International Notes: Team Canada, Cracknell, Day

St. Louis Blues general manager Doug Armstrong will have his hands full for the first half of the 2024-25 NHL season. Armstrong recently took part in an interview with The Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun where the two spoke at length about Team Canada’s roster for the 4 Nations Faceoff in 2025 and the announcement that teams will need rosters in place by December 2nd, 2024.

The first six players of Canada’s roster were already announced on June 28th, 2024 as Sidney Crosby, Cale Makar, Nathan MacKinnon, Brad Marchand, Connor McDavid, and Brayden Point have already made the team. Canada ices the majority of players in the NHL (41.7% of opening night rosters in 2023-24) which makes Armstrong’s job in scouting that much more difficult in determining the next 17 players and three goaltenders in three months.

LeBrun adds that goaltending is the biggest question mark facing Team Canada as the team no longer has access to Carey Price, Martin Brodeur, or Roberto Luongo. Armstrong isn’t as worried about the goaltending situation for Canada as he said, “The only goalies to win a Stanley Cup over the last decade have been Russian or Canadian. So we’re in pretty good shape if you’re using that as a barometer“.

Other international notes:

  • Journeyman forward Adam Cracknell will take his talent overseas for the first time since the 2020-21 season as Slovakia’s HK Poprad announced a one-year contract for the veteran. Cracknell spent all last season with the AHL’s Henderson Silver Knights collecting 18 goals and 35 points in 53 games. He has 210 NHL games under his belt with the Blues, Columbus Blue Jackets, Vancouver Canucks, Edmonton Oilers, Dallas Stars, New York Rangers, and Anaheim Ducks but has not played in an NHL contest since the 2018-19 season.
  • Former top prospect Sean Day is heading overseas as HV71 of the SHL has announced a two-year deal for the defenseman. Day became the fourth player to be granted ’Exceptional Player Status’ by Hockey Canada behind John Tavares, Aaron Ekblad, and McDavid but floundered almost immediately upon joining the OHL’s Mississauga Steelheads in 2013-14. He was eventually drafted 81st overall by the Rangers in the 2016 NHL Draft and made his NHL debut with the Tampa Bay Lightning on December 28th, 2021.

Tampa Bay Lightning Make Several Roster Moves

01/08/24: The Lightning have now reassigned Thompson back to the Crunch. The 21-year-old made his NHL debut in Tampa’s 7-3 loss against the Boston Bruins on Saturday.

Skating as the Lightning’s seventh defenseman, Thompson received 11:39 time-on-ice in which he managed one shot on goal, two hits, and had a 32.59% expected goals share when on the ice according to Natural Stat Trick.

01/05/24: The Tampa Bay Lightning have announced that defensemen Emil Martinsen Lilleberg and Jack Thompson have been recalled from their AHL affiliate, the Syracuse Crunch, while Sean Day and Declan Carlile have been sent down.

Day and Carlile were recalled yesterday, in the aftermath of Mikhail Sergachev’s placement on long-term injured reserve. As has been a trend for Day, his recall allowed him to serve as a healthy-scratched spare blueliner, but he did not dress for the Lightning’s game. Day has been up and down from the Lightning roster frequently over the last few weeks, and the last game he’s actually played in was on December 20th.

Carlile, 23, actually did get to play and made his NHL debut last night. He skated in almost 11-and-a-half minutes of ice time in yesterday’s game, and while he didn’t end up scoring his first NHL point he did manage two blocked shots, a hit, and a plus-one rating.

Replacing Carlile on the roster (and potentially on Tampa Bay’s third pairing) is 21-year-old Thompson, a right-shot 2020 third-round pick. Thompson is in the midst of his sophomore pro campaign and has had a strong start to the year in Syracuse, scoring 20 points in 31 games. He could make his NHL debut for Tampa tomorrow in Boston.

Although he’s a left-shot blueliner and Carlile’s spot in the lineup was on the right side, there’s a chance that Martinsen Lilleberg makes his NHL debut tomorrow instead of Thompson. The 22-year-old Norwegian defenseman was a 2021 fourth-round pick of the Arizona Coyotes who spent the last two years of his career with IK Oskarshamn in the SHL.

The Lightning signed him this offseason and he’s now playing his first career season in North America. He has 12 points in 31 games alongside 45 penalty minutes for the Crunch.

Lightning Expected To Place Mikhail Sergachev On LTIR, Recall Sean Day, Declan Carlile

3:00 PM: The Tampa Bay Lightning are expected to move Mikhail Sergachev to long-term injured reserve.

8:30 AM: The Lightning recalled defensemen Sean Day and Declan Carlile from the AHL’s Syracuse Crunch on Thursday, a team release states. Today’s transaction comes after the Lightning were forced to play their last game, a 4-2 loss to the Jets on Tuesday, with 13 forwards and five defensemen due to an injury to Erik Černák and no salary cap space available for a corresponding recall.

Thus, the Lightning must have made a corresponding transaction to fit Day and Carlile on the active roster. It’s possible the team has transferred defenseman Mikhail Sergachev from standard injured reserve to long-term injured reserve, which would rule him out of the team’s next five games with a lower-body injury. He’s already missed six games and 15 days with the injury, which he sustained in the first period of a December 19 game against the Blues.

Day and Carlile now come up to the Lightning roster to provide reinforcements to a badly bruised blue line without two of its three best players in Černák and Sergachev. This isn’t new territory for Day, 25, who was recalled three times last month to serve as injury insurance but did not appear in a game. The one-time OHL exceptional status nod is in his fourth season with the Lightning organization and has made 17 appearances with Syracuse this year, recording eight assists and a +8 rating. He has not made an NHL appearance since logging a pair of games with the Lightning in the 2021-22 season.

For the 23-year-old Carlile, though, this is a career-first. Signed by the Lightning as an undrafted free agent after completing his junior season at Merrimack College in 2022, the Michigan-born defender earns his first in-season recall in the final year of his two-year, entry-level deal. It’s an important step en route to him potentially earning a qualifying offer at the end of this season and remaining in the Lightning organization.

The 2020 Hockey East All-Rookie Team nominee does his best work in transition, posting solid zone entry denial metrics at the collegiate and AHL levels. He was a monster two-way minutes-muncher for Syracuse last season, recording 24 points in 69 games throughout his first full pro season while posting a team-high +28 rating. His numbers this season (three goals, six assists, nine points, +8 rating in 31 games) aren’t quite as strong, but there’s still reason to believe NHL upside exists in Carlile’s game.

One of Day or Carlile will likely draw into the lineup in a third-pairing role alongside recent call-up Philippe Myers tonight when the Lightning visit the Wild. Day and Carlile are both left-shot defensemen.

Tampa Bay Lightning Recall Philippe Myers, Reassign Sean Day

The Tampa Bay Lightning have swapped seventh defensemen. They’ve reassigned Sean Day back to the AHL’s Syracuse Crunch, and recalled Philippe Myers to fill his spot on their roster.

Day has been on the NHL roster for the Lightning a few times this season, but he has not yet skated in an NHL game. He’s been the team’s seventh defenseman on a few occasions but hasn’t dressed for a game in the NHL since 2021-22.

Myers, on the other hand, has played in one game for the Lightning this season. Tampa Bay originally acquired the 26-year-old with the hope that he could carve out a consistent NHL role, but he didn’t do so and ultimately played in just 11 games at the NHL level.

He’s been in Syracuse for most of this season and has played a big role, combining both size and mobility for the Crunch. Standing six-foot-six, Myers gives the Lightning some more size and physicality at the seventh defenseman role compared to Day.

Minor Transactions: 12/27/23

After taking the past three days off with a 14-game schedule, the NHL gets back to action today. As such, many teams are adding to their roster today, undoing transactions made before their off days for the Christmas holiday.

  • One of those teams is the Blues, who recalled winger Mackenzie MacEachern from the AHL’s Springfield Thunderbirds this morning. After spending last season with the Hurricanes, playing in eight playoff games en route to an Eastern Conference Final appearance, MacEachern returned to the team that drafted him on a two-year deal worth $1.55MM in free agency. A one-way contract structure suggested the Blues envisioned him having a spot on their roster out of the gate. However, he ended up as one of their final cuts before the regular season began and cleared waivers before being assigned to Springfield. He scored four goals and added eight assists for 12 points in 22 games there before the Blues recalled him earlier this month. MacEachern played in five games on his initial recall, recording one assist and averaging 9:04 per game. The Blues then papered him down to Springfield on Christmas Eve. MacEachern will likely be in the lineup tonight against the Stars.
  • The Lightning recalled defenseman Sean Day from AHL Syracuse, marking the veteran pro’s third recall in the last week-and-a-half. Day, 25, has eight assists in 17 games with Syracuse this season, his fourth in the Lightning organization. The former OHL exceptional status grantee has gone 87 straight games without a goal in the minors, last lighting the lamp on April 8, 2022. He’s been rostered for four NHL games this month but has been a healthy scratch each time. Even with Mikhail Sergachev expected to remain out of the lineup tonight with a lower-body injury, Day will likely watch from the box as the Lightning take on the cross-state rival Panthers.
  • The Capitals brought young forwards Hendrix Lapierre and Ivan Miroshnichenko back up from AHL Hershey this morning. Lapierre, 21, and Miroshnichenko, 19, had appeared in each of Washington’s last three games before the holiday break and are expected to be linemates on a unit centered by Evgeny Kuznetsov tonight against the Rangers. Miroshnichenko, the 20th overall pick in 2022, is still looking for his first NHL point and has posted a -1 rating in 9:32 of his average ice time since his first career recall earlier this month. As NHL.com’s Tom Gulitti points out, the move suggests none of Washington’s three injured forwards – Sonny Milano, T.J. Oshie and Max Pacioretty – are ready to return for tonight’s game.
  • The Flyers recalled center Rhett Gardner from AHL Lehigh Valley after assigning him to the minors last Saturday. Gardner was rostered for the Flyers’ final three games before the holiday break but was a healthy scratch in all of them. The 27-year-old has yet to appear in a contest for Philadelphia after signing a two-year, two-way deal worth $825K in the minors and $1.5MM in the NHL in free agency and has just three goals and one assist in 21 games for Lehigh Valley this year.
  • Defenseman Grant Hutton was a participant at the Islanders’ morning skate Wednesday, suggesting the team has recalled him from AHL Bridgeport, per Newsday’s Andrew Gross. This is Hutton’s seventh recall since American Thanksgiving despite playing only two NHL contests. The Islanders have been keeping him in the minors as much as possible to extend his waiver-exempt clock, allowing them to keep him on the roster as their seventh defenseman on game days. Their ability to freely move him between leagues is coming to an end soon, though, as the 28-year-old can remain on the NHL roster for six more days until he requires waivers again to head to Bridgeport.
  • Former AHL All-Star forward Tanner Fritz has left the AHL’s Bridgeport Islanders, the club he has played almost all of his pro career with, to sign a two-year deal with the KHL’s Dinamo Minsk. Filling the forward spot opened by Fritz’s departure, Bridgeport recalled forward Jake Pivonka from their ECHL affiliate, the Worcester Railers. The Islanders originally signed Fritz as an undrafted college free agent out of Ohio State University, and he worked his way into the AHL by scoring 33 points in 43 games with the Islanders’ ECHL affiliate, the Kansas City Mavericks. Fritz ranks seventh all-time in points for Bridgeport, and will now head to a Minsk team that already boasts import talent such as Nick Merkley, Brett Ritchie, and Sam Anas. He’s going to attempt to aid Minsk’s offensive attack, a unit that has struggled this season as the team sits firmly outside of legitimate Gagarin Cup contention.
  • Former Florida Panthers prospect Thomas Schemitsch has signed a one-year deal with the KHL’s Kunlun Red Star. He’ll likely join Kunlun at the conclusion of the Spengler Cup, where he is currently on Team Canada’s roster. The 27-year-old stands six-foot-four, 205 pounds and will bring size as well as over 300 games of experience in a top pro league (the AHL) to the Red Star blueline. Schemitsch spent last season with the SHL’s Malmö Redhawks, scoring 14 points in 49 games on 18:37 time-on-ice per game.

Morning Notes: Kuraly, Day, MacEachern, Kovalchuk

Sean Kuraly is reportedly doing okay after suffering an abdominal injury that led him to collapse behind the Columbus Blue Jackets bench on Saturday night. The 30-year-old forward was transported to the local Grant Medical Center for further evaluation and avoided being admitted. Kuraly’s scary injury brought a premature end to the first period of the Blue Jackets and Toronto Maple Leafs matchup.

Kuraly has appeared in 35 games with Columbus this season, recording 11 points and 28 penalty minutes. The centerman is in his third season with the Blue Jackets, who signed him as an unrestricted free agent ahead of the 2021-22 campaign. Kuraly joined Columbus on a four-year, $10MM contract, making him the fourth-most expensive forward on the Blue Jackets roster, and the second-most expensive of all healthy forwards with Patrik Laine, Jack Roslovic, and Boone Jenner on injured reserve. Kuraly has appeared in 183 career games with the Blue Jackets, scoring 61 points, recording 157 penalty minutes, and setting a -28. This stat line combines with five seasons with the Boston Bruins to bring Kuraly’s career totals to 129 points and 291 penalty minutes in 453 games.

  • The Tampa Bay Lightning have sent Sean Day to the AHL’s Syracuse Crunch. Day was recalled to the NHL lineup on December 21st and failed to appear in any games with the Lightning. Day has only managed two NHL appearances in his career, both coming in the 2021-22 season. He failed to score in the pair of outings, recording a -2. Day has appeared in 17 AHL games this season, recording eight assists but still searching for his first goal of the year.
  • Mackenzie MacEachern has been sent back to the AHL after appearing in five games with the St. Louis Blues. They were MacEachern’s first NHL games of the season, with the 29-year-old winger scoring one assist. MacEachern has also managed 22 AHL games this year, netting 12 points and eight penalty minutes. MacEachern is in his second stint with the Blues, spending four years with the club earlier in his career before briefly joining the Carolina Hurricanes organization last year. MacEachern played in five postseason games as the Blues pursued their 2019 Stanley Cup win.
  • Hockey Hall of Fame hopeful Ilya Kovalchuk played in his first professional game since the 2020-21 season on Sunday, scoring an empty net goal to help lead Spartak Moskva over the Kunlun Red Stars. Kovalchuk most recently appeared with Omsk Avangard of the KHL, scoring 17 points in 16 games in 2020-21. The 40-year-old winger led a prolific NHL career, totaling 443 goals and 876 points in 926 games. Kovalchuk recorded 681 points in 594 games with the Atlanta Thrashers, a mark that ranks third all-time in Thrashers/Winnipeg Jets franchise scoring.

AHL Shuffle: Petersen, Day, Meyers

The Philadelphia Flyers have recalled netminder Cal Petersen back to their NHL roster, indicating that netminder Carter Hart isn’t quite ready to return and back up Samuel Ersson for the Flyers’ game tonight against the Nashville Predators. Petersen was the Flyers’ backup for their last game as well, though he has spent most of the year with the AHL’s Lehigh Valley Phantoms.

The former Los Angeles Kings $5MM man has played in 11 games for the Phantoms, going 4-6-1 with an .898 save percentage and 3.20 goals-against-average. Those numbers are certainly a decline for Petersen, though they are not entirely out of line with his 2022-23 season as he went 16-20-4 with a .904 save percentage and 2.88 goals-against-average last year.

Some other AHL “paper” transactions:

  • The Tampa Bay Lightning have recalled defenseman Sean Day from their AHL affiliate, the Syracuse Crunch. Day has been recalled to serve as the team’s seventh defenseman, which is a role he’s played relatively frequently over the last week or so. Day did play in the Crunch’s contest last night against the Laval Rocket, but otherwise, he has been on the NHL roster for a decent stretch this season. What he hasn’t done so far this year is dress for an NHL game, and he last played in the NHL in 2021-22.
  • The Colorado Avalanche sent forward Ben Meyers back down to the AHL after their most recent game, but today the team recalled him, making the move effectively a paperwork-only transaction. Meyers, 25, has been involved in numerous transactions of the sort so far in his young career. He’s played in four NHL games this year and 17 AHL contests, and has scored 13 points in 21 games across both levels combined.

Tampa Bay Lightning Reassign Sean Day

The Tampa Bay Lightning announced today that defenseman Sean Day has been reassigned to the team’s AHL affiliate, the Syracuse Crunch. In a corresponding move, the Crunch reassigned defenseman Zachary Massicotte to their ECHL affiliate, the Orlando Solar Bears.

Day was originally recalled on December 14th, as additional cover for the team as Victor Hedman dealt with an injury. But with Hedman now back, Day’s services on the Lightning’s NHL roster are no longer needed. Day did not dress for the Lightning’s one game that Hedman missed. Instead, Haydn Fleury slotted into the lineup and Day took Fleury’s spot in the press box as the team’s spare defenseman.

Hedman’s return to health and today’s subsequent reassignment to the AHL means Day’s most recent call-up will end without the opportunity to play in another NHL game. The 25-year-old defenseman has two games already on his resume and is undoubtedly hoping to receive more. It’s been a long journey towards the top of an NHL team’s minor-league defensive depth chart for Day, who was a rare “exceptional status” player in his junior hockey days.

Although Day was allowed to join the OHL in advance of his peers, his development stagnated somewhat with the Mississauga Steelheads, Kingston Frontenacs, and Windsor Spitfires. He earned a pro contract with the New York Rangers, the club that drafted him, but spent half of his rookie pro year in the ECHL. After spending the bulk of 2019-20 in the ECHL, Day joined the Syracuse Crunch and immediately made significant progress toward his NHL dream. He scored 40 points in 69 games for the Crunch in 2021-22, earning himself two NHL games.

Last season Day’s production fell all the way down to just 14 points in 63 games, though it has recovered somewhat this year. With this reassignment, Day will return from Tampa to resume his top-four role with the Crunch hoping to receive another call-up chance down the line.

As for Massicotte, Day’s call-up opportunity gave him the chance to play in the first AHL games of his season. The six-foot-four 22-year-old defenseman spent almost all of his rookie professional campaign in the ECHL with the Allen Americans, save for four games played with the Belleville Senators.

Massicotte played on the Crunch’s top pairing next to Philippe Myers for the team’s shutout victory over the Utica Comets two days ago, giving him some valuable exposure in the AHL. Just as Day returns to Syracuse with the hope of earning another call-up to Tampa, Massicotte will return to Orlando looking to earn another call-up to Syracuse.

Tampa Bay Lightning Re-Sign Sean Day

The Tampa Bay Lightning re-signed defenseman Sean Day to a one-year, two-way contract Monday, the team announced today.

Financial terms were not disclosed. The 25-year-old defender recorded 14 points in 63 games with the AHL’s Syracuse Crunch last season.

Day, who was granted exceptional status to enter the OHL as a 15-year-old, struggled for years to find his professional footing. The stability finally came in the Lightning organization, where Day posted back-to-back strong campaigns for the Crunch in 2020-21 and 2021-22, even earning a two-game NHL call-up in the latter season.

Things dried up for the 2016 third-round pick in 2022-23, however. Day went the entire campaign without scoring a goal and slipped down the Lightning organizational depth chart considerably, appearing in just one Calder Cup Playoffs game for Syracuse.

The one-year deal guarantees Day a spot in North American professional hockey for another season, but he’ll need to regain his 2021 form to earn him another NHL contract next summer.

A two-way defender by trade, Day was never able to put a complete game together after entering the OHL a season early. A rushed, high-intensity development process prohibited Day from taking the time he needed to grow his consistency and decision-making, dropping him from a highly-touted youngster to a middling prospect, even by the time he was drafted into the NHL seven years ago.

Without much organizational depth at the position, Day has more runway in Syracuse/Tampa Bay than most players in his situation to regain his confidence.
