Shane Bowers Signs With Colorado Avalanche

March 29, 2019 at 11:30 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

Friday: The Avalanche have officially announced the contract that will begin next season. That allows Bowers to sign an amateur tryout with the Colorado Eagles for the rest of this year to get into some game action.

Thursday: As if Boston University hadn’t seen enough of their top players sign this week, Shane Bowers has now added his name to that group. Despite a somewhat disappointing sophomore season, Bowers is now expected to sign his three-year entry-level contract with the Colorado Avalanche according to Jeff Cox of the New England Hockey Journal and Bob McKenzie of TSN. The deal can begin this season, but the first year will not be burned given the Avalanche have only five games remaining.

The 19-year old Bowers was originally a first-round pick of the Ottawa Senators, but arrived in the Colorado organization as part of the Matt Duchene trade last season. The two-way center got off to a great start at BU in 2017-18 with 17 goals and 32 points in 40 games, but took something of a step back this year. With just 11 goals and 21 points, the teenage center may have muted expectations somewhat but is still a solid prospect to add to the Avalanche development system.

In fact, there’s reason to believe that Bowers can develop into a real key contributor for the Avalanche down the road. The team already has their elite scoring center locked up in Nathan MacKinnon, but likely won’t see many more years of prominence from Carl Soderberg even as the 33-year old experienced something of a renaissance this season. Soderberg has just one year remaining on his current deal and will be 34 at the beginning of next season.

Behind those two the center depth on the Avalanche isn’t quite as clear. Alexander Kerfoot hasn’t progressed much from where he was last season, and it’s not a sure thing that any of Tyson Jost, J.T. Compher or Vladislav Kamenev will be able to step into a full-time top-six role in the middle of the ice. Bowers offers another lottery ticket for the Avalanche to try and develop at the position, not to mention whoever they pick in this year’s draft. The fact that he has been touted for his defense and penalty killing ability could lead Bowers to fill a much needed role for the team down the road.

Max Lajoie, Erik Brannstrom Out With Injuries

March 29, 2019 at 10:49 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Ottawa Senators don’t have a lot to play for over the next few games, but that’s not true of the Belleville Senators. The AHL club is battling for a spot in the Calder Cup playoffs, but will have to do it without the benefit of a pair of defensemen. Maxime Lajoie will undergo sports hernia surgery and has been ruled out for the rest of the year, while Erik Brannstrom is dealing with an upper-body injury and has been listed as “week-to-week” according to Kyle Bukauskas of Sportsnet.

Lajoie, 21, was an unexpected contributor for Ottawa this season, playing 56 games with the team after impressing in training camp. Originally a fifth-round pick of the team in 2016, he found his footing at the AHL level in 2017-18 and came into camp with something to prove. Seven goals and 15 points later, the young defenseman was sent down to the minor leagues just before the trade deadline in order to keep him playoff eligible in the AHL. Unfortunately he suited up just three times for Belleville and now faces an eight to ten week recovery period.

Brannstrom meanwhile was the jewel of the Mark Stone trade earlier this year and impressed the organization right away. Making his NHL debut on March 14th, he ended up playing in two games for Ottawa and was held scoreless. His nine games for Belleville went a bit better, but he’ll now have to wait a while to get back into the lineup. The super talented defenseman is likely ticketed for a full-time role in the NHL next season, but competing for a Calder Cup would only serve to benefit his development.

Belleville currently sits just two points ahead of the Cleveland Monsters for the last playoff spot in the North Division, and unfortunately has played in two more games than them. With just seven games left it’s not clear if Brannstrom will get back in time to help them at all, or if he would even be ready for the first round of the playoffs.

Minor Transactions: 03/29/19

March 29, 2019 at 9:38 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Montreal Canadiens weren’t able to win last night’s important game against the Columbus Blue Jackets, and now things are even tighter in the Eastern Conference playoff race. It’ll have to wait for tomorrow though, as the NHL has mostly Western Conference playoff implications on tap tonight. The Arizona Coyotes and Colorado Avalanche will do battle in a must-win situation for both teams, while the Minnesota Wild are just trying to stay alive in a game against the Vegas Golden Knights. As they prepare for the action, we’ll be right here keeping track of all the minor moves.

  • The Detroit Red Wings have recalled Martin Frk and Jake Chelios under emergency conditions in time for their game tonight. The game will be a battle for draft lottery odds against the New Jersey Devils and very well could involved several players held out for minor injuries. If Chelios—the son of legendary NHL defenseman Chris Chelios—gets into a game with the Red Wings he would be making his long awaited NHL debut at the age of 28.
  • Troy Grosenick has been recalled by the Nashville Predators, who announced that Juuse Saros is sick. Grosenick is expected to back up Pekka Rinne in tonight’s game against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
  • The Boston Bruins have recalled Karson Kuhlman again under emergency conditions, meaning he’ll turn around and come back from Providence. The young forward was sent down just yesterday, but will get another chance to experience the NHL.

Alain Vigneault To Coach Canada At World Championship

March 29, 2019 at 8:35 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

Hockey Canada announced their management team earlier this week for the upcoming World Championship, and now have a coach to lead the players on the ice. Alain Vigneault will be named head coach of the men’s team according to Darren Dreger of TSN, who also notes that the assistants will be named at some point in the future.

Vigneault last coached in the NHL during the 2017-18 season, his fifth year with the New York Rangers. The team missed the playoffs for the first time under his tenure, but were open about moving in a newer, younger direction and hired rookie coach David Quinn straight out of the NCAA ranks as his replacement. His firing didn’t come at the end of his contract though, and the team will still be paying Vigneault $4.1MM next season.

That is of course unless another NHL team wants to hire him and works out a deal to cover some of that salary. That would likely be the goal of the veteran head coach this spring when he gets behind the bench again for a team that could be loaded with Canadian stars. Connor McDavid, Drew Doughty, Claude Giroux, Aaron Ekblad, Jonathan Toews, Eric Staal and many others could all be out of the playoffs this year and available for the management group to invite.

Vigneault has a career record of 648-435-35-98 in the NHL, and has gone to the Stanley Cup Finals twice.

Has The Status Quo Changed For Patrick Maroon?

March 28, 2019 at 9:05 pm CDT | by Zach Leach Leave a Comment

It’s been an up-and-down season for Patrick Maroon, to say the least. It may be more accurate to call it an up-and-down calendar year even. Things had not gone according to plan and yet Maroon’s play of late has the arrow pointing back up and it may lead to an extended stay with his hometown St. Louis Blues.

The 2017-18 season was a career best for Maroon, as he totaled 43 points in 74 games with two teams. Maroon began the season with the Edmonton Oilers, but it was after a trade deadline deal to the New Jersey Devils that he truly flourished. Maroon was nearly a point-per-game player for the Devils down the stretch, recording 13 points in 17 games. Unexpectedly though, the market never really developed for the 30-year-old power forward. Rather than land the anticipated upgrade to his previous three-year, $6MM contract, Maroon settled for a one-year, $1.75MM deal ten days into free agency with the Blues. There was plenty of speculation that the St. Louis native had some guarantee of an extension once the team could free up future cap space, which would help to explain why he took a discount after a career year.

However, the start to his tenure in St. Louis could not have gone any worse. It took 16 games for Maroon to record his first goal and through the end of February he had just 16 points through 55 games. Add the Blues’ early struggles in and patience had run out on Maroon by January, when rumors emerged that he was likely to be dealt before the trade deadline. Instead, St. Louis began playing well just in time and opted to hold on to all of their pieces for a playoff push. The decision has worked out well when it comes to Maroon, as he has finally picked up his game when it matters most. Since the beginning of March, Maroon has nine points in 13 games, including a recent stretch with six points in five contests. Maroon is now up to 25 points on the year and is back playing at the top of his game.

So will it be enough to get that extension in St. Louis? Even after playing poorly through the first half of the season, Maroon is outperforming his modest salary this season and is due a raise, likely in both money and term. The Blues have a number of core forwards signed long-term as well as several promising prospects knocking on the door, but Maroon’s resurgence and proven willingness to take a hometown discount could again be attractive to the team. It remains to be seen if Maroon can continue scoring in these final weeks and into the postseason, but if he does it will only make the decision easier for St. Louis to give him a new contract just months after being ready to trade him away.

AHL Signings: Vela, Spinner, Bradley

March 28, 2019 at 7:31 pm CDT | by Zach Leach Leave a Comment

Forward Marcus Vela has signed on with San Jose, but not the NHL team that drafted him, instead their AHL affiliate. The San Jose Barracuda announced a deal with the University of New Hampshire standout today, who has seemingly passed up the opportunity to become a free agent later this summer in favor of a minor league contract within his drafted organization. Vela was a seventh-round draft pick of the Sharks back in 2015 out of the BCHL and went on to play four seasons with the UNH Wildcats. While he improved in each collegiate season and eventually became the team captain, he maxed out at 18 points in his best season and never really showed next-level offensive ability. The 6’2″ center is still a strong, smart, two-way player, but it seems that both he and the Sharks were unsure if he was ready for an NHL contract. Rather than wait for his rights to expire in August and hope for an NHL contract elsewhere, Vela seems content to prove himself in the AHL and potentially earn his entry-level deal later on.

  • Another drafted forward joining his organization’s farm team is Steven Spinner. Spinner, drafted all the way back in 2014 by the Washington Capitals, signed an amateur tryout offer with the AHL’s Hershey Bears, the team announced. Spinner, 23, just wrapped up a four-year career at the University of Nebraska-Omaha that likely fell short of the Capitals’ expectations for the sixth-round pick. The right winger accumulated only 56 points in 136 NCAA games, capped off by a mere four-point senior campaign. Such production doesn’t really warrant an NHL contract, but Spinner will get a shot to show he can do better at the pro level down the stretch and may yet earn a shot in Washington. It seems more likely that this is a precursor to an AHL contract next season, though.
  • Colorado College’s leading scorer this season, Trey Bradley, is one of the few notable hockey players who hails from Tampa, Florida, so naturally the undrafted free agent has signed with… the Toronto Marlies? Bradley won’t be joining the pipeline of his hometown team, but instead that of one of their divisional rivals. The Marlies announced that Bradley has joined the team on an ATO for the remainder of this season, but has signed on for the 2019-20 campaign as well. Bradley is fresh off of a season in which he scored 34 points in 41 games, his second straight season with 30+ points for Colorado College. He should be able to translate his success in the NCHC to the AHL relatively well.

Flames, Senators Among Teams Pursuing Joakim Nygard

March 28, 2019 at 6:17 pm CDT | by Zach Leach 1 Comment

In tonight’s “Insider Trading” segment on TSN, Darren Dreger reported that one free agent race is already heating up more than three months before unrestricted free agency opens in the NHL. Joakim Nygard, who is currently playing for the top-seeded Farjestad BK in Swedish Hockey League postseason, is looking to make the jump to the NHL this off-season and there is already considerable interest. Among the teams rumored to be leading the pack in the pursuit of Nygard are two Canadian clubs on opposite ends of the spectrum, the Calgary Flames and Ottawa Senators.

It comes as little surprise that Nygard has been attracting attention this season. The 26-year-old forward is enjoying a career year in the SHL, skating on a line with Boston Bruins prospect Oskar Steen, the only Farjestad forward who has outscored him this season. Nygard played in all 52 regular season games this season, recording a career-high 21 goals and 35 points. Nygard finished second in the league goal-scoring race and helped to fuel his team to a top finish. Now he has to finish the job in the playoffs.

After that, he will be free to leave and it looks certain that he is headed to the NHL. In fact, Dreger states that Nygard’s camp has been receiving interest for months now and the move across the Atlantic has been a long time coming. He reports that several GM’s have checked in on Nygard over in Sweden this season, but says that the Flames and Senators specifically are “in hard”. Dreger also offers an NHL comparison for Nygard in Carl Hagelin, stating that Nygard’s skating ability is elite and he can “flat out fly”. The book on Nygard had been that he has the physical and technical tools down, but was still raw in his hockey sense and execution. It seems that he has improved in that area over the past few years and is now ready to show his complete game at the next level.

The battle to sign Nygard will be especially interesting because money won’t be the main bargaining chip. At 26, Nygard will still be forced to sign a one-year entry-level contract, meaning his immediate NHL earnings are capped no matter where he goes. More likely than not, opportunity will be the defining factor in the Swede’s decision. If that is the case, one would think Ottawa would have a major leg up as a team needing to replace several top-nine forwards before next season. Could the Senators start the off-season off early by adding Nygard? Keep an eye out once Farjestad’s season ends in the next month or so.

Prospect Notes: Jenik, Sadek, Hughes

March 28, 2019 at 3:46 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

Though the team hasn’t announced the deal yet, Jan Jenik has announced that he has signed an entry-level contract with the Arizona Coyotes (h/t Craig Morgan from The Athletic). Jenik is currently dealing with an injury but his junior team the Hamilton Bulldogs were recently eliminated from the OHL playoffs meaning he could jump to the AHL to get a look at the professional level.

Jenik, 18, was selected 65th overall in 2018 and split this season between the Czech Republic and OHL. In 27 games for the Bulldogs he recorded 30 points, but could potentially go back to the junior ranks next season to continue his development. Another lottery ticket for the Coyotes, we’ll have to wait to see when they actually announced the contract.

  • The Iowa Wild have signed Jack Sadek to an amateur tryout, allowing the 21-year old defenseman to get his feet wet at the professional level after a season in the NCAA. The seventh-round pick finished his career at the University of Minnesota with an 18-point season, but will have to prove he deserves an NHL contract in Minnesota. Sadek technically will become an unrestricted free agent in August if he waits that long, but a minor league pact could keep him in the Wild organization.
  • The time has come for Vancouver Canucks prospect Quinn Hughes, who will make his NHL debut tonight after nursing a foot injury. Hughes signed his first NHL contract after deciding to leave the University of Michigan, and will be must-see action for prospect watchers all around the league. The talented defenseman is a dynamic skater and brings some incredible offensive upside to the table. With five games left in the season for the Canucks, Hughes could actually earn himself a $25,000 bonus if he suits up in all of them according to CapFriendly.

Oliver Wahlstrom Signs Entry-Level Contract

March 28, 2019 at 1:47 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

It wasn’t clear what was the next step for Oliver Wahlstrom after informing Boston College that he would not return next season, but he has made another decision. The young forward has signed his entry-level contract with the New York Islanders, starting the deal in the 2019-20 season. Brett Cyrgalis of the New York Post reports that Wahlstrom is expected to report to the AHL on an amateur tryout.

Wahlstrom, 18, was selected 11th overall last June by the Islanders and eventually settled on BC after long and very public commitments to various other schools in the NCAA. He struggled when he got there though, scoring just 19 points in 36 points. There were rumors of him leaving midseason, but he’ll now finally get the chance to turn pro and start the next stage of his development.

It seems likely that the Islanders will take it slow, given the huge upside that Wahlstrom has shown in the past. A hockey star at a very young age, the talented forward possesses an incredible shot and offensive instincts but sometimes lacks the ability to create chances for himself. When he was picked there were immediate dreams of him finishing off countless passes from Mathew Barzal in the NHL, but Wahlstrom is still a long way away from that level.

Since he doesn’t turn 19 until June, Wahlstrom can actually see his entry-level contract slide once again in 2019-20 if he doesn’t play ten games in the NHL. That’s regardless of how many times he suits up in the minor leagues, meaning the Bridgeport Sound Tigers will probably be penciling in his name more often than not next season.
