Todd McLellan

Pacific Notes: McLellan, Hill, Amadio

January 18, 2024 at 7:15 pm CDT | by Brennan McClain 15 Comments

In this week’s edition of TSN’s Insider Trading, one of the proposed questions centered around the possibility of the Los Angeles Kings parting ways with current head coach Todd McLellan. Hoping to compete for a Stanley Cup this season, the Kings have produced a 1-5-4 record since December 28th, which has led some to speculate that a change behind the bench could be on the horizon in Los Angeles.

Unlike most teams that have made an in-season coaching change this year, the Kings still find themselves within a playoff spot in the Pacific Division, but the gap has certainly tightened over the last few weeks. Keeping together much of the same core over the offseason and bringing in Pierre-Luc Dubois, it’s safe to say that Los Angeles is not meeting their expectations up to this point in the season.

One of the main drivers in the team’s current misfortune has been the offense, which has only averaged 2.3 goals per game in their last 10 contests. In the year, the Kings rank 14th in the NHL with 3.27 GF/G, which does not appear to be enough firepower to take down a team such as the Colorado Avalanche, Dallas Stars, or Vancouver Canucks. With little salary cap mobility and a coaching change seeming unlikely, the Kings will have to do their best to handle this downturn internally.

Other notes:

  • Another team in the Pacific Division that has dealt with some unfortunate play of late would be the Vegas Golden Knights. In their last 14 games, the Golden Knights have produced a 5-9-0 record, now falling well short of the first-place Canucks. Nevertheless, in some positive news for the organization, the head coach of the team, Bruce Cassidy, suggested that starting goaltender Adin Hill is back practicing and should participate in a game sooner rather than later (X Link). Getting Hill back into the lineup should give the team quite a bit of much-needed stability, as he produced a 10-2-2 record in 15 games before going down with an injury in mid-December.
  • Sticking in Vegas, Jesse Granger of The Athletic reported that forward Michael Amadio would miss the team’s game tonight against the New York Rangers with an upper-body injury. One of the most valuable depth players across the league this year, Amadio has scored six goals and 17 points in 43 games.

West Notes: Lizotte, Lindholm, Namestnikov

December 5, 2023 at 8:06 pm CDT | by Josh Cybulski Leave a Comment

Los Angeles Kings writer Zach Dooley reported today that Kings forward Blake Lizotte has progressed to a regular practice jersey today as he moves closer to the returning to the lineup. The 25-year-old missed his sixth straight game this evening but could return on Thursday night when the Kings take on the Montreal Canadiens. Kings head coach Todd McLellan told reporters today that the plan is to see how Lizotte feels after practice tomorrow before making any decisions on a potential return later this week.

Lizotte has been sidelined with an undisclosed injury he suffered in a game against the St. Louis Blues back on November 18th. He took a hard open-ice hit from Blues defenseman Robert Bortuzzo and immediately went to the bench and up the tunnel with the training staff. He did not return to the game.

In 16 games this season, the Lindstrom, Minnesota native has four goals and three assists and is +7.

In other West notes:

  • TSN’s Salim Nadim Valji is reporting that Calgary Flames center Elias Lindholm was back at practice today after missing yesterday’s practice due to an illness. All signs point to the 29-year-old dressing in the Flames game tonight against the Minnesota Wild as Calgary tries to get back to .500 after starting the season 2-7-1. Lindholm has played fine this season with seven goals and 10 assists in 24 games, but he has struggled to score goals with a shooting percentage of just 10.9%, well off his career average of 12.5%.
  • Winnipeg Jets analyst Mitchell Clinton is reporting that Winnipeg Jets forward Vladislav Namestnikov will join the team on their upcoming road trip but is unlikely to play in Thursday’s game against the Colorado Avalanche. The 31-year-old has missed the Jets’ last two games after suffering a lower-body injury during a puck battle with Darnell Nurse in the Jets’ 3-1 loss to the Edmonton Oilers last Thursday. Namestnikov signed a two-year deal with the Jets in the summer and has had a decent start to the season with two goals and nine assists in his first 22 games.

Los Angeles Kings Agree To Terms On Extension With Todd McLellan

October 5, 2023 at 7:39 pm CDT | by Josh Erickson Leave a Comment

7:39 p.m.: The Fourth Period’s Dave Pagnotta reports it’s a one-year deal for McLellan, keeping him behind the L.A. bench through 2024-25.

6:54 p.m.: The Los Angeles Kings are close to signing head coach Todd McLellan to an extension, reports Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman. The veteran head coach was entering the 2023-24 campaign on an expiring contract.

The move comes ahead of a pivotal season for the Kings, who have yet to win a playoff series exiting their retool/rebuild over the late 2010s. Stakes haven’t been this high in Los Angeles for quite some time, with immense pressure on the team to perform with Pierre-Luc Dubois added down the middle and youngsters like Quinton Byfield looking for a statement season.

McLellan took over behind the Kings bench in the summer of 2019 after he was fired midseason during the 2018-19 campaign by the Edmonton Oilers. That meant his first truly full season with the team didn’t come until 2021-22 – his first two campaigns in Hollywood were shortened due to COVID-19. He’s coached 290 games for the Kings over the past four seasons now, accomplishing a 141-115-34 record in the regular season and a 5-8 record in the playoffs over their last two defeats, which, ironically, came at the hands of the Oilers.

With the Kings making linear progress over the past three seasons, the organization evidently feels McLellan has earned the opportunity to see things through and guide the team deeper into the postseason. Since winning the Stanley Cup in 2014, Los Angeles has made the playoffs just four times and has yet to win a playoff series.

The 56-year-old has plenty of experience. He surpassed the 1,000 games coached mark in 2021-22 and now has a total of 1,096 regular season games of head coaching experience between the Kings, Oilers, and San Jose Sharks. McLellan’s 575 career wins rank 23rd in NHL history, but his teams have historically fallen flat in postseason play – he’s got a career record of 42-46 despite overseeing the dominant Sharks squads of the early 2010s.
