Ludovic Waeber Signs With NL’s EHC Kloten

May 24, 2024 at 10:39 am CDT | by Josh Erickson Leave a Comment

Swiss netminder Ludovic Waeber is returning home after making a brief go of it in North America. He’s signed a two-year deal with EHC Kloten of the National League, the team confirmed Friday.

Waeber, 27, was a free-agent pickup by the Panthers last June, signing a one-year, two-way deal. While he’d been one of the better netminders in the NL for the past few seasons, he was never in contention to land an NHL spot over Spencer Knight or Anthony Stolarz and was solely expected to serve as injury depth.

Even on the farm, Waeber struggled, posting a .887 SV% in 15 games with AHL Charlotte. He was briefly assigned to the ECHL, where he allowed five goals on 16 shots in his lone outing with the Florida Everblades.

With Florida looking to shore up its goaltending depth at the minor-league level, Waeber was sent to the Penguins along with a conditional 2025 seventh-round pick in exchange for the more proven Magnus Hellberg, who has 26 games of NHL experience under his belt as well. Waeber demonstrated improvement after the swap with AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, logging 1.78 GAA and .919 SV% with one shutout in four appearances, but it wasn’t enough to keep him in the Penguins organization or in North America at all.

The Penguins will not retain Waeber’s rights moving forward, as he’ll be an unrestricted free agent on July 1. It’s likely the last we see of Waeber, who had a .918 SV% and 11 shutouts across 97 games with ZSC Lions in the three seasons prior to signing with the Panthers, on this side of the Atlantic.

Waeber is expected to slot into the starting role for Kloten next season, with 34-year-old Sandro Zurkirchen backing up. Unlike many other NL teams, Kloten doesn’t have anybody on the roster with NHL experience.

Penguins Trade Magnus Hellberg To Panthers

March 8, 2024 at 1:47 pm CDT | by Josh Erickson 4 Comments

The Penguins and Panthers have swapped minor-league goalies, per an official announcement. Ludovic Waeber is heading to Pittsburgh along with a conditional 2025 seventh-round pick, while Magnus Hellberg is heading to Florida.

Waeber is in his first season in North America, joining the Florida organization as an undrafted free agent after seven years in Switzerland’s National League. He’s off to a slower start in America, posting six wins and a .887 save percentage in 15 appearances with the AHL’s Charlotte Checkers. It’s a far cry form the strong performances he managed in Switzerland, where he recorded a save percentage above .910 in each of the last three seasons, including a .920 in 30 games during the 2021-22 season. Across 115 career games in the National League, Waeber managed 54 wins and a .915 save percentage. He also added 27 wins and a .918 in 55 appearances in the Swiss League, Switzerland’s second-tier league.

While Waeber is certainly still getting adjusted to North American hockey, he had lost his role in Charlotte, with his only game in the last month coming with the ECHL’s Florida Everblades. Waeber lost that game, allowing five goals on 21 shots. That performance may have been the final sign for Florida, who now swap him with the more-established Magnus Hellberg. Hellberg, 32, made his pro debut in the 2012-13 season, when he managed an impressive 22 wins and .924 save percentage in 39 games. He’s since totaled 210 games in the AHL, tallying 95 wins and a .914. He has alo garnered plenty of NHL experience, playing in 26 games across six seasons – though his results were limited to a much more modest eight wins and .890 save percentage. Hellberg also took a five-year break form North America, playing in the KHL with the Kunlun Red Stars, SKA St. Petersburg, and HK Sochi. He managed 169 games and a .927 save percentage in Russia.

Waeber certainly offers interesting potential, after dominating Switzerland’s top leagues for so long. But Florida has opted for the safer route, bringing in a veteran pro that could prove to be invaluable depth as the Panthers eye a long playoff run.

Florida Panthers Sign Ludovic Waeber

June 12, 2023 at 11:11 am CDT | by Josh Erickson Leave a Comment

The Florida Panthers are in crunch time, gearing up to keep their season alive tomorrow night in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final. The front office is already looking toward the future, however, signing goaltender Ludovic Waeber today to a one-year, entry-level contract that will commence in the 2023-24 season.

Waeber, a 26-year-old netminder from Fribourg, Switzerland, spent the 2022-23 season with the ZSC Lions in the Swiss National League. After being the team’s starter for the two seasons prior, he slipped to a backup role behind Czech netminder Simon Hrubec. He still did well in a reduced role, however, recording two shutouts, a .914 save percentage, and a 2.50 goals-against average.

With Hrubec signing an extension with ZSC for next season, it makes sense that Waeber would look for opportunities elsewhere.

Standing at 6-foot-1 and weighing 176 pounds, Waeber brings 115 games of NL experience to the Panthers, representing HC Fribourg-Gottéron from 2017 to 2020 and the ZSC Lions from 2020 to 2023. During the 2020-21 season, Waeber boasted a .918 save percentage, placing him fourth among NL goaltenders with at least 35 games played. What immediately jumps off the page on Waeber’s resume, though, is his .935 save percentage in 19 career NL postseason contests.

An undrafted free agent, Waeber represented Switzerland at the 2015 and 2016 Men’s World Juniors. Since then, he’s grown into one of the more highly-regarded goalies in the country, and he’ll look to make an impact professionally with Florida.

Likely destined for the AHL’s Charlotte Checkers in 2023-24, Waeber provides a solid AHL starter option should late-season hero Alex Lyon sign elsewhere as a pending unrestricted free agent.
