San Jose Sharks Sign Fredrik Claesson To One-Year Deal

January 11, 2021 at 3:05 pm CDT | by Holger Stolzenberg Leave a Comment

Jan 11: The Sharks have officially announced the Claesson contract, while also placing him on waivers earlier today. GM Doug Wilson released a short statement:

Fredrik is a strong defensive player who has the ability to shut down the opposition quickly. His NHL experience provides value to our organization’s defensive depth. We are happy to have him.

Jan 10: The San Jose Sharks have added some depth on their defense, signing free agent Fredrik Claesson to a one-year, two-way contract, according to CapFriendly. The deal includes a $700K NHL salary as well as $200K in the AHL, although $300K is guaranteed.

The 28-year-old Claesson has spent quite a bit of time in the NHL, having appeared already in 155 contests, but will be joining his fifth franchise already, including four teams in the last two years. A talented player, known for his hard slapshot, Claesson played 113 games with the Ottawa Senators, the team who drafted him, but due to defensive concerns, the team opted not to offer him a qualifying offer. He signed with the New York Rangers in July 2018 and played 37 games for them, but also wasn’t given a qualifying offer. He then signed with the Carolina Hurricanes last season, but never played for the NHL squad. He was traded at the trade deadline to the New Jersey Devils in the Sami Vatanen deal and played five games for New Jersey before play was suspended. The Devils did not bring him back.

Claesson’s addition could suggest that the team needs depth in their system. Top-four defenseman Radim Simek said several days ago that his knee continues to hurt from last season. The addition of Claesson would suggest the Sharks are worried about Simek and hope that Claesson can fill a void in their system. If Simek goes down for any time, it’s likely that second-year defenseman Mario Ferraro would move up into the top-four, opening a spot on the third pairing, where Claesson would at least get a shot.

Jay Bouwmeester Announces Retirement

January 11, 2021 at 1:55 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 3 Comments

It shouldn’t come as any shock today that Jay Bouwmeester has retired from the NHL. The veteran defenseman announced as much through Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic, explaining that he “knew [he] was done essentially when it happened, to be quite honest.” ’It’ in this case refers to the cardiac episode that Bouwmeester experienced in February of last year, collapsing on the bench and requiring transport to a nearby hospital.

Bouwmeester didn’t play again but did show his face around the Blues again after recovering and last month St. Louis GM Doug Armstrong was clear that he would love to work with him at some point in the future.

It’s hard to explain just how beloved the 37-year-old Bouwmeester is around the NHL, not by teammates for his personality and demeanor, but by coaching staffs and front offices for his unassuming rock-solid gameplay. The smooth-skating defenseman played in 1,240 NHL games during a 17-year career, but it was rare for him to really dominate the highlight packages. Instead, he’d calmly defend and move the puck quickly, logging 25, 26, or 27 minutes of ice time without even being noticeable for much of it.

In 2007-08 for instance, he averaged 27:28 a game for the Florida Panthers, scoring 15 goals and 37 points in the process. He failed to receive even a single vote for the Norris Trophy despite playing more than anyone else that year. Even if the major awards didn’t recognize him, his coaches did. Bouwmeester was playing more than 21 minutes a night even at the very end of his career, still calmly diffusing offensive chances with his floating stride.

Even though his career was cut short, Bouwmeester still cracked the top-100 for games played in the history of the NHL, currently tied with Patrik Elias and Eric Staal for 96th overall. He managed to raise the Stanley Cup for the first time in 2019, 17 years after he was drafted third overall by the Panthers.

Perhaps most importantly, Bouwmeester told LeBrun that though it hasn’t been “totally smooth sailing” since his incident, he’s staying active and is “feeling OK.”

Frederik Gauthier Signs With Arizona Coyotes

January 11, 2021 at 12:39 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

When his name appeared on today’s waiver list, it was clear that Frederik Gauthier had done enough to earn an NHL contract with the Arizona Coyotes. The big forward had been attending camp on a professional tryout but has now signed a one-year, two-way contract with the team. Though the team did not release the financial details, Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports reports it is worth $700K at the NHL level and $150K in the AHL.

Gauthier, 25, became an unrestricted free agent this offseason when the Toronto Maple Leafs decided not to issue him a qualifying offer as an RFA. The 2013 first-round pick never did develop much of an offensive game, but has still played 168 games at the NHL level and is a capable fourth-line center. Standing 6’5″ and listed at 239-lbs, he offers some size and strength to the bottom of the depth chart—though has been criticized in the past for not using his large frame effectively enough.

It’s unlikely that Gauthier dresses for every game this season, but he can serve as a nice taxi squad member to move in and out of the lineup when necessary. His career-high of seven goals game in 61 games last season and he has registered 31 points in his NHL career.

Mike Hoffman Officially Signs With St. Louis Blues

January 11, 2021 at 11:33 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 5 Comments

Though it had been expected for some time, the St. Louis Blues officially signed Mike Hoffman to a one-year contract today. The deal will pay the free agent sniper $4MM and effectively ends his professional tryout. The Blues had to wait to complete some cap gymnastics in order to fit Hoffman in, but the contract is now filed.

Hoffman, 31, was our fourth-ranked player on the annual Top 50 UFA list at the start of the offseason, but after the market quickly turned was left without a long-term deal. Though perhaps other teams offered multi-year pacts, he ended up agreeing to a one-year deal with a strong club in the hopes that his market will be strong again next offseason when things are, hopefully, a little closer to normal. There’s absolutely no on-ice reason for Hoffman’s long wait as he was arguably the best goal-scoring weapon available on the market and now goes to a team that will be in need of a new sniper.

The Blues are without Vladimir Tarasenko for the time being and watched Alex Steen retire due to injury, meaning there’s plenty of opportunity for Hoffman in St. Louis. He’s been playing in camp so far with Jaden Schwartz and Robert Thomas on a dynamic second line, while also being a go-to option on the powerplay.

Taylor Hall also settled for a one-year deal but went to a rebuilding team in Buffalo for the chance to play beside an all-world talent like Jack Eichel. Hoffman took a different approach, joining a strong team that is a lot more likely to bring some playoff time. In his near-500 game NHL career, Hoffman has only played in the postseason three times and that includes Florida’s qualification-round loss to the New York Rangers last summer. In St. Louis, there’s not only a chance he could rebuild some value, but he also might get a chance to raise the Stanley Cup as they did in 2019.

How can they afford him exactly? It’s a complicated dance that will include placing Tarasenko and Steen on long-term injured reserve, while likely maintaining an NHL roster below the 23-man limit. Worth it for a player who has scored at least 22 goals in each of his six full seasons, but still difficult to navigate throughout the season.

Florida Panthers Claim Noah Juulsen

January 11, 2021 at 11:09 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

The Florida Panthers have claimed Noah Juulsen off waivers from the Montreal Canadiens according to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet, adding the young defenseman just before the season begins.

Juulsen, 23, is the second young defenseman the Panthers have claimed off waivers in recent days, following the acquisition of Gustav Forsling over the weekend. Adding those two to a group that already had a lot of offseason turnover is interesting, especially when paired with Keith Yandle’s recent demotion. Yandle has practiced away from the main roster group for the past two days, spending time with the likely scratches and minor leaguers instead as other players are given a chance to compete.

It’s not clear at all now how things will shake out in Florida, but Juulsen is likely just pleased he’ll get a fresh start somewhere else. The 2015 first-round pick has had nothing but trouble with the Montreal Canadiens, suffering injury after injury at both the NHL and AHL levels. In fact, since arriving in the professional ranks in 2017 he has suited up for just 93 games combined, including just 37 over the past two seasons.

Healthy now and ready to contribute, it will be interesting to see how he will be deployed in Florida. To be placed on their taxi squad he would have to be placed on waivers again, at which point Montreal would have a chance to bring him back. That means a roster spot seems likely, but with such little game experience, it’s hard to imagine him stepping right into the opening night lineup.

Arizona Coyotes Hire Shane Doan

January 11, 2021 at 10:14 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 4 Comments

The relationship has been mended. Shane Doan, perhaps the most recognizable Arizona Coyotes player of all-time, has rejoined the organization as Chief Hockey Development Officer. He will report directly to team president Xavier Gutierrez and serve as a strategic advisor to the owner Alex Meruelo and GM Bill Armstrong. Gutierrez released a short statement on the hire:

Shane Doan is a Coyotes legend and a Valley icon. For the past 25 years, Shane has been an incredible ambassador for our franchise and has represented the Coyotes with dignity and class. He is beloved by our fan base and we are thrilled to have him back with us where he belongs.

Doan, 44, actually started his career when the franchise was still known as the Winnipeg Jets, playing 74 games in the 1995-96 season before the move to the desert. He would spend his entire career with the organization, captaining the squad from 2003 to 2017, but his departure from the team was a little awkward and contentious. Regardless, he’s back with them now after spending the last three seasons with the league offices and should be a valuable asset for the organization.

Snapshots: Yandle, Podkolzin, Cizikas, Grubauer

January 10, 2021 at 7:55 pm CDT | by Holger Stolzenberg 2 Comments

While no decisions have been made yet or will be made in the coming weeks, Florida Panthers head coach Joel Quenneville split his roster in practice, with the core of the team on one side and the fringe players on the other. One notable name on the wrong side of the ice was veteran defenseman Keith Yandle, who was working with the fringe players, according to FloridaHockeyNow’s George Richards.

Quenneville said those groups can change throughout this week, but he said he wants to see some of the team’s younger defensemen for a while. While it might be easy to dismiss a move like this, the team is trying to develop a better defense-first attitude, something that the highly-paid Yandle can struggle with at times. The 34-year-old blueliner still has three years remaining on his contract at $6.35MM per season, meaning there is a chance that Yandle may sit from time to time this season. Yandle’s playing time dropped last season under Quenneville after years of averaging more than 20 minutes. He averaged 19:42, almost three minutes less than the previous year.

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman points out that this is worth keeping an eye on, especially since he is currently the top active player in the league in consecutive games with 866 and is fourth all-time.

  • The Vancouver Canucks are expected to sign and begin playing 2019 first-round pick Vasili Podkolzin later this season after his contract with KHL’s SKA-St. Petersburg expires on April 30. Of course after being a healthy scratch by SKA Saturday, rumors began that the 19-year-old Russian could be heading to Vancouver sooner than later. However, TSN’s Rick Dhaliwal reports that there is no truth to the rumor. According to his sources, the plan remains to leave the forward with SKA for the remainder of the season.
  • Despite an injury prone season last year, New York Islanders forward Casey Cizikas was hoping for a healthy season in 2021. Cizikas missed time with a left leg laceration and then suffered a detached retina in the postseason bubble last season. However injuries keep hitting the fourth-line forward. Newsday’s Andrew Gross reports that Cizikas went down Sunday in a team scrimmage. Linemate Matt Martin and Cizikas sandwiched defenseman Thomas Hickey along the boards during the scrimmage and Cizikas went down in pain. He was attended to on the ice, then on the bench and taken into the locker room after the game. “He’s getting checked out,” coach Barry Trotz said. “The first indication may be more positive than negative. But I don’t have a firm update.”
  • Colorado Avalanche head coach Jared Bednar said he expects goaltender Philipp Grubauer to be the team’s starting goaltender entering the season and expects him and Pavel Francouz to split games 60/40, according to The Athletic’s Peter Baugh. Bednar is confident that Grubauer, who missed the first three days of camp, will be ready for opening night.

Vancouver Canucks To Resume Practice Monday After Cancelling Practice

January 10, 2021 at 7:10 pm CDT | by Holger Stolzenberg Leave a Comment

7:13 p.m. – Sportsnet reports that the Canucks are expected to practice on Monday. The team cancelled practice due to an abundance of caution, but have cleared to team to return to the ice on Monday.

12:50 p.m. – The Vancouver Canucks announced they have cancelled practice and all workouts Sunday due to concern over potential COVID-19 exposure. The team will announce their schedule for Monday later today.

The Canucks are the fourth team to be have their training camp interrupted and the first in Canada. The Dallas Stars had the most serious outbreak with six players test positive for coronavirus, forcing the team to push back their season-opener. The Columbus Blue Jackets also shut down practice on the same day, but went back to work Saturday. The Pittsburgh Penguins cancelled practice Saturday, but are expected to scrimmage Sunday evening.

These types of shut downs could become a common safety precaution for multiple teams as they make sure that their players aren’t being exposed to the virus. Monday was supposed to be an off-day on the Canucks training camp schedule, meaning the team could make up practices then, if the team deems it safe.
