Snapshots: Zucker, Erne, Miromanov

What looked to be a short-term absence due to illness for Sabres winger Jason Zucker has now become a longer one.  Matthew Fairburn of The Athletic notes (Twitter link) that the veteran hasn’t been able to eat solid food in nine days while battling the illness and has lost considerable weight as a result.  Accordingly, he’s going to need a bit of a build-up from a conditioning standpoint once he’s able to eat again before he can be cleared to return.  Zucker had been off to a solid start to his season before being sidelined, picking up four goals and three assists in a dozen games, providing the type of secondary scoring that Buffalo has been lacking for a while now.

Elsewhere around the NHL:

  • Stars winger Adam Erne will miss at least a couple of weeks due to a lower-body injury, relays Robert Tiffin of D Magazine (Twitter link). He will leave the team’s road trip to return home for treatment.  One of the few players to earn a full-season contract off a training camp PTO, the 30-year-old has largely been a regular for Dallas, playing in 14 of 17 games so far.  In those outings, Erne has two goals and an assist along with 44 hits in 9:37 per night of playing time.
  • Daniil Miromanov’s second NHL stint of the season was short-lived. After recalling him on Sunday, the Flames announced (Twitter link) that they have returned him to AHL Calgary.  The 28-year-old didn’t see any action while on recall and has just one NHL appearance on the season.  Miromanov cleared waivers last month and has spent most of the season in the minors with the Wranglers where he has four points in seven games.  Calgary now has one open roster spot with a second coming tomorrow once Justin Kirkland’s waiver period expires.

Flames Recall Daniil Miromanov, Place Zayne Parekh On IR

6:00 p.m.: Huska provided some more clarity regarding Parekh’s timeline today, according to Flames Nation’s Ryan Pike. Huska told the media that Parekh’s injury is considered “week-to-week.” Pike also noted that while Parekh is on injured reserve, games played by the Flames will still “count” for Parekh regarding the 40-game threshold that would see him accrue a year of service time towards unrestricted free agency.

While there’s still a long way to go before the Flames have to begin seriously thinking about any looming UFA status for Parekh, who is just 19 years old, Parekh’s UFA timeline could come into play in future extension talks. It is generally viewed as more expensive for a team to sign a contract covering a year where a player would be eligible for unrestricted free agency compared to restricted free agency. As a result, even though any unrestricted free agency for the player seems to be far away at this point, it is still an aspect of this injury news that is notable.

11:57 a.m.: After losing defenseman Zayne Parekh to an upper-body injury last night against Chicago, the Flames are bringing up a replacement for him.  The team announced (Twitter link) that they’ve recalled blueliner Daniil Miromanov from AHL Calgary.  To make room on the roster, Parekh was placed on injured reserve.

Miromanov broke camp with the Flames but playing time was rather difficult to come by as he was in the number eight role.  As a result, he was placed on waivers a little under three weeks ago and after clearing, he was sent to the Wranglers.  In seven games with them so far, the 28-year-old has done relatively well, picking up a goal and three assists.

Miromanov has 94 career NHL games under his belt, one coming this season.  He got into a career-best 44 games with the Flames in 2024-25 where he had nine points and 55 blocked shots while averaging 17:41 per night.  In the final season of a two-year, $2.5MM deal, he’s slated to become an unrestricted free agent this summer and might be staring down a possible salary reduction.

As for Parekh, head coach Ryan Huska told reporters postgame including Postmedia’s Daniel Austin that the rookie was set to miss some time, even though they don’t yet know the full extent of the injury.  With this placement, he’ll be out for at least one week.  Parekh recently officially began the first season of his entry-level contract once he eclipsed the nine-game mark and has one assist in 11 outings in 2025-26 while playing a little under 15 minutes a night.

Flames To Reassign Daniil Miromanov

Oct. 21: Miromanov has cleared waivers and will be on his way to the AHL, according to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet.

Oct. 20: The Calgary Flames have placed defenseman Daniil Miromanov on waivers per Pat Steinberg of Sportsnet 960. The move opens a roster spot that could soon be used to activate forward Martin Pospisil from injured reserve. Pospisil has missed the start of the season with an undisclosed injury sustained during the preseason.

This is Miromanov’s first time being placed on the waiver wire. He has stayed on the Flames’ roster since joining the club in the 2024 trade that sent Noah Hanifin to the Vegas Golden Knights. He scored seven points in the final 20 games of Calgary’s 2023-24 season. But he fell hard into the extra defender role last year, playing in only 44 games and otherwise serving as a routine healthy scratch. The minimal minutes were marked by minimal production – just nine points, 12 penalty minutes, and a plus-two.

Miromanov’s role has fallen even further this season. He played in just one of Calgary’s six games to start the season, and didn’t receive any notable stat changes or ice time on special teams. Now, he could be headed to the minor leagues for the first time since 2023. He previously played 89 games and scored a productive 68 points through three seasons with the Henderson Silver Knights. The Calgary Wranglers would certainly welcome that production, should Miromanov clear waivers.

But going unclaimed could be tough for a 6-foot-4, right-shot defenseman. That frame, and a history of strong minor-league scoring, could be enough to tempt a team with roster flexibility to take their chance on reworking his game. Miromanov has tallied 23 points, 38 hits, and 110 blocked shots through 94 games in the NHL.

The Flames haven’t done much this summer on the back end.  Joel Hanley was re-signed after he became an unrestricted free agent, Kevin Bahl received a long-term deal, and Rasmus Andersson has not been moved despite plenty of trade speculation.  The expectation is that 2024 first-rounder Zayne Parekh will be on the roster as well; he remains ineligible to be sent to the AHL.  As a result, Postmedia’s Daniel Austin suggests that Daniil Miromanov could be the odd man out on the back end barring any further movement.  The 28-year-old played in a career-high 44 games last season, notching nine points and 55 blocked shots while averaging 17:41 per contest.  A right-shot defender signed for one more year at $1.25MM, there’s a good chance Calgary would be able to generate some trade interest in him in training camp if he does wind up being on the outside looking in at a roster spot.

  • Still with the Flames, prospect Mace’o Phillips has decided where he will be playing this season. Green Bay of the USHL announced on its Instagram page that the blueliner has committed to playing for them in 2025-26.  Phillips was a third-round pick last month by Calgary, going 80th overall after spending last season with the U.S. National Team Development Program.  It should be one-and-done with the Gamblers as Phillips is expected to suit up for the University of Minnesota in 2026-27.  By delaying going to college, the Flames could have up to five years to sign him to his entry-level contract.
  • While now-former Golden Knights prospect Artur Cholach didn’t sign by the June 1st deadline leading to his rights being relinquished, he will remain with the organization as their AHL affiliate in Henderson recently announced that the blueliner had signed a one-year contract for the upcoming season. The 22-year-old was a sixth-round pick back in 2021 and played his first professional campaign last season, getting into five games with Henderson and 54 with ECHL Tahoe where he had seven goals and 16 assists.

Flames Sign Daniil Miromanov To Two-Year Extension

The Calgary Flames have signed their newest member, Daniil Miromanov, to a two-year, $2.5MM contract extension, per Miromanov’s agent Dan Milstein. The Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun shares that the new deal will carry an annual cap hit of $1.25MM. Calgary acquired Miromanov alongside a first-round pick and a conditional third-round pick in the Wednesday evening trade that sent Noah Hanifin to the Vegas Golden Knights. He was set to become a restricted free agent this summer, finishing off a two-year, $1.525MM deal signed with Vegas in June of 2022.

Miromanov joined the Golden Knights organization in March of 2021, signing as an undrafted free agent at the end of the KHL season. He recorded two assists across 11 AHL games to close out the year, including the playoffs. The 2021-22 season would more formally kick off Miromanov’s career, and the excitement around him, after the defenseman managed 11 goals and 40 points in 53 AHL games and recorded his first 11 NHL games in spot starts throughout the season. He’s since continued to split time between the AHL and NHL, proving plenty productive in the minor leagues but struggling to carry that scoring to Vegas. Miromanov has 72 points in 84 career AHL games, but just seven points in 29 career NHL games.

An undisclosed injury earned Miromanov a place on Vegas’ season-opening injured reserve. He was activated to play on February 4th and has since played in five AHL games and four NHL games.

The Calgary Flames are clearly excited about Miromanov’s long-term outlook, signing the 26-year-old to a seven-figure extension before he played 30 games in the league. The Flames’ defense has been completely dismantled this season, with the team trading Hanifin, Nikita Zadorov, and Chris Tanev and losing Nick DeSimone on waivers. This has created plenty of opportunity for new defenders to carve out a big role, with Miromanov likely set to compete with former Golden Knights teammate Brayden Pachal for the right-hand spot on Calgary’s third pairing. Calgary currently carries eight defensemen, including recent waiver claim Joel Hanley and healthy scratch Dennis Gilbert.

Golden Knights Acquire Noah Hanifin From Flames

9:23 p.m.: The Vegas Golden Knights have announced the full trade package – sending a 2025 first-round pick, a conditional 2025 third-round pick, and defenseman Daniil Miromanov to the Flames. The first-round pick carries top-10 protection, while the third-round pick will upgrade to a 2024 second-round pick if Vegas advances to the second round of the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Vegas also sent a 2024 fifth-round pick to the Philadelphia Flyers to broker the deal. Calgary retained 25 percent of Hanifin’s $4.95MM cap hit, while Philadelphia retained 50 percent, meaning he’ll only count towards $1.2375MM of Vegas’ salary cap. Philadelphia sent the rights to 27-year-old centerman Mikhail Vorobyov to Vegas to facilitate the salary retention.

Vorobyov played in 35 NHL games across the 2018-19 and 2019-20 season, scoring two goals and five points. He’s spent each of the last four seasons in Russia’s KHL, including the last three with routine heavyweight SKA St. Petersburg. Vorobyov has 112 points across 194 KHL games since the 2020-21 season.

5:28 p.m.: Even after acquiring Anthony Mantha from the Washington Capitals yesterday, the Vegas Golden Knights were not done adding to their current roster. Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman confirmed that the Golden Knights would be acquiring defenseman Noah Hanifin from the Calgary Flames. TSN’s Darren Dreger reports that defenseman Daniil Miromanov is heading from Vegas to Calgary as part of the return.

Not only will Vegas be adding a top defenseman to their already loaded defensive core, but Darren Dreger of TSN reports the two sides are working on a contract extension as well, although Friedman did pour some cold water on that scenario later. Since Hanifin will be a member of the Golden Knights before the trade deadline, he is eligible to sign an eight-year deal in Vegas.

With Alec Martinez being placed on the team’s injured reserve earlier this morning, Vegas had an opening next to top defenseman Alex Pietrangelo. Factoring in the recent activation of Shea Theodore, the Golden Knights have once again put together a top defensive core leading into the Stanley Cup playoffs.

As the defending Stanley Cup champions, Vegas will likely represent Hanifin’s best opportunity to win Lord Stanley’s trophy for the first time in his career. There are some personal ties as well for Hanifin in Nevada, as he did play with star center Jack Eichel a decade ago on the United States National Junior Development Team.

Suppose the Flames are willing to retain 50% of Hanifin’s salary. In that case, a deal became feasible, as Vegas was only $500k from being able to absorb Hanifin’s full salary for the rest of the season. Still holding on to their first-round pick of the 2024 NHL Draft, and a moderate prospect pool to deal from, the makings of a deal came to fruition rather quickly between the two teams.

Injury Updates: Miromanov, Senators, Killorn, Bedard, Raanta

The Golden Knights welcomed back one of their blueliners for their game tonight versus Arizona as the team announced (Twitter link) that they’ve activated Daniil Miromanov from injured reserve.  The 26-year-old had yet to play with Vegas this season as he worked his way back from ACL and meniscus surgery in the summer.  He got into five games with AHL Henderson last month on a conditioning stint and fared quite well, notching a goal and five assists before being recalled a couple of weeks ago.  However, Vegas opted to play it safe with Miromanov, allowing him more time to skate with the team before officially having him suit up for his season debut with the big club.

Other injury news from around the NHL:

  • The Senators are expected to welcome back goaltender Anton Forsberg and defenseman Travis Hamonic for their next game on Saturday, relays Sportsnet’s Wayne Scanlan (Twitter link). Forsberg is currently on LTIR and Ottawa will need to make some roster moves to get cap-compliant before activating him.  The 31-year-old has a save percentage of .889 in 16 games so far this season.  Meanwhile, Hamonic has missed the last couple of weeks due to an upper-body injury but has remained on Ottawa’s active roster so no roster move is necessary for him to return.  The 33-year-old has five points and 69 blocked shots in 40 appearances.
  • Ducks winger Alex Killorn skated before practice today as he works his way back from knee surgery, relays Derek Lee of The Sporting Tribune (Twitter link). The 34-year-old had the procedure two weeks ago and it carried a four-to-six-week recovery period.  While he didn’t stick around for Anaheim’s full practice, the fact Killorn is back on the ice is a promising sign that his return date could come closer to the earlier part of that range.  He has 19 points in 34 games so far this season, his first with the Ducks.
  • While Connor Bedard has been holding out hope that he could return earlier than expected, Blackhawks head coach Luke Richardson poured cold water on that idea today. He told reporters, including Charlie Roumeliotis of NBC Sports Chicago (Twitter link) that the rookie center’s return is unlikely to come before the original six-week mark.  Despite missing more than a month now, Bedard still leads all rookies in points with 33 in just 39 games.
  • After coming into tonight’s game in relief of Pyotr Kochetkov, Hurricanes goaltender Antti Raanta suffered a lower-body injury, per a team announcement (Twitter link). Raanta made nine saves in his lone period of work.  It has been a rough year for the 34-year-old who had a save percentage of just .870 coming into tonight’s action and cleared waivers back in December.

Golden Knights Notes: Røndbjerg, Dorofeyev, Miromanov

The Vegas Golden Knights have recalled forward Jonas Røndbjerg from a brief stint with their AHL affiliate the Henderson Silver Knights. The 24-year-old has been up and down in recent weeks and was recalled back on January 19th on an emergency loan but then was sent back down to the AHL over the NHL All-Star break.

Røndbjerg is fortunate that Henderson is located close to Las Vegas as this is the tenth time Røndbjerg has been recalled this season. Røndbjerg started the season at a decent pace with a goal and two assists in his first five NHL games but since that time he has been held pointless in nine straight NHL games. At the AHL level the Rungsted, Denmark native has remained a consistent secondary scorer with four goals and 10 assists in 27 games.

In other Golden Knights notes:

  • Jesse Granger of The Athletic reports that Golden Knights forward Pavel Dorofeyev will skate tomorrow but is not well enough to return for Tuesday’s game against the Edmonton Oilers. The 23-year-old didn’t dress for Vegas’ final game before the All-Star break as he has been dealing with an upper-body injury. In 29 games this season, the former third-round pick has seven goals and seven assists and has only registered two minor penalties.
  • The Golden Knights have also recalled Daniil Miromanov from a conditioning loan, although he will remain on the LTIR for the time being. The 26-year-old has been dealing with an undisclosed injury since the start of the regular season and hasn’t seen any NHL action since last year. He played his first game of the year on January 24th with Henderson and tallied a goal and five assists in five AHL games. Miromanov had two goals and four assists in 14 games with Vegas last year and looked like he could challenge for an NHL roster spot after getting long looks the past two seasons.

Vegas Golden Knights Reassign Daniil Miromanov, Jiri Patera

Before the team’s game tonight against the New York Islanders, the Vegas Golden Knights have loaned defenseman Daniil Miromanov to their AHL affiliate, the Henderson Silver Knights on a long-term injury conditioning loan, as well as reassigned goaltender Jiri Patera to the Silver Knights as well.

As an undrafted free agent, Miromanov came to the Vegas organization in 2022, signing away from HC Sochi of the Kontinental Hockey League. With plenty of high-profile injuries to their typical active roster, Miromanov is not necessarily a game-changing reinforcement to inject back into the lineup. Still, it will provide sufficient depth to the Golden Knights’ defensive core once he can fully return. Over both the 2021-22 and 2022-23 NHL seasons, Miromanov has played in a total of 25 games for Vegas, scoring two goals and seven points while averaging a little under 14 minutes of ice time per game.

The much more significant news in this team announcement is the reassignment of Patera, which likely spells the return of Adin Hill between the pipes. Largely serving in a backup role since Hill went down with injury once again in mid-December, Patera has been serviceable, producing a 1-3-0 record in five games played, carrying a .901 SV% and a 3.75 GAA. After having been out for over a month, it may take Hill a short while to get reacquainted with gameplay, but it will at the very least serve as a well-earned break to goaltender Logan Thompson, who has started in the majority of games in Hill’s absence.

In the first 10 games after Hill went down with an injury, the Golden Knights posted a disappointing 3-7-0 record, creating a sizeable gap between them and the first-place Vancouver Canucks in the Pacific Division. However, over the last five games, the team has begun to pick things up a tad, securing a 3-1-1 record, and outscoring their opponents by a margin of five over that stretch.

Afternoon Notes: Golden Knights, Puljujarvi, Meyers

Vegas Golden Knights head coach Bruce Cassidy shared updates on the team’s long list of injuries, sharing that Daniil Miromanov is back on the ice, Keegan Kolesar is still out of the lineup with illness, and that starter Adin Hill has returned to skating on his own but isn’t quite ready to rejoin the team. Cassidy also shared that Shea Theodore is still a ways away from returning. The star defenseman is joined by Miromanov and Hill on injured reserve.

These injuries have underscored what’s been a battered Vegas lineup to start the year. The club currently has a top-six forward in William Karlsson, starter Adin Hill, and four different defensemen on IR. The only on the list to not yet make his season debut is NHL newcomer Miromanov, who is dealing with an undisclosed injury that’s held him out since the start of the year.

The amount of talent being held out of Vegas’ lineup is impressive. Karlsson ranks third on the team in scoring with 32 points in 38 games. Theodore still leads all Knights defenders in scoring, despite missing 18 games, with 18 points in 20 games. And Hill has returned to the impeccable goalie that made him an icon last postseason, boasting a .934 save percentage through 15 games this season. The Golden Knights will be in for a big boost when they’re able to get each of these players back, although how long that may take is still up in the air.

Other notes from around the league:

  • The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins have signed Jesse Puljujarvi to a professional try-out agreement, extending his time in the Penguins organization. Puljujarvi is working his way back from double hip surgery and has been skating with the Pittsburgh lineup at practices. And while his return still seems to be a ways out, this move helps set him up for an AHL conditioning stint once he’s ready to go.
  • The Colorado Avalanche have assigned Ben Meyers to the AHL’s Colorado Eagles. This is likely in an effort to maintain the young forward’s waiver exemption status. Meyers has played in a collective 58 NHL games since joining the Avalanche in 2021-22 and will lose his exemption once he hits 60 games. The 25-year-old centerman has totaled six goals and no assists through those 58 games, adding 37 points in 49 AHL games.
