of $813K, but cannot actually become official until July 28 when the transfer window opens again.

Instead, it appears as though Kirk will get his chance with the Coyotes organization after his outstanding World Championship performance. The first born-and-trained player from England ever to be selected in the NHL entry draft, Kirk was picked 189th overall by Arizona in 2018. He played two seasons with the Peterborough Petes of the OHL, recording 97 points in 110 games, before going back overseas last year.

Developed by the Sheffield Steelers organization, a member of the EIHL, he returned there this season and showed just how much he had grown in the last few years. In 2017-18, Kirk put up 16 points in 52 games while playing against men sometimes more than ten years older than him. In 2020-21, he scored ten goals and 20 points in 14 games for the Steelers, dominating the competition on a regular basis.

When he suited up for Great Britain at the recent World Championship, Kirk was able to really open some eyes in the NHL. Playing against high-level competition, he managed to score seven goals, tied for the tournament lead, in just seven games. That performance led directly to this entry-level deal, which now allows the 21-year-old to test himself at the professional level in North America.

NHL Announces New Player Transfer Agreements

April 28, 2020 at 11:48 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 4 Comments

The NHL has announced new player transfer agreements today, including one-year extensions with the existing ones. Those include the IIHF Member Federations/Leagues in Austria, Belarus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Latvia, Norway, Slovakia, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.

They have also extended the existing CHL Agreement with the Canadian Hockey League (OHL, WHL, QMJHL). This means that nothing will change in regards to players drafted out of the CHL being eligible for AHL play before the age of 20. Corey Pronman of The Athletic (subscription required) recently polled scouts on whether the believed the agreement should be amended; 60% felt it should be, however, any changes will have to wait at least another year.

The biggest news however is the new one-year agreement with the Swiss Ice Hockey Association and Swiss League, something that previously did not exist. This will provide extra opportunities for players in Switzerland to come over to North America, and will slightly tweak the rules for draft picks out of the league.

With these agreements announced, we will likely see a flood of contracts for European players officially filed over the next few days.

Prospect Notes: Draft Rankings, Foote, Brodeur

February 19, 2020 at 4:01 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Athletic’s Scott Wheeler has released his midseason draft prospect ranking (subscription required), where he takes a detailed look at the top 31 prospects while also ranking the second round. It won’t surprise you that Alexis Lafreniere is at the top, though the rest of his first round comes with some surprises.

One of those may be Jake Sanderson, who is the lone American-born player in the top-31. Sanderson sits at No. 25, making it quite a weak draft for the United States (especially compared to last year’s loaded class). The piece has enough information for you to spend an afternoon picking apart, especially as draft picks are swapped over the next several days.

  • The Kelowna Rockets of the WHL have made a change behind the bench, releasing former NHL defenseman Adam Foote from his duties as head coach. This is almost unheard of for a team to do just before they host the Memorial Cup, but with Kelowna sitting with a losing record obviously they felt a change should be made. Foote’s son, Nolan Foote, just had a big change in his career path as well after being traded from the Tampa Bay Lightning to the New Jersey Devils. He’ll have to chase that Memorial Cup without his dad looking over his shoulder.
  • Another famous hockey name is in the news today, as Jeremy Brodeur has signed with the Sheffield Steelers of the EIHL. Son of legendary NHL goaltender Martin Brodeur, the 23-year old netminder went undrafted and played last season in the ECHL.

Henrik Samuelsson Signs In EIHL

November 12, 2019 at 5:07 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

Hockey is growing around the world, and perhaps no faster than in the United Kingdom where the EIHL is drawing more fans and better talent daily. Today, the Manchester Storm have added a player that plenty of NHL fans will be familiar with, if only because of the surname. Henrik Samuelsson, 2012 first-round pick and son of long-time NHL defenseman Ulf Samuelsson, has signed with the Storm and will soon make his EIHL debut.

Now 25, the 6’3″ forward was selected 27th overall by the Phoenix Coyotes back in 2012 after making quite an impression in a half season for the Edmonton Oil Kings. He would go on to find great success at the junior level before turning pro and continuing his dominance in the minor leagues. In 2014-15 he recorded 18 goals and 40 points as an AHL rookie and even earned himself three games in the NHL with the Coyotes.

Unfortunately that season was the very peak of his career so far and Samuelsson has bounced around the minors ever since. Suiting up for the Springfield Falcons, Tucson Roadrunners, Bakersfield Condors, Rockford IceHogs, Idaho Steelheads and most recently the Worcester Railers, he was never able to get his NHL future back on track.

The Storm are in last place in the 10-team league, and could use Samuelsson’s help in the offensive end.

Philadelphia Flyers Sign Chris Stewart

October 15, 2019 at 9:43 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 3 Comments

After spending last season playing in the EIHL, Chris Stewart has made it back to the best league in the world. The Philadelphia Flyers have signed Stewart to a one-year, one-way contract and are expected to have him in the lineup tonight when they take on the Calgary Flames. Stewart’s deal carries an average annual value of $750K though the actual year-long cap hit will be slightly higher given he signed it in-season.

Stewart, 31, played most of last season for the Nottingham Panthers of the Elite Ice Hockey League in the United Kingdom, scoring 13 points in 23 games. It may be hard to remember after his last few NHL seasons that were spent bouncing around the league, but Stewart was once one of the most feared power forwards in the game. Scoring 28 goals in consecutive seasons during the early part of his career, he was an absolute force in front of the net and could protect the puck extremely well with his huge frame. His touch around the net has never really left—Stewart still carries a career 82-game average of more than 20 goals—but it’s hard to expect much of anything else at this point in his career.

For the Flyers, squeezing some bottom-six time and perhaps a few goals out of Stewart is all they will need for such a small investment. Bringing him in on a professional tryout and now signing him to a near-minimum deal means that anything he contributes is a bonus.

The team is currently 2-0-1 on the year and has young players brimming with potential waiting for their chance, but will use a veteran like Stewart to first give them some more depth in the NHL and keep those youngsters ripe in the minor leagues.
