Raffi Torres Retires

November 5, 2016 at 10:24 am CDT | by Mike Furlano 3 Comments

Much-maligned forward Raffi Torres has retired from the NHL, reports the Stouffville Sun Tribune’s Michael Hayakawa. The retirement went under the radar of more traditional hockey media, and with that a veteran’s career ends not with a bang but a whimper.

Torres ends his career with 137 G and 123A in 635 games with seven NHL teams. More telling is that he racked up 497 PIMs alongside thee fines and five suspensions. In total Torres missed over 70 games due to league discipline. Torres started his NHL career on the right foot by stringing together two 20+ goal campaigns with the Edmonton Oilers (after being traded by the NY Islanders), and was instrumental in the Oilers’ cinderella run to the 2006 Stanley Cup Finals. He then played a role in Vancouver’s Final run in 2010-11 before the Canucks also lost in seven games.

It was the latter part of Torres’s career, however, that fans and players will remember. Since 2010, Torres was suspended three times for illegal hits to Jordan Eberle, Marian Hossa, and Jakub Silfverberg, the last one carrying a 41-game penalty. Torres did not play again in the NHL after the Silfverberg suspension due partially to a knee injury.

Torres attempted to make a comeback this year by signing a PTO with the Carolina Hurricanes. He established that it was the NHL or bust, and that he would not continue playing if he did not make the big team out of camp. Unfortunately for Torres, however, his play did not warrant an NHL spot and he was released after just two games. When no other offers came, Torres slipped quietly into retirement.

Columbus Blue Jackets Sign Jarret Stoll To PTO

August 30, 2016 at 1:25 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

After the Calgary Flames added Chris Higgins and the Carolina Hurricanes added Raffi Torres on professional try-outs earlier today, the Columbus Blue Jackets have decided to get in on the action. The team has invited veteran Jarret Stoll to training camp on a PTO, as Aaron Portzline reports.

Stoll, 34, spent last season between the New York Rangers and Minnesota Wild contributing just nine points in 80 games. Once an effective scoring threat capable of putting up 40 points per season, Stoll hasn’t hit double digits in goals since 2010-11. Last season saw his minutes decreased to just over 12 a game, as he became a PK and faceoff specialist, hardly spending any time in the offensive zone.

Now, Stoll will try to hook on with a team in desperate need of cheap options to fill out their roster. The club is just $3.8MM under the cap, despite only having 18 players (twelve forwards and six defense) under NHL deals. While Zach Werenski, Pierre-Luc Dubois and Oliver Bjorkstrand all might make the team to provide some young inexpensive options, someone like Stoll could provide a cheap, veteran, bottom-six option for a team with so much tied up in terrible contracts.

Snapshots: Avs; Torres; NHL Rookies

August 23, 2016 at 6:29 pm CDT | by Mike Furlano Leave a Comment

News and notes from around the NHL:

  • The Colorado Avalanche have completed interviewing for their recent head coach vacancy, reports the Denver Post’s Mike Chambers, and expect to name a coach as early as Wednesday. Patrick Roy, the former head coach, abruptly quit this summer leaving Colorado with few options before training camp began. Two significant candidates have emerged, according to Terry Frei and Mike Chambers of the Denver Post: Kevin Dineen and Bob Boughner. Dineen is currently the Chicago Blackhawks Assistant Coach, and Bougher is the San Jose Sharks Assistant Coach. Bougher also played with Colorado GM Joe Sakic before the 2005 lockout for two seasons.
  • Raffi Torres told The Province writer John Matisz that he plans to retire if he does not make an NHL club. Raffi admitted that he does not have a back-up plan, and that it is “probably The Show or no.” Torres last held a job with the Toronto Maple Leafs last season, but never stepped on the ice. He last played in the 2015 preseason where he blindsided Jakob Silfverberg and garnered a 41-game suspension. Suspensions and league discipline have dogged Torres throughout his career, and it is unlikely a team takes a chance on the Toronto-native. Torres has been on numerous NHL rosters throughout his career, with stops on the Islanders, Oilers, Blue Jackets, Sabres, Canucks, Coyotes, Sharks, and Maple Leafs.
  • The NHLPA announced its roster for its annual NHLPA Rookie Showcase today and it has significant omissions. Only two players—Pierre-Luc Dubois and Matthew Tkachuk—are from the 2016 draft class. Auston Matthews and Patrik Laine are not participating, despite all top-three picks participating last year. Nevertheless the showcase isn’t a serious event. It functions more as a photo-op for Upper Deck and contains a end-of-showcase scrimmage.
