Evening Snapshots: Olympics, Ducks, Ristolainen

March 23, 2017 at 6:25 pm CDT | by Mike Furlano Leave a Comment

News and notes from around the NHL this evening:

  • International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) President Rene Fasal publicly stated today that the NHL has until the end of April to decide whether NHL players will play in the 2018 Winter Olympics, reports The Associated Press. NHL participation in the upcoming games has been a point of contention this year. Most recently, Steve Keating of Reuters reported that Gary Bettman stated that everyone “should assume the players are not going.” Whether or not Fasal’s deadline is a hard deadline or a soft one, Olympic participation may dominate hockey conversation when the League wants the attention focused on its first round playoffs.
  • The Anaheim Ducks have reassigned forward Ondrej Kase to the AHL San Diego Gulls, reports Eric Stephens of the OC Register. The move comes as little surprise since Kase was scratched three times in the last four games, and failed to break the eight-minute mark in his last two appearances. In 51 games for the Ducks Kase scored 5G and 9A. In Kase’s nine games with the Gulls earlier this season he scored 3G and 4A, and a similar production streak could have him back up the NHL before the playoffs.
  • The NHL Department of Player Safety released its video explanation regarding its decision to suspend Buffalo Sabres defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen. Ristolainen received a three game suspension for interference after hitting Pittsburgh Penguins forward Jake Guentzel. The League’s decision was based on two points: (1) Guentzel did not touch the puck before being hit, and (2) the onus was on Ristolainen to alter course after the pass to Guentzel was tipped. The league did not accept Ristolainen’s defense that because he was skating backwards into the hit, he could not move in time. The league retorted that it was Ristolainen’s choice to lead into a hit that way, and he has to take responsibility for the consequences.

Matthew Tkachuk Suspended Two Games

March 20, 2017 at 7:56 pm CDT | by Mike Furlano 1 Comment

The NHL Department of Player Safety suspended Calgary Flames forward Matthew Tkachuk two games tonight. The DoPS reviewed Tkachuk’s elbow on Los Angeles Kings defenseman Drew Doughty in last night’s matchup between the Flames and the Kings. According to TSN.ca, Tkachuk will forfeit $10,277.78 in salary, with that amount going to the Players Emergency Assistance Fund.

Tkachuk will miss the Flames’ games against the Washington Capitals and the Nashville Predators. The Calgary rookie is having an excellent season stat-wise, scoring 13G and 33A in 68 career games. The feisty forward was not expected to make it out of training camp, but his excellent play forced Calgary’s hand.

The Los Angeles Kings play the Flames twice more this season. It is possible that the Kings play Tkachuk a bit chippier than usual in those games.

Recapping Today’s NHL College Free Agent Signings

March 20, 2017 at 7:34 pm CDT | by Mike Furlano Leave a Comment

Today was a busy day for NHL GMs as three teams signed a total of four NCAA college hockey free agents.

Tim Clifton – San Jose Sharks
The San Jose Sharks officially signed forward Tim Clifton to a two-year, two-way deal today. Clifton just finished his fourth season with Quinnipiac University, and put up 13G and 12A in 39 games. Clifton is expected to join the San Jose Barracuda—the Sharks’ AHL affiliate—to finish out the rest on the season.

Mitch Hults – Anaheim Ducks
The Anaheim Ducks dipped into the college free agent market by signing Lake Superior State University forward Mitch Hults. Hults had 11G and 23A in 36 games for his school. Hults signed a two-year entry-level deal with the Ducks, and will report to the San Diego Gulls for the rest of the AHL season

Austin Ortega – Anaheim Ducks
The Ducks continued raiding the college free agent market by signing University of Nebraska-Omaha forward Austin Ortega to what looks to be an amateur try-out agreement with the San Diego Gulls. Ortega had an excellent season, scoring 20G and 27A in 38 games for his school.

Alex Kile – Buffalo Sabres
The Buffalo Sabres AHL affiliate Rochester Americans signed University of Michigan forward Alex Kile. Kile captained the Michigan Wolverines to a disappointing 13-19-3 record and scoring just 7G and 7A in 28 games.

Evening Snapshots: Callahan, Michalek, Backes

March 20, 2017 at 6:08 pm CDT | by Mike Furlano 1 Comment

News and notes from around the NHL this evening:

  • The Detroit Red Wings reassigned forward Mitch Callahan back down to the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins. Callahan went pointless in his four games this March while averaging 7:15min a night. The former sixth round draft pick fared better in the AHL, where he put up 14G and 22A in 53 games. Callahan is in the final year of his contract—worth $600K at the NHL level—and though he was drafted by the New York Rangers in 2009, he’s only played for the Red Wings organization so far in his career.
  • Arizona Coyotes defenseman Zbynek Michalek makes his season debut tonight against the Nashville Predators, reports AZ Central’s Sarah McLellan. Michalek has spent the entire season with the Tucson Roadrunners in the AHL, scoring 6G and 8A in 43 games. He also scored one goal in three World Cup of Hockey games for his native Czech Republic. This is Michalek’s third stint with the Coyotes. He was signed by the Minnesota Wild in 2001 but traded to the Coyotes in 2005. The Coyotes then traded Michalek to the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2010 only to acquire him right back in 2012. He was then traded to the St. Louis Blues in 2015 before re-signing with Arizona in the offseason.
  • Boston Bruins forward David Backes will play tonight against the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Bruins announced that Backes joined the team for warmups after missing the pregame skate this morning due to illness. The Bruins will need all hands on deck tonight as they play the Maple Leafs in a game with significant playoff importance. The Maple Leafs are only three points back of the Bruins for 3rd in the Atlantic Division, and the Maple Leafs have a game in hand.

Evening Snapshots: Beauts, DeAngelo, USA Women’s Hockey

March 19, 2017 at 8:30 pm CDT | by Mike Furlano 1 Comment

News and notes from around the NHL this evening:

  • The Buffalo Beauts of the National Women’s Hockey League (NWHL) won the League Championship—called the Isobel Cup—tonight by defeating the Boston Pride 3-2. The top womens league in North America is in its second year and consists of four teams. The NWHL faced controversy this season after announcing midway the season that it would cut players’ salary by 50% due to financial constraints. The league then shortened its season to accommodate the 2017 IIHF World Championships and 2018 Olympic preparation.
  • AZCentral’s Sarah McLellan reports that Arizona Coyotes head coach Dave Tippett expects no supplemental discipline for defenseman Anthony DeAngelo’s boarding penalty yesterday. DeAngelo earned a five-minute major penalty and a game misconduct after boarding St. Louis Blues forward Zach Sanford in just the 2nd minute of the game. A suspension would be the second one of DeAngelo’s season. In January he received a three-game suspension for abuse of an official.
  • Stephen Whyno of the Associated Press reported today that top executives from USA Hockey will meet with representatives from the Women’s National Team tomorrow to discuss the ongoing wage dispute. Last Wednesday players from the team announced that they would boycott the upcoming World Championships—beginning March 31st in Plymouth, Michigan—if they do not receive a better wage structure. The players say that USA Hockey only pays each player $1,000 a month for the six months prior to the Olympic Games. The players seek something more substantial for the period between the Olympics.

Sabres Need Defensive Reinforcements

March 19, 2017 at 7:11 pm CDT | by Mike Furlano Leave a Comment

Bill Hoppe of the Times Herald pointed out that the Buffalo Sabres are down to four defenseman after Friday’s game against the Anaheim Ducks. The Sabres lost defencemen Taylor Fedun and Cody Franson to injuries—Fedun with a foot injury and Franson with an unspecified injury.

Fedun and Franson join Justin Falk (calf) and Dmitry Kulikov (upper body), leaving the Sabres with only Rasmus Ristolainen, Zach Bogosian, Josh Gorges, and Jake McCabe. The Sabres play the Detroit Red Wings on Monday night and coach Dan Bylsma was quoted as saying that none of the injured defensemen could play in that game.

That leaves the Sabres in need of at least two call-ups from the AHL Rochester Americans (Amerks). The leading candidates include newly acquired Mat Bodie, Erik Burgdoerfer, and Casey Nelson.

The Sabres acquired Mat Bodie from the New York Rangers in exchange for Daniel Catenacci. Bodie had 8G and 22A in 45 games for the AHL Hartford Wolf Pack, and 2G and 1A in 7 games for Rochester. He currently leads all Amerks defensemen in points. Second in points among active Amerks defensemen is Erik Burgdoerfer. The American native has 1G and 16A in 50 games for the Amerks, but went pointless in two games for the Sabres earlier this year. Finally, the Sabres could recall 24 year-old defenseman Casey Nelson. Nelson has 4 assists in 16 career NHL games over two years, and 4G and 9A in 45 AHL games this season.

Calgary Flames Sign Tyler Parsons and Ryan Lomberg

March 19, 2017 at 5:39 pm CDT | by Mike Furlano Leave a Comment

The Calgary Flames signed a three-year, entry-level deal with drafted goaltender Tyler Parsons today. The Flames drafted Parsons 54th overall (2nd round) in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft. Parson currently plays for the London Knights in the Ontario Hockey League.

The signing caps a successful year for Parsons. The American goaltender led Team USA to a gold medal at the World Junior Championships this winter—stopping 46 shots in the gold medal game. Parsons currently sports a 2.18 GAA and a .917 SV% with the London Knights, and backstopped them to a Memorial Cup last season. Parsons started the season at the Flames training camp, and even played a period against the Vancouver Canucks.

The signing precedes a summer where the Flames need to decide who plays between the pipes. Both Brian Elliott and Chad Johnson are free agents at the end of the year, and it is unclear whether Calgary re-signs either. Elliott’s play has improved as of late, but his early troubles will not shake his reputation as a streaky goaltender.

The Flames also signed forward Ryan Lomberg to a two-year, two-way deal starting next season. Lomberg currently plays for the AHL Stockton Heat where he has 8G and 11A in 57 games. The 22 year-old Ontario native went undrafted before signing an AHL deal in 2015.

Unpacking The Court’s Decision On The Wideman Suspension

March 16, 2017 at 8:32 pm CDT | by Mike Furlano 2 Comments

Yesterday the Southern District of New York confirmed a neutral arbitrator’s decision to reduce Dennis Wideman’s suspension from 20 games to 10 games. Wideman incurred the suspension after striking a referee during a game late last season (video link). Unless the NHL decides to appeal—which is unlikely given the ruling—this ends the Wideman disciplinary issue between the NHL and NHLPA.

The controversy centered on whether Rule 40.2 (intent to injure an official) or 40.3 (no intent to injure an official) applies. The NHL initially suspended Wideman 20 games under Rule 40.2. Rule 40.2 states that any player who deliberately strikes an official and causes injury, or deliberately applies physical force with intent to injure shall be suspended no less than 20 games. The rule defines intent to injure as any physical force that a player knew or should have known could reasonably be expected to cause injury. The NHLPA argued that 40.3 applied instead, which carries a lesser minimum suspension of 10 games. The NHLPA argued that Wideman’s concussion sustained just prior to hitting the official made him unable to comprehend the situation enough to satisfy intent to injure.

Under the CBA, the NHLPA can first appeal to Commissioner Gary Bettman. If the NHLPA is dissatisfied with the Commissioner’s decision, it could appeal to a neutral arbitrator. The arbitrator would not conduct a new hearing, but rather review Bettman’s decision, and hear new evidence not presented at the initial hearings. Bettman confirmed the NHL’s 20 game suspension, so the NHLPA appealed to the neutral arbitrator.

The neutral arbitrator ruled that the evidence did not support the NHL’s decision that Rule 40.2 applied. Rather, he found that 40.3 applied, and reduced Wideman’s suspension to 10 games.

The arbitrator’s decision wrestled with the CBA’s internal inconsistencies. The CBA defines the standard of review for the arbitrator, but those standards contradict themselves. First, the CBA says that the arbitrator must determine whether the NHL’s decision was supported by substantial evidence. Second, the CBA authorizes the arbitrator to consider new evidence not presented to the Commissioner. The introduction of new evidence seems to contradict reviewing whether the Commissioner’s decision was supported by the previous evidence.

The arbitrator resolved this by stating that the standard of review is whether the Commissioner’s decision is supported by the all the evidence, including the new evidence not previously available. If the arbitrator determines that the decision is not supported by the evidence, then the arbitrator has full remedial authority to issue another ruling.

Using this standard, the Arbitrator ruled that there was little to no evidence supporting Bettman’s decision that Wideman intended to injure the referee. He based this on two findings. First, that there was “not even a scintilla of evidence” that Wideman—with an excellent disciplinary record—would intentionally strike the referee. Second, that because Wideman was concussed (both parties agreed) he could not have anticipated that his applied force would cause the referee to fall and bang his head. The second finding was based on the arbitrator’s finding that the frame-by-frame video replay showed Wideman’s pushing the referee with his hand rather than crosschecking him.

The NHL disagreed with the arbitrator’s decision, fired the arbitrator, and filed a complaint in Federal Court to vacate the decision. The NHLPA responded by asking the Court to either dismiss the complaint or confirm the decision.

The Court granted the NHLPA’s second request and confirmed the arbitrator’s decision. The Court stated that it was bound by a very limited standard of review. It must confirm the arbitrator’s decision as long as the arbitrator was “arguably acting within the scope of his authority” and the award “draws its essence from the CBA.” Simply put, the Court must defer to the arbitrator unless no reasonable argument exists in the CBA to support his decision. Mere disagreement—that is, if the Court might have decided the issue another way—is not enough.

Bound to this standard, the Court found that the CBA was internally inconsistent, and the arbitrator worked within the CBA to rectify the contradictions. The arbitrator’s decision was reasonably based on the terms in the CBA, and that was enough for the Court.

Snapshots: Avalanche, Stone, Foligno, Namestnikov

March 13, 2017 at 6:27 pm CDT | by Mike Furlano Leave a Comment

News and notes from around the NHL this evening:

  • The Colorado Avalanche announced that they’ve recalled defenseman Anton Lindholm from the AHL San Antonio Rampage. The Swedish prospect is playing in his first season outside of Sweden and has 2G and 10A in  59 games. Lindholm was drafted 144th overall in 2014, and with the Avalanche firmly out of a playoff spot, now is the time to see what the team’s prospects have to offer at the NHL level.
  • The Calgary Flames received some good news regarding defenseman Michael Stone. Sportsnet Fan 960’s Pat Steinberg reports that Flames GM Brad Treliving told reporters that Stone’s upper-body injury is not going to be as long as it could’ve have been. Stone has excelled in Calgary since being traded from the Arizona Coyotes. He has 1G and 3A in 8 games, outpacing his 1G and 8A through 45 games in Arizona.
  • Columbus Blue Jackets forward and captain Nick Foligno will not play tonight against the Philadelphia Flyers, reports Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch. Foligno is ill and did not practice this morning either. Foligno has 24G and 23A in 65 games this season for the surprising Blue Jackets, who sit just three points out of first place in the NHL. Foligno is not the only prominent Blue Jacket missing tonights game. Defenseman Ryan Murray broke his hand and will miss 4-6 weeks.
  • The Tampa Bay Lightning will have forward Vladislav Namestnikov back in the lineup tonight against the New York Rangers, reports Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times. Namestnikov hurt his leg Thursday against the Minnesota Wild, but escaped serious injury. The Russian first round draft pick has 9G and 15A in 62 games for the Lightning, and will help close the gap on a playoff berth. The team is only three points out of the second wild card slot in the East.

Evening Snapshots: Spooner, Gibson, Enroth

March 12, 2017 at 8:18 pm CDT | by Mike Furlano Leave a Comment

News and notes from around the NHL this evening:

  • The Boston Bruins announced that forward Ryan Spooner will not play tomorrow night against the Vancouver Canucks. Spooner suffered a concussion last Monday in a tilt with the Ottawa Senators. Bruins coach Bruce Cassidy stated that Spooner is progressing well through the concussion protocol. Spooner has 11G and 23A in 65 games for the Bruins, and the Bruins hope to get his offense back as soon as possible. The team holds down the third playoff spot in the Atlantic Division by only two points, and a bad stretch could have the Bruins on the outside looking in.
  • The Anaheim Ducks announced that goaltender John Gibson will not play tonight against the Washington Capitals. Gibson is day-to-day with a lower body injury. Gibson missed time with a lower body injury before returning on Friday against the St. Louis Blues, but heappears to have aggravated something and will take more time off. So far this season Gibson has earned a  .921 SV% and a 2.28 GAA in 49 games. Expect back up goaltender Jonathan Bernier to make the start tonight.
  • To deal with Gibson’s injury, the Anaheim Ducks have recalled goaltender Jhonas Enroth from the San Diego Gulls, the team announced this evening. Enroth was sent down on March 10th to make room for Gibson, but Gibson’s injury necessitated that Enroth return and back up goaltender Jonathan Bernier. With only 13 games remaining after tonight’s match, the Ducks are comfortably in a playoff spot, but are on the brink of becoming a wild card team and playing a much tougher opponent.
