Bill Peters No Longer Head Coach Of Calgary Flames

November 29, 2019 at 10:17 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 54 Comments

The Calgary Flames have accepted the resignation of Bill Peters. Effective immediately, he is no longer the head coach of the hockey club. The team has concluded their investigation of the events brought to light this week by former NHL player Akim Aliu. Geoff Ward will serve as interim head coach.

Peters, who was hired in 2018 after resigning from his position with the Carolina Hurricanes, is alleged to have uttered several racial epithets during his time with the Rockford IceHogs in the 2009-10 season. He admitted as much in a letter to Flames GM Brad Treliving, but called it an isolated incident. Aliu disagreed with that letter, calling it “misleading, insincere and concerning.”

There were other claims of abuse from former players too. Michal Jordan, who played for the Hurricanes under Peters between 2014-16, alleged that the coach physically abused him and other players on the bench. New Carolina head coach Rod Brind’Amour, who served as an assistant at the time, confirmed the incident took place but told reporters it had been dealt with internally. Peter Karmanos, who was the owner of the Hurricanes at the time, told Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times that had he been made aware of the incident he would have fired Peters immediately.

The Flames won on Wednesday without Peters behind the bench. The team is sitting fifth in the Pacific Division with a 12-12-4 record.

The NHL released a statement explaining that their investigation into the incident is not over. Aliu and other relevant individuals will still meet with the league in the coming days.

Latest On Bill Peters Investigation, Admission

November 28, 2019 at 6:54 pm CDT | by Zach Leach 3 Comments

Thursday: Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet notes that the Flames’ investigation is “reaching its conclusion.” Friedman believes that Peters will be removed as head coach of the Flames.

Wednesday: A letter from Peters to Treliving has been shared by Sportsnet’s Eric Francis. In the letter, Peters admits to using the offensive language described by Aliu during the incident in question. It’s unclear at this point how this admission will impact the ongoing investigation, as well as the Flames’ ultimate decision.

Calgary Flames head coach Bill Peters was already on the hot seat after a surprisingly poor start to the season. However, he came under fire this week for an entirely different reason, facing accusations of unacceptable off-ice conduct regarding former player Akim Aliu. The repercussions of an ongoing joint investigation between the Flames, NHL, and NHLPA are already being felt. TSN’s Frank Seravalli reports that Peters has left the team and there is a chance he may not return.

As of right now, Peters remains the head coach in Calgary. However, he will not be behind the bench for the team tonight in Buffalo and into the foreseeable future. GM Brad Treliving is the only member of the player operations side of the organization staying in contact with Peters, as his coaching staff, and associate head coach Geoff Ward in particular, have take complete control over the team. Seravalli believes that the situation could be permanent, as he reports that “it seems to be trending towards Peters losing his job.”

However, he warns that this is not a simple process. There is no precedent for an NHL coach to be fired for off-ice conduct, making this investigation and the decision on how to handle the results brand new ground for the league and the Flames. There is also legal red tape that Calgary must traverse in order to fire Peters for-cause. Seravalli has spoken with several of Aliu’s former teammates, all of whom have backed up his allegations against Peters, so it is very likely that the investigation comes to same conclusions that the coach is indeed guilty of these accusations. If so, he will almost certainly be fired. However, the parting of ways will be neither quick nor clean for the Flames.

Poll: Which Teams Will Buck The Thanksgiving Playoff Trend In 2019-20?

November 27, 2019 at 5:54 pm CDT | by Zach Leach 4 Comments

Just how important is playoff position in just the second month of the regular season? Very, if you look at recent results. Over the past six years, more than 70% of teams in a playoff position at American Thanksgiving have held on to their spot. While last year was slightly below the mark – 11 of 16 teams (69%) in a playoff position on November 22 qualified – the standings at the time were even more predictive than usual. The Lightning, Predators, Flames, Maple Leafs, Jets, and Sharks all finished in the same divisional seed that they occupied at Thanksgiving.

So who were the outliers in 2018-19? Obviously, the St. Louis Blues’ return from the basement of the league standings to win the Stanley Cup is a story that will stand the test of time. However, four other clubs also turned their seasons around: the Islanders, Penguins, Hurricanes, and Golden Knights. And the teams whose seasons took a turn for the worse: the Sabres, Wild, Rangers, Canadiens, and Ducks. Ironically, the Canadiens were narrowly inside the playoff window on Thanksgiving and ended up just barely outside in the spring. Meanwhile, the Ducks, Oilers, and Coyotes were all tied for the lowest playoff-qualifying record on Thanksgiving, with the Ducks getting the tiebreaker at the time, and all three failed to qualify for the postseason.

This season has gotten off to an unpredictable start, which could potentially threaten to derail the Thanksgiving trend. Several teams considered Cup contenders are currently outside the playoff picture, while multiple surprises currently occupy a spot. With Thanksgiving arriving tomorrow, this is the current status of the NHL standings (reminder – points percentage is the ideal way of viewing NHL standings):

Eastern Conference

M1 New York Islanders (.773)
A1 Boston Bruins (.771)

M2 Washington Capitals (.740)
M3 Carolina Hurricanes (.646)

A2 Tampa Bay Lightning (.619)
A3 Florida Panthers (.604)

W1 Pittsburgh Penguins (.625)
W2 Philadelphia Flyers (.604)

Outside the Playoff Picture: Montreal Canadiens (.563), New York Rangers (.545), Columbus Blue Jackets (.522), Buffalo Sabres (.521), Toronto Maple Leafs (.520), Ottawa Senators (.479), New Jersey Devils (.435), Detroit Red Wings (.327)

Western Conference

C1 St. Louis Blues (.680)
P1 Edmonton Oilers (.673)

C2 Dallas Stars (.615)
C3 Colorado Avalanche (.609)

P2 Arizona Coyotes (.620)
P3 Vancouver Canucks (.560)

W1 Winnipeg Jets (.604)
W2 Nashville Predators (.543)

Outside the Playoff Picture: San Jose Sharks (.540), Chicago Blackhawks (.521), Anaheim Ducks (.500), Vegas Golden Knights (.500), Calgary Flames (.481), Minnesota Wild (.480), Los Angeles Kings (.417)

2018-19 playoff teams jump off the page as potential candidates to disrupt the status quo. Particularly in the Pacific Division, it is hard to image none of the Golden Knights – who beat the Thanksgiving odds last year – the Sharks or the Flames will make the playoffs, especially as they look up at the Oilers, Coyotes, and Canucks.  There could also be hope in West for the Ducks and Blackhawks, who sit at .500 currently. Over in the East, the Maple Leafs stick out like a sore thumb among non-playoff teams and could be line for improvement following their coaching change. But will it be enough given their difficult start? The Canadiens will also hope for a reverse of fortunes from last year, going from first team out in the conference at Thanksgiving to in the postseason come April. The Sabres have started hot and collapsed two years in a row, but there is still time for them to turn things back around. All three Atlantic clubs see a Panthers team with plenty of problems ahead of them in the standings right now. Meanwhile, the Rangers and Blue Jackets will look to make an unlikely run to the postseason as they chase down the Flyers.

What do you think? Which of these teams will find their way into the playoff picture and which will fall victim to the Thanksgiving postseason trend? Select as many teams below as you like, but remember that for every addition, there has to be a subtraction of a current playoff team.

NHL, Flames Looking Into Allegations Against Bill Peters

November 26, 2019 at 10:31 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 13 Comments

This week several former players have come out to speak their mind about interactions with former Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Mike Babcock. As part of the wave of stories on social media, former NHL player Akim Aliu spoke out about a Babcock protege, Calgary Flames head coach Bill Peters, and their time together with the Rockford IceHogs, the AHL affiliate of the Chicago Blackhawks.

Peters was the head coach of the IceHogs when Aliu was a rookie in 2009-10. The 30-year old alleges that Peters “dropped the N bomb several times” in the team’s locker room because of Aliu’s music choices.

Flames GM Brad Treliving addressed the media after last night’s Flames game:

During tonight’s game I was made aware of a tweet from former player Akim Aliu. Obviously we were playing so I haven’t had a chance to sit down with Bill or our people internally, to talk about this and get to the bottom of it. I would say we take these matters very, very seriously.

Until such time as we have a chance to speak about it internally, we obviously want to address you people – we’re aware of it. Made aware of it during the game here this evening. Like I said, I haven’t had a chance to talk to Bill. I will be doing that and until such time we won’t have any further comment about it but we will address it and get back to you people once we have a chance to speak internally.

The NHL also released a short statement on the situation:

The behavior that has been alleged is repugnant an unacceptable. We will have no further comment until we have had an opportunity to look into the matter thoroughly.

Darren Dreger of TSN reports that the NHL and Flames have been in contact regarding the situation and are expected to have “further discussions” today. Peters was hired by the Flames in 2018 and is under contract through the 2020-21 season.

Frank Seravalli of TSN also spoke to some of Aliu’s teammates who backed up the allegations, describing the incident in detail. Aliu also got on record to explain the situation fully, telling Seravalli that he regrets not standing up for himself and others at the time.

Calgary Flames Activate T.J. Brodie From Injured Reserve

November 25, 2019 at 1:13 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The good news continues for T.J. Brodie and the Calgary Flames, following his recent episode at practice. The defenseman has been activated from injured reserve, while Brandon Davidson has been sent to the minor leagues.

Brodie collapsed during a practice earlier this month and was taken to hospital. When all tests came back negative and team doctors diagnosed it as a fainting issue, Brodie slowly returned to practice and will now rejoin the lineup when the Flames take on the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Calgary won their last game but are still 3-6-1 in their last ten and sitting in sixth place in the Pacific Division. Brodie’s return will be a welcome addition, though the team needs more from the rest of the guys on the ice as well.

Pacific Notes: Vancouver Penalty Kill, Brodie, Nygard, Vilardi

November 23, 2019 at 7:27 pm CDT | by Holger Stolzenberg Leave a Comment

The Vancouver Canucks may not be leading any categories in their penalty kill, but with a 13th-ranked special teams unit that kills off penalties at 82.9 percent, the team found itself challenged against Washington Saturday as the team was without four of its top penalty killers. The team played without Jay Beagle (hip), Brandon Sutter (groin), Tyler Motte (foot) and Alexander Edler (upper body), yet still fared quite well shutting down Washington’s power play on three separate occasions to win the game in a 2-1 shootout.

The Province’s Ben Kuzma writes that the team may be without that group for several more days and the success of the team’s battered penalty kill will likely have a big impact on the remainder of their three-game road trip throughout next week.

  • The Calgary Flames could be getting back defenseman T.J. Brodie sooner than later. The blueliner, who collapsed during practice on Nov. 14, skated on his own Saturday and, according to a Sportsnet report, is expected to join practice with the Flames on Sunday. The team has done a barrage of tests, but have found no evidence that Brodie’s collapse was nothing more than him fainting. Brodie has joined the team on their road trip and may return to action as soon as Monday against Pittsburgh. The 29-year-old has eight assists in 21 games.
  • Edmonton Oilers forward Joakim Nygard was brought in from the SHL to add a speedy winger who can immediately become a top-nine presence, who could help their quick-moving centers with some secondary scoring. However, despite his impressive speed in 10 games, Nygard just has one goal to show for it as he has struggled to finish around the net. Edmonton Sun’s Jim Matheson suggests that Nygard may be more of a third-line winger as opposed to a second-liner. “There’s still another level there,” said head coach Dave Tippett. “The good thing about him? He’s really determined, he’s not here to mess around. He wants to be a good player and that’s positive to see.”
  • The Athletic’s Lisa Dillman (subscription required) writes that Los Angeles Kings prospect Gabe Vilardi fared well in Friday’s AHL debut. The 11th-overall pick in 2017 has barely played in the past year and a half with a back injury, having seen four games with the AHL Ontario Reign last season. While Vilardi didn’t register a point, he did have a breakaway opportunity and looked happy throughout the contest. “Now, to see him last night, he had a smile on his face,” Kings director of player personnel Glen Murray said. “We lost the game (4-1). But for him, it was successful. It was a passing grade, for sure. He’s come a long way. It’s been a long year. He did well. To be off a year – his game legs aren’t going to be there – but he made some nice plays, won a lot of faceoffs and he had this breakaway in the third period last night.”

Johnny Gaudreau's Struggles Still Don't Make Him A Viable Trade Candidate

November 22, 2019 at 8:52 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose 4 Comments

  • Johnny Gaudreau’s struggles have led some to suggest that the Flames should consider moving the winger. Eric Duhatschek of The Athletic details (subscription required) the reasons why they shouldn’t be doing so, highlighted by the fact that making an in-season deal of that type of magnitude is extremely difficult to pull off while still getting full value in return.  After scoring three times in his first five games, he has just two in 20 contests since then.  Nonetheless, he still sits second on the team in scoring despite his struggles.

Calgary Flames Not Looking At Coaching Changes

November 22, 2019 at 4:51 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

The Calgary Flames are mired in a six-game losing streak and are now only ahead of the Los Angeles Kings in the Pacific Division. That’s a far cry from the team that won the Western Conference last season by six points, going 50-25-7. Still, even though the team has faced adversity this season and some are speculating about big changes, GM Brad Treliving isn’t considering one. On Sportsnet radio today, Treliving put his faith in the current group:

This is a good group that is underperforming. We’ve got to find a way to get back to a being a good group that is performing. It starts with myself. I believe fully in this coaching staff. I don’t stay in tune to the social media world, but the last couple of days I’ve been asked about changes.

The coaches aren’t going anywhere. Our top players aren’t going anywhere. While the outside world wants to—and rightly so—count us out, this is when you bunker in and get into the foxhole and try to make your team better.

Not only has there been speculation about the coaching staff, but the top players on Calgary have taken their fair share of criticism. Johnny Gaudreau has 18 points through 25 games but just one assist in his last six, while Sean Monahan has scored just five goals all season. This statement from Treliving should calm the trade speculation waters, but there is still a lot of work to be done in Calgary to get them back to contending.

It is interesting that he specified the “top players” aren’t going anywhere, which will leave room for some continued talk about other names like Travis Hamonic. The defenseman is an unrestricted free agent at the end of the year and has shut down any extension talks, making his a tricky situation to navigate. If the team is not contending for a playoff spot by the deadline, it might make sense to cash in an asset like Hamonic to improve their future.

Treliving also announced that T.J. Brodie would be rejoining the team on their current road trip, but he is still not cleared to play since his collapse at practice recently.

T.J. Brodie Released From Hospital

November 21, 2019 at 3:20 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

November 21: Flames’ GM Brad Treliving issued an update on Brodie’s status:

TJ has been working out for the past several days and today skated on his own under the supervision of our medical staff. Over this past week he has had consultations with appropriate specialists in Calgary. To date all medical evaluations and testing have been reassuring. We still work to complete final testing and are optimistic he will re-join the team in the near future. TJ has been placed on injury reserve retroactive to November 14th.

November 15: After a scary incident at Calgary Flames practice, word has come down that T.J. Brodie is feeling better. Brodie collapsed and was convulsing on the ice before being taken to hospital, but today Dr. Ian Auld explained at a press conference that the incident was more likely related to fainting than to a significant brain issue. Several tests came back negative, though the team is still taking it slow and making sure he has fully recovered.

There is no timetable for Brodie’s return and in the meantime the Flames have recalled Oliver Kylington from the AHL. In order to fit him in, Juuso Valimaki has been moved to long-term injured reserve.

Brodie is an extremely important part of the Flames’ defense, but obviously everyone involved is concerned with his long-term health.

Sam Bennett Placed On Long-Term Injured Reserve

November 20, 2019 at 2:53 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

The Calgary Flames have moved forward Sam Bennett to long-term injured reserve, taking him out of the lineup for the next while. With the added cap flexibility however they have recalled Tobias Rieder and Alexander Yelsesin, giving them some added depth while they deal with the injury.

Bennett missed Calgary’s last game with the upper-body injury, and will now be out at minimum 24 days or ten games from the last time he played, November 16th. Previously listed as week-to-week, there’s no clear indication of when he will be ready to return.

Reider’s return isn’t much of a surprise after he was sent to the minor leagues just yesterday, but Yelesin is an intriguing new face for fans to watch. The 23-year old defenseman was signed out of the KHL this summer and has played in 15 games with the Stockton heat this season. Not much of an offensive threat, he nevertheless was a KHL All-Star last season and will help the team fill in the absence of T.J. Brodie who continues recovering after his collapse at practice recently.

Yelesin was signed to a two-year entry-level contract, that interestingly includes some hefty potential performance bonuses. The only way he would earn those is in the NHL, meaning this represents a big opportunity for the young defenseman.
