Calgary Flames To Acquire Brennan Othmann
Trading away Nazem Kadri wasn’t the only thing the Calgary Flames did before the deadline. According to Vince Z. Mercogliano of The Athletic, the Flames have acquired forward prospect Brennan Othmann from the New York Rangers. Mercogliano shared that prospect Jacob Battaglia is going to the Rangers.
Shortly after the start of the 2025-26 campaign, it was reported by Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman that New York was shopping Othmann from around the league. Othmann had seemingly become disgruntled; he failed to crack the Rangers roster out of training camp and was looking for a fresh start to continue his professional career.
It wasn’t all that long ago that Othmann was considered one of the better forward prospects in New York’s pipeline. The team selected him with the 16th overall pick of the 2021 NHL Draft. He tore it up with the OHL’s Flint Firebirds a year later, scoring 50 goals and 97 points in 66 games.
Unfortunately, none of that has translated to the NHL level; however, Othmann hasn’t received much opportunity either. Throughout the last three years, despite scoring 41 goals and 85 points in 120 games with the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack, Othmann has contributed only one goal and three points in 42 NHL contests, averaging 9:52 of ice time in a bottom-six role. He’ll now look to see if he can move his way up to the middle-six of a rebuilding Flames club.
Still, it’s not entirely a sunk cost for the Rangers. They have acquired another Firebird in Battaglia, who has enjoyed relative success in the OHL. Calgary selected Battaglia with the 62nd overall pick of the 2024 NHL Draft, and he matched Othmann’s OHL scoring output last season. In 259 OHL games, mostly with the Kingston Frontenacs, Battaglia has registered 104 goals and 225 points.
The Rangers will certainly have some scouts in the stands once the OHL playoffs kick off. The Firebirds have already clinched a spot for the postseason, and New York will be eager to see how their newly acquired prospect performs under postseason pressure.
CHL Transaction Roundup: Cootes, Alcos, Battaglia, Radkov
The trade deadlines in the three CHL leagues are fast approaching and there has been a significant uptick in transactions in recent days. Here’s a rundown of some recent moves around the various leagues involving NHL-drafted players.
- Canucks prospect Braeden Cootes is on the move as WHL Prince Albert announced that they’ve acquired him from Seattle in a 12-piece swap. Cootes, the 15th overall pick last June, got into three games with Vancouver to start the season before being sent back to the Thunderbirds where he was quite productive with 23 points in 17 games. Most recently, Cootes played for Canada at the World Juniors, collecting two goals in seven contests.
- Another Canucks youngster was dealt as WHL Kelowna picked up defenseman Parker Alcos from Edmonton, per a team release. The blueliner was a sixth-round pick in 2024 and has 14 points in 31 games so far this season. Vancouver has until June 1st to sign him or they’ll lose his rights, meaning this stretch run will be particularly important for Alcos.
- Flames 2024 second-rounder Jacob Battaglia has been acquired by OHL Flint, per a team release. The Firebirds are sending eight draft picks to Kingston in return for the forward. The 19-year-old has 14 goals and 13 assists in 36 games this season. Battaglia will be eligible to play full-time in the AHL next season, making him a particularly expensive rental player.
- QMJHL Saint John announced that they’ve acquired Canadiens prospect Arseni Radkov from Blainville-Boisbriand. The goaltender was a third-round pick last June, going 82nd overall and is in his first and only season at the junior level. He has a 3.01 GAA and a .894 SV% in 23 games so far this season. Radkov is committed to play at UMass next season.
Flames Sign Jacob Battaglia To Entry-Level Contract
The Flames have agreed to terms with one of their more promising prospects. The team announced (Twitter link) that they’ve signed winger Jacob Battaglia to a three-year, entry-level contract. The deal will carry an AAV of $931.7K and while not specified by the club, it will begin next season.
The 19-year-old was a late second-round pick last year, going 62nd overall after a promising sophomore season with OHL Kingston. After potting seven goals and 20 assists as a rookie, those numbers jumped to 31 and 34, respectively, in 67 outings in 2023-24.
This season, Battaglia was able to add to those totals once again. He finished up the campaign with 40 goals and 50 helpers in 68 games, good for a share of the team lead in scoring with Vegas prospect Tuomas Uronen. Battaglia had a pair of assists in yesterday’s playoff opener as well.
As Battaglia won’t turn 20 until next March, playing in the minors next season won’t be an option. He’ll have to make Calgary’s roster or be returned to Kingston. The latter scenario is much more likely and in that instance, his deal will slide and still have three years left on it heading into the 2026-27 campaign.
