NCAA Hockey To Allow Juniors Competition This Fall

August 29, 2020 at 3:55 pm CDT | by Zach Leach 4 Comments

Given the unknown status of college sports this fall due to Coronavirus, the NCAA has decided to afford athletes the opportunity to play away from their college teams while remaining enrolled in classes. As USCHO details, outside competition will prove especially valuable to college hockey players. Pending school and conference approval, players will be allowed to compete for junior teams this season if their college seasons are postponed.

While a number of athletic conferences have delayed or cancelled “fall sports”, only the Ivy League has cancelled all sports for the fall semester. While the conference itself does not sponsor hockey, a number of its members play in the ECAC. They include Cornell, Harvard, Dartmouth, Yale, Brown, and Princeton. Depending on the state of COVID-19, other schools or conferences could end up postponing or cancelling competition this fall as well. It also stands to reason that this exception will be extended to the spring semester if the 2020-21 season is cancelled altogether by conferences or the NCAA.

In order for athletes to take part in outside competition this fall, there are some requirements. First and foremost, the schools cannot cover any expenses incurred by the athlete as a result of taking part in junior competition. The athletes must also be in good academic standing and enrolled in classes. Finally, no class time can be missed due to practice or competition with outside teams. Seeing as the vast majority of players who would be taking advantage of this opportunity would not also be able to be taking in-person classes, the class time rule would only apply to online classes with specific meeting times.

One thing that is not changing is that NCAA athletes may not take part in CHL competition. The OHL, WHL, and QMJHL are considered pro leagues under the NCAA’s definition of “amateurism” and anyone playing in these league’s forfeits their NCAA eligibility. The same can be said for European pro leagues. This outside competition exception is likely to impact the USHL more than any other junior league. However, the Canadian Junior-A leagues and European junior leagues could also see an influx of talent, especially for those foreign athletes with immigration issues who are choosing to stay home this semester.

One way or another, this is a win-win for the game of hockey. College athletes are given added flexibility that will allow them to play, junior leagues will receive a boost in talent, and NHL teams will get a full season of scouting for those prospects who otherwise might have been sitting out this fall.

NHL Issues Update On COVID-19 Testing

August 24, 2020 at 1:03 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

In what has become routine, the NHL has issued another update on its COVID-19 testing within the bubble cities of Edmonton and Toronto. Just like the last several weeks, there were zero positive results among the 4,644 tests administered. All members of the remaining team’s 52-member traveling parties were tested daily between August 16-22.

The league has now administered close to 25,000 tests inside the bubble with zero positives.

With more and more teams being eliminated from postseason contention, securing the bubble should be even easier moving forward. So far the league has done an exceptional job keeping its players and staff safe and separated, though there is obviously still more work to be done.

As always, the fight isn’t over yet, but the NHL’s plan for return to play seems to be working perfectly.

NHL Issues Update On COVID-19 Testing

August 10, 2020 at 12:34 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 3 Comments

The qualification round and round-robin games are complete, with the first round of the playoffs set to kick off this week. Players have become acclimated to life in the bubble with few issues, and now the league has provided an update on their COVID-19 testing. For the second week of Phase 4 (Aug 2-8), the league administered 7,245 tests. They received zero positive test results. Every member of the clubs’ 52-member traveling parties was tested regularly.

Another huge step towards finishing the season for the NHL and a great sign for bubble sports in general. The league looks poised to continue without any issue, especially as the numbers dwindle each round. Already the field has been cut by eight, with the Toronto Maple Leafs the most recently eliminated.

As always, the fight isn’t done yet, but the NHL’s plan for return to play seems to be working perfectly.

Vancouver’s Micheal Ferland Injured, Leaving Bubble

August 5, 2020 at 7:49 pm CDT | by Zach Leach 7 Comments

A difficult year for Vancouver Canucks forward Micheal Ferland unfortunately continues. The team has announced that the veteran has sustained an injury that will force him to leave his team and the Edmonton bubble. Ferland is not headed back to Vancouver either, but to his home in Manitoba. There is no word on the nature or extent of Ferland’s latest ailment, but he has been ruled out for the remainder of the Canucks’ qualifying round series and will be evaluated once the series has concluded.

Ferland, 28, is in his first year of a four-year contract signed with Vancouver last summer. He got off to a rocky start to his Canucks tenure when he sustained a concussion in early November. Ferland missed 15 games on his first IR stint, returned briefly in November, and then was sidelined again due to concussion symptoms, missing the team’s final 38 regular season games. As a result, Ferland played in just 14 games and recorded only five points in his first season with the Canucks.

However, the lengthy pause in the NHL season due to Coronavirus allowed Ferland to regain his health and re-join the lineup for the postseason. The physical winger was a noticeable presence in Game One of the qualifying round match-up with the Minnesota Wild too, recording five hits and drawing seven penalty minutes (and a fine). Yet, in Game Two Ferland was held to just four shifts and 2:36 TOI. This was a clear sign that Ferland was not healthy and it is no surprise that he is set to miss more time. It is safe to assume that this absence is related to Ferland’s concussion struggles, especially after a Game One fight, but his official designation is “unfit to play”. More will be known when the Canucks re-evaluate his condition following this series, should they advance.

NHL Issues Update On COVID-19 Testing

August 3, 2020 at 12:53 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 2 Comments

Games are underway and they don’t appear to be stopping anytime soon. The NHL has given another weekly update on their COVID-19 testing, indicating once again that they have had zero positive results inside the bubble. The league administered more than 7,000 tests to all members of the teams’ 52-member traveling parties.

The playoffs have already gotten off to a fiery start with several fines and suspensions along with buzzer-beating goals and overtime heroics. While the lack of fans is disconcerting at times, the NHL has done well to get their players into the bubble safely and securely.

Obviously there are still thousands of tests to go, but things are off to a (relatively) smooth start.

Zero Positive Tests Since Teams Entered The Bubble

July 31, 2020 at 7:00 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose 8 Comments

Just one day before players return to the ice for meaningful games, there is some good news from off the ice.  TSN’s Darren Dreger reports (Twitter link) that there have been zero positive tests for COVID-19 since teams entered the bubble cities in Edmonton and Toronto last weekend.

Testing has ramped up over the past few days as Dreger notes that 1,500 tests are being conducted on a daily basis.  If that number seems high, it’s not just the players for each team that are being tested, but other team officials and executives are as well.  Each team was able to bring 52 people into the bubble and all of them are tested each day.  If there winds up being a positive test, the league should know pretty quickly as Dreger adds that tests are being processed in 24 hours or less.

Things certainly seem to be on the right track as earlier this week, the league announced that there were no positive tests from the final week of training camp.  Add that to today’s news and it’s roughly two weeks since a positive test was recorded.  There is a long way to go to get to the awarding of the Stanley Cup in early October but so far, so good.

Snapshots: Markstrom, Chayka, Hockey East

July 30, 2020 at 8:17 pm CDT | by Zach Leach 1 Comment

One of the more talked-about free agent negotiations this season has been between the Vancouver Canucks and starting goalie Jacob Markstrom, who has been stellar in net this season. Markstrom had a career-best season this year, recording a .918 save percentage and 2.75 GAA. As he heads toward free agency, the Canucks have prioritized keeping him in Vancouver if at all possible. The two sides have been talking throughout the league pause and GM Jim Benning even noted that they spoke again on Tuesday. However, Benning told NHL.com that all negotiations will be put on hold until after the playoffs. “We’re going to get something figured out for him,” Benning said with confidence, but added “We both decided let’s just wait until after the playoffs are done.” How long that postseason run might last remains to be seen. The No. 7 seed out West, the Canucks are set to face the No. 10-seed Minnesota Wild in the qualifying round next week. If they emerge victorious, talks with Markstrom will stay on the back burner for a while longer, but if the Canucks fall to the Wild, they could approach talks very soon. Perhaps they will even be armed with the No. 1 overall pick to help make their case for a long-term extension.

  • As the John Chayka saga continues to unravel, Howie Kussoy of the New York Post has confirmed previous reports that Chayka was interested in a move from the Arizona Coyotes to the New Jersey Devils. It doesn’t end there though. Kussoy writes that Chayka lied to ‘Yotes ownership about having an interview with the Devils ownership, who also own the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers and are a suitor for the MLB’s New York Mets. While this was not a GM position with the Devils, which Arizona had previously denied another NHL team from interviewing Chayka for, he was nevertheless deceptive about his intentions. According to Kussoy, this left his relationship with owner Alex Meruelo “irrevocably damaged” and led to the swift separation between the two sides.
  • Over in the college game, the Hockey East Conference offered some hope for NCAA fans yesterday. The historic hockey conference announced their intention to have a 2020-21 season for both men and women. Due to the convenient geography of the New England-based conference, teams will play conference-heavy schedules that will limit travel and, as a result, potential COVID-19 exposure. As many of their member institutions have seen their primary athletic conferences cancel or postpone fall sports, while other hockey schools – like those Ivy League members of the ECAC – have had all fall competition canceled, Hockey East hopes to start in the fall. They have yet to announce schedules and may delay the start of the season and play a shortened campaign, but college hockey seems to be returning next season after the Coronavirus pandemic ended the season in the midst of conference tournaments and before an NCAA champion could be crowned. The hope is that other conferences can also find a way to follow in the footsteps of Hockey East.

AHL Issues Update On 2020-21 Season

July 30, 2020 at 3:19 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The AHL has finally released some information regarding the 2020-21 season, announcing today that the anticipated start date will be December 4, 2020. The league canceled the remainder of the 2019-20 season in May after the coronavirus outbreak.

Because of the nature of revenue streams in the AHL, next season was still very much in doubt. The league relies on ticket sales even more than the NHL, meaning playing games without fans will require a large financial commitment. Still, minor league hockey is so imperative for the development of players around the league that a start date is an encouraging sign at this point.

Should they return to play in early December, it seems likely that they would be able to fit in a full schedule. The league has not released any details on that schedule, however, and will continue to monitor health guidelines before committing to anything.

NHL Issues Update On COVID-19 Testing

July 27, 2020 at 11:06 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 8 Comments

Just a few hours after the MLB had to postpone several games due to a COVID-19 outbreak, the NHL released their own testing results for the final week of training camp. Those results were of a much different tenor, as the league had zero positive results out of 4,256 tests from last week. More than 800 players were included in those tests. During the two-week Phase 3 period, the league had two positive tests. All 24 teams have arrived in the bubble cities and will continue to be tested daily.

It’s hard to take this news as anything other than extremely encouraging for a league that is trying to finish the 2019-20 season in the safest way possible. The hurdle of getting to the bubble cities healthy was seen by many as the most difficult one, given the strict quarantine protocols they would be under once arriving. The players will now be stuck inside hotels and rinks for the next several weeks (or months, depending on how they perform), effectively completely isolated from the outside world. If they are heading into those bubbles completely healthy, there seems to be a good chance they will be able to finish the season.

It is important to remember that there are still obstacles in the way, but it does appear as though hockey is back. The exhibition schedule will start tomorrow, with official round-robin and qualification round games starting on the weekend.
