Snapshots: Weekes, Ontario, Vegas

February 3, 2021 at 1:24 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 2 Comments

There’s another interesting name to throw on the pile of candidates for the Pittsburgh Penguins’ GM job, as Frank Seravalli of TSN reports that NHL Network analyst Kevin Weekes will be among the first to interview for the role. The former NHL goaltender has no experience in the front office but did play more than a decade in the league and has been a strong broadcaster since his retirement.

Patrik Allvin, the interim GM, will also be among the first few interviews according to Seravalli. Just yesterday it was reported that both Chris Drury and John Ferguson Jr. had received permission from their respective teams to speak with the Penguins, while many other candidates have been mentioned since Jim Rutherford’s unexpected resignation.

  • The AHL released a schedule for the season that is set to start on Friday, but no games were listed for the North Division, made up of the Canadian-based teams. That’s because of some resistance from the Ontario provincial government, but Chris Johnston of Sportsnet reports that there has been some progress between the two sides. The Toronto Marlies and Belleville Senators, the two teams based in Ontario, will likely have to start the season on a road trip to make things work according to Johnston, but could be “up and running in the next week or two.”
  • The Vegas Golden Knights are set to resume their schedule on Friday against the Los Angeles Kings after positive COVID tests shut things down, and were on the ice today preparing. Among those absent from practice were defenseman Alex Pietrangelo and head coach Pete DeBoer, along with assistants Ryan Craig and Ryan McGill. There is still a little bit of time before the game for Pietrangelo to come off the COVID Protocol Related Absences list, but for now, it appears as though they will prepare without their big free agent acquisition. Kaedan Korczak, one of the team’s top defensive prospects, was recalled to the taxi squad today.

Taxi Squad Shuffle: 02/03/21

February 3, 2021 at 11:01 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

There has been plenty of roster movement between NHL teams and the taxi squad on a daily basis this season. Although some major names may be highlighted in separate articles, this is where you’ll find the majority of that shuffle news each day.

North Division

  • The Calgary Flames have once again flipped Buddy Robinson and Derek Ryan with the former being recalled and the latter being sent to the taxi squad, per CapFriendly.  This is a move that has happened several times already this season and will likely be flipped again on Thursday.  If that happens and Ryan plays, he’ll need to go through waivers again before he can be returned.  Connor Mackey was also sent back to the taxi squad.
  • The Montreal Canadiens have reversed yesterday’s goaltending swap, returning Cayden Primeau to Laval of the AHL while recalling Charlie Lindgren to the taxi squad, per CapFriendly.  Prior to Tuesday, Lindgren had been on Montreal’s taxi squad since clearing waivers back in training camp.

West Division

  • The Vegas Golden Knights have added Kaedan Korczak to the taxi squad, after Brayden McNabb was ruled out with an injury and placed on long-term injured reserve recently. Korczak, 20, won a silver medal with the Canadian World Junior team earlier this year and was a second-round pick of the Golden Knights in 2019.
  • The Los Angeles Kings have reassigned Mark Alt, Austin Strand, and Arthur Kaliyev back to the taxi squad, moving Boko Imama and Sean Durzi down to the AHL once again. This is just an off-day money-saving move since the Kings don’t play again until Friday night. Kaliyev, 19, became one of the youngest goal scorers in Kings’ history when he scored in his NHL debut last night.
  • The St. Louis Blues have assigned Jacob de la Rose to the taxi squad, CapFriendly reports.  He was recalled last week but didn’t see any game action.  The center suited up in 34 games for the Blues last season.

Central Division

  • The Chicago Blackhawks have called up Madison Bowey to the taxi squad, sending Michal Teply and Wyatt Kalynuk back to the minor leagues in the process. Bowey signed a two-year contract earlier this season but was sent to the AHL after clearing waivers. The 25-year-old defenseman will now be one step closer to getting back into the NHL, where he played 53 games last season.  CapFriendly adds that Reese Johnson was also sent to the taxi squad.
  • The Columbus Blue Jackets have assigned Liam Foudy to the taxi squad, moving Nathan Gerbe down to the AHL in the process. Columbus got Patrik Laine into the lineup last night where he played nearly 21 minutes but unfortunately couldn’t register a point in his Blue Jackets debut.
  • The Detroit Red Wings are getting back several players from the COVID Protocol list, announcing today that Mathias Brome has been moved to the taxi squad to help make room for Adam Erne, Robby Fabbri, Sam Gagner, and Jonathon Merrill, who have all been removed from the CPRA.
  • The Florida Panthers have assigned Owen Tippett to the taxi squad after the young forward played just eight minutes in the team’s last game. Tippett hasn’t recorded a single point so far this season and actually has just one goal in his 12 NHL games. Selected 10th overall in 2017, he still hasn’t quite been able to make his mark at the highest level.
  • Tanner Kero is on his way back to the taxi squad for the Dallas Stars, a move that he should be familiar with by this point. Kero has been involved in seven transactions since clearing waivers on January 12, popping up and down from the taxi squad regularly for the Stars.
  • The Carolina Hurricanes have returned Morgan Geekie and Alex Nedeljkovic to the taxi squad, per CapFriendly.  Geekie played nearly ten minutes last night while on emergency recall while Nedeljkovic is likely to be on the NHL roster with more regularity over the next few weeks with Petr Mrazek undergoing surgery today.
  • After being up on emergency loans, the Colorado Avalanche returned Kiefer Sherwood, Sheldon Dries, and Jacob MacDonald to the taxi squad, per CapFriendly.  In a corresponding move, Shane Bowers was transferred from the taxi squad to the AHL’s Colorado Eagles.

East Division

  • With Kaapo Kakko back at practice after a short stint on the COVID Protocol list, the New York Rangers have sent Jonny Brodzinski back to the AHL. Brodzinski played earlier this week for the Rangers, recording a shot and a minor penalty in under eight minutes of ice time. Kakko only spent two days on the list, meaning he never did test positive for the coronavirus.
  • The Philadelphia Flyers have recalled Connor Bunnaman from their taxi squad and also re-assigned Samuel Morin to AHL Lehigh Valley from their taxi squad.  This is Bunnaman’s fifth recall of the young season while playing in six games for the Flyers while Morin, another player who has been shuffled back and forth, has suited up just once and should get more consistent playing time with the Phantoms.
  • The Boston Bruins have added Anton Blidh from the taxi squad and he will make his season debut tonight, reports Fluto Shinzawa of The Athletic.  The 25-year-old has played in each of the last four seasons and has 28 career NHL games under his belt.
  • A day after being sent to the taxi squad, the Buffalo Sabres have moved Arttu Ruotsalainen to Rochester of the AHL, per CapFriendly.  He’s in the second year of his entry-level deal but has yet to play in North America.  Prior to training camp, he was off to a strong start in Finland, collecting 16 goals and 11 assists in just 19 games with Ilves.

Taxi Squad Shuffle: 02/02/21

February 2, 2021 at 11:55 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

There has been plenty of roster movement between NHL teams and the taxi squad on a daily basis this season. Although some major names may be highlighted in separate articles, this is where you’ll find the majority of that shuffle news each day.

North Division

  • The Toronto Maple Leafs added Nic Petan to their practice group today, and head coach Sheldon Keefe told reporters that he would be in the mix for the fourth line rotation moving forward. Petan, 25, has played in just 21 NHL games since arriving in Toronto during the 2018-19 season but was a dominant offensive piece in the minor leagues last year.
  • The Edmonton Oilers have sent Stuart Skinner back to the taxi squad, while recalling Evan Bouchard who is expected to make his season debut. The Oilers look like they will go with seven defensemen tonight, making James Neal a healthy scratch despite his recent two-goal game. Alex Chiasson, who cleared waivers, has not been moved to the taxi squad and is expected to play.

West Division

  • The Los Angeles Kings have recalled Lias Andersson, Arthur Kaliyev, Mark Alt, and Austin Strand from the taxi squad while completing several other transactions. Sean Walker was placed on injured reserve retroactive to January 16, Alex Turcotte was activated and assigned to the AHL and Martin Frk was activated off injured reserve. Boko Imama and Sean Durzi were recalled from the AHL to the taxi squad.

Central Division

  • The Columbus Blue Jackets have activated Patrik Laine and expect him to debut tonight for the team. To make room, Kevin Stenlund has been moved to injured reserve retroactive to his last appearance. The team has also swapped Matiss Kivlenieks and Cam Johnson again between the AHL and taxi squad, a move that seems like it’s going to be repeated throughout the season.
  • Just like every other day, the Nashville Predators have made a swap, sending Mathieu Olivier and Eeli Tolvanen back to the taxi squad. Tolvanen played in his first game since 2018 last night and scored, though it came in a losing effort. The 21-year-old now has two goals and three points in eight career games at the NHL level.
  • Tanner Kero and Joel L’Esperance have been recalled by the Dallas Stars, while Ty Dellandrea heads back to the taxi squad in their place. The Stars take on the Blue Jackets tonight in just their seventh game of the season after missing the first chunk due to COVID postponements.

East Division

  • The Pittsburgh Penguins had some new faces on the ice today as Mike Matheson and Zach Aston-Reese returned, which could explain why Will Reilly was sent to the AHL and both Drew O’Connor and Kevin Czuczman were assigned to the taxi squad. The Penguins don’t play again until Saturday thanks to the Devils COVID outbreak, meaning they have a few days to get a little healthier before resuming their season.

AHL, PHPA Ratify CBA Amendments

February 1, 2021 at 12:39 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The AHL and Professional Hockey Players’ Association, union for minor league players, have announced the ratification of modified terms of the CBA for the 2020-21 season. The agreement allows the upcoming AHL season to move forward. League president Scott Howson released a statement:

We are very pleased that the players and the member clubs of the AHL have come together to find a solution for playing the 2020-21 season during these difficult times. We remain committed to the health and safety of our players, coaches, officials and fans, as well as everyone else who will be contributing to our league this season.

Very basically, this agreement will make an AHL season possible, but it doesn’t come without some controversy. Sean Shapiro of The Athletic reported last week that many AHL players felt very unhappy with the options in front of them and eventually agreed to protect the overall financial health of union members. If it was turned down and a season was not held, it would be the players on AHL-only deals that would take the brunt of the losses. Some players told Shapiro that they believed the AHL delay was a negotiating tactic to get better terms.

Still, for hockey fans at least, this is good news. The AHL is set to kick off their season on February 5, meaning prospects and veterans alike will get back on the ice and continue their careers. The first game of the season will be between the Bridgeport Sound Tigers and Providence Bruins, scheduled for 1pm EST on Friday afternoon. The league has still not announced a schedule for the North Division as they continue to work with provincial health officials in Canada.

Taxi Squad Shuffle: 02/01/21

February 1, 2021 at 9:39 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

There has been plenty of roster movement between NHL teams and the taxi squad on a daily basis this season. Although some major names may be highlighted in separate articles, this is where you’ll find the majority of that shuffle news each day.

North Division

  • The Calgary Flames have recalled Connor Mackey and Derek Ryan from the taxi squad, moving Buddy Robinson down in their place. The Flames have been moving Ryan off the active roster whenever they don’t have a game to play in order to save some cap and delay his waiver clock. It won’t be possible forever (once Ryan plays ten games, he’ll need waivers again to go down) but for now he’s on a constant shuffle back and forth.

West Division

  • The Los Angeles Kings have recalled Jacob Ingham from the AHL and assigned him to the taxi squad while sending Matt Villalta back down in his place. This swap could be frequent throughout the season to ensure both goaltenders get some minor league game action while still providing a third goaltender for the NHL club.
  • The Arizona Coyotes have finally added Ilya Lyubushkin to the active roster now that his work visa situation has been resolved. Lyubushkin played in 51 games for the Coyotes last season and signed a new one-year, $1MM deal in October. The 26-year-old defenseman has just eight points in his NHL career and is still looking for that elusive first goal.

Central Division

  • With players starting to come off the COVID Protocol list, the Carolina Hurricanes have sent Drew Shore, Sheldon Rempal, and Joey Keane back to the Chicago Wolves. Only Jesper Fast remained when the list came out yesterday, meaning the Hurricanes should have nearly a full complement of players at their disposal for tomorrow’s game.
  • The Dallas Stars have moved Tanner Kero to the taxi squad after the veteran forward played just under nine minutes last night. Kero had been seeing more time than ever before in his career but returned to spot duty in last night’s shootout loss against the Hurricanes. The 28-year-old has two points in five games and could be back up from the taxi squad tomorrow for the Stars next game.
  • The Columbus Blue Jackets have sent Matiss Kivlenieks to the AHL while recalling Cam Johnson to the taxi squad. The goaltending swap is intended to keep each of them fresh and in game form through minor league action while continuing to provide a third option for the NHL.
  • The Detroit Red Wings have made their daily changes, moving Givani Smith, Michael Rasmussen, and Calvin Pickard back to the taxi squad, while sending Chase Pearson, Dennis Cholowski, and Gustav Lindstrom down to the AHL. The Red Wings don’t play again until Wednesday, meaning they can save some cash and cap by moving players on two-way contracts off the active roster.
  • Similarly, the Nashville Predators have recalled Mathieu Olivier and Eeli Tolvanen from the taxi squad, giving them some extra forwards on game day. The Predators play the Lightning tonight and if he gets into the lineup, it would be Tolvanen’s first NHL action since 2018.

East Division

  • The Buffalo Sabres have recalled Jean-Sebastien Dea and C.J. Smith to the taxi squad while sending top prospect Jack Quinn to the AHL. The Rochester Americans start their truncated season later this week and Quinn appears to be in for some professional action while his junior league remains suspended. Quinn, 19, will not start his entry-level contract by playing in the AHL.
  • The New York Rangers have recalled Anthony Bitetto from the taxi squad, presumably to take the spot of Tony DeAngelo who cleared waivers earlier today. In the meantime, however, Jonny Brodzinski has been recalled from the Hartford Wolf Pack of the AHL to fill the empty taxi squad spot. It’s not clear exactly where DeAngelo sits with the team, but for now the 30-year-old Bitetto is expected to make his Rangers debut.
  • The Pittsburgh Penguins, who are dealing with another injury on defense, have recalled Will Reilly from the taxi squad. The 23-year-old defenseman has not played a professional game yet after completing his four-year career at R.P.I. last season. To make room on the roster, Brian Dumoulin has been moved to long-term injured reserve retroactive to January 26.

Minor Transactions: 01/30/21

January 30, 2021 at 2:08 pm CDT | by Zach Leach Leave a Comment

The NHL season is well on its way and the start of the AHL season is right around the corner, not to mention an ongoing ECHL and NCAA season, several leagues in Europe already entering the stretch run, and North American junior leagues starting to work toward a return. Yet, there are still players out there looking for a place to play this season, many of whom are familiar to NHL fans. Keep up with those moves right here over the course of the day:

  • Veteran forward Matt Lorito has found a new AHL home for the coming campaign. Lorito, who has spent the past four years under NHL contracts, has instead inked a one-year minor league deal with the San Diego Gulls, the team announced. Lorito recorded 23 points in 50 games with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers last season, but finished the year with the Toronto Marlies after the Islanders traded him to the Maple Leafs for defenseman Jordan Schmaltz. A veteran of two NHL games with the Detroit Red Wings, Lorito has been a highly productive scorer in the AHL with 215 points in 283 games over six seasons.
  • Victor Hadfield, the grandson of New York Rangers legend Vic Hadfield, will get his first taste of the pro game on a tryout with the AHL’s Manitoba Moose, per the team’s training camp roster. The Barrie Colt, who was selected No. 1 overall in the inaugural OHL U-18 Priority Selection Draft, got off to a slow start to his major junior career, but started to show signs of potential last season with 26 points in 46 games. The Moose want to see for themselves in camp if Hadfield might be a later bloomer who is ready to keep growing in the pros. Hadfield’s grandfather, whose number is retired by the Rangers, played in over 1,000 NHL games for New York and Pittsburgh in the 60’s and 70’s, including a 106-point 1971-72 campaign.
  • After spending last season with the AHL’s Cleveland Monsters, defenseman Anton Karlsson has been back home in Sweden playing for the SHL’s HV71. However, on the eve of a new AHL season, Karlsson and HV71 have agreed to mutually terminate his current contract, the team announced. Coincidence? Keep an eye out for more on Karlsson, who carved out a nice role for himself with Cleveland last year despite battling for ice time with a number of NHL talents on the blue line. At 27, Karlsson may still have NHL ambitions.
  • The AHL’s San Diego Gulls have received some reinforcements from their ECHL affiliate, the Tulsa Oilers. The ECHL transactions register indicates that the Anaheim Ducks, parent club to both, have reassigned forwards Bryce Kindopp and Maxim Golod and goaltender Olle Eriksson Ek to San Diego.

AHL Players Agree To CBA Modifications

January 29, 2021 at 6:20 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose 1 Comment

The Professional Hockey Players Association (PHPA) has agreed to the AHL’s proposal regarding salary modifications for the upcoming season and a CBA extension, reports TSN’s Frank Seravalli (Twitter link).  The agreement still has to be ratified by the Board of Governors but it is a significant hurdle that has been cleared with an eye on their season officially getting underway next week.

Sean Shapiro of The Athletic reports (subscription link) that players on one-way AHL agreements will be guaranteed 40% of their listed salary regardless of how many games are played.  Players on NHL two-way deals will be guaranteed 48% if they’re assigned to the AHL or to the ECHL.  No player will make less than $30K under the terms of the agreement which also carries a one-year CBA extension through the 2024-25 season.

While all professional leagues have certainly took a beating to their finances due to the pandemic, the AHL has been hit even harder as there is no significant television contract to fall back on.  They are an even more gate-driven league and without that revenue stream, they have had to cut down costs accordingly and guaranteed salaries were among those to take a hit.  Some teams have opted to play out of their practice facilities to keep game day costs down.

For most of the divisions, the season will get underway on February 5th with schedules ranging from 24 to 44 games in length.  The Canadian division has not yet been scheduled as Ontario still needs to provide approval for Belleville and Toronto while Calgary’s farm team has now relocated to Calgary with that being made official just yesterday.  Things look a lot different in the NHL this season and the same can certainly be said for the top minor league circuit.

Minor Transactions: 01/29/21

January 29, 2021 at 2:43 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

It’s two weeks into the NHL regular season, but things are still just ramping up in the minor leagues. The AHL is set to open next weekend and teams are starting to reinforce their rosters with some players that might have otherwise signed two-way NHL contracts. As those moves come in, we’ll keep track of all the notable minor transactions right here:

  • The Rochester Americans have signed Remi Elie and Nicholas Welsh to one-year, AHL contracts for the 2020-21 season. Elie, 25, has played in more than 100 NHL games including 72 in the 2017-18 season with the Dallas Stars. He’s has spent the majority of the last two seasons with Rochester, scoring 13 points in 34 games last season. Welsh, just 23, was last seen playing in Slovakia where he failed to register a point in six games. The former QMJHL standout spent two years at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
  • The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins have signed Michael Joly and Dylan MacPherson to professional tryouts, while inking Brett Brochu to an amateur tryout. Brochu is probably the most interesting name of the bunch, given his historic success as the starter for the London Knights of the OHL last season. His 32 wins set the OHL record for most by a 16 or 17-year-old rookie, but Brochu still went undrafted thanks to his diminutive stature. While the OHL continues to wait out the current COVID situation in Ontario, Brochu will get a chance to test his skills against professionals.
  • Mason McTavish, one of the players NHL Central Scouting believes has a chance to be selected in the first round of the 2021 NHL Entry Draft, has officially been loaned to EHC Olten in Switzerland until further notice. The 17-year-old forward scored 29 goals and 42 points in just 57 games last season as a rookie for the Peterborough Petes of the OHL.
  • After playing in 20 games with Geneve Servette in Switzerland, Damien Riat is headed to the AHL to join the Hershey Bears. The Washinton Capitals prospect was a fourth-round pick in 2016 but hasn’t come to North America yet. In those 20 games, Riat had 18 points, his best performance so far in a professional career that actually spans back to the 2015-16 season.

Madison Bowey Signs With Chicago Blackhawks

January 29, 2021 at 11:05 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 4 Comments

Jan 29: Bowey has cleared waivers and was quickly assigned to the minor leagues.

Jan 28: The Chicago Blackhawks have signed free agent Madison Bowey to a two-year contract that will run through the 2021-22 season. This season will be a two-way deal with an NHL salary of $700K, while next is a one-way contract worth $750K. That means he’ll carry a cap hit of $725K for the Blackhawks, who immediately placed him on waivers. Should Bowey clear, he can report directly to the AHL or taxi squad (pending COVID protocol).

Bowey, 25, was not issued a qualifying offer from the Detroit Red Wings in the offseason, making him an unrestricted free agent. He had recently signed a minor league PTO with the San Diego Gulls, but will now have a full NHL contract for this season and next. At the expiry of this deal, Bowey will be a UFA once again.

If you’re wondering why the team signed Bowey for two years, CapFriendly offers up a potential explanation. By playing in one more NHL game, Bowey will meet the minimum exposure requirements for the upcoming expansion draft, something that previously only Connor Murphy did for Chicago. Every team must leave at least one defenseman unprotected who has played a certain number of games over the past two seasons and is under contract for 2021-22. Once he gets into the lineup, Bowey will now fill that requirement, even though it seems very unlikely that Seattle would actually pick him.

In the meantime, the 6’2″ defenseman also gives Chicago some added depth at the position and means that some of their younger options could get playing time in the minor leagues. The team is currently carrying only four players on their taxi squad and could use Bowey in that role all season, moving in and out whenever injuries occur.

Taxi Squad Shuffle: 01/29/21

January 29, 2021 at 10:55 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

It appears as though there will be daily movement this season between the active roster and taxi squad. Although some major names may be highlighted in separate articles, this is where you’ll find the majority of shuffle news each day.

  • The Philadelphia Flyers have moved both Connor Bunnaman and Nate Prosser back to the taxi squad after last night’s game. Prosser, playing in his first game for the Flyers, scored a goal and played a little more than 13 minutes. The Flyers can bank cap space on off days by moving players back to the taxi squad, while also pausing Prosser’s waiver clock in between games.
  • Michal Teply and Anton Lindholm have been recalled from the AHL to the taxi squad for the Chicago Blackhawks, filling the two empty spots they had open. Madison Bowey, who is on waivers today, will likely be sent directly to the AHL if he clears after inking a two-year deal.
  • Riley Barber is no longer on the Detroit Red Wings taxi squad, sent instead to the Grand Rapids Griffins of the AHL. The 26-year-old forward is a star at the minor league level, scoring 37 points in 46 games last season and 31 goals the year before. He hadn’t played in the NHL yet this season.
  • After making his season debut last night, Filip Chlapik has been moved back to the Ottawa Senators taxi squad. The young forward played just over seven minutes and recorded one shot and one hit. The team saves money by moving him to the taxi squad on off days, while also pausing his waiver clock. He could be back up on Sunday for the team’s next game.
  • The Dallas Stars have moved Rhett Gardner and Joel L’Esperance back to the taxi squad, while sending top prospect Thomas Harley to the minor leagues. Harley, 19, was the 18th overall pick in 2019 and actually made his NHL debut in the postseason bubble. He hasn’t played this season but is expected to be a big part of the Stars blue line down the road.
  • The Minnesota Wild have moved Gerald Mayhew back onto the taxi squad, sending Dereck Baribeau and Louis Belpedio down to the AHL in the process. Mayhew, 28, hasn’t played yet this season but is a prolific minor league goal scorer that could potentially get into the lineup should Kevin Fiala end up suspended later today.
  • The New York Rangers have made several roster moves, per CapFriendly.  In cap-saving moves, Kaapo Kakko, K’Andre Miller, and Colin Blackwell were all sent to the taxi squad while Tim Gettinger was moved from the taxi squad to the minors to make room for those assignments.  Those moves will all likely be reversed on Saturday.  Meanwhile, defenseman Matthew Robertson was sent back to Edmonton of the WHL with that division getting cleared to start their junior season.
  • The Anaheim Ducks have assigned Andy Welinski and Vinni Lettieri to the taxi squad with Josh Mahura and Isac Lundestrom heading from the taxi squad to AHL San Diego, according to CapFriendly.  Welinski has suited up in three games with Anaheim this season and Lettieri once; both could be recalled as soon as tomorrow with a game against St. Louis on the schedule.
  • As expected, Montreal has sent Corey Perry back to the taxi squad, per CapFriendly.  The veteran recorded an assist against Calgary on Thursday night but was sent down today for cap purposes.  He’ll be recalled on Saturday for the second game of the set against the Flames.
  • The New York Islanders have recalled Ilya Sorokin from the taxi squad, reports Arthur Staple of The Athletic.  He had been sent down to free up money for Oliver Wahlstrom’s recall for Thursday’s game but the winger has been moved back to the taxi squad as has Kieffer Bellows.
  • Karson Kuhlman and Anton Blidh have been recalled from the taxi squad, per CapFriendly.  With Jack Studnicka not participating in practice, there could be an opening for one of those two to suit up tomorrow.  Meanwhile, Daniel Vladar was re-assigned to the taxi squad with Callum Booth dropping down to the minors in a corresponding move.
  • The Calgary Flames have papered Derek Ryan back to the taxi squad according to Ryan Pike of the Sporting News.  He has been shuffled back and forth all season to free up cap room and he’ll almost certainly be recalled in advance of Saturday’s game against Montreal.
  • The Colorado Avalanche made several moves today according to CapFriendly.  Logan O’Connor was recalled on an emergency basis while Matt Calvert was transferred to injured reserve.  Meanwhile, Sheldon Dries, Shane Bowers, and Jacob MacDonald were all recalled to the taxi squad.
  • Jaret Anderson-Dolan has been moved from the Kings to the taxi squad per a team announcement.  Meanwhile, Lias Andersson was also shuffled back to the taxi squad, per CapFriendly.  It is the fourth time already this season that Andersson has been sent down though on two of the other three occasions, he was recalled the next day.
  • The San Jose Sharks were quite busy today, according to CapFriendly.  Kurtis Gabriel and Josef Korenar were recalled to the taxi squad from the AHL while Noah Gregor went from the Sharks to the taxi squad.  Meanwhile, Jacob Middleton, John Leonard, Fredrik Handemark, Joel Kellman, Alexei Melnichuk, Nicolas Meloche, Brinson Pasichnuk, and Jeffrey Truchon-Viel were all sent to the minors.  The first three were from San Jose and the rest were from the taxi squad.
  • After being recalled under an emergency exception yesterday, Christopher Gibson was returned to the Lightning’s taxi squad, per CapFriendly.  He has been serving as Tampa Bay’s backup goalie while Curtis McElhinney was on the CPRA list.
  • The Toronto Maple Leafs continue their daily cap movement as CapFriendly reports that Jason Spezza and Michael Hutchinson were sent to the taxi squad while Joey Anderson was added to the active roster.  Spezza is on a three-game point streak and is expected to be recalled for Saturday’s game against Edmonton.
