Central Notes: Strome, Blais, Lindholm, Weber

March 5, 2019 at 8:44 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose 1 Comment

While the Blackhawks will undoubtedly look to extend winger Alex DeBrincat’s contract this summer when they can do so starting in July, John Dietz of the Daily Herald details the more challenging decision they’ll face with center Dylan Strome who is in a similar situation.  The soon-to-be 22-year-old has been quite productive since joining Chicago with 40 points in 42 games but his struggles in Arizona would also play a factor in negotiations as well.  Accordingly, it may make sense for both sides to hold off on pursuing an early extension with an eye on seeing if his success alongside DeBrincat extends over into next season and is sustainable.

Elsewhere in the Central Division:

  • The Blues have converted winger Sammy Blais’ recall from an emergency one to a regular one, using the first of their four non-emergency post-deadline call-ups, notes Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. With St. Louis heading out on their California road trip and David Perron’s uncertain injury situation (he has been skating with the team for a little while now but is not with the team), they’ve decided that having Blais around as insurance is the best move for the time being.
  • Par Lindholm told Postmedia’s Ken Wiebe that he gave strong consideration towards signing with Winnipeg last offseason, calling them a close second to Toronto who he ultimately signed with. As it turns out, he wound up with the Jets after all after being acquired late on trade deadline day.  The 27-year-old center will once again be an unrestricted free agent this summer and with only one goal and a dozen points in 62 games, he may be hard-pressed to beat his current $925K deal.
  • Predators defenseman Yannick Weber is dealing with an upper-body injury, the team announced (Twitter link) which resulted in him being a late scratch on Tuesday night. There’s no word on when the injury occurred as he suited up in their previous game against Minnesota while playing close to his season average in ice time.

Injury Updates: Green, Daley, Letang, Kings

March 5, 2019 at 7:11 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose 5 Comments

It has been a rough year for Red Wings defenseman Mike Green.  He missed the first three weeks of the season with a virus that was attacking his liver while also missing 13 games due to a lower-body injury.  Unfortunately for Green, the virus is back which will cause him to miss the next seven-to-ten days, the team announced.  Despite missing 22 games already, Green still leads Detroit in scoring from a defenseman with 26 points in 43 contests.

The Red Wings won’t need to make a corresponding roster move to take Green’s place, however, as veteran blueliner Trevor Daley will suit up tonight against Colorado after missing the last two games with an upper-body injury.  He has also had issues staying healthy this season and has only suited up in 38 of their 65 contests.

Other injury notes from around the league:

  • Penguins defenseman Kris Letang skated with teammates for the first time since suffering an upper-body injury just over a week ago, reports Jonathan Bombulie of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. However, there remains no firm timetable for his return.  Pittsburgh could certainly use their number one blueliner as they remain in a dogfight for a playoff spot in the tight Eastern Conference.  Fortunately for them, they got one defender back tonight as Brian Dumoulin returned after missing the past three games with a concussion.
  • The Kings are expected to have defenseman Alec Martinez available tonight against Montreal, notes Jon Rosen of LA Kings Insider. He has been out for nearly three weeks due to an upper-body injury.  Meanwhile, winger Austin Wagner is still listed as day-to-day but he’s unlikely to suit up on their current homestand which wraps up on Thursday night.

Snapshots: Oilers, Boqvist, Radulov

March 5, 2019 at 4:31 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 5 Comments

The Edmonton Oilers want to start GM interviews in the next two weeks according to CEO Bob Nicholson, who spoke to reporters at the front office meetings in Florida today. Nicholson admitted that he hasn’t yet asked for permission to speak with any currently employed executives, but will be looking into that in the near future after he has all the information. Vegas assistant GM Kelly McCrimmon, who was noted as a top candidate for both the Oilers and Seattle expansion job, will not be allowed to speak with other teams until after the season according to several reports including the latest Insider Trading panel.

On that panel insider Darren Dreger noted that the Oilers have narrowed their short list to somewhere around ten names, a group including McCrimmon, interim GM Keith Gretzky, Dave Nonis, Sean Burke, Mike Futa and Mark Hunter among others. The Oilers simply must get this hire right as they try to turn things around and take advantage of Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl’s prime.

  • The Chicago Blackhawks knew they were getting an incredible offensive talent in Adam Boqvist when they selected him eighth overall last June, but Scott Powers of The Athletic (subscription required) believes the young defenseman may benefit from another year in junior hockey in 2019-20. That belief is supported by a source who tells Powers that the Blackhawks are discussing keeping Boqvist in the OHL instead of moving him to the AHL next season. The 19-year old has 56 points in 50 games for the London Knights this year and is second among OHL defensemen in goals with 19. London is well known as an NHL development machine, and could very well give Boqvist some Memorial Cup experience this season.
  • The Dallas Stars won’t have one of their top offensive weapons in the lineup tonight as the team will take Alexander Radulov out despite him being healthy enough to play. Radulov was late to practice this morning and will be punished by missing a game, a pretty meaningful development for a team trying to hold on to a playoff spot in the Western Conference. Radulov has 51 points in 54 games this season but will have to hope his teammates can take down the New York Rangers without him.

Rule Recommendations From GM Meetings

March 5, 2019 at 3:10 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 3 Comments

The GM meetings in Florida this week have resulted in several rule change recommendations, as detailed by Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic on Twitter. The front office executives will suggest to the Competition Committee that a player who loses his helmet during play must immediately leave the ice surface or be penalized, as well as a change in faceoff alignment following a penalty call. The suggestion is to have the team who receives a power play choose which side the initial faceoff will be on in the offensive zone, potentially giving them a higher chance of winning it. Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports adds that the league is also expected to remove exception iv from Rule 15.5, changing where the initial power play faceoff will be following an icing on a delayed penalty.

The league also expressed an interest in making helmets mandatory in warm-up and having clocks on the boards in all 31 rinks. One-minute penalties in overtime, an idea put forward this week, did not receive enough support to be submitted to the Competition Committee.

Meetings like this often end in discussion over major rule changes, but it seems as though this year had very few “hot-button” issues to deal with. The league instead was interested in addressing smaller tweaks and minor safety issues. That has riled up fans and media around the league who believe the playoff structure should have been front and center at the meetings, which it apparently was not.

Brandon Sutter To Undergo Hernia Surgery

March 5, 2019 at 1:34 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

The Vancouver Canucks have lost Brandon Sutter for the rest of the season, after announcing the forward will undergo sports hernia surgery on his right side. He is expected to be out for six to eight weeks, which would rule him out from playing again in 2018-19 unless the Canucks make it deep in the playoffs. Sutter already underwent hernia surgery on his left side in 2015 and has missed nearly a month for the Canucks already, last suiting up on February 9th.

Sutter has been a disappointment since being selected 11th overall by the Carolina Hurricanes in 2007. The 30-year old forward now has just 260 points in his 683-game NHL career, and never even truly became the lock-down defensive center that some believed he could be. For the Canucks he has recorded just 37 goals in 188 games but still has two years remaining on his contract at an average annual value of $4.375MM. He’ll finish this season with just six points in 26 games.

While the team hasn’t expressed any indication as to their plans this summer, Sutter is an interesting player to watch as the Canucks prepare to compete next season. His full no-trade clause changes into just a 15-team list, while there is also some buyout potential with just two years left on his deal. Vancouver has three center spots locked up with Bo Horvat, Elias Pettersson and Jay Beagle, and may want to move on to a younger option for the fourth.

There is also the issue of his effectiveness next season even months removed from surgery, as hernia operations often have lingering effects on NHL players. If a buyout is considered at all, Sutter would have to be fully healthy.

Minnesota Wild Sign Connor Dewar

March 5, 2019 at 12:22 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 2 Comments

The Minnesota Wild have signed Connor Dewar to a three-year entry-level contract that will begin in the 2019-20 season. Dewar is currently playing with the Everett Silvertips of the CHL where he serves as captain.

Dewar, 19, was a third-round pick of the Wild last summer after going undrafted in his first year of eligibility. That draft pick was used because of his huge breakout season in 2017-18 when he scored 38 goals in 68 regular season games before leading the Silvertips to the WHL finals. He’s back this season as captain and has 75 points in 54 games, earning him this contract and a shot to play professional hockey next season.

It’s not guaranteed that Dewar will be heading to the Iowa Wild, but the undersized forward has shown exceptional talent this season even while dealing with minor injury and could get a taste of the minor leagues on an amateur tryout this spring. That’s only if the Silvertips don’t land a berth in the Memorial Cup though, which they very well could after an excellent season. Either way, the Wild will be focused on the development of another young talent that could give them some offensive punch in the years to come.

Jason Demers To Return To Arizona Lineup

March 5, 2019 at 11:56 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

He wasn’t expected to return this season and yet here he is. Jason Demers will be activated from injured reserve and join the Arizona Coyotes lineup for their game tonight against the Anaheim Ducks, his first NHL action since November 15th. Demers played just 18 games for the Coyotes before suffering a knee injury that at the time was expected to keep him out for the remainder of 2018-19.

Demers, 30, was acquired by the Coyotes prior to last season and ended up averaging more than 21 minutes a night through 69 games. The right-handed veteran has long put up positive possession statistics and can contribute offensive at even-strength and on the powerplay, giving the team a versatile option on the blue line. That versatility has been obviously lacking for much of this season while the team has dealt with injury after injury.

His return comes just as Jordan Oesterle will come out of the lineup with an upper-body injury, and will give the Coyotes a boost right when they need it most. The team is on a six-game winning streak and currently sits just two points behind the Minnesota Wild and Dallas Stars for the wild card spots in the Western Conference. In what has been an injury-ravaged season, the Coyotes seem to have a real chance to make the playoffs if they continue to show improvements down the stretch. Demers’ presence will be a welcome on one the ice tonight.

Michael Stone Sent To AHL On Conditioning Stint

March 5, 2019 at 11:50 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

After the Calgary Flames were embarrassed on home ice by the Toronto Maple Leafs last night, they got a bit of good news this morning. Michael Stone, who hasn’t played for the team since November, has been assigned to the minor leagues for a conditioning stint, the last step before he returns to the NHL lineup. Stone has suited up just 11 times this season.

The Flames are still in first place in the Pacific Division and second in the entire NHL, but have now lost two games in a row by a combined score of 10-4. While obviously an excellent team, their goaltender has been questions all season including last night when David Rittich was beat by a long, slow shot from Maple Leafs forward Tyler Ennis. Though there isn’t really anything the team can do now to address their goaltending situation, they can improve the defense by bringing Stone back into the mix.

While he’s not a game-changing option for them, Stone does provide another right-handed option and brings more experience than some of the team’s young options. Today at practice the team had Dalton Prout back on the right side of T.J. Brodie, a spot that Stone could potentially take over if he proves healthy at the minor league level. At the very least he will give the team more depth for what should be a long playoff run.

Toronto Maple Leafs Extend Garret Sparks

March 5, 2019 at 9:55 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Toronto Maple Leafs made a decision at the beginning of this season to make Garret Sparks their backup goaltender, and it appears as though that won’t change for now. The Maple Leafs have signed Sparks on a one-year extension that carries a salary of $750K. Sparks was set to become a restricted free agent with arbitration eligibility this summer after his current two-year $1.35MM contract expires.

Sparks, 25, was handed the full-time backup role when the Maple Leafs decided to put both Curtis McElhinney and Calvin Pickard on waivers at the beginning of the season. Both goaltenders were claimed leaving the team bereft of any depth at the position, and just a Frederik Andersen injury away from seeing Sparks in net on a regular basis. While Andersen did deal with a minor injury at one point, the Maple Leafs starting goaltender has been brilliant and is now tied with Marc Andre-Fleury for the league lead in wins with 32. Sparks meanwhile has played in just 14 games and carries a .902 save percentage.

That number has upset many fans, who point to Michael Hutchinson or the other available goaltenders as better options. Hutchinson was acquired during the year to give them some more experience in the minor leagues, but actually performed better than Sparks in his short stint in the NHL.

Still, the organization obviously believes that Sparks can be a positive for the organization. It certainly doesn’t hurt that when Kyle Dubas was still GM of the Toronto Marlies last season, Sparks was named Goaltender of the Year en route to a Calder Cup championship. He had an incredible .936 save percentage on the year in the AHL, not the first time he has shown outstanding ability in the minor leagues.

There is something different about being a backup in the NHL though, and Sparks has yet to really find his groove as a goaltender who only plays once every few weeks. Head coach Mike Babcock is notorious for only giving his second goaltender a start on the back half of a back-to-back situation, games that are already more difficult for the team to win because of fatigue.

This extension keeps Sparks in the organization for another year, but also sets him up to become an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2020. At that point he could try to find another opportunity where he can fight for a starting role, one that he’s certainly not going to get in Toronto while Andersen remains at the top of his game. This also doesn’t preclude the Maple Leafs from going out and adding another backup option to battle in training camp, though Sparks would need to clear waivers to be sent to the minor leagues.

Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet was first to report the contract on Twitter.

Minor Transactions: 03/05/19

March 5, 2019 at 9:05 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

It’s a busy night in the NHL with ten games on the schedule including an epic matchup between the Tampa Bay Lightning and Winnipeg Jets. The two teams are considered top contenders from each conference and very well may end up battling for the Stanley Cup down the road. As teams prepare for action tonight we’ll be right here keeping track of all the minor moves.

  • The Philadelphia Flyers have recalled Justin Bailey from the minor leagues, his second call-up since being acquired from the Buffalo Sabres in mid-January. Bailey, 23, played five games for the Flyers during that first recall but failed to score a single point.
  • Joshua Ho-Sang and Michael Dal Colle are back up for the New York Islanders under emergency conditions, likely meaning a pair of New York Islanders forwards are dealing with injury or illness. The pair of youngsters have been playing together in the minor leagues and still have plenty of potential.
  • Goaltender Collin Delia has been recalled under emergency conditions by the Chicago Blackhawks, and announced later on that Cam Ward will be out 7-10 days with a knee injury. Delia has played quite a bit for the Blackhawks this season and could potentially be a candidate to take over an NHL role next year.
  • The Ducks announced the recalls of center Sam Steel and defenseman Jacob Larsson from San Diego of the AHL.  Steel has had a productive rookie season with the Gulls while Larsson has seen action in 38 games with Anaheim this year while logging over 16 minutes per night of ice time.
