Zach Trotman Undergoes Surgery

January 15, 2021 at 2:06 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Pittsburgh Penguins will be down a depth defenseman for the next while, announcing today that Zach Trotman has undergone successfully knee surgery. The procedure was to repair a torn meniscus and comes with a recovery timeline of four to six weeks. Trotman had previously been placed on injured reserve, where he will remain for at least the next month.

Trotman, 30, played just eight games with the Penguins last season, spending much more of the season at the minor league level. In fact, he’s played in just 24 games since arriving in Pittsburgh in 2017, filling in on occasion when the team dealt with injuries on the back end. The 6’3″ defenseman has just 13 points in his 91-game NHL career and wasn’t likely to see a ton of action this season anyway.

Still, losing defensive depth at any point in a condensed season is troubling, but perhaps even more so when the Penguins are already dealing with some struggles at the position. Cody Ceci was moved out of the starting lineup at morning skate today, replaced on the third pairing by Chad Ruhwedel after a brutal opening night.

There’s more than enough depth in Pittsburgh to deal with this injury for now, but things can quickly get whittled down in a season like this. Six weeks would put a return for Trotman at the end of February after a good chunk of the schedule is already completed.

Ben Hutton Signs With Anaheim Ducks

January 15, 2021 at 1:34 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Anaheim Ducks have officially signed Ben Hutton to a one-year contract for the rest of the season. The deal is worth $950K according to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet. It was clear that a deal was coming when Hutton appeared on the COVID Protocol Related Absences list yesterday. It’s not clear when he will be removed from that list so that he’s available to play, but the Ducks have finally announced the deal.

Hutton, 27, was one of the players that felt an offseason squeeze, forced to sign a professional tryout despite a relatively impressive NHL resume. While he likely shouldn’t be deployed on a top pairing, Hutton has nearly 350 games of experience and has averaged just under 20 minutes a night over his five-year career. In 2019-20 he played in 65 games for the Los Angeles Kings and registered 16 points, while putting up strong possession numbers once again.

The Ducks relied heavily on their top two pairs last night to open the season, with Cam Fowler, Kevin Shattenkirk, Josh Manson, and Hampus Lindholm all logging at least 20 minutes. If Hutton can add a little depth to the bottom-pair rotation perhaps they won’t have to put so much responsibility on those top names, at least not every game.

One other thing to remember with Hutton in Anaheim is that he could be another trade deadline piece for them to flip. The one-year, low-money deal will be attractive to contenders partway through the year, especially if he’s able to prove he can still play at a high level.

Snapshots: Quarantine, Lundqvist, Hoffman

January 15, 2021 at 1:24 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 2 Comments

A lot of the focus for trade watchers right now is on Pierre-Luc Dubois and the Montreal Canadiens, but Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports pours some cold water on the wild speculation today, noting how difficult it will be for trades to be completed in-season. If Dubois—or anyone on a U.S.-based team for that matter—were to be acquired by the Canadiens, he’d face at minimum a 14-day quarantine. That means missing seven or eight games, a huge amount in a shortened 56-game schedule.

Still, for a player like Dubois who would be a core piece for the next several years, missing seven games doesn’t seem like it should really matter that much. If he does get traded midseason (which is far from a sure thing), dropping out of the bidding because of a two-week quarantine would probably be a mistake.

  • Henrik Lundqvist left the hospital yesterday after his open-heart procedure, tweeting out how happy he was to head home to his kids. The veteran goaltender will not play this season and instead is focusing on his health, though has not officially retired from playing yet. The Washington Capitals signed Craig Anderson this week and are using him instead as the third goaltender this season, while Lundqvist recovers from surgery. His one-year contract expires at the end of the season.
  • After getting his work visa issues dealt with, Mike Hoffman will be in the lineup for the St. Louis Blues this evening. He’ll be on the second line with Jaden Schwartz and Robert Thomas where he spent most of training camp. Sammy Blais, who is serving a two-game suspension, will come out of the lineup. Hoffman comes to St. Louis on a one-year deal to reset his free agent market after waiting nearly the entire offseason to sign.

Los Angeles Kings Place Two On Waivers

January 15, 2021 at 11:20 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 3 Comments

Waivers today includes just two players and both are from the Los Angeles Kings. Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic reports that Mark Alt and Troy Grosenick have been placed on waivers.

The placements would suggest that the Kings will get some players off the COVID Protocol Related Absences list before tomorrow night’s game against the Minnesota Wild. Los Angeles was using Grosenick as a backup for Jonathan Quick while Calvin Petersen remained unable to practice or play, while the return of either Sean Walker or Kurtis MacDermid would make Alt expendable.

Both players should probably clear and be assigned to the taxi squad tomorrow. If they do, Matt Villalta, who was serving as the third-string goaltender, will likely be reassigned to AHL training camp. All of that relies on there being a lack of claims though, something that certainly isn’t a guarantee at this point. In the early season we’ve already seen several goaltenders nabbed off waivers and though Grosenick has almost no NHL experience he does have a long track record of success in the minor leagues.

Alt too has only played in a handful of NHL games, 19 to be exact including last night’s overtime loss, but has been a useful minor league option for the last several years. The 29-year-old was a second-round pick of the Carolina Hurricanes back in 2010 and scored 13 points in 55 games last season for the Colorado Eagles.

Winnipeg Jets Claim Anton Forsberg

January 15, 2021 at 11:17 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 2 Comments

Anton Forsberg is on his third team in a week, claimed off waivers by the Winnipeg Jets. Forsberg never did leave Edmonton when the Carolina Hurricanes claimed him from the Oilers, meaning he will be able to travel to Winnipeg and not have to face a border quarantine. He will, however, need to stay on the Jets active roster for the time being and cannot be assigned to the taxi squad or minor leagues until he clears waivers.

Of course, carrying a third goaltender on the active roster really isn’t an issue for the Jets at the moment, given they’re already into long-term injured reserve space. The team will have to move one of the players from their roster onto the taxi squad, but that shouldn’t be an issue given Kristian Vesalainen and Logan Stanley, two waiver-exempt players, were both scratched last night. (UPDATE: Vesalainen and Stanley have both been sent to the taxi squad.)

Forsberg meanwhile becomes the Jets third-string option after Winnipeg lost Eric Comrie to the New Jersey Devils. The veteran netminder still doesn’t figure to play a ton this season but adds some depth to a position the Jets can ill afford to be weak at. Connor Hellebuyck carries the load, but if he were to ever go down to injury or illness, Laurent Brossoit is the only other Jets netminder signed to an NHL deal in North America.

Minor Transactions: 01/15/21

January 15, 2021 at 10:56 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The NHL moves will come fast and furious now that the season has begun, but that doesn’t mean we’ll stop keeping an eye on overseas transactions. This page will be updated throughout the day with all the notable minor moves around the world of hockey.

  • The Tampa Bay Lightning have moved Boo Nieves to the AHL as minor league camps open after he was signed and cleared waivers earlier this week. The 26-year-old forward will serve as valuable depth for a team looking to take another run at the Stanley Cup.
  • Theodor Niederbach, a second-round pick by the Detroit Red Wings, has been extended by Frolunda and then loaned to MODO for the rest of the season. The Swedish junior league that Niederbach had been playing in has shut down the rest of their season, meaning this was one of the only ways he could continue to get playing time.
  • Marko Dano has been recalled from loan by the Winnipeg Jets and assigned to the Manitoba Moose for AHL training camp. The depth forward was playing for Trencin Dukla in Slovakia, where he had three points in two games.

Teams Contacting Florida About Aleksander Barkov’s Availability

January 14, 2021 at 8:58 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose 10 Comments

Panthers center Aleksander Barkov has emerged as one of the top centers in the league and is frequently discussed as one of the more underrated players in the league.  He has been a fixture in Florida’s lineup for the last seven seasons but with new GM Bill Zito starting to change up the roster, teams have been inquiring about Barkov’s availability, reports TSN’s Frank Seravalli in the latest Insider Trading segment (video link).  Zito’s response to all suitors thus far has been that Barkov is unavailable though.

On the surface, it might seem a little odd that teams would be inquiring about Florida’s top player at this point but the idea seems to come from his contract situation.  The 25-year-old still has two years left on his deal at a bargain price tag of $5.9MM but at this point, teams are questioning Barkov’s willingness to sign what would be a long-term, lucrative extension given Florida’s lack of postseason success since he has been there.  Over those seven years, the team hasn’t won a playoff series and has only qualified for the postseason twice and one of those came last season when they were added to the expanded field of 24.

Barkov’s offensive game has really taken off the last three seasons and he is tied for 17th league-wide in points over that span.  On top of that, he has been a key player in all situations and has logged over 20 minutes per game in each of those three years; his ATOI of 21:18 is eighth-most among NHL forwards in that span.  Basically, he has been exactly what Florida hoped he’d become when they drafted him with the second-overall pick back in 2013.

Premier centers in the prime of their career rarely become available on the open market and even with the current financial landscape (which could certainly change over the next 18 months), Barkov could easily command more than $10MM if he makes it to unrestricted free agency.  If he goes that route, Florida risks losing him for nothing which clearly has led to the inquiries but for now at least, Zito will try to continue to reshape his roster in the hopes of convincing his franchise player to stick around for the long term with many general managers around the league keeping close tabs on their progress.

Sammy Blais Receives Two-Game Suspension

January 14, 2021 at 7:26 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose 3 Comments

The verdict is in and the first suspension of the regular season has been handed down as the Department of Player Safety announced (video link) that Blues winger Sammy Blais has received a two-game suspension for his illegal check to the head on Colorado defenseman Devon Toews on Wednesday night.

The play occurred early in the first period with Blais being assessed a minor penalty for elbowing at the time.  Toews did leave the game briefly but returned and wound up logging 22:17, second on the team behind Cale Makar.

Blais will forfeit just shy of $26K in salary which will go to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.  As he’s not a repeat offender, the denominator in the equation to calculate the forfeited pay is the number of days in the season instead of the number of games.  Blais has an AAV of $1.5MM and 2/1116th of that is his fine.  He will miss the rematch against the Avs on Friday as well as the first of two games against San Jose and will be eligible to return to the lineup on Wednesday.

COVID Protocol Related Absences: 01/14/21

January 14, 2021 at 7:23 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

As they did yesterday, the NHL has publicly released the list of players that are unavailable to their respective teams due to being in COVID-19 protocol.  Today’s list is as follows:

Anaheim – Ben Hutton
Boston – Karson Kuhlman
Colorado – Erik Johnson
Columbus – Mikko Koivu
Detroit – Christian Djoos; Darren Helm
Edmonton – Gaetan Haas; James Neal
Los Angeles – Kurtis MacDermid, Calvin Petersen, Sean Walker
Minnesota – Alex Stalock
Nashville – Mikael Granlund, Luca Sbisa
NY Rangers – Justin Richards
Philadelphia – Shayne Gostisbehere
Pittsburgh – Kasperi Kapanen
San Jose – Maxim Letunov
Vancouver – Jordie Benn, J.T. Miller

Hutton is the only newcomer to today’s list while Coyotes winger Lawson Crouse, Panthers defenseman Markus Nutivaara, and Jets winger Nikolaj Ehlers were all removed.  It’s important to note that someone’s presence on this list doesn’t necessarily mean that they have the virus.  Included in the NHL’s list of possible reasons for someone being on the list is are the following:

(1) an initial positive test which remains unconfirmed until confirmatory testing is completed pursuant to the Positive Test Protocol; (2) mandated isolation for symptomatic individuals pursuant to the Positive Test Protocol; (3) required quarantine as a high-risk close contact in accordance with the Positive Test Protocol; (4) isolation based on a confirmed positive test result and/or; (5) quarantine for travel or other reasons as outlined in the COVID-19 Protocol

As was the case yesterday, the league declined to identify anyone from Dallas and will hold off on doing so until they are able to play in their first game.  They had a significant outbreak early in camp as 17 of the 27 players that tested positive in training camp were from the Stars.

Islanders Finalize Contract With Cory Schneider

January 14, 2021 at 6:48 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose 3 Comments

After nearly three months of speculation, Cory Schneider has finalized his contract with the Islanders.  CapFriendly reports that the veteran has inked a one-year, one-way contract worth $700K.  They also report (Twitter link) that he has been designated as waivers non-roster status which means that he will be placed on waivers on Friday for the purpose of assignment to either their taxi squad or their AHL affiliate in Bridgeport.

It was only a few years ago that Schneider was entrenched as the starting goalie for New Jersey.  He got off to a tremendous start after being acquired at the 2013 draft for the pick used to select Bo Horvat, notching a 2.14 GAA with a .924 SV% over his first three seasons.  However, after his performance slipped in 2016-17, his play completely went off the rails after that while he also dealt with lingering hip issues.  Last season, he actually had more appearances in the minors (14) than in the NHL (13) which led New Jersey to buy out the final two seasons of his contract, paying him $2MM per season over the next four years as a result.

With Semyon Varlamov and Ilya Sorokin set as the goaltending tandem for this season and the team not being in a position where they will be needing to shuffle players back and forth daily to bank cap space (since they’re using LTIR already), Schneider doesn’t have a path to playing time with the Isles in the near future.  But if an injury arises, he will likely be the first one recalled.  That’s quite the fall from grace after being one of the better goalies in the league only a few years ago but Schneider has at least now secured a contract at the very least.
