Coronavirus

COVID Protocol Related Absences: 04/30/21

April 30, 2021 at 4:12 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

Each day, the NHL will publicly release the list of players that are unavailable to their respective teams due to being in COVID-19 Protocol. Here is today’s list:

Anaheim – Adam Henrique
Calgary – Josh Leivo
New Jersey – P.K. Subban, Jonas Siegenthaler

As a reminder, inclusion on this list does not mean that a player has tested positive for Coronavirus or even that they have been confirmed as a close contact to another positive person. Included in the NHL’s list of possible reasons for someone being on the list is are the following:

(1) an initial positive test which remains unconfirmed until confirmatory testing is completed pursuant to the Positive Test Protocol; (2) mandated isolation for symptomatic individuals pursuant to the Positive Test Protocol; (3) required quarantine as a high-risk close contact in accordance with the Positive Test Protocol; (4) isolation based on a confirmed positive test result and/or; (5) quarantine for travel or other reasons as outlined in the COVID-19 Protocol

Players removed today: Adam Erne, Detroit Red Wings

Erne has come off after just a few days on the list, suggesting he did not test positive for coronavirus this time around. He was already included in the Red Wings outbreak earlier in the season and will now be able to rejoin the team to continue his season. The other few names have remained, at least for now.

It can’t really be called a win for the league, but at least there are no other Red Wings present on today’s list. Erne appeared yesterday after playing against the Blue Jackets the night before, but neither team has added any players today. Of note, Erne was also included in Detroit’s outbreak earlier in the season, so this stint could potentially be a false positive. No matter why he is in it, he won’t be available for the Red Wings tonight.

The NHL can’t quite get the COVID list down to zero, as Erne joins a few other players on Wednesday. The Red Wings forward played last night against the Blue Jackets, so the situation with both teams is one to monitor over the next few days. The 26-year-old has actually had a decent season, setting a new career-high in goals with 11 and seeing more ice time than he ever has.

The NHL will take days like this, with no one added and no one removed. Henrique hasn’t been joined by any other Ducks, while Leivo remains the only Flames player several days after his original addition.

As Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet writes, teams around the league were told that there will be serious consequences for any postseason COVID outbreaks that result from not following protocols. That could even include the forfeiture of a series, something that would be a disaster for everyone involved. Hopefully, nothing like that occurs as we move into the Stanley Cup playoffs in the coming weeks.

Players removed today: Joonas Donskoi, Colorado Avalanche; Mikko Rantanen, Colorado Avalanche

The Avalanche have completely cleared their board, meaning every player is technically available to them. It may still take some time for players to get up to speed, but it appears as though they’re in the clear in terms of their latest outbreak.

The only new name today so far is Henrique, who happened to play for the Ducks against the Golden Knights on Saturday. Hopefully, his appearance is not based on a positive test result and he can rejoin his teammates in the coming days.

No news is good news on this front as while no one came off, there were no newcomers to the list either.  Of the five on the list, Donskoi has been on the longest going back to the 16th but he still should be on there for a few more days at least.  Accordingly, barring Leivo or Siegenthaler’s tests being false positives, there shouldn’t be anyone coming off the list over the next few days.

As reported earlier today, Siegenthaler has joined Subban in the protocol. The Devils still played this afternoon against the Penguins and are scheduled to take on the Flyers tomorrow evening.

Of note, no more Flames have appeared, suggesting that the team may have contained the spread after Leivo tested positive earlier this week.

The Flames canceled morning skate today after Leivo’s positive test but will play as scheduled this evening against the Canadiens.

For Colorado, getting Grubauer back is incredibly important as they try to get back on track and chase down the Golden Knights. The goaltender has been outstanding for the Avalanche this season, posting a .920 save percentage through 34 appearances.

Calgary Flames Cancel Morning Skate Due To COVID

April 23, 2021 at 10:21 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Calgary Flames have had a player test positive for coronavirus, resulting in the cancelation of today’s morning skate. The Flames are set to take on the Montreal Canadiens this evening and the game is still currently scheduled as planned. The rest of the team and staff have tested negative and the player in question has been placed in isolation.

As we approach the end of the season, a COVID outbreak could spell immense trouble for the NHL. There aren’t many days left to reschedule games into without pushing the start of the playoffs back. In the North Division, the Flames already have four games in a row scheduled against the Vancouver Canucks, meaning their schedule doesn’t end until May 19. That’s more than a week after the season was originally supposed to end.

Hopefully, the Flames are able to contain the spread of the virus and will not have to postpone any games. Even if they are able to play today, whoever did test positive will not be available. The identity of the player will not be released until the COVID Protocol Related Absences list comes out.

Great news for the NHL as the number of players in the COVID protocol remains at four. Colorado will resume their season tonight against the Blues and though they’ll be without three key players, it is good news just to be hitting the ice again.
