Washington Capitals Bring Jonas Siegenthaler Back From Switzerland

The Washington Capitals have decided to bring former second-round pick Jonas Siegenthaler back from Switzerland to join the Hershey Bears for the rest of the season. Siegenthaler had been playing with the Zurich Lions of the NLA this season, after splitting the year between them and Hershey last year. He signed an entry-level contract just days after being drafted in 2015.

Siegenthaler is a big, bruising defender that has been used by Zurich in a shutdown role since he was 17. His defensive acumen has never been in doubt, but as the NHL puts more and more focus on puck movement and offensive play from their blueliners he has fallen a bit behind the curve. Not an elite skater or passer, he could clearly help teams in their own end but will now have to learn how to make quick, effective breakouts in the North American game and build on his physical play. At 6’3, 230-lbs, he’s already easily big enough for the NHL but his game needs a lot of refinement in the minor leagues.

For the Capitals, who are likely losing both Karl Alzner and Kevin Shattenkirk to free agency and may have trouble fitting Dmitry Orlov and Nate Schmidt under the cap (and on the expansion draft list) long-term, defensemen like Siegenthaler will need to develop quickly in order to keep the system flowing upwards. Coming over to the AHL is a good step, and one that will let the organization keep closer tabs on his development.

Anaheim Ducks Sign Mitch Hults To Entry-Level Contract

The Anahiem Ducks have gotten in on the college free agent frenzy, inking Mitch Hults to a two-year deal. Hults will report to the San Diego Gulls on an amateur tryout for the remainder of this season, along with Austin Ortega, another NCAA standout. The pair will help San Diego in their playoff run, as the Gulls currently sit in second place in the Pacific division.

Hults has spent the last two seasons at Lake Superior State, where he broke out this year with 34 points in 38 games. The forward led the club in points while being one of only a handful of players that ended the season with a positive +/- rating. A player who looks like a classic late bloomer, Hults never stood out in the USHL in his draft years and only started finding offensive success as a 20-year old in 2014-15 with the Madison Capitols. Cutting down on undisciplined penalties was a big step forward for Hults this year, as he started using his speed—which is excellent—and skill more and more. He’ll try to continue that growth with the Bears for the rest of this year, before being a real threat for an NHL roster spot as soon as 2017-18.

Ortega on the other hand is a classic case of being overlooked because of his size, as he stands at a generously recorded 5’8″ 170-lbs. His offensive skill has never been in question and he showed it off this year at the University of Nebraska with 47 points in 38 games. With three straight 20-goal seasons in the NCAA ranks, Ortega has been able to find a way to limit his weaknesses while preying on some less skilled opponents. That will be much harder to do at the professional level, but the 22-year old has found success at every level and shouldn’t be doubted. He’ll look to earn an AHL deal for next year, and prove down the line that he can keep up with the more physical professional game.

 

Rochester Americans Sign Alex Kile To AHL Deal

The Rochester Americans—and thus the Buffalo Sabres—have signed Alex Kile to an AHL deal for 2017-18, and an amateur tryout for the rest of this season. Kile has spent the last four seasons at the University of Michigan, and was a very interesting name last spring after a huge junior season. He’ll look to try and regain that momentum from last year with a solid professional debut for the Americans.

Serving as the captain for the Michigan Wolverines, Kile had a very lackluster senior year in which he scored just 14 points in 28 games. The 22-year old winger was coming off a 34 point junior season that had scouts around the NHL paying attention, but failed to repeat on his offensive performance. To be fair to Kile the entire Michigan team struggled this season to a 13-19-3 record, and their leading scorer had just 21 points.

Standing 6’0″ 190-lbs, Kile was known for his excellent skating ability and improving shot, but wasn’t able to utilize either much this season after an ankle injury robbed him of three weeks in the middle of the year. The former linemate of both Dylan Larkin and Zach Hyman will now head to the AHL to try and rebuild his value and prove that an NHL future is still a possibility.

Snapshots: Graovac, Sproul, Stuart

The Minnesota Wild have sent Tyler Graovac back down the minors after playing the last three games with the club. After Jason Pominville was a healthy scratch last night against the Winnipeg Jets— a game which the Wild lost 5-4—he will likely figure back into the lineup tomorrow against the San Jose Sharks. Graovac has now played 52 games for the Wild this season, contributing nine points while skating just under ten minutes a game. The 23-year old will return to the Iowa Wild where he has ten points in twelve games, and wait for his next chance.

For Pominville, last night’s scratching was the first such occasion of his Minnesota career and came after being held scoreless in six of his last seven games. The winger had contracted the mumps disease last month and missed some time, and wasn’t very effective upon his return. In 67 games this season he does have 41 points, which is actually an improvement over his career-low (in a full season) of 36 last year. With a long playoff run upcoming, and two years left on his current contract, the Wild need the 34-year old to continue producing down the stretch.

  • Ryan Sproul still hasn’t decided whether his ACL injury will need surgery, as the Detroit Red Wings defender explained today. He will continue to rehab the knee for the next two weeks and have another examination before deciding whether he needs to go under the knife. Clearly frustrated, he spoke to reporters today about how this season has slipped away from him without accomplishing the one goal he had: prove he was ready for an NHL role. With only 28 games under his belt in his NHL career, he’ll try again next fall to become the solid defenseman the Red Wings were hoping for when they selected him 55th overall in 2011.
  • Though it seemed like Ben Chiarot could be the reason for the Winnipeg Jets recalling Nelson Nogier this morning, the defenseman took part in practice today and looks to be fine. Chiarot didn’t play in the last ten minutes of last night’s game, but it was Mark Stuart who was absent this morning. Head coach Paul Maurice told Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun that there are a “few moving parts” on defense for the Jets’ upcoming game against the Philadelphia Flyers. If Nogier does get into the lineup, it would be his NHL debut.

Sharks Sign Quinnipiac’s Tim Clifton

Monday: The Sharks have officially announced the signing.

Saturday: The San Jose Sharks have entered the college free agent mix, as TSN’s Frank Servalli reports that the team has agreed to an entry-level contract with Quinnipiac University forward Tim Clifton. It is a two-year, two-way deal for the 24-year-old undrafted center. With Quinnipiac eliminated from the ECAC conference tournament by Harvard last night and not in the mix for an at-large bid for the NCAA Tournament this year, Clifton will now likely head to San Jose to join the AHL Barracuda for the remainder of the season.

Clifton’s NHL signing may come as a surprise to some. One of the major catalysts in Quinnipiac’s run to the NCAA Championship last year, in which they lost for the second time in four years, Clifton’s numbers fell off significantly in his 2016-17 senior season. Clifton had amassed 43 points and a +27 rating in 39 games during his junior campaign, but followed it up this year with just 25 points and a -8 rating in the same amount of games. After having only a minor role in his first two year’s at Quinnipiac and a subpar final season, it appears that the Sharks are paying Clifton based on one season of high-end performance. Though the New Jersey native definitely has some potential, it seems likely that San Jose fans will have to wait some time to see if he develops into an NHL-caliber player.

It’s a low-risk investment for an organization that has found some recent success in the NCAA ranks. Ryan Carpenter, who has begun to carve out a role for himself in San Jose, was also an undrafted free agent who joined the Sharks out of Bowling Green State University in 2014, while rookie Danny O’Regan was skating with Boston University this time last year after being a late-round Sharks draft selection. Of course, the best college player in San Jose is none other than captain Joe Pavelski, who was a seventh-round pick of the Sharks in 2003 and played at the University of Wisconsin before becoming an NHL star. Clifton has a long way to go to be the next Pavelski, but could possibly become a Carpenter-type after a year or two in the AHL.

Penguins Notes: Crosby, Malkin, Rust

Sidney Crosby is this week’s second star in the NHL, after his sizzling hat trick on Sunday night. The Penguins captain broke 40 goals for just the second time in his illustrious career, while retaking the lead in the Rocket Richard race and tying Connor McDavid for the league-lead in point.

The 29-year old Crosby is doing most of his damage 5-on-5, leading the league in even strength goals with 28. His dominance comes in just the fourth year of his twelve-year, $104.4MM deal he signed in 2012. The contract sees him cause just an $8.7MM annual cap-hit, mostly because of the three extremely cheap seasons tacked on at the end. That means Pittsburgh will only have to pay a 35-year old Crosby $3MM in 2022-23, likely still an unbelievable bargain.

Markus Granlund To Undergo Wrist Surgery, Out Indefinitely

The Vancouver Canucks will see one of their forwards sit out the rest of the season as Markus Granlund will undergo wrist surgery to correct an ongoing issue. In their release, the Canucks say that it needs to happen now so that Granlund can have a full offseason of training to be ready for next season.

After losing to the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday night—a game in which Granlund skated over 21 minutes and recorded seven shots on goal—the Canucks fell 20 points behind them for third in the division and 16 out of the final wild card spot. While it’s been known for a while that Vancouver was out of the race, Saturday marked the sixth straight loss and really put a nail in their 2017 coffin.

Granlund had actually become one of Vancouver’s best players in just his third NHL season. The 23-year old has 19 goals and 32 points in 69 games and looks like an important building block going forward. Under contract for one more season at just $900K, he’ll be in line for a substantial raise in 2018-19 if he continues his current progression.

With Granlund out, it should actually strengthen the Canucks chances in the lottery for the top prospects in this year’s draft. Currently 27th in the league, they will likely have a chance to pick in the top five for the second year in a row, even with Vegas entering the league. Another top prospect would help the Canucks continue a rebuild that looks fairly successful after they sold assets at the deadline. They’ll now have to continue to work toward a long-term extension with Bo Horvat, and see what kind of an impact some of their young players can make down the stretch.

Nelson Nogier Recalled By Winnipeg Jets On Emergency Basis

The Winnipeg Jets have brought up Nelson Nogier on emergency recall, giving the 20-year old a chance at his NHL debut. The team will host Philadelphia tomorrow night, and are likely still without both Paul Postma and Jacob Trouba. As Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun reports, Ben Chiarot didn’t play for the last 10:57 of the third period, meaning he’s likely the one who has suffered an injury of some sort.

Nogier was drafted in the fourth round of the 2014 draft and proceeded to post two solid seasons of junior hockey before making his professional debut this season with the AHL’s Manitoba Moose. The Saskatoon native has 13 points in 53 games in the minors this season, playing as the youngest defender on the team.

Drafted as a defensive specialist, his offensive game has grown in the past few years to the point where he could make an impact at the NHL one day. A big-bodied, right-handed shot defender who can move the puck and contribute on both special teams is exactly what every team is looking for—every team except the Jets perhaps, when they’re at full strength. Though even the front office would likely agree he’s not quite ready for the NHL just yet, a little taste of what it’s like is often good for the development of prospects.

Morning Notes: Giroux, White, Tkachuk

If Philadelphia Flyers fans are wondering where this Claude Giroux has been all season—the captain has points in eight of his last eleven games—they might not be shocked to find out that he’s been playing injured. Marc Narducci of The Inquirer reports that despite telling media members that he was fully healthy prior to the start of the season, he has been anything but 100% this year. The hip that required surgery last spring has bothered him all year, restricting his ability to “try to make plays you used to make.”

Giroux only now is starting to feel like himself, and it’s showing on the score sheet. It might be coming just a little too late though, as the Flyers remain five points back of the Maple Leafs for the final playoff spot, despite having played one more game. There are just eleven contests left for Philadelphia, who sit 33-30-8 on the year.

  • Decision day is looming for the Ottawa Senators and prospect Colin White, according to Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Citizen. The first-round pick from 2015 has just finished his sophomore season with Boston College, and is looking to go pro. As Garrioch writes, Ottawa doesn’t want to sign him to an entry-level deal for this season and burn a year over the last few weeks. They’d rather go the more common route of an amateur tryout for the rest of the year, and start his ELC in 2017-18. They’ll likely come to some sort of an agreement soon, as it doesn’t seem like either side is expecting him to head back to BC next season. The 20-year old center had 33 points in 35 games this season, actually a slight step back from his production as a freshman. He is as blue-chip a prospect as the Senators have (right alongside Thomas Chabot), and they will carefully consider their options before agreeing to anything.
  • The hockey world was in a buzz this morning over the elbow of Matthew Tkachuk, after the Flames’ rookie sent it hard into the face of Drew Doughty in last night’s game. Doughty would drop to the ice immediately, while no penalty was assessed on the play. Tkachuk will receive a hearing with the league and though he has no official history of supplementary discipline, players around the league have come to expect things like this from him. As Doughty told Jon Rosen of FOX Sports after the game, “he’s a pretty dirty player, that kid. To be a rookie and play like that is a little surprising.” 

Buffalo Sabres Recall Casey Nelson, Brady Austin From AHL

It was clear they needed some reinforcements, and the Buffalo Sabres have received them. The team has recalled both Casey Nelson and Brady Austin from the Rochester Americans, according to Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News. The team recently lost both Taylor Fedun and Cody Franson, making it a quartet of injured defensemen when including Justin Falk and Dmitry Kulikov. They’ve decided to go in two interesting directions with the recalls of Nelson and Austin.

Expected to be next in line, Nelson been with the team on two other occasions this season, playing nine NHL games. The former NCAA signing made his NHL debut at the end of last season, after completing an outstanding three-year stint at Minnesota State University. In his rookie season with the Rochester Americans this year, Nelson has 13 points in 45 games and has had some trouble adapting to the speed of the professional game. He’ll get a chance to prove that he has made the necessary adjustments over the next few games.

Austin on the other hand will be making his NHL debut should he make it into a game. The seventh-round pick from 2012 has been a minor league soldier for the Sabres organization for the past three seasons and is likely being rewarded for all his hard work. While he’s not expected to make much of an impact at the NHL level, perhaps he can be one of those rare prospects that elevates his game even further on the bigger stage. A native of Bobcaygeon, Ontario, Austin is a big defender who isn’t afraid to drop the gloves and protect a teammate if he’s needed. He should at least infuse some nastiness into the Sabres lineup when (and if) he gets into a game.
