Snapshots: Milano, Bergeron, Krejci, Officials
One way or another, Sonny Milano’s time in Columbus could be drawing to a close. The Athletic’s Aaron Portzline writes that the Blue Jackets are ready to move on from the talented, but inconsistent winger. Milano, 23, was a 2014 first-round pick who entered the pro ranks with high expectations. However, in the years since Milano has struggled to stick in Columbus. He played in just seven combined NHL games in his first two seasons and played in only eight games last year, with a 55-game 2017-18 campaign sandwiched in between. Yet, even in that season Milano had a hard time with consistency and work ethic, scoring in bunches for a total 22 points. It was a major step forward for the prospect, but wasn’t exactly a season that left the Blue Jackets with visions of grandeur. As such, his regression last season was far from a surprise. Portzline notes that while Milano has struggled, rookies Emil Bemstrom and Alexandre Texier have passed him up on the organizational depth chart. For the first time this season, Milano is no longer waiver exempt, but there doesn’t seem to be much room for him on the NHL roster. Portzline feels that on raw talent alone a team would be likely to take a chance on him via waivers. Unsurprisingly, he reports that Columbus would prefer to trade him rather than lose him on the wire. If they are successful, such a move would likely be occurring by the start of the regular season next week.
- While the Blue Jackets are anticipating the departure of Milano, the Bruins are anxiously awaiting the arrival of Patrice Bergeron. The team’s top center has been sidelined for much of training camp with a lingering groin injury, but Boston held out hope that he would be ready for the start of the regular season. After steadily increasing his participation in practice over the last week, the team announced that Bergeron is expected to see his first (and only) preseason action in Chicago on Saturday. This is very positive news for the Bruins, as many questioned whether Bergeron would even be ready to begin the real season, nevertheless healthy enough to play in an exhibition game. The timing could not be better either, as No. 2 center David Krejci suffered an injury in the team’s preseason contest on Monday night and he availability to begin the year is now in question. Head coach Bruce Cassidy does not believe the injury to be serious, but the team will take their time with Krejci. Boston is better prepared for the absence of a top-six center this year than in years past with Charlie Coyle in the fold, but it would be a tough start to the year if both Bergeron and Krejci were sidelined for the Bruins.
- After the NHL and the Officials’ Association agreed to terms on a new contract on Friday, TSN’s Pierre LeBrun reports that the officials have voted to ratify the proposed deal. The NHL owners must now do the same, although the vote is expected to be consistent. A new, four-year deal between the league and its on-ice officials will be formalized before the start of the season, avoiding any drama to take away from the beginning of a new campaign.

Minor Transactions: 09/24/19
Minor league training camps open this week and their NHL affiliates will be sending players down to compete for jobs in the AHL. With that in mind, there will likely be several more minor transactions coming across the wire. Like always, we’ll keep an eye on all the minor league, college and European moves right here:
- All the players from yesterday have cleared waivers and can be assigned to the minor leagues.
- The Toronto Maple Leafs have recalled Kasimir Kaskisuo, following their release of Michal Neuvirth earlier today. The team needed another goaltender in camp, but unless a waiver claim is made at some point it looks like the NHL backup job is now Michael Hutchinson‘s to lose. Kaskisuo is also fighting to show the organization what he can do, as two young goaltenders in Ian Scott and Joseph Woll are pushing for the AHL jobs.
- The San Jose Sharks have recalled eight players from the AHL, giving them some extra bodies for the last few preseason contests. Joachim Blichfeld, Ivan Chekhovich, Sasha Chmelevski, Nick DeSimone, Noah Gregor, Nikolai Knyzhov, Andrew Shortridge and Jeffrey Viel have all been brought back up for the time being.

Tampa Bay Planning To Waive Domingue, Condon
September 20: Waivers open for the 2019-20 season today, and according to Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports Domingue will be on them.
September 12: When the Tampa Bay Lightning signed Curtis McElhinney to a two-year, $2.6MM contract at the start of free agency, eyebrows were raised all around the league. The Lightning already had Louis Domingue in the organization and had given him a similar contract just a year prior. Domingue had played in 26 games for the Lightning in 2018-19 and had a 21-5 record, clearly good enough to keep the team afloat while Andrei Vasilevskiy dealt with injury. Still, they had brought in McElhinney to give them even more depth. When they then traded Ryan Callahan to the Ottawa Senators and took on Mike Condon‘s contract which still had $2.4MM on it, even more questions popped up. How many goaltenders were the Lightning going to start the season with?
Today, GM Julien BriseBois explained what the plan is to team reporter Caley Chelios. The Lightning will keep Condon and Domingue in a “controlled environment” throughout training camp to avoid injury, before placing them on waivers later this month and assigning them to the minor leagues. Moving both goaltenders to the minors would shave $1.075MM off of each cap hit, saving the Lightning some extremely valuable space. The two would then only total $1.4MM against the cap, giving BriseBois some extra room to sign Brayden Point and stay under the cap by the time the season begins.
That is, unless another team decides to claim or trade for them. Domingue is the much more likely candidate given his lower salary and recent success, and that was evident today. BriseBois told Chelios that a team even called this morning about the 27-year old goaltender, indicating some interest. Over a 122-game NHL career, Domingue has recorded a .907 save percentage but showed last season that he could at least hold down the job for a short stretch and keep a good team on the winning path.
Condon meanwhile played his way out of a job with the Senators and struggled all season with injury. He played in just three games last season including one at the AHL level and hasn’t been an effective NHL option since 2016-17. The 29-year old is likely too expensive for a waiver claim even if he is healthy, and it’s hard to see a team taking on his contract unless the Lightning include another asset.
