Alex Stalock Likely To Retire

Veteran netminder Alex Stalock is joining the Sharks’ television broadcast crew this upcoming season, the team announced (via Max Miller of The Hockey News). The move likely signals the end of his 15-year professional career.

Stalock, who spent last season in the Ducks organization, was a finalist for the Masterton Trophy in 2023 after working his way back into a regular NHL role with the Blackhawks. The 37-year-old’s career nearly came to an end in 2020 after developing myocarditis after contracting COVID-19, causing him to spend all of the 2020-21 campaign on long-term injured reserve. He returned the following season in a depth/minor-league role for the Oilers and Sharks before serving as Chicago’s full-time backup in 2022-23.

The San Jose 2005 fourth-round pick signed a one-year, $800K deal with Anaheim last summer to provide competition to prospect Lukáš Dostál for the backup role, a job that the young Czech won handily in camp. Anaheim waived Stalock to begin the season and assigned him to the AHL’s San Diego Gulls, where he spent most of the campaign aside from a handful of emergency call-ups that didn’t result in any NHL action. He recorded a 3.82 GAA, .888 SV%, and a 2-9-2 record in 15 appearances with San Diego.

Stalock played in parts of 11 NHL seasons with the Sharks, Wild, and Blackhawks from 2010 to 2023. In 179 regular-season games, he held a 70-65-20 record with 11 shutouts, a 2.70 GAA, and a .908 SV%.

He had also had an exemplary career as a minor-league starter, posting a 2.70 GAA, .909 SV%, 12 shutouts, and a 110-87-26 record in 232 AHL games across eight seasons – mostly for the Sharks’ affiliates in San Jose and Worcester.

The St. Paul, Minnesota native also had a spectacular collegiate stint, guiding the University of Minnesota-Duluth to a conference championship in his junior season with a 2.13 GAA, .924 SV%, five shutouts, and a 21-13-8 record in 42 appearances. Atlantic Notes: Lysell, Marchand, Laine

The Bruins opened rookie camp today without 2021 first-round pick Fabian Lysell. That’s by design, however, writes Fluto Shinzawa of The Athletic. AHL Providence head coach Ryan Mougenel told Shinzawa that the organization wants Lysell “extremely ready” when veterans report to training camp next Wednesday, signaling Boston’s front office fully intends on Lysell pushing for a spot on the opening night roster.

“He knows how well he can play,” general manager Don Sweeney told Shinzawa. “He knows how much we were proud of the steps he had taken. He had a good camp last year. He’s just still got to continue to work on his complete game. One-on-one skills stuff and some of the stuff he can do to change a game are really good.”

Lysell, 21, is entering his third professional season but has yet to make his NHL debut. He’s been tearing up the farm under Mougenel in Providence, though. He finished fourth on the team in scoring last season with 50 points (15 goals, 35 assists) in 56 games.

The 21st overall pick three years ago remains a high-upside playmaking option for Boston at right-wing – a current position of weakness after Jake DeBrusk left for the Canucks in free agency. He’ll look to push players like Justin Brazeau, Trent Frederic, or Morgan Geekie down the depth chart to start the Bruins’ season opener in a second or third-line role.

  • Brad Marchand reaffirmed to reporters today that he expects to be ready for the Bruins’ season opener on Oct. 8 in Florida after undergoing a trio of offseason surgeries, per Steve Conroy of the Boston Herald. The captain revealed his injuries to the media early last week, disclosing that he underwent elbow, abdominal, and groin procedures over the past few months.
  • Canadiens AHL head coach Pascal Vincent told “The Sick Podcast” with Tony Marinaro that fresh trade acquisition Patrik Laine, whom he oversaw with the Blue Jackets last season, is the “most talented player he’s ever coached” (X link). It’s undoubtedly a bold assessment to make after Laine played just 18 games last season, Vincent’s only campaign at the helm in Columbus, but it gives a bit of optimism that the Habs have the internal tools to help Laine rediscover his 30-to-45-goal potential after an incredibly trying 2023-24 season for the Finnish winger.

Islanders Sign Keith Kinkaid To PTO

The Islanders will have free agent goaltender Keith Kinkaid in training camp on a professional tryout contract, relays Stefen Rosner of The Hockey News.

Kinkaid, 35, is on the UFA market for the fifth time in the past six years. He spent last season on a two-way deal with the Devils, where he spent six of his 10 NHL seasons, but didn’t play in the organization. He was instead loaned out to the AHL’s Chicago Wolves, the minor league’s lone non-affiliated franchise last season, where he had a 3.54 GAA, .880 SV%, and an 8-14-2 record in 24 appearances.

An undrafted free agent signing by New Jersey back in 2011, Kinkaid was a solid backup/1B option during his peak in the Garden State but hasn’t been an NHL regular since being traded to the Blue Jackets at the 2019 trade deadline. He’s made 14 NHL starts and four relief appearances over the past five seasons and didn’t see NHL ice in 2023-24.

The Long Island native will now aid his hometown team in camp. Inexplicably, the veteran of 13 professional seasons and 169 NHL games is on the Isles’ rookie camp roster, where he’ll be providing insurance for 21-year-old prospect Tristan Lennox, who’s reportedly a bit banged up and might not be fully ready to go in the run-up to veterans reporting to training camp next Wednesday.

In those 169 career appearances, Kinkaid has a 70-58-21 record, eight shutouts, a 2.91 GAA, and a .905 SV%. 151 of those games came in a Devils uniform, although he’s also logged time between the pipes for the Canadiens, Rangers, Bruins, and Avalanche in the past few years.

The Islanders already have six goaltenders signed, so the likelihood of Kinkaid landing a contract from this PTO appears slim. The team already acquired a veteran presence for their AHL affiliate, the Bridgeport Islanders, bringing in former Senator Marcus Högberg on a two-year deal. Lennox and a pair of other contracted prospects in their early 20s (Jakub Skarek, Henrik Tikkanen) will also compete for reps in Bridgeport.

Oilers Notes: McDavid, Draisaitl, Kane, Nurse

Oilers star Leon Draisaitl doesn’t think he quite maxed out his value when signing his recent eight-year, $114MM mega-extension with the Oilers, he told Michael Russo of The Athletic.

Draisaitl and teammate Connor McDavid spoke about their recent and pending record-breaking contract extensions at this week’s NHL Player Media Tour in Las Vegas. “I don’t think I necessarily pushed my contract all the way to the limit,” Draisaitl said. “I’d like to state that. But I am very happy with it. I’m content with it. I think, compared to other sports, we probably don’t get paid what we deserve or don’t get paid what they get paid, right? But that’s the sport we’re in.”

McDavid was far more coy in his responses to questions about his next contract – he’s eligible to sign an extension starting July 1, 2025 – stating he’ll do what he feels is best for his family and his chances of winning a Stanley Cup.

But Draisaitl hopes his league-record $14MM AAV is a significant step in the right direction for high-end NHL talent. “I think each one of us, if we can bump it up and get more money into hockey and get the players some higher salaries, I think every player would probably say the same and they’d all be for it,” he told Russo.

  • Evander Kane is projected to be unavailable at the beginning of training camp, according to Tom Gazzola of Edmonton Sports Talk. It’s not a surprise – the team’s Bob Stauffer said last month that Kane was likely to have an undisclosed surgery and start the season on long-term injured reserve, likely related to the sports hernia he played through for a good chunk of last year. But nothing indicates he’s undergone the procedure yet, and Oilers general manager Stan Bowman said on a radio spot last week that they were hoping to have clarity on his return timeline by the end of next weekend.
  • Defenseman Darnell Nurse is also likely out for the beginning of camp, per Gazzola. Gazzola says that the 29-year-old is still nursing a lingering injury he sustained during last season’s playoffs but isn’t likely to miss any regular season action. He’s been on the ice this month for informal skates but doesn’t appear ready for full contact. The Oilers will be looking for a big rebound campaign from the 2013 seventh overall pick, entering the third season of an eight-year, $74MM deal.

Evening Notes: Harley, Iginla, Levshunov

Sean Shapiro of EP Rinkside spoke with Dallas Stars general manager about the team’s negotiations with restricted free-agent defenseman Thomas Harley. Nill showed no sense of urgency to speed along the process, highlighting the fact that training camp doesn’t start for another week so both sides have some time to agree to terms.

The 23-year-old is coming off a career year in which he posted 15 goals and 32 assists in 79 games and is a tough contract to project due to the small sample size in which he’s played at a high level. Prior to last season, the Syracuse, New York native had only played 40 NHL games over parts of two seasons and hadn’t yet established himself as an everyday NHLer. Now, a year later, Harley has broken through and appears to be everything the Stars were hoping for when they drafted him 18th overall in 2019.

In other evening notes:

  • Utah’s 2024 first-round pick Tij Iginla is reportedly being evaluated for a lower-body injury and will be listed as day-to-day going forward (as per Craig Morgan of PHNX Sports). Brogan Houston of Deseret News added specifics on the injury saying that Iginla is dealing with a hip issue that will keep him off the ice for a few days. Iginla is Utah’s first-ever draft pick and appears unlikely to play for the team at the Rookie Faceoff in Los Angeles this weekend.
  • Chicago Blackhawks prospect Artyom Levshunov will miss the prospect tournament this weekend in St. Louis after taking a shot off the foot (as per Mark Lazerus of The Athletic). Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported that the young defenceman is expected to miss a few weeks and is in a walking boot which will be a disappointment for all of those who were looking to catch a glimpse of this year’s second overall pick. Levshunov was facing a battle to try and make the NHL roster, but with the injury, it seems very likely that he won’t begin the season in the NHL.

Metropolitan Notes: Howe, Hurricanes, Kolosov

Pittsburgh Penguins forward prospect Tanner Howe will reportedly not take part in the prospect challenge event that is taking place in Buffalo this weekend due to an injury (as per Seth Rorabaugh of Tribune-Review Sports). Howe is dealing with a facial injury that will keep him out of action in the short term, although he is being called day to day. No specifics of the facial injury were released.

Howe was selected by the Penguins in the second round of this year’s NHL entry draft (46th overall) and was quickly signed to an ELC in early July. The 18-year-old will likely return to Regina to captain the Pats once again this season and shouldn’t face any issues with the injury as it isn’t expected to be a long-term concern.

In other Metropolitan Division notes:

  • The Carolina Hurricanes unveiled development plans today that are expected to create a Raleigh Sports and Entertainment District that will surround Carolina’s home PNC Arena. Pacific Elm Properties and Gale Force Sports and Entertainment formally announced the plans that will see the redevelopment of the 80-acre site into a $1B mixed-use development. The new area will provide dining and entertainment options for fans of both the Hurricanes and nearby North Carolina State basketball as well as sports tailgating and programming, including a large 4300-seat music venue. Work on the project is expected to begin in December 2025.
  • Philadelphia Flyers goaltending prospect Alexei Kolosov will reportedly not be taking part in the team’s 2024 rookie training camp that starts tomorrow (as per Jordan Hall of NBC Sports). The news likely means that the 22-year-old will not be part of the team’s main camp and leaves his status up in the air heading into the 2024-25 season. Reports had leaked earlier in the summer that Kolosov may return to the KHL because of issues adapting to life in North America after he spent a month in the AHL with the Flyers affiliate. Kolosov has signed his entry-level deal with the Flyers and the team expects him to play in North America this season, but his absence from rookie camp further complicates the situation between the player and team.

Penguins Expected To Begin Negotiations With Marcus Pettersson Soon

The Pittsburgh Penguins are expected to turn their attention to extending defenseman Marcus Pettersson once they have finalized a new contract for captain Sidney Crosby (as per David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period). Pettersson is entering the final year of a five-year $20.13MM contract that he originally signed in January 2020. The deal has been an absolute bargain for the Penguins as the 29-year-old has blossomed into Pittsburgh’s most reliable defender.

Pettersson was originally acquired by Pittsburgh from the Anaheim Ducks back in December 2018. The deal was a one-for-one with forward Daniel Sprong heading back to the Ducks. The deal turned out to be fairly one-sided as Sprong has become a journeyman depth scorer while Pettersson has developed into a legitimate top four defenseman.

There is no indication on what kind of a contract Pettersson will be seeking, but given his importance to the Penguins, it’s not hard to picture him getting an extension in the range of $5.5MM to $6MM per season on a long-term pact. The Penguins don’t have another defender like Pettersson and might not be a top destination as the team enters a period of transition where they are attempting to remain competitive while building for the future.

Pettersson is hardly a household name but could certainly command a lucrative long-term deal in free agency, particularly if he can match his production from last season when he posted career highs in goals with four and assists with 26 as well as a +28 rating.

Anaheim Ducks To Sign Three Players To PTOs

Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff reports the Anaheim Ducks are bringing in Mark Pysyk, Boris Katchouk, and Gustav Lindstrom on professional tryout agreements. The Ducks will surely rely more on their youth this season but all three players could serve as reasonable depth if some prospects aren’t adjusting well.

Katchouk is only a few years removed from being a top prospect in his own right with the Tampa Bay Lightning. Katchouk scored 11 goals and 34 points in 29 games with the AHL’s Syracuse Crunch during the 2020-21 season which caused many to believe he may become a middle-six fixture in Tampa for years to come. Unfortunately, his inconsistent ice time led to inconsistent play and the Lightning moved Katchouk to the Chicago Blackhawks in a package for Brandon Hagel.

He played much better with Chicago when more playing time came his way with five goals and 16 points in 58 games during the 2022-23 season but poor play last year ran out the clock with the Blackhawks. The team waived Katchouk near the trade deadline last year and he was eventually claimed by the Ottawa Senators where he scored two goals and four points in 21 games down the stretch.

The Ducks will also bring in a pair of right-handed shot defensemen one of which has spent a decent amount of time with the team already. Anaheim claimed Lindstrom in mid-January of last season away from the Montreal Canadiens and he played rather well for the team down the stretch. He only tallied six assists in 32 games but limited his turnovers and achieved a +12 rating by season’s end placing him second on the team, respectively.

Pysyk is arguably the most interesting addition due to having played in an NHL contest since the 2021-22 season. He signed a one-year deal with the Detroit Red Wings before the 2022-23 NHL season but a tear of his Achilles tendon cost him the year. He went unsigned from his PTO with the Pittsburgh Penguins last year but eventually landed with the team’s AHL affiliate, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. He went scoreless in eight games for the AHL Penguins but eventually found a more consistent home with the AHL’s Calgary Wranglers on a two-way contract with the Calgary Flames.

None of the three players are guaranteed contracts heading into the 2024-25 season but it seems like a prudent move for the Ducks to get a look at some talent for the AHL level. The team is in a position to graduate several prospects this year and could use some more depth in case they can’t find consistency in the early stages of their NHL careers.

Panthers To Sign Matt Luff To PTO

The Florida Panthers have entered the market for PTOs as they try to rebuild their forward depth from a season ago. David Dwork of The Hockey News is reporting that the Panthers have agreed to a professional tryout agreement with forward Matt Luff and he will be with the team next week.

Luff began his career with the Los Angeles Kings organization in 2016 after the team signed him out of the Ontario Hockey League. He was coming off a season with the Hamilton Bulldogs where he scored 25 goals and 49 points in 45 games. One of the major questions at the time of his signing was the limited usage of his larger frame. He was physically one of the bigger players in the OHL at the time but rarely played to his size which made him an interesting addition for a hard-nosed Kings playstyle at the time.

Most of his tenure in the Kings organization had him with the team’s AHL affiliate, the Ontario Reign. He nevertheless managed to skate in 64 games for Los Angeles from 2018-21 where he added 10 goals and 17 points overall. After a one-year stint with the Nashville Predators organization in 2021-22 Luff eventually signed on with the Detroit Red Wings where he has been ever since.

His two separate one-year deals with the Red Wings have allowed for 19 appearances at the NHL level with two goals and four points. His real fruitfulness with the Red Wings organization has been his time with the team’s AHL affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins, although he’s been mired by injuries. He’s appeared in 54 games for the Griffins over the last two years while posting 18 goals and 43 points.

It will be challenging for Luff to crack a re-worked Panthers’ bottom-six but his recent success at the AHL level has at least garnered him an opportunity. Florida does not have a deep crop of forwards at the AHL level as they struggled to score last year in Charlotte. Luff will have to assume a next-man-up mentality heading into the season but at least it will be in pursuit of joining the roster of the defending Stanley Cup Champions.
