Golden Knights Assign Michael Hutchinson And Daniil Miromanov To AHL

The Golden Knights have made a pair of roster moves in advance of their game tonight against Dallas, announcing (Twitter link) that goaltender Michael Hutchinson and defenseman Daniil Miromanov have been assigned to Henderson of the AHL.

Hutchinson was on recall with both Logan Thompson and Adin Hill dealing with injuries.  While Thompson is on injured reserve, this move suggests that Hill will be available to dress tonight against the Stars.  Hutchinson didn’t play for Vegas on this recall and hasn’t suited up much overall.  He has only made seven appearances with the Silver Knights, posting a 2.74 GAA along with a .897 SV%.  He also played twice for Canada at the Spengler Cup back in December.  With Laurent Brossoit still up covering for Thompson’s injury, however, Hutchinson should be in line for more playing time in the short term.

As for Miromanov, he had been on injured reserve dating back to February 20th so this move indicates that he has been cleared to return.  The 25-year-old had actually been up with the Golden Knights since the end of November but still has seen more action with Henderson than Vegas this season.  In 17 games with the Silver Knights, Miromanov has 13 points while he picked up two goals and four helpers in 14 contests with Vegas.  It’s quite possible that he’ll be back up before long but having been out since the end of December, he needs to get some playing time under his belt first.

Flyers Recall Elliot Desnoyers

The Flyers are giving one of their more promising prospects his first taste of NHL action as the team announced (Twitter link) that they’ve recalled winger Elliot Desnoyers from Lehigh Valley of the AHL.  He will make his NHL debut tonight against New Jersey.

The 21-year-old was a fifth-round pick by Philadelphia back in 2020 (135th overall) but has certainly outperformed his draft stock since then.  He became an impact scorer at the major junior level after being drafted, recording 137 points in 108 games with Halifax of the QMJHL after being selected which helped him earn a spot on Canada’s entry into the World Juniors last summer.

This season, Desnoyers has made the adjustment to playing in the pros and has done quite well, leading the Phantoms in scoring with 19 goals and 17 assists in 48 games.  He’ll now get a chance to see if that scoring touch can translate to the NHL level.

To make room for Desnoyers on the roster, the Flyers placed winger Travis Konecny on injured reserve.  He suffered an upper-body injury on Monday against Calgary and there’s no timeline for how long he’ll be out.

Senators Recall Mark Kastelic, Assign Ridly Greig To AHL

The Senators have made a pair of roster moves in advance of their game tonight against Montreal, announcing (Twitter link) that they have recalled center Mark Kastelic from AHL Belleville while assigning rookie middleman Ridly Greig back to the minors.

Kastelic has spent the majority of the season with Ottawa, getting into 43 games with the big club.  However, he only collected four goals and a single assist in that stretch in a little over nine minutes per night so following the All-Star break, the team elected to have him spend some time with Belleville.  The decision worked as Kastelic picked up a goal and four assist in just seven contests with the Baby Sens.

As for Greig, the 20-year-old held his own in his first taste of NHL action, picking up a goal and three helpers in 11 games while averaging 13:29 per night.  However, for the time being, they’ve decided that Greig should play a bigger role with Belleville for the time being who is trying to get back into the AHL playoff picture.  He has done well at that level this season as a first-year pro, tallying 12 goals and 11 assists in 28 games so far.  It wouldn’t be surprising to see Greig back up with Ottawa at some point in the next few weeks, especially if the Sens wind up seeing some more veterans over the next few days.

West Notes: Krug, Olofsson, Eller

St. Louis Blues defenseman Torey Krug is set to return to the lineup against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday, head coach Craig Berube told reporters today. It ends a brief absence stemming from a lower-body injury.

It’s been a bumpy road for Krug in 2022-23, who’s missed significant portions of the season. This is the fifth separate occasion he’s missed time with a lower-body injury, including a 13-game-long absence through December and January. Krug’s ice time has dipped below 20 minutes this season, and his -28 rating is tied for the worst on the team. He’ll return to his usual spot alongside Justin Faulk.

  • After being sent down yesterday, the Dallas Stars have brought forward Fredrik Olofsson back up from the minors. The 26-year-old has been a frequent call-up as of late, and he’s recorded a goal and three assists in 15 games with Dallas on top of 14 points in 37 games with AHL Texas. Olofsson will draw back into the lineup tomorrow against the Vegas Golden Knights as Luke Glendening and Joel Kiviranta remain sidelined with injuries.
  • The Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun covered the Washington Capitals’ trade deadline plans in his latest piece and listed pending unrestricted free agent center Lars Eller as a potential fit for the Colorado Avalanche. Eller’s offense has taken a step back this season, recording just seven goals and 16 points in 58 games, but he’d be good depth insurance for an Avalanche team that’s thin at center. As Colorado begins to string wins together ahead of the trade deadline, they hope some depth additions combined with healthy stars propel them back into the “contending” category of teams.

 

Florida Panthers Recall Grigori Denisenko, Zac Dalpe

The Florida Panthers have announced the recall of forwards Grigori Denisenko and Zac Dalpe from the AHL’s Charlotte Checkers. The move comes as the Panthers are dealing with injuries to key players, including captain Aleksander Barkov and Sam Bennett, who are both day-to-day with “lingering injury issues,” per head coach Paul Maurice.

Denisenko returns to the NHL after being sent to the minors two days ago. The 21-year-old Russian has appeared in 17 games for the Panthers this season, recording three assists. The Panthers’ first-round pick in the 2018 NHL Draft, Denisenko is known for his speed and skill, but his NHL opportunities have been limited, and he’s still searching for his first NHL goal.

Dalpe, 31, has scored 14 goals in 32 games for the Checkers this season and remains the team’s captain. A veteran of nearly 500 AHL games, Dalpe also has two goals and two assists in 11 appearances with Florida this season. He provides veteran depth in a fourth-line role for the Panthers after they lost Chris Tierney on waivers to the Montreal Canadiens yesterday.

In addition to the recalls, the Panthers will get a boost tonight in perhaps their biggest game of the year against the Buffalo Sabres, as the two teams remain in a tight Eastern Conference Wild Card race. As expected, Maurice confirmed Anthony Duclair will make his season debut after completing his recovery from an Achilles tear. The 27-year-old was a key contributor for the Panthers last season, recording 31 goals, 27 assists, and 58 points in 74 games.

To create the salary cap flexibility needed to activate Duclair and allow for the recalls, it’s expected that Givani Smith was placed on long-term injured reserve. The 24-year-old forward was hit in the face by a shot from teammate Radko Gudas during a game Monday. Smith has appeared in 22 games for the Panthers this season, recording a goal and three assists after he was acquired in a trade with the Detroit Red Wings.

Ottawa Senators Recall Jacob Larsson

The Ottawa Senators recalled defenseman Jacob Larsson from the AHL’s Belleville Senators this morning, per a team tweet. The move continues a busy season on the NHL/AHL wire for Larsson, marking his sixth recall of the 2022-23 season, CapFriendly lists.

Despite the numerous recalls, Larsson has primarily served as an experienced insurance policy for Ottawa. The 25-year-old defender has suited up just seven times for the Senators in 2022-23, and due to his low games played total, he still hasn’t required waivers since clearing them before the season. He will need to clear waivers again if he plays three more games or stays on the NHL roster for 10 more days.

Larsson comes up to the NHL roster to replace the spot vacated by Nikita Zaitsev, who the Senators traded to the Chicago Blackhawks on Wednesday in exchange for future considerations. Drafted 27th overall by the Anaheim Ducks in 2015, Larsson has two goals and eight assists in 37 games for Belleville this season.

It was a short stint in the minors for Larsson, who Ottawa reassigned to Belleville on Monday after appearing in four straight games. A puck-moving defender, Larsson’s NHL play has been passable this season in limited ice time.

At 25, the development track on Larsson is nearing its end. With his waiver-exempt status close to expiration, Larsson could stay on the Senators’ roster as an extra defender for most of the season’s remainder.

St. Louis Blues Reassign Matthew Highmore

Feb 23: A disappointing week later and Highmore has been returned to the AHL. The 26-year-old forward played in two games, both losses, and registered two shots on net.

Feb 18: After moving forwards Ryan O’Reilly and Noel Acciari to Toronto last night, the Blues had a pair of open roster spots to fill.  They’ve now decided who will get them as they announced the recalls of Nikita Alexandrov and Matthew Highmore from AHL Springfield.

Alexandrov is up with St. Louis for the fourth time this season.  He got into 18 games during the first three opportunities, picking up three goals and two assists, pretty good production for someone who was basically limited to exclusive fourth line duty as he’s averaging just 8:46 per game.  The 22-year-old has been much more productive with the Thunderbirds, chipping in with a dozen goals and ten helpers in 28 AHL contests.  He’s in the second season of a three-year, entry-level deal carrying a cap hit of just under $817K.

As for Highmore, he’s in his first season with St. Louis after signing a one-year, two-way deal for the NHL minimum with them last summer.  The 26-year-old hasn’t seen any NHL action in 2022-23 but has 137 appearances over parts of four seasons with Chicago and Vancouver prior to this year.  Highmore has done quite well with Springfield this season, picking up 46 points in 47 games to lead the team in scoring.  He’ll be eligible for unrestricted free agency this summer.

Meanwhile, the Blues have also assigned Adam Gaudette to Springfield.  He was one of the players they picked up in the deal from Toronto and while he’s a bit more experienced than Highmore with 218 career appearances, he’ll stay in the minors for the time being.

Minnesota Wild Recall Dakota Mermis

The Minnesota Wild have recalled defenseman Dakota Mermis from the AHL’s Iowa Wild under emergency conditions, the team announced Wednesday afternoon.

While the Wild appear to have seven healthy defensemen on the roster, The Athletic’s Michael Russo and Joe Smith report that Mermis’ emergency recall comes in anticipation of injury or illness-related absences. Smith notes that an unnamed defender was banged up in last night’s win against the Los Angeles Kings and that Jonas Brodin isn’t in full health. Brodin’s missed time with a lower-body injury on two separate occasions this season.

Mermis, 29, is a versatile defenseman in his third season with the Wild organization. Stationed on taxi squad duty in his first year, 2020-21, he’s since put up eight goals and 40 assists in 105 AHL games with the Iowa Wild, maintaining his status as one of their top defenders.

He made two appearances with the Wild last season, going without a point. If he does appear in a Wild uniform on this call-up, it will be his first appearance of 2022-23.

Florida Panthers Reassign Spencer Knight, Grigori Denisenko

The Florida Panthers announced Wednesday that the team has reassigned goalie Spencer Knight and winger Grigori Denisenko to the AHL’s Charlotte Checkers. Alex Lyon has been recalled to replace Knight’s spot on the roster.

While some eyebrows might raise at Knight getting demoted to the minors, this is purely a cap-related transaction. With winger Anthony Duclair expected to make his season debut Friday as he returns from an Achilles tear, the Panthers need to scratch and claw for every dime of cap space possible in order to take Duclair’s $3MM cap hit off long-term injured reserve.

Reassigning Knight, Denisenko, and Chris Tierney, who Florida waived hours ago, would free up an additional $2.6MM in space to bring their projected cap hit down to roughly $85.1MM. While over the $82.5MM Upper Limit, Patric Hornqvist’s $5.3MM cap hit remains on LTIR to keep them compliant.

While Knight will surely return after the Panthers’ cap situation is resolved, it’s not a guarantee Denisenko receives an immediate call-up. The 15th overall pick in 2018 has again been limited to a fourth-line role and has three assists in 17 games with Florida this year.

Lyon has made six appearances for the Panthers in 2022-23, recording a .887 save percentage and a 3-2-1 record.

Vancouver Canucks Recall Aatu Raty, Guillaume Brisebois

The Vancouver Canucks announced Wednesday that they’ve recalled forward Aatu Raty and defenseman Guillaume Brisebois from their AHL affiliate, the Abbotsford Canucks, also assigning forward Phillip Di Giuseppe to Abbotsford.

This could be Canucks fans’ first look at Raty in the NHL. Raty, still just 20 years old, was the centerpiece of the trade return for captain Bo Horvat when he was dealt to the New York Islanders late last month. After a strong start with the Islanders’ farm team in Bridgeport, though, it’s been a tough adjustment for Raty in Abbotsford. He has just one assist in eight games since joining the AHL Canucks.

It’s likely best not to read too much into Raty’s offensive struggles post-trade. A mid-season, coast-to-coast move across country borders would be understandably taxing on the young Finn. He’ll now get his second chance in the NHL this season after recording two goals in 12 games with the Islanders before the trade.

Raty and Brisebois will join the Canucks in St. Louis as they wrap up a road swing through the Central Division. Brisebois, a 25-year-old defenseman, has posted a goal and five assists in 36 games with Abbotsford this season. He saw time up with Vancouver in late October 2022, recording his first NHL point in a brief three-game stint.

Di Giuseppe, who signed a one-year, two-way contract to return to the Canucks last July, has recorded two goals and an assist in nine games with Vancouver this season. The 29-year-old will look to continue his strong offensive pace in Abbotsford, where he’s combined for 25 goals and 41 assists in 75 games since 2021.
