COVID Protocol Related Absences: 05/12/21

Each day, the NHL will publicly release the list of players that are unavailable to their respective teams due to being in COVID-19 Protocol. Here is today’s list:

Colorado – Devan Dubnyk
St. Louis – Jake Walman
Washington – Evgeny Kuznetsov

As a reminder, inclusion on this list does not mean that a player has tested positive for Coronavirus or even that they have been confirmed as a close contact to another positive person. Included in the NHL’s list of possible reasons for someone being on the list is are the following:

(1) an initial positive test which remains unconfirmed until confirmatory testing is completed pursuant to the Positive Test Protocol; (2) mandated isolation for symptomatic individuals pursuant to the Positive Test Protocol; (3) required quarantine as a high-risk close contact in accordance with the Positive Test Protocol; (4) isolation based on a confirmed positive test result and/or; (5) quarantine for travel or other reasons as outlined in the COVID-19 Protocol

Players removed today: None

Despite the Blues originally believing that Walman was in the protocol due to a false positive, they released this statement today:

After additional testing, it has been confirmed that Jake Walman has tested positive for COVID-19. Walman, who has been vaccinated, will now fall under the NHL/NHLPA quarantine protocols. Per the NHL/NHLPA agreement, the League will provide all updates.

A positive test result for Walman likely means that he will be unavailable for at least two weeks. He will not be in the Blues’ lineup when they face the Wild tonight or tomorrow, nor when they open the playoffs in the coming days.

Kuznetsov remains in the protocol for his ninth day and it is unclear whether he will be cleared in time for Washington’s series opener against Boston on Saturday. At the very least, he will have not played in a game since May 1. Teammate Ilya Samsonov was also put into the protocol, but since he is on the taxi squad does not need to appear on this list. It will not be clear that he has been removed until he arrives at practice with the Capitals, or the team releases the information.

Walman is added to the protocol today following his positive test result yesterday. The Blues have already indicated that they believe it is a false positive because Walman has been vaccinated and pasted the POC test, but he will remain out for the time being.

The same two players remain out, with Kuznetsov now in the protocol for seven days. The Capitals have just one game left in the regular season, tomorrow night against Boston, meaning the talented center could have to wait until the playoffs begin to get his game legs back under him.

Kuznetsov remains in the protocol for the Capitals, meaning he won’t be available tonight against the Flyers in the team’s 55th game. The team will use Craig Anderson in the net as Ilya Samsonov also remains out. The netminder doesn’t need to be listed here because he is technically on the taxi squad, but the capitals confirmed yesterday he was also in the protocol.

NHL To Relax COVID-19 Protocol For Vaccinated Playoff Teams

Just in time for the Stanley Cup Playoffs, the NHL is set to take a major change to their COVID-19 protocol. As first reported by TSN’s Frank Seravalli, the league has issued a memo to potential playoff clubs detailing new rules relaxing the restrictions initially implemented to combat the Coronavirus. Once 85% of the team, including players, coaches, and staff, have been fully vaccinated, there will be much more freedom granted in health and safety and social interaction areas. This policy will also apply to on-ice officials, once 100% of the crew has been fully vaccinated. By “fully vaccinated”, the league requires that an individual be two weeks removed from their final dose of an approved COVID-19 vaccine.

Once a team receives league approval that the 85% vaccination mark has been reached, the following policies will be relaxed:

Social Gatherings

  • allowed in groups of up to eight people
  • not limited to members of the team
  • may occur indoors or outdoors
  • masks and social distancing not required
  • all individuals must be fully vaccinated

Masks

  • not required in non-public areas of arenas and practice facilities
  • not required at teams meetings

Travel and Leisure

  • permitted to gather in hotel rooms
  • permitted to eat during air and bus travel
  • permitted to dine at restaurants with outdoors seating or an exclusive indoor dining area
  • permitted to golf as a group

Testing

  • no longer required on off days

These new policies will be well-received by players, coaches, and officials alike, who have endured a very sheltered existence over the past few months. Unfortunately, not everyone will be able to reap the benefits. Seravalli notes that none of the Canadian clubs are “anywhere close” to the 85% full vaccination mark and may not get there at all by the end of the postseason. Slow vaccination rates in Canada mean that few Canadian players have received their first dose of a two-dose COVID vaccine and second doses could be months away. With it still being unclear if the North Division champion will even be able to play home games in the final two rounds of the playoffs, these relaxed policies could join home ice as another benefit for the American clubs this postseason.

No new names today, but it was confirmed that Ilya Samsonov is also in the COVID protocol with Kuznetsov. The Capitals goaltender is technically on the taxi squad, so doesn’t need to be listed here. Leivo finally gets cleared and can rejoin the Flames for the last few games of the season, after spending nearly two weeks in the protocol.

No new players hit the list, but Kuznetsov remains out for the Capitals. This is his third day in the protocol and certainly makes his status for tomorrow’s game against the Philadelphia Flyers uncertain. Still, this can be considered something of a win for the NHL as they try to get as close to clear as possible before the playoffs begin.

Kuznetsov (and teammate Ilya Samsonov) did not play last night for the Capitals due to disciplinary reasons and now finds himself in the COVID protocol. That means he could miss tomorrow’s rematch against the Rangers, though it is not clear how long he will be kept out at this point. He missed several weeks on the list earlier this year. As Stephen Whyno of the Associated Press points out, players on the taxi squad, which currently includes Samsonov, do not have to be listed on the public COVID protocol list, even if they are unavailable to the team.

The NHL can’t seem to keep the board clean, as even with Hayden coming off they will see the number grow to four. Svechnikov has been added for the Red Wings, who recently had Adam Erne also miss games on a short stint. Svechnikov played against Tampa Bay on Saturday, but for now, is unable to practice with the team. It is unclear if he will miss any game action as the Red Wings don’t play again until Friday.

One name added, one name removed for the NHL today, as Subban is eligible to rejoin the Devils. Hayden played last night against the Golden Knights but won’t be available for the rematch. Hopefully, his is a contact situation or false positive, but both the Coyotes and Golden Knights will be a team to watch here the next few days.
