The Red Wings are learning the hard way that you cannot build a competitive roster through wingers. Tatar and Nyqvist, just like the vast majority of NHL wingers, are only as good as their centres.
Dylan Larkin is the closest thing to a top line centre the Wings have but he’s just 20 years old and his production has dropped off after a sold rookie year. Jury is still out on him and Zetterberg’s nearing the end of the line.
Simply put, the Wings failed to properly prepare for the inevitable decline and exit of players such as Lidstrom, Zetterberg and Datsyuk.
The team doesn’t need a full on Maple Leafs-style rebuild but a retooling is in order and they need to identify and acquire a top line centre or a potential top line centre to compete with Larkin. From there they need to try and fix what can only be described as a broken defense. That’ll be quite difficult with the large salary, long term deals committed to Green, Dekeyser, Ericsson and Kronwall.

There’s no need to bench players or fire the coach. This team is where they should be in the standings based on their talent. They will continue to flounder in the 6-10 area of the East until they rebuild or until they get much luckier at draft time. Benching players doesn’t make them more talented.

They need a GM that doesn’t require “luck” at draft time.
