Atlantic Notes: Korpisalo, Pradel, AHL Contracts

July 5, 2025 at 10:28 am CDT | by Brian La Rose 2 Comments

After the season, Bruins goaltender Joonas Korpisalo indicated that he wasn’t comfortable with his playing time which was limited to just 27 games.  However, his agent Markus Lehto confirmed to RG’s Jimmy Murphy that no trade request has been submitted.  The 31-year-old posted a 2.90 GAA and a .893 SV% in 27 games last season and with Boston re-signing Michael DiPietro to a two-year, one-way deal earlier this week, it’s possible that the Bruins will want to give him a look at playing behind Jeremy Swayman next season.  Korpisalo has three years left on a contract that pays him $4MM per season with the Bruins only responsible for paying $3MM per year of that total with Ottawa responsible for the rest.  With a free agent goalie market that’s not particularly strong, it wouldn’t be shocking if teams were kicking the tires to see if the Bruins might move Korpisalo but as of now, the veteran netminder wants to stay.

Elsewhere in the Atlantic:

  • Red Wings prospect Michal Pradel is undecided about where he’ll play next season, notes Dennik Sport’s Matej Derak (Twitter link). The goaltender was the 75th pick in last month’s draft and can choose between returning to USHL Tri-City or moving on to WHL Regina.  Pradel had a 2.41 GAA and a .899 SV% in 14 games with Tri-City after joining them in January and at this point, college hockey is not an option as he still has a year of high school remaining.
  • Montreal’s farm team in Laval announced the signings of winger Xavier Simoneau, defensemen Joshua Jacobs and Darick Louis-Jean, and goaltender Hunter Jones to AHL contracts. Simoneau was a sixth-round pick by the Canadiens in 2021 but was non-tendered last month after notching 21 points in 58 games with the Rocket.  Jacobs had five points in 25 games with Laval in 2024-25 while Louis-Jean and Jones played exclusively in the ECHL last season.
  • After non-tendering him last month, the Senators are keeping forward Philippe Daoust in the organization as their farm team in Belleville announced that they’ve signed the forward to a one-year contract. The 23-year-old was a sixth-round pick by Ottawa in 2020 and spent four seasons in Belleville but never earned a chance at the NHL level.  In 52 games with Belleville last season, Daoust had six goals and 12 assists.

Minor Transactions: 10/19/23

October 19, 2023 at 6:58 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

With the ECHL starting up its season tonight, NHL and AHL teams have been shuffling players to that level in recent days.  Some of those recent moves are highlighted in our latest batch of minor transactions.

  • The Senators’ AHL affiliate announced the assignments of forward Philippe Daoust and defenceman Donovan Sebrango to ECHL Allen. Daoust was a sixth-round pick back in 2020 but was limited to just nine games last season due to injury.  He had seven points with Belleville but will get more time to work on his rehab at the ECHL level.  Meanwhile, Sebrango was acquired from Detroit as part of the Alex DeBrincat trade this summer and split last season between their AHL and ECHL affiliates.  Both players are entering the second year of their entry-level contracts.
  • Colorado’s AHL squad announced that they’ve sent goaltender Trent Miner, forward Ryan Sandelin, and defenseman Gianni Fairbrother to ECHL Utah. Miner posted a 3.04 GAA along with a .910 SV% in 37 games with the Grizzlies last season and is in the final season of his entry-level deal.  Sandelin wrapped up his college career last year with Minnesota State (Mankato), putting up 29 points in 38 games which helped him earn a minor league deal.  As for Fairbrother, the Avalanche acquired him as part of the Alex Newhook trade this summer but missed all of last season with a knee injury.  He’s also in the final season of his entry-level pact.
  • Former NHL blueliner Christian Jaros is on the move to the KHL as he has signed with Severstal Cherepovets, per a team release. The 27-year-old received a two-year deal.  Jaros has 94 career NHL games under his belts over parts of five seasons between Ottawa, San Jose, and New Jersey but opted to head overseas last season, seeing action with two separate KHL squads.

Ottawa Senators Sign Philippe Daoust

March 17, 2022 at 6:43 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

6:43 pm: Daoust’s three-year entry-level contract carries a $821,667 cap hit, per CapFriendly. Each year, he’ll see a $55,000 signing bonus, with a $750,000 base salary in 2022-23 and a $775,000 base salary in 2023-24 and 2024-25.

1:08 pm: The Ottawa Senators have signed prospect Philippe Daoust to a three-year entry-level contract that will start in 2022-23. The QMJHL forward currently plays with the Saint John Sea Dogs, where he will remain for the rest of this season. Senators general manager Pierre Dorion released a statement:

We’ve been very pleased with Philippe’s progress. He’s a highly skilled forward who displays good offensive instincts and creativity. With Saint John serving as Memorial Cup host this spring, we expect him to play an important role throughout the Sea Dogs’ post-season.

Daoust, 20, actually started this year with the Belleville Senators, playing 15 games at the AHL level before a trade brought his junior rights from the Moncton Wildcats to the Memorial Cup host Sea Dogs. In the 17 games he’s played since returning, Daoust has 11 goals and 22 points.

It’s an extremely uncommon path for a sixth-round pick, especially one that went completely undrafted in his first year of eligibility. But Daoust is an uncommon prospect, with even his junior career taking winding a very unusual road. From Barrie, Ontario, the young forward was completely passed over in the OHL draft and ended up playing in the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League for 2018-19. That earned some interest, which took him away from the OHL and into the QMJHL, where he signed with Moncton.

As fate would have it, that decision would end up being a very good one for Daoust, who instead of missing an entire development season like the other OHL prospects in 2020-21, was able to play in 21 games with Moncton and show his game had reached an entirely different level. Overlooked for years, Daoust now has an NHL contract in hand and a future in the Senators organization.
