Russia, Belarus Remain Expelled From 2025-26 IIHF Competition, Olympic Participation Undecided

February 4, 2025 at 9:39 am CDT | by Josh Erickson 18 Comments

The IIHF announced Tuesday that the Russian and Belarusian national teams will remain barred from competition for at least another year. The International Olympic Committee still has to decide whether to include the former in the 2026 Winter Olympics.

However, that means the clubs won’t be able to field squads for the 2026 World Championship or the 2026 World Juniors, among other competitions. This marks the fourth straight competition season without the two countries. “As the current security conditions do not allow the necessary requirements for the organization of tournaments guaranteeing the safety of all, the IIHF must maintain the current status quo until further notice,” the international governing body said in a statement.

The IIHF initially suspended all Russian and Belarusian national teams and clubs in February 2022 following the former country’s illegal invasion of Ukraine with Belarusian support. By May 2026, they will determine whether it’s “safe to reincorporate” the two countries into international play for the 2026-27 season.

Belarus was already disqualified from next year’s Olympics because it was barred from participating in the required qualification tournament. Russia, whose world ranking is high enough that it doesn’t need a qualification tournament to get in, could still field a team for the tournament if the IOC allows it. No Russian or Belarusian teams were allowed to participate in any sport at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. Still, some individuals from both countries participated under an Individual Neutral Athletes banner.

“One of the IIHF’s arguments for not permitting Russia to compete in its tournaments is the issue of safety,” ex-NHLer and Russian Hockey Federation representative Pavel Bure told Steven Ellis of Daily Faceoff. “In our opinion, this argument does not hold enough strength. More than 50 Russians play in the NHL. Russian swimmers, chess players and representatives of other sports are participating in international competitions without any incidents being recorded. One of our suggestions was to finance additional security for Russia, in order to allow fans across the planet to watch one of the world’s best teams in action again.“

Ban them forever. Although I suspect traitor Trump will attempt to get involved to help his patron saint Putin.

Without question both countries should be banned from the Olympics. Russia specifically should have a lifetime ban.

Following the logic the IIHF is using we never would’ve had the 1980 Miracle on Ice because the USSR would’ve been banned. This decision is dumb.

So we shouldn’t sanction the folks who launched an unprovoked bloody invasion against a sovereign nation & caused over a million casualties because the USA won a hockey game against them 45 years ago?

If invading a country and causing deaths are your parameters, many countries, including the USA, would be banned or sanctioned.

In 1936 when we wanted to prove Hitler wrong we showed up to the Berlin Olympics and beat him. Jesse Owens winning his race did more and accomplished more than any Olympic ban would. It really says something you can’t comprehend that.

Wasn’t unprovoked. The genesis of the invasion goes back to 1991, the breakup of the Soviet Union, and a promise that NATO would never make moves closer to the Russian border. The promise was broken multiple times over the ensuing decades and here we are. Simple history that is out there for anyone who is willing to learn with an open mind.

Actually the genesis of the invasion goes back to the 2014 coup in Kiev engineered and financed by the Deep State. The coup deposed a democratically elected president. The Deep State (specifically Nuland) then installed a rusophobic regime there.

Re: the Olympics? That’s far more than just hockey – the IOC’s decision will affect RUS/BLR’s participation in all events. Not under the IIHF’s jurisdiction or any hockey-specific body.

And yet, national anthems get played in arenas (and athletes who don’t kowtow to that do so at their peril), wars have been triggered through sporting events, and jingoism has been a part of organized sport since organized sport was created.

Hypocritical garbage and thinly-veiled but nonetheless sanctioned Russophobia.

Those of us with pulses know exactly what this is– and leadership from other countries will stay silent because no Russia internationally improves their odds. Any IIHF tournament until Russia competes again is forever marked with an asterisk,

Most people seem to think something akin to, “Putin is an evil person who doesn’t listen to anyone and harms all political opponents, so if we limit opportunities to people born in the same country as him, maybe he will suddenly start listening to them and change his evil ways” while also insisting that every Russian should ignore his apparent dislike of dissenting opinion and “speak out against Putin”, whatever that means, or just admit they’re fiercely pro-Putin.

It’s actually an insane way to think, like geopolitical situations are good/evil Marvel movie stuff.

Wow, absolutely pathetic. The perceived thoughts and actions of another country should have ZERO bearing on the ability to compete in an athletic event.
