Red Wings Re-Sign Albert Johansson To Two-Year Deal
The Red Wings announced Monday they’ve signed defenseman Albert Johansson to a two-year, $2.25MM contract worth $1.125MM per season. He was set to be an RFA tomorrow. PuckPedia reports he’ll earn $1.1MM base salary in 2025-26 and $1.15MM in 2026-27, giving him a $1.15MM qualifying offer as an RFA upon expiry in 2027.
Detroit was essentially forced into giving Johansson, a 2019 second-round pick, a roster spot this season to avoid the risk of losing him on waivers. This past season was his third in North America, spending all of 2022-23 and 2023-24 on assignment to AHL Grand Rapids. After posting 36 points in 119 games there, the Wings deemed the mobile Swede’s game valuable enough to warrant an NHL audition.
Johansson ended up getting plenty of reps as the Wings rotated him in with struggling veterans like Erik Gustafsson, Justin Holl, and Jeff Petry. The 6’0″ lefty made 61 appearances in his rookie season, scoring three goals and nine points with a -11 rating while averaging 16:22 per game. His possession impacts raise some cause for concern, combined with that rating. Despite seeing semi-advantageous offensive deployment at even strength, Detroit only controlled 48.0% of shot attempts and 45.5% of expected goals with Johansson on the ice.
He’s still only 24 with room to grow, though. Assuming the Wings add at least one name on the blue line, he’ll continue to serve as a No. 6/7 option next season at an affordable price tag. If he can really force his way ahead of Gustafsson and Holl on the depth chart, he might be able to force a waiver placement for one of the vets. Detroit has done so successfully before with Holl, who still carries a $3.4MM cap hit through next season.
It appears to be a fair contract for both the player and the team, at least. Despite the lack of scoring and strong possession metrics, Johansson’s usage alone earned him a bump on his previous league-minimum salary. Still, if he doesn’t take a significant step forward in 2025-26, there’s no legitimate risk on the Red Wings’ side.
Red Wings Recall Justin Holl, Jeff Petry Out Day-To-Day
Oct. 12: According to a team announcement, the Red Wings officially summoned Holl from AHL Grand Rapids this morning.
Oct. 11: The Detroit Red Wings are expected to recall defender Justin Holl from the minor leagues as Jeff Petry (upper-body) deals with a day-to-day injury, shares Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press. Petry left the team’s Thursday night game partway through the second period, though it wasn’t clear when he sustained the injury. He recorded one shot, one hit, and a -1 in nine minutes of ice time. At the least, he is expected to miss Detroit’s Saturday game.
This move gives Holl another chance at earning a role with the Red Wings after failing to make the team out of training camp. That resulted in Holl being placed on waivers and sent to the minor leagues for the first time since the 2017-18 season when he played an integral role on the Calder Cup Championship-winning Toronto Marlies. Holl used that season to spring into the NHL, grabbing onto the seventh-defender role for the Maple Leafs in 2018-19 and earning an everyday role in 2019-20.
He’d record 285 games across six seasons with the Leafs – recording 11 goals, 82 points, and 150 penalty minutes. That wasn’t enough to hang onto his spot amid Toronto’s blue-line flux last summer, leading Holl to sign a three-year, $10.2MM deal with the Red Wings in 2023. He worked into 38 games with Detroit last season, netting five assists and 22 penalty minutes but failing to score. That poor performance foreshadowed the 32-year-old’s downfall, and he now finds himself grappling for any NHL minutes just over a year after signing his multi-year deal.
This injury doesn’t guarantee Holl’s path to a role. Wings head coach Derek Lalonde adds that the team is considering utilizing seven defenders – including Albert Johansson – until Petry returns. Johansson managed 21 points in 66 AHL games last season while emerging as a capable defender with an effective reach on his side of the red line. He survived Detroit’s training camp cuts and would be making his NHL debut, should Lalonde choose to deploy him.
Red Wings Sign Albert Johansson To Two-Way Extension
Defense prospect Albert Johansson is sticking in Motown as the Red Wings announced a one-year, two-way contract extension for the left-shot blue liner. PuckPedia reports that the deal pays $775K in the NHL, $90K in the minors, and has a guarantee of $110K.
While yet to make his NHL debut, the 2019 second-round pick is a strong candidate to make the opening night roster next season. That’s because he’s no longer waiver-exempt, and Detroit stands a high risk of losing him for nothing if they expose him to the rest of the league during preseason to send him back to AHL Grand Rapids.
Grand Rapids is where the Swedish defender has spent the entirety of the last two seasons. There, the promising two-way defender has put up solid numbers, totaling 11 goals, 25 assists, 36 points, 84 PIMs, and an even rating in 119 games. It wasn’t his first taste of professional hockey, though. Johansson played the majority of the preceding three seasons in the Swedish Hockey League with Färjestad BK, where he fared well against primarily older competition with 57 points and a +10 rating in 141 games. He won a league title with Färjestad in 2022 before coming over to the Wings.
While likely not a first-unit power-play quarterback at the NHL level, Johansson is extremely cerebral with the puck and has the skating ability and hands to match. He’s solid at puck retrievals and keeping play out of his own end, remaining projectable as a second or third-pair NHL defenseman with solid possession numbers and some special teams upside.
The native of Karlstad, Sweden, was slated for RFA status this summer, although he wasn’t eligible for salary arbitration. That will change next year after one more season of professional experience.
