Ducks Recall Robert Hagg

The Ducks have made a roster move in advance of tomorrow’s game against Vegas.  They’ve announced that they have recalled defenseman Robert Hagg from AHL San Diego.

Hagg is in his first season with Anaheim after signing a one-year, $775K one-way deal with them in the first week of free agency.  However, despite a decent showing in the preseason where he had a goal and an assist in just two appearances, the Ducks waived him late in training camp.  He cleared and was assigned to the Gulls where he has played in three games, recording a single assist.  It’s his first AHL action since back in the 2016-17 campaign when he was with Philadelphia,

The 28-year-old battled injuries last season, resulting in him getting into just 38 games with Detroit where he had seven points and 111 hits.  For his career, Hagg has 16 goals, 47 assists, and 985 hits in 338 contests over parts of seven seasons.

On the surface, it appears that this is merely a depth-related promotion.  Anaheim recently loaned Tristan Luneau to San Diego on a conditioning stint, leaving them with just six healthy blueliners on their roster.  Luneau’s stint can last for up to two weeks so it appears that Hagg will serve as injury insurance in the youngster’s absence.

Greg Cronin Fined $25K By The NHL

  • In a controversial disallowed goal during the Anaheim Ducks’ recent game against the Pittsburgh Penguins, the new head coach of the Ducks, Greg Cronin, became very animated on the bench expressing his displeasure with the call by the referee. After the play was reviewed, the call on the ice stood, causing Cronin to use extremely colorful language toward the referee, earning him an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty as well as an ejection. Today, the NHL announced they have fined Cronin a total of $25K for the incident.

Anaheim Ducks Assign Alex Stalock, Tristan Luneau To AHL

The Anaheim Ducks have trimmed their roster by two, sending goaltender Alex Stalock and defenseman Tristan Luneau to the AHL’s San Diego Gulls. Luneau, 19, is not yet eligible for full-time assignment to the AHL and will play his first games for the Gulls on a conditioning stint.

Anaheim doesn’t suit up again until Sunday against the Golden Knights, so these moves could just be to get Stalock and Luneau some playing time in the minors over the next few days. The Ducks brought Stalock up to the NHL roster under emergency conditions on Wednesday after starter John Gibson exited Monday’s game against the Pittsburgh Penguins with an upper-body injury. Listed as day-to-day, Gibson remains on the active roster but did not dress for Wednesday’s overtime win over the Arizona Coyotes.

Stalock, 36, signed a one-year deal worth $800K in the offseason to provide depth and competition for the backup role behind Gibson with youngster Lukáš Dostál. Dostál won the job in camp, however, and he hasn’t looked back. The 23-year-old was named the NHL’s Rookie of the Month for October and has posted a 5-1-0 record in six appearances, boasting an exemplary .920 SV%, although he’s still looking for his first NHL shutout.

The veteran Stalock has battled back from multiple severe injuries in the past few years, including complications from long COVID and a severe concussion sustained last season while playing with the Chicago Blackhawks. Selected by the San Jose Sharks in the fourth round of the 2005 NHL Draft, Stalock has a 2.74 GAA, .919 SV% and a 1-2-0 record in three appearances with the Gulls this season.

Luneau, who projects as a fixture on the Ducks’ power play for years to come, made the team out of camp after signing his entry-level contract in September. After recording 83 points in 65 games with the QMJHL’s Gatineau Olympiques last season, he’s been a healthy scratch in eight of ten games with the Ducks and hasn’t played since October 21 against Arizona. He can head to San Diego for a maximum of two weeks and five games, after which he must be recalled to the Ducks or returned to Gatineau.

Evening Notes: Killorn, Mayfield, Puljujarvi

Derek Lee of The Sporting Tribune is reporting that Anaheim Ducks forward Alex Killorn was no longer in a non-contact jersey at Ducks practice today after wearing one yesterday. The 34-year-old has yet to suit up for Anaheim after signing an eyebrow-raising four-year $25MM contract in the offseason as a free agent. Killorn spent the first 11 seasons of his career with the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Killorn suffered a fractured finger in the preseason in a game against the San Jose Sharks that has delayed his debut in Anaheim by a little over a month. The Ducks have high hopes for Killorn who is coming off a career year last season in which he scored 27 goals and 37 assists in 82 games.

In other evening notes:

  • Ethan Sears of New York Post Sports is reporting that New York Islanders defenseman Scott Mayfield has returned to action tonight against the Washington Capitals. The 31-year-old suffered a lower-body injury on opening night and was deemed a game-time decision earlier today. The Islanders have been without Mayfield for seven games and have missed his physical and defensive presence in their lineup. Islanders seventh defenseman Samuel Bolduc has been filling in for Mayfield but has been averaging a team-low 8:30 of ice time per game.
  • TSN’s Chris Johnston of Insider Trading is reporting that former Edmonton Oilers forward Jesse Puljujarvi is eyeing an NHL return in early to mid-December after undergoing hip surgery in the offseason. Puljujarvi became an unrestricted free agent after he was non-tendered a qualifying offer by the Carolina Hurricanes that followed a trade there late last season by the Oilers. The 25-year-old was once a highly touted prospect after being selected fourth overall but has never lived up to those lofty expectations managing just 51 goals and 63 assists in 334 NHL games.

Ducks Recall Stalock As Gibson Is Day-To-Day With Injury

The Anaheim Ducks have recalled goaltender Alex Stalock on an emergency basis, as goaltender John Gibson is out day-to-day with injury. Rookie goaltender Lukáš Dostál will fill in as the team’s starter in Gibson’s absence.

Dostal takes on the starter role only hours after being named the NHL’s ’Rookie of the Month’ for his October performance. The 23-year-old goaltender appeared in five games in October, setting a 4-1-0 record and saving 152 of the 165 shots that he faced, good for a .921 save percentage; a stat that ranks 10th in the NHL among goalies with five or more games played. He was just two games shy of losing his rookie eligibility, playing in 23 NHL games prior to this season. He recorded a dismal 5-12-3 record in those games, although his .902 save percentage spoke to the potential for strong future showings. That potential is certainly shining through now, with Dostal poised for a great opportunity as long as Gibson remains out.

Interim backup Alex Stalock is continuing his journeyman career with a call-up to the Anaheim Ducks – now his fourth NHL team. With three games for the San Diego Gulls this season, Stalock has now played for seven different AHL clubs as well – although two of those teams were different affiliates of the San Jose Sharks. Either way, it’s been a winding career for the 36-year-old Stalock, who was originally picked 112th overall in the 2005 NHL Draft. He will become the 11th player from that draft class to play this season, if he finds his way into Anaheim’s crease.

John Gibson Leaves Game With Upper Body Injury

Eric Stephens of The Athletic is reporting that Anaheim Ducks goaltender John Gibson left tonight’s game against the Pittsburgh Penguins and will not return. The 30-year-old netminder did not come out to the ice for the start of the second period after suffering what the team called an upper-body injury.

Gibson appeared to tweak either his back or something on his side when he made an unbelievable save on Sidney Crosby that could be a save-of-the-year candidate. Unfortunately for the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania native, the save might have come at a cost as he was in some discomfort after getting twisted around making the blind stick save.

Lukas Dostal came out to start the second period for the Ducks in Gibson’s absence. The 23-year-old netminder has been good thus far for Anaheim posting a 3-1 record with a .915 save percentage in four games thus far this season. It’s early in the year, but Dostal has been the better of the two goalies in the early stages as Gibson is 1-3 with a .905 save percentage.

Gibson was once thought to be among the upper echelon of goaltenders in the NHL, however, over the last five seasons his play has dropped off dramatically as he has found his name in trade rumor mills on a pretty regular basis. Last season, Gibson went 14-31-8 with a .899 save percentage and 3.99 goals against average.

The Ducks were picked by many to be at the bottom of the standings at the end of the season, however, they have surprised some people with a 4-4 start to the season.

Anaheim Ducks Recall Robert Hagg

The Anaheim Ducks have announced a roster move today ahead of tomorrow night’s matchup against the Boston Bruins. The Ducks announced that defenseman Robert Hagg has been recalled from their AHL affiliate in San Diego and will join the team in Boston.  The move comes just three weeks after the team exposed Hagg to waivers before assigning him to the AHL.

Hagg was the Philadelphia Flyers 2013 second-round pick and is a veteran of 338 NHL games split over a seven-year career. The 28-year-old spent last season with the Detroit Red Wings where he posted two goals and five assists in 38 games. Hagg has been an NHL regular since 2016-17 when he broke into the league with the Flyers and has 16 career goals and 47 assists.

The native of Uppsala, Sweden signed a one-year/one-way contract with the Ducks on July 4th and has dressed in three AHL games this season, posting a single assist. He has bounced around the league the last few seasons between the Red Wings last year and the Florida Panthers and Buffalo Sabres in 2021-22. Teams have always been enticed by Hagg’s size and his willingness to block shots, but his limited puck skills have always kept him from catching on with a team long-term.

In 2018-19, Hagg looked as though he was emerging as a part of the Flyers top-6 defensemen dressing in 82 games and putting up 20 points. However, during the pandemic-shortened 2020-21 season Hagg’s play regressed leading to him being part of the Flyers and Sabres trade that saw fellow defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen go the other way.

Leo Carlsson Out Against Blue Jackets

When the Anaheim Ducks made a somewhat unexpected choice at the 2023 NHL draft to select Swedish pivot Leo Carlsson over Hobey Baker winner Adam Fantilli, many had circled today as a date to watch on the NHL calendar. That’s because Carlsson’s Ducks are set to play Fantilli’s Blue Jackets tonight, and with both players likely to be in the NHL today’s contest was viewed to be the first chance to watch the two players go head-to-head.

Fans will have to wait to get that chance, though, as Ducks team reporter Aly Lozoff confirms that Carlsson will not dress for today’s game. Carlsson began this season dealing with an injury and the Ducks have reportedly been attempting to “ease” Carlsson into the rigors of the NHL schedule. That means he’ll sit tonight, and as a result, fans will have to wait until the Blue Jackets travel to Orange County in February to get the chance to see Carlsson and Fantilli face off.

Ducks Expected To Place Jamie Drysdale On IR

Although no official announcement has come from the team, CapFriendly indicates that the Anaheim Ducks have placed defenseman Jamie Drysdale on injured reserve retroactively to October 15th. Drysdale has not played in the following three games for the organization, as he has put up two assists while carrying a +2 rating.

As expected, the Ducks are not getting off to a hot start to this season, carrying a 1-4-0 record into tonight’s game against the Columbus Blue Jackets. However, there is still plenty to be excited about in Orange County, as the team was able to sign both Drysdale and Trevor Zegras to separate three-year contracts shortly before the start of the season, as well as seeing the second-overall selection of the 2023 NHL Draft, Leo Carlsson, score a goal in his first ever professional game.

Nevertheless, even without indicating any effort to compete for the playoffs this season, Drysdale’s presence will be missed on the blue line. Thin on depth throughout the defensive core at the top level of the organization, there is an argument to be made that Drysdale represents the best of what the Ducks have to offer on defense.

Jamie Drysdale Day-To-Day With Injury, Luneau To Play

NJ.com’s Ryan Novozinsky has shared that Erik Haula and Tomas Nosek will likely both miss New Jersey’s Friday night game with an upper-body and lower-body injury respectively. Haula was the only one of the two to play in the team’s most recent game, being named the game’s third star after a two-point performance. Head coach Lindy Ruff told Novozinsky that the duo will likely not travel with the team on their upcoming two-game road trip.

The absence of Haula and Nosek leaves a dent in New Jersey’s bottom six that’s expected to be filled by Curtis Lazar and Nathan Bastian. Bastian has been with the Devils for five of his six NHL seasons, briefly joining the Seattle Kraken for 12 games of the 2021-22 season before the Devils claimed him off waivers partway through the year. Lazar is a much more recent addition, joining the Devils via trade ahead of the 2022-23 trade deadline. He’s only played six games with the Devils between last season and this season and has yet to record a point. New Jersey could also turn towards summer signee Chris Tierney to fill an empty role. Tierney has yet to make his debut with the Devils.
