Connor Brown Confident Contract Will Be Signed Before Season Begins

August 10, 2017 at 4:34 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

TSN caught up with a handful of NHL players at Nazem Kadri’s fifth annual golf tournament supporting mental health in London, Ontario including Toronto Maple Leafs forward Connor Brown. Brown is without a contract still as one of the final restricted free agents of the offseason, but isn’t worried about the ongoing negotiations.

You’ve got to control what you can control, and go about your business everyday…I’m just leaving that to my agent and the team.

It’s obviously my first time going through something like this, and I don’t think it’s as stressful as the media would make it out to be. I’m very confident things will get sorted out by season time.

Brown also expressed his excitement about the Maple Leafs offseason, including the additions of Patrick Marleau and Ron Hainsey. The team will be relying on Brown as a secondary scoring option behind the big names, after he scored 20 goals as a rookie last season. The 23-year old is responsible defensively and was born and raised in Toronto, giving both sides a little more incentive to get a deal done.

  • Among the other players spoken to was Drew Doughty, who has known Kadri since they were young boys growing up in London. Doughty spoke about his frustration with the NHL’s Olympic decision, saying that fans won’t enjoy the Games as much without the top players in the world. Doughty should know, as he already has two Olympic gold medals under his belt from 2010 and 2014. A winner at basically every level, he’s also collected World Junior and World Cup gold to go along with his pair of Stanley Cup victories.

Morning Notes: Burkle, Gionta, Brown

July 13, 2017 at 9:27 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 4 Comments

The Pittsburgh Penguins have been one of the most successful sports franchises in the world the last decade, at least in terms of on-ice performance. Much of that has to do with bringing in Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, but some credit has to go to silent owner Ron Burkle, the financial rock behind Mario Lemieux’s ownership group. Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette sat down with Burkle for an incredibly fascinating—and incredibly rare—piece, one that stretches from Beverly Hills to Mar-a-Lago (with stops at the White House and a few Pittsburgh parades) and provides some insight into how the organization works. It’s a must-read for any hockey fan, but Penguins’ fanatics should click right away to learn more about their out-of-the-spotlight investor.

  • The Buffalo Sabres likely won’t bring back Brian Gionta next season, at least according to the man himself. Gionta told Luke Fox of Sportsnet that the door is almost shut, and even went so far as listing some potential captains. Gionta has held that role since coming to Buffalo in 2014, and actually had a fairly successful season last year with 15 goals and 35 points. That said, he’s now 38 and with a new direction for the club under GM Jason Botterill, it doesn’t seem like there is much of a fit. It will be interesting to see where Gionta, who hopes to play again next year, lands this summer. He still provides some value to a lineup as a secondary scoring threat and veteran presence that has led everywhere he’s been.
  • James Mirtle of The Athletic joined TSN 1150 this morning, and was asked about a potential Connor Brown contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Brown is the Leafs last remaining free agent, and is in line for a substantial raise after a 20-goal rookie season. Brown isn’t arbitration eligible, but Mirtle points to Tanner Pearson’s four-year $15MM contract as a possible comparable. With big contracts due for Auston Matthews, William Nylander and Mitch Marner in the next two years, along with a potential extension for Jake Gardiner, the Maple Leafs have to be careful with how much money they dole out for the other role players on the team.

Morning Notes: Lefebvre, Stalberg, Toronto

June 29, 2017 at 11:31 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

The Montreal Canadiens have hired Sylvain Lefebvre as the first coach of the Laval Rocket, their new AHL affiliate. It’s not much of a change, as Lefebvre has been the coach of Montreal’s affiliate for the past five years, in both Hamilton and St. John’s. He took the IceCaps to the playoffs last season for the first time in his coaching career, but was knocked out in the first round.

Lefebvre had a long NHL career with several clubs, suiting up for 945 games and scoring 184 points. He once hoisted the Stanley Cup as a member of the Colorado Avalanche, and recorded 18 points in 129 career playoff games. The Canadiens also named Larry Carriere as General Manager of the club, in addition to his responsibilities as assistant GM of Montreal.

  • Swiss Hockey News is reporting that there is NLA interest in Ottawa Senators free agent Viktor Stalberg, though it’s not clear if it is mutual. Stalberg has spent time in the SHL and KHL, and likely has interest from around the NHL as a depth option. We ranked Stalberg #45 on our list of the Top 50 Free Agents, expecting him to sign a one-year deal worth $900K. If the Swiss league is offering more than that, perhaps he will bolt for greener pastures.
  • David Alter of The Athletic examines the RFA cases of Maple Leafs forwards Connor Brown and Zach Hyman, explaining that both get high marks from Toronto management. With contract extensions due in the next year for William Nylander, Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner, the Maple Leafs have to be very careful with how they spend their money, especially on their fringe depth. While Hyman and Brown look to be excellent pieces for Toronto, they may be similar to the players Pittsburgh and Chicago have had to watch move on over the years after handing out multiple top contracts.

Atlantic Notes: Maple Leafs, Radulov, Schaller

March 31, 2017 at 5:38 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

While it appears that the Maple Leafs are close to finalizing a seven year, $31.5MM extension with defenseman Nikita Zaitsev, it doesn’t appear that there are any talks ongoing with other pending restricted free agents, TSN’s Bob McKenzie relayed on a radio appearance with TSN 1050.  Wingers Connor Brown and Zach Hyman are Toronto’s other prominent restricted free agents but McKenzie noted that GM Lou Lamoriello typically has tended to stay away from mid-season extensions so the fact nothing is currently happening there shouldn’t come as a surprise:

“I think historically – I wouldn’t say it’s a hard and fast rule – but historically the GM, Lou, if I remember correctly, doesn’t do a lot of mid-season deals. It’s a little unusual.”

Brown is having himself a nice rookie season with 19 goals (fifth most on the team) and 35 points while playing in all 76 games.  As for Hyman, his point total isn’t as high (28) but has been a strong complementary player in their top six.  Unlike Brown, Hyman is also eligible for arbitration following the season.  The Leafs have the financial flexibility to give each a long-term if they so desire as they have just under $57MM committed to 18 players for next season (a figure that does not include any potential bonus overage from this season).

Other notes from the Atlantic:

  • While there had been some discussion on a potential contract extension earlier this season, no formal offer was presented from the Canadiens to right winger Alexander Radulov, reports Sportsnet’s Eric Engels. Radulov also once again vehemently denied the report from two weeks ago that suggested he was seeking a max-term eight year contract.  The Russian winger has made a strong impression on his one year deal signed back in July and while he may not get eight years, he’s still likely to get a long-term contract in what’s shaping up to be a light free agent market this summer.
  • Not only will the Bruins be without left winger Frank Vatrano for both games this weekend, they will also still be without left winger Tim Schaller for the next two games, notes Anthony Gulizia of the Boston Globe. Schaller had been cleared for contact on Thursday and the belief was that he was close to returning but he didn’t take part in practice today.  Head coach Bruce Cassidy isn’t sure when Schaller will be ready to return.
