Washington Capitals Extend Bobby Nardella
The Washington Capitals have come to terms on a new deal with defenseman Bobby Nardella. CapFriendly reports that the two sides have agreed on a two-year extension that will keep the 25-year-old under contract through 2022-23, at which point he will be an unrestricted free agent. The contract carries the minimum NHL salary of $750K and is two-way this coming season, at $110K in the minors, before transitioning to one-way in year two.
If Nardella’s name does not immediately come to mind, it may be because he was under contract with Washington but playing in Sweden this past season. Nardella joined Djurgardens IF back in September, but rather than re-join the Capitals when training camps opened, the team allowed him to say overseas where he was thriving. Nardella recorded 33 points in 47 games this year in just his second professional season. He led Djurgardens in scoring and finished in the top five among SHL defenseman. He returns to North America having tasted what it is like to be an elite scoring defenseman in the pros and the Capitals hope to see that continue.
An undrafted free agent out of Notre Dame in 2019, Nardella is an undersized and offensive-minded blue liner, but has not let that limit him from making a difference in all three zones through his NCAA career and a season apiece in the AHL and SHL. Likely to return to the Hershey Bears to at least begin the 2021-22 season, Nardella could quickly earn a recall if he can show that his time in Sweden improved his game. The Capitals have no shortage of talented left-handed defense prospects such as Alexander Alexeyev, Martin Fehervary, and Lucas Johansen, but they could need immediate help at that area with Jonas Siegenthaler gone, Zdeno Chara heading for free agency or retirement, and Brenden Dillon a potential Expansion Draft casualty. Washington could be inclined to go with their most experienced option among that young group if they need defensive depth and that would be Nardella.

Kuznetsov (and teammate Ilya Samsonov) did not play last night for the Capitals due to disciplinary reasons and now finds himself in the COVID protocol. That means he could miss tomorrow’s rematch against the Rangers, though it is not clear how long he will be kept out at this point. He missed several weeks on the list earlier this year. As Stephen Whyno of the Associated Press points out, players on the taxi squad, which currently includes Samsonov, do not have to be listed on the public COVID protocol list, even if they are unavailable to the team.

The NHL can’t seem to keep the board clean, as even with Hayden coming off they will see the number grow to four. Svechnikov has been added for the Red Wings, who recently had Adam Erne also miss games on a short stint. Svechnikov played against Tampa Bay on Saturday, but for now, is unable to practice with the team. It is unclear if he will miss any game action as the Red Wings don’t play again until Friday.

It can’t really be called a win for the league, but at least there are no other Red Wings present on today’s list. Erne appeared yesterday after playing against the Blue Jackets the night before, but neither team has added any players today. Of note, Erne was also included in Detroit’s outbreak earlier in the season, so this stint could potentially be a false positive. No matter why he is in it, he won’t be available for the Red Wings tonight.

The NHL can’t quite get the COVID list down to zero, as Erne joins a few other players on Wednesday. The Red Wings forward played last night against the Blue Jackets, so the situation with both teams is one to monitor over the next few days. The 26-year-old has actually had a decent season, setting a new career-high in goals with 11 and seeing more ice time than he ever has.

The NHL will take days like this, with no one added and no one removed. Henrique hasn’t been joined by any other Ducks, while Leivo remains the only Flames player several days after his original addition.
As Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet writes, teams around the league were told that there will be serious consequences for any postseason COVID outbreaks that result from not following protocols. That could even include the forfeiture of a series, something that would be a disaster for everyone involved. Hopefully, nothing like that occurs as we move into the Stanley Cup playoffs in the coming weeks.

The Avalanche have completely cleared their board, meaning every player is technically available to them. It may still take some time for players to get up to speed, but it appears as though they’re in the clear in terms of their latest outbreak.
The only new name today so far is Henrique, who happened to play for the Ducks against the Golden Knights on Saturday. Hopefully, his appearance is not based on a positive test result and he can rejoin his teammates in the coming days.

No news is good news on this front as while no one came off, there were no newcomers to the list either.
