Tucson Roadrunners Re-Sign Three Players

July 9, 2024 at 12:47 pm CDT | by Brennan McClain Leave a Comment

Craig Morgan of PHNX Sports reports the Tucson Roadrunners of the American Hockey League have brought back a trio of players for the 2024-25 AHL season. Goaltender Dylan Wells and forwards Ryan McGregor and Hunter Drew will all be back with the Roadrunners next year on one-year AHL contracts.

Wells and Drew are the only individuals of the trio that have made their NHL debut with Wells making one start in 2023 with the Chicago Blackhawks and Drew making his a year earlier with the Anaheim Ducks. The goaltender has almost a decade of experience at the professional level between the AHL and ECHL. Overall, Wells has produced a record of 26-23-7 in 60 AHL games throughout his career while posting a .898 save percentage and 3.20 goals against average. He will likely continue his role as backup goaltender for Tucson behind Matt Villalta.

Drew has become quite the enforcer in the minor leagues as he’s accrued 452 penalty minutes in 223 games split between the Roadrunners, San Diego Gulls, and Rockford IceHogs. He usually produces mildly on the offensive side of the puck but did register 10 goals for Tucson last season in a fine year for secondary/tertiary scoring.

McGregor, the former captain of the OHL’s Sarnia Sting, has become an effective bottom-six forward in Tucson. McGregor was originally drafted by the Maple Leafs in the sixth round of the 2017 NHL Draft but only suited up in four games for the Toronto Marlies before the organization decided not to keep him around. Since then, McGregor has scored 20 goals and 54 points for the Roadrunners in 156 games over the last four years.

Nashville Predators Sign Dylan Wells To PTO

August 31, 2023 at 4:52 pm CDT | by Ethan Hetu Leave a Comment

According to CapFriendly, the Nashville Predators have signed netminder Dylan Wells to a PTO.

Wells, 25, split last season between the Chicago Blackhawks and Dallas Stars organizations. He played in 17 AHL games for the Blackhawks’ affiliate, the Rockford IceHogs, and posted a .905 save percentage. He was included in the Blackhawks’ trade of Max Domi to Dallas, and ended up playing in three games for the Stars’ AHL affiliate in Cedar Park.

A former Edmonton Oilers prospect, Wells has mostly been an ECHL netminder since ending his major junior career with the OHL’s Peterborough Petes, with 78 career games played in the ECHL compared to 42 in the AHL. Wells got into one NHL game last season, saving 12 of 13 shots in 20 minutes of relief duty during an early November contest against the Winnipeg Jets.

By accepting this PTO with the Predators, Wells will give Nashville an additional netminder for training camp and the preseason. While the team currently has four goalies with clearly defined roles (Juuse Saros as NHL starter, Kevin Lankinen as NHL backup, Yaroslav Askarov as AHL number-one, Troy Grosenick as AHL number-two), the Milwaukee Admirals do not yet have a third goalie on their roster. Additionally, the Predators’ ECHL affiliate, the Atlanta Gladiators, have only one goalie rostered and he has just 10 games of pro experience.

So while Wells doesn’t have a clear path to a prominent role in Nashville, this PTO does give Wells a chance to show he’s worth keeping beyond the preseason in a depth role within the Predators’ organization.

Chicago Blackhawks Activate Petr Mrazek; Waive Dylan Wells

November 7, 2022 at 1:07 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Chicago Blackhawks have activated Petr Mrazek, while moving Alex Stalock to injured reserve. With a goaltender coming back, they have also placed the recently-signed Dylan Wells on waivers, according to Chris Johnston of NorthStar Bets.

Mrazek, 30, has played just three games for the Blackhawks this season, posting a .873 save percentage so far. That performance is actually even worse than his dreadful 2021-22 season with the Toronto Maple Leafs which led the team to trade away a draft pick so Chicago would take on the rest of his contract.

He’ll now presumably take over as the team’s starter, though Arvid Soderblom has been excellent through his four appearances, posting a .924. Those Blackhawks fans hoping for a true tank and the best chance at the first-overall pick might want Mrazek starting every game, given the younger netminder’s impressive performance. That is of course if Soderblom is even healthy enough to play, given he left his last start after two periods.

Stalock, meanwhile, is still in concussion protocol after taking a hard hit from Casey Cizikas (who received a suspension for the play) a few days ago. It is not clear when he will return to action but his IR placement is retroactive to November 1, meaning he can be activated at any time.

Things worked out pretty nicely for Wells, who earned an NHL deal out of the situation and his debut at the highest level. The 24-year-old entered the game in relief of Soderblom and stopped 12 of 13 shots in his NHL debut. His placement on waivers suggests that Soderblom will be okay but the team has not updated that situation yet.

Chicago Blackhawks Sign Dylan Wells

November 2, 2022 at 10:40 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

With Alex Stalock entering concussion protocol last night, the Chicago Blackhawks will be forced to add another goaltender. Scott Powers of The Athletic reports that it will be Dylan Wells, who was signed to an AHL contract. The Blackhawks have signed the young goaltender to a one-year, two-way contract worth $750K in the NHL and $80K in the AHL.

Petr Mrazek is still out with a groin injury, while the only other goaltender signed, Jaxson Stauber, was injured over the weekend. That means it will be Arvid Soderblom and Wells for the time being, at least until one of Stalock and Mrazek are able to return.

Despite a strong early start to the year, things are trending in the wrong (or right?) direction for the Blackhawks. Wells, 24, has never played in an NHL game, and has just 24 games of AHL experience under his belt. Most of his time as a professional has come in the ECHL, and even there he has struggled to put up consistently strong numbers.

With Seth Jones and Tyler Johnson both out, the goaltending situation a complete question mark, and the team now on a four-game losing streak, the Blackhawks could quickly be down at the bottom of the standings where most expected them to be this season.
