Kraken Hire Lane Lambert As Head Coach

After a long search, the Kraken have found their new bench boss.  The team announced that Lane Lambert has been hired as the third head coach in franchise history.  GM Jason Botterill released the following statement:

After conducting an extensive search, we’re thrilled to announce Lane as our new head coach. We cast a wide net for suitable candidates. What impressed us throughout the interview process was Lane’s strategy and vision for this team. He was an integral part of the Capitals winning the Cup and the Islanders advancing to two straight Eastern Conference finals. We have full confidence in Lane to lead this team behind the bench.

Lambert will be taking over behind the bench from Dan Bylsma who was let go after just one year.  He had previously replaced Dave Hakstol who served as the head coach for the franchise’s first three seasons.  The hire shouldn’t come as too much surprise as earlier this week, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported that Lambert had emerged as the frontrunner for the position.

This will be Lambert’s second stint leading a team.  The 60-year-old spent 127 games in charge of the Islanders but was let go partway through the 2023-24 season and replaced by Patrick Roy.  Over that time, the Isles put up a 61-46-20 record while making the playoffs in 2022-23 where they lost in the first round.

The playoff success Botterill alludes to in his statement came when Lambert wasn’t in the top job.  He spent four years with Washington as an assistant including 2018 when the Capitals won the Stanley Cup.  Lambert followed Barry Trotz to the Islanders the following year while receiving a promotion to associate coach; their two Eastern Conference Final appearances came while he was in that role.  This past season, Lambert was an associate coach with Toronto who now has an opening to fill on their staff.

Lambert will now be tasked with turning around a Kraken team that impressed considerably in its sophomore season when they amassed 100 points in the regular season but has struggled since, putting up 81 and 76 over the last two.  One area of focus will undoubtedly be on the back end as they went from allowing the eighth-fewest goals in 2023-24 to 24th in that category this season while their possession game took a big hit as well.

With this hiring, there are now just two head coach vacancies remaining across the NHL: Pittsburgh and Boston.  The belief is that the Penguins are looking to finalize a hire before the end of the month while the Bruins have been whittling down their shortlist in recent days as well so it may not be much longer before all 32 spots are spoken for.

Lane Lambert Emerging As Frontrunner For Kraken Coaching Vacancy

The Kraken are one of three teams yet to complete a head coaching change this offseason, alongside the Bruins and Penguins. They might be getting closer to a decision, though. Former Islanders bench boss Lane Lambert has emerged as Seattle’s preferred candidate after his recent interview with the team “went well,” Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet said on Monday’s 32 Thoughts podcast.

Lambert was part of a recent round of interviews in the state of Washington that also included Capitals assistant Mitch Love and Penguins assistant David Quinn. They were previously linked to Rick Tocchet before he accepted a five-year offer from the Flyers. David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period added that they completed an interview with Jeff Blashill before he was named the Blackhawks’ new head coach last week.

A name with previous head coaching experience is presumably desirable for the Kraken. They’re looking for more structured play from their entire skater group after the club’s possession numbers nosedived under Dan Bylsma last season, leading to his firing after one year behind the Seattle bench.

While Quinn fits that criteria too, Lambert’s year-and-a-half stint in New York as the lead man carries a more impressive resume in the areas they’re looking at. In his only full season behind the Islanders bench in 2022-23, Lambert elevated a club that missed the playoffs the year prior in the final season of Barry Trotz’s tenure by nine points in the standings, enough to get them back in the postseason. They did so with improved two-way play, still below-average defensively but boosting their scoring chance production enough to remain above water at 5-on-5.

Of course, the Islanders fired Lambert and replaced him with Patrick Roy midway through the 2023-24 season after a 19-15-11 start to the campaign. He spent last year in Toronto as Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube’s associate coach, managing the forward group that helped produce the league’s seventh-ranked offense.

Lambert would be the third head coach in the Kraken’s five-year franchise history if hired. Dave Hakstol served behind the bench for their first three seasons in the league before being fired and replaced with Bylsma last summer.

Kraken Linked To Lane Lambert, Mitch Love, David Quinn For Head Coach Opening

Outside of Rick Tocchet, who landed with the Flyers, there haven’t been many names firmly connected to the Kraken’s head coach vacancy. That changed today when TSN’s Darren Dreger reported they’ve received permission from the Maple Leafs to interview assistant coach Lane Lambert for their head coach role. They’ve also displayed interest in Capitals assistant Mitch Love and Penguins assistant David Quinn, Dreger adds.

It won’t be Lambert’s first go-around as a head coach if he wins the race. The 60-year-old was tabbed as the Isles’ bench boss ahead of the 2022-23 season after four years there as an associate coach. He lasted less than two full seasons there and was replaced by Patrick Roy near the midpoint of the 2023-24 campaign. After finishing the year without a job, he served as Craig Berube’s associate coach in Toronto this year.

Love and Quinn have both been tied to Pittsburgh’s head coach opening as well, with the former as the favorite by all indications. Love has spent the last two years in Washington under 2025 Jack Adams Award nominee Spencer Carbery, his first job on an NHL bench. The 40-year-old has made quick work of his jump up from the junior ranks to the NHL. In his brief two-year stop in the AHL as head coach of Calgary’s affiliate, he won Coach of the Year honors in both seasons.

Quinn is the most known commodity of the trio, something that may work against him in the end for a Seattle club looking to vault upward out of a pair of slightly sub-.500 finishes. Across stops with the Rangers and Sharks over the past six years, the 58-year-old had just a 137-185-50 (.435) record. He’s spent just one year with Pittsburgh, his lone campaign as an assistant in the NHL.

Seattle’s on the hunt for the third head coach in franchise history after they fired Dan Bylsma in April following just one season behind the bench. They’re one of the four active vacancies remaining, although that list is expected to drop to three soon with the Blackhawks on the verge of hiring Lightning assistant and former Red Wings head coach Jeff Blashill. Alongside Pittsburgh, the Bruins are also looking for a new coach.

Maple Leafs Add Lane Lambert To Coaching Staff

The Maple Leafs announced Wednesday that Lane Lambert has been added to incoming head coach Craig Berube’s staff as an associate. He’ll be replacing assistant Dean Chynoweth, who the team said won’t return next season.

TSN’s Darren Dreger reported earlier this week that Lambert would likely join Berube’s bench in Toronto. The 59-year-old spent parts of the last two seasons as the Islanders’ head coach before being fired in January. He’s long been a disciple of Barry Trotz, serving under him as an assistant or associate for the better part of the last 15 years during his coaching tenures with the Capitals, Isles and Preds, but that trend is officially broken with today’s move.

The Leafs didn’t specify Lambert’s responsibilities as an associate. He held the title under Trotz in New York for four seasons before being promoted to head coach after his departure in 2022. The nomenclature implies that he won’t be a direct replacement for Chynoweth in terms of job responsibilities. Chynoweth, 55, had been with the club for the past three seasons.

Berube still needs to finalize the rest of his staff. There’s already one opening created by former assistant Manny Malhotra, who departed the organization last month to take a minor-league head coaching job with the Canucks. The future of assistant coach Guy Boucher, who was in charge of their power play with a 4.8% success rate in their first-round loss to the Bruins, is also in question. Former Flames assistant Marc Savard, who parted ways with the club last month, is a strongly speculated candidate to join Berube’s staff after previously working with him during his days as head coach of the Blues.

Maple Leafs Notes: Lambert, Edmundson, Lyubushkin

Keep an eye on Lane Lambert as a name to join the Maple Leafs’ bench this offseason. The former Islanders bench boss is a candidate to land a role on new head coach Craig Berube’s staff in Toronto, Darren Dreger of TSN said Monday morning.

The Leafs have at least one vacancy to fill after assistant coach Manny Malhotra left to take a head coaching job with the Canucks’ AHL affiliate in Abbotsford. There’s a chance Berube could opt to make some other changes to the staff, including assistants Guy Boucher and Dean Chynoweth, later on. Their fourth assistant, Mike Van Ryn, is a logical choice to stay after working under Berube previously in St. Louis.

Lambert, 59, lasted about a year and a half during his first try as an NHL bench boss on Long Island. The team lost in the first round of the playoffs to the Hurricanes in his first season behind the bench, and he was fired in January after going 19-15-11 to start 2023-24. He and Berube haven’t been on the same staff in their coaching careers.

He joins former Blues and Flames assistant Marc Savard, who parted ways with Calgary last month, as names linked to the Leafs’ bench already this offseason.

Elsewhere in Leafland:

  • Toronto has expressed interest in retaining trade pickup Joel Edmundson, but the pending unrestricted free-agent defenseman seems intent on testing the market next month, reports David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period. The 30-year-old hasn’t ruled out a return to the Leafs but wants to see what else is out there. He struggled with injuries after being picked up from the Capitals the day before the deadline, going without a point and logging a +3 rating in nine regular-season games. He had a decent showing in postseason play, averaging 18:40 in their seven-game loss to the Bruins while adding an assist and a -1 rating. The aging blue liner won a Stanley Cup with Berube as a member of the Blues in 2019.
  • The Leafs appear less likely to retain another depth defenseman, Ilya Lyubushkin, with Pagnotta reporting extension discussions haven’t started with free agency less than a month away. General manager Brad Treliving sent a third-round pick to the Ducks to bring the Russian blue-liner back for his second stint in Toronto, and he was one of their better defensemen in the postseason with three assists and a +4 rating against Boston while riding shotgun alongside Morgan Rielly on their top pairing. The shutdown defender totaled eight assists and a -11 rating in 74 games split between Anaheim and Toronto this season.
