Lightning, Lukas Svejkovsky Mutually Terminate Contract

October 30, 2024 at 1:06 pm CDT | by Josh Erickson Leave a Comment

Oct. 30: Svejkovsky cleared waivers, per Friedman. As a result, he’s assumedly terminated his contract.

Oct. 29: The Lightning placed forward Lukas Svejkovsky on unconditional waivers today, per Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet. Assuming he clears tomorrow, he’ll have his contract mutually terminated.

Svejkovsky, 22, is a new addition to the Lightning organization. A fourth-round pick of the Penguins in 2020, Tampa Bay acquired Svejkovsky from the Penguins for similarly buried depth forward Bennett MacArthur in late June.

Born in Tampa while his father, Jaroslav Svejkovský, was playing for the Lightning, Lukas has just one goal through four games with AHL Syracuse this season. He spent most of 2023-24 in the ECHL with the Penguins’ affiliate in Wheeling, where he impressed with 37 points in 30 games. However, he simply hasn’t managed to break through to the AHL level full-time – he had only four points in 19 games during an audition with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton last season.

While also a Czech national, Svejkovsky has spent his entire hockey career in North America. He played in the British Columbia prep and junior system before playing major junior hockey with the WHL’s Vancouver Giants, Medicine Hat Tigers and Seattle Thunderbirds from 2018 to 2022.

If he clears waivers, he’ll become an unrestricted free agent tomorrow and could sign with any NHL, AHL/ECHL, or European club. With Jaroslav now working as an assistant coach for the Canucks, there might be a home for him back in Vancouver somewhere in the organization, potentially a two-way deal with AHL Abbotsford.

Svejkovsky was in the final season of his entry-level contract. The Lightning already paid him a $92.5K signing bonus for this season, and he was earning a salary of $80K while on assignment to Syracuse.

Lightning Acquire Lukas Svejkovsky From Penguins

June 30, 2024 at 3:36 pm CDT | by Gabriel Foley Leave a Comment

The Tampa Bay Lightning and Pittsburgh Penguins have swapped depth forwards, with Pittsburgh receiving Bennett MacArthur and Tampa receiving Lukas Svejovsky (Twitter link).

MacArthur, 23, spent the season in the ECHL, totaling 32 points through 55 games. It was his second year in the league, after playing through his first pro season to the tune of 28 points in 53 games last year. Tampa signed MacArthur as an undrafted free agent in 2022, following the end of his season with the QMJHL’s Acadie-Bathurst Titan. MacArthur only played in parts of three seasons in the QMJHL, though he always found his way to strong scoring, recording 42 goals and 77 points in 54 games during his final year in the league. He’ll spend the final year of his entry-level contract pushing for a consistent role in the AHL, before setting his sights on the Penguins roster.

Meanwhile, Svejovsky, 22, was drafted by Pittsburgh in the fourth round of the 2020 NHL Draft, after a strong year in the WHL. He went on to play two more seasons in the WHL, potting 76 points in 57 games in his final year. Svejovsky totaled a stout 162 points in his 196 career WHL games – seeming like a potentially lucrative prospect for Pittsburgh when he signed his entry-level contract in 2022. But Svejovsky had a slow start in pros, with just 15 points in 47 AHL games last year followed by four points in 19 games this year. Those low totals contributed to Svejovsky’s move to the ECHL partway through this year. He was able to rediscover his spark in the third-tier pro league, scoring 37 points in 30 games. That should be enough to earn him a move back to the AHL, though he’ll have to keep up his scoring if he wants to push any higher.

Pittsburgh Penguins Sign Lukas Svejkovsky

April 5, 2022 at 1:10 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed another prospect, this time inking Lukas Svejkovsky to a three-year, entry-level contract. The deal will begin in 2022-23 and carries an average annual value of $859,167 at the NHL level. Svejkovsky currently plays with the Seattle Thunderbirds of the WHL.

Svejkovsky is a name that some NHL fans might be familiar with, given his father Jaroslav Svejkovsky played in 113 games, mostly for the Washington Capitals, after being the 17th overall pick in 1996. While dad had to deal with a league much less friendly to undersized scoring talents, Lukas will have a much better chance of making an impact, should his upside come anywhere close to his father’s.

Selected in the fourth round in 2020, Svejkovsky has put up 73 points in 55 games this season, splitting time between the Medicine Hat Tigers and Seattle. That midseason trade will allow the young forward to chase a WHL championship one last time before turning pro, as the 20-year-old will likely join the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins next season.
