Philadelphia Flyers Will Not Re-Sign Manning, Oduya, Read

The Philadelphia Flyers face a long offseason after being eliminated from the first round of the playoffs, but GM Ron Hextall has already made some key decisions. Speaking with media today, he made it clear that Matt Read, Johnny Oduya and Brandon Manning would not be re-signed by the club. The team’s other unrestricted free agent, Valtteri Filppula, is still being considered for a new deal.

Hextall, according to John Boruk of NBC Sports Philadelphia, also doesn’t plan on buying out Jori Lehtera at the moment and will bring back the same coaching staff.

None of the three players set to hit the open market should come as much of a surprise, after their play declined rapidly the last few years. Read, who was one of the most impactful college free agents of the last decade, was dragged down by a hefty $3.65MM cap hit and spent most of this season in the minor leagues. After scoring 24 goals as a rookie in 2011-12, he recorded just 30 over the length of his latest four-year $14.5MM contract extension. For a much smaller price, someone around the league could take a chance on him as a bottom-six player, but he’ll hit free agency at age-32 and could have to settle for a two-way deal.

Oduya, claimed off waivers just before the trade deadline, played just a single game for the Flyers this season. He battled injury and inconsistency this season in both Ottawa and Philadelphia, and will be 37 when next season begins. There may not be many suitors for him, though his solid history may get him a look somewhere as a depth defender.

Manning is perhaps the most interesting, after setting a career-high with 19 points this season. The 27-year old defenseman has serious warts to his game, but regularly posts solid possession numbers and will likely demand a relatively low price tag. He could be a sneaky pickup for a team in the league looking for some help on the blue line, though no one should consider him an answer to top-4 struggles.

The Pittsburgh Penguins will face the Washington Capitals in round two once again, but will open the series without two key forwards. Evgeni Malkin and Carl Hagelin have both already been ruled out for game 1, with the latter not even making the trip to Washington with the team.

This is the exact reason that the Penguins went out and added players like Derick Brassard and Riley Sheahan during the year, strengthening their squad down the middle for inevitable playoff injuries. Malkin’s absence is especially lucky for the Capitals, who he has dominated throughout his career. In 40 regular season games against Washington Malkin has 18 goals and 57 points, and has registered 19 points in 20 career playoff games between the two.

  • The Minnesota Wild are looking for a new GM, but it’s not one to start a rebuild. With that in mind, Chad Graff of The Athletic (subscription required) examined the potential candidates for the job, even naming a favorite in Paul Fenton. The Nashville Predators assistant GM has been linked to several head jobs over the last few years, and according to Graff even interviewed for the Minnesota job before Fletcher was originally hired.
  • The Vancouver Canucks will likely not sign Cole Candella to an entry-level contract according to Rick Dhaliwal of News 1130. The 20-year old defenseman was selected in the fifth round two years ago, but could end up re-entering the draft should he go unsigned by June 1st. Though he led the Sudbury Wolves blue line in scoring this season with 33 points, he’ll have to look for his next opportunity elsewhere.

Pittsburgh Penguins Sign Linus Olund To Entry-Level Contract

The Pittsburgh Penguins have added another prospect to the organization, signing Linus Olund to a three-year entry-level contract. Olund will report to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on an amateur tryout, and start his ELC next season.

Olund went undrafted in his first two years of eligibility—despite being ranked the 70th best international skater in 2015—before being selected in the fifth round last June. In 51 games this season in the SHL he recorded 23 points, but is known for his solid two-way ability. A penalty killer with some offensive upside, he’s another late round pick who could make an impact in the Pittsburgh system.

Though he’ll join the AHL Penguins right away, his first taste of professional hockey in North America may have to wait until next season. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton is on the brink of elimination in their first round matchup again the Charlotte Checkers, down two games to none. The third game of the series is tomorrow, and it would be surprising to see Olund inserted into the lineup right away. Instead, he’ll likely have to make an impact in training camp in the fall.

The NHL is expected to wait on the result of Game Seven tomorrow night between the Boston Bruins and Toronto Maple Leafs before announcing a full schedule for the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs. However, they have at least put an end to the wait on the dates and times of the series openers. No one is more relieved than the Vegas Golden Knights, who have already been inactive for a week after sweeping the Los Angeles Kings. The Knights will host the San Jose Sharks, also fresh off a sweep of the Anaheim Ducks, at 10 PM ET on Thursday, April 26th. The second round will kick off earlier that evening with the third-straight postseason collision between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals. With their Metropolitan Division rivals out of the way, that series will get underway in Washington at 7 PM ET on Thursday. Friday night, the 27th, will feature the much-anticipated match-up between the Nashville Predators and Winnipeg Jets, the top two teams in the NHL in the regular season. That series starts in Nashville at 8 PM ET on Friday. Finally, the Tampa Bay Lightning await the winner of Bruins-Maple Leafs and the decision also affects when their second round begins on Saturday, the 28th. If the Bruins win on Wednesday night, they’ll travel to Tampa for a 3 PM ET puck drop, but if the Leafs pull off the comeback and take the series, they’ll take the ice against the Lightning later in the day at 8 PM ET. Stay tuned for more Round Two schedule updates in the next 36 hours or so.

  • Meanwhile, the “consolation playoffs”, the IIHF World Championships, will begin in Denmark on May 4th and teams continue to add talent from those NHL teams who have been eliminated from the postseason. Insider Juha Hiitela adds another name to the list, confirming that Minnesota Wild forward Mikael Granlund will suit up for Finland at the tournament. Granlund scored at the highest clip of his career in 2017-18, recording 67 points in 77 games, including a career-high 46 assists. He added another three points in Minnesota’s first round playoff series versus Winnipeg, but the Wild were outmatched by the Jets and fell in five games. Now, Granlund will have a chance to return to the World Championships, where last he scored 12 points in 10 games to lead Finland to a second-place finish.
  • However, Hiitela adds that New Jersey Devils top defenseman Sami Vatanen will not be joining Granlund in Denmark. Per Hiitela, Vatanen suffered a concussion in the Devils opening series against the Tampa Bay Lightning. This adds some clarity to the recent situation in which Vatanen missed most of Game Four and all of the deciding Game Five with an undisclosed upper-body injury. Just as he was missed by New Jersey, he’ll be missed by Finland at the World Championships. This would have been the first appearance at the tournament for the five-year NHL veteran.

He won’t be facing any Taylor Hall shots, but Keith Kinkaid of the New Jersey Devils is headed to the World Championships for Team USA. Kinkaid started six games in the 2016 tournament, but struggled to find any consistency and his team failed to medal. This time around, things are a little bit different in his career.

Kinkaid essentially took the net from Cory Schneider this season, registering a .913 save percentage in 41 games and showing that he could have what it takes to be a starting goaltender in the NHL. It came at a good time, as the 28-year old goaltender is eligible to sign an extension on July 1st, but could hold out to hit free agency in 2019. Though he struggled in the postseason allowing nine goals on 46 shots, his body of work over a relatively short career is impressive enough to put him among the candidates for a long-term deal on the open market. A good performance at the Worlds would only add to that resume.

  • The Winnipeg Jets happily welcomed Toby Enstrom and Nikolaj Ehlers back to the ice today without their previous non-contact sweaters, meaning a return for the beginning of the second round seems possible. Ehlers played in just four games in the opening series, while Enstrom has yet to suit up in the postseason. According to Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun, Enstrom took his normal place beside Dustin Byfuglien in practice, while Ehlers was alongside Paul Stastny on the second line. Though nothing is official yet, the Jets are expected to kick off their second round series against the Nashville Predators on Friday night.
  • Evgeni Malkin was spotted by The Athletic’s Josh Yohe today, who noted that though there were no apparent casts, the superstar forward was walking with a “hint of a limp.” Malkin didn’t play in Game 6 of the first round, but is apparently “day to day” according to head coach Mike Sullivan. Getting Malkin back soon is imperative for the Pittsburgh Penguins as they prepare for another second round matchup with the Washington Capitals.

Sean Couturier Missed Game Four And Played Remainder Of Series With Torn MCL

UPDATE (4/22): After the Flyers’ Game Six loss today, it was revealed that the “lower-body injury” that kept Couturier out of Game Four was a torn MCL ligament. Yet, Couturier returned for Game Five and Game Six, compiling four goals –  the game-winner on Friday and a hat trick this afternoon – and two assists. That’s quite the gutsy performance for the Philly forward and Selke Trophy candidate.

4/18: The Philadelphia Flyers are facing a crucial Game Four tonight, at home and down 2-1  in their first round series with the Pittsburgh Penguins, but will have to secure the win without a key player. Flyers GM Ron Hextall has confirmed to the media that top line center Sean Couturier will not play tonight, ruled out with a lower-body injury. Couturier was injured in practice yesterday when he collided with defenseman Radko Gudas. The initial word out of Philadelphia was that Couturier would be a game-time decision tonight, with some question as to the severity of the injury versus simple gamesmanship of the Flyers’ part. While questions still remain, it is clear that Couturier has suffered a significant injury if it is causing him to miss a defining playoff game.

Couturier’s loss is a game-changer for this Metropolitan Division series, as the 25-year-old forward is enjoying a breakout campaign. Centering Philly’s top line this season, Couturier posted a career-high 76 points, finishing behind only superstar teammates Claude Giroux and Jakub Voracek in team scoring. Couturier nearly doubled his previous career-high of 39 points, while seeing little drop-off in the two-way game he has become known for. In fact, Couturier’s +34 rating this year was tops in the Eastern Conference and the best in the league among players not skating on the Vegas Golden Knights’ top line.

Couturier played a complete game all regular season and was a major threat for any opposing team. It will be difficult for the Flyers to replace his production in Game Four and beyond – which may only be Game Five – though at first glance, the easy solution will be to slide Giroux back to center and go from there. If there is one dull silver lining, it’s that Couturier has been largely ineffective against the Penguins both during the regular season and so far in the postseason. Remove the Flyers’ Game Two outburst and “Coots” has just two points in six games against Pittsburgh this year. Maybe his replacement in the lineup will have better luck, as the Flyers look to keep the series in reach and avoid an elimination game in Pittsburgh in Game Five.

Playoff Notes: Hornqvist, Malkin, Komarov, Ehlers

After having missed the last two playoff games for the Pittsburgh Penguins with an upper-body injury, veteran winger Patric Hornqvist is expected back for Game 6 today against the Philadelphia Flyers. Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Jason Mackey writes that Hornqvist’s return is a major boost for a team as he is one of the team’s most unheralded players.

Mackey writes Hornqvist’s skill around the net, willingness to take a hit and his intensity both on and off the ice are keys the Penguins have missed the last two games. In fact, it’s that passion that’s so important to Pittsbugh.

“He brings so much passion to the rink every day and loves the game,” Penguins coach Mike Sullivan said. “He loves to be around his teammates. He loves to practice. He loves to play, and it’s contagious. I think he’s one of the more passionate guys that I’ve been around in all the years that I’ve been associated with this league. That’s one of the things that we love about him.”

Whether it’s his attitude or scoring prowess, he has made a difference to the team, according to Mackey. When he’s on the ice, the Penguins have a .640 points percentage as opposed to a .559 when he’s not playing.

  • While Hornqvist is expected to play Sunday, the Pittsburgh Penguins aren’t as sure about the status of center Evgeni Malkin, according to Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Sam Werner and Mackey. Malkin was the only player to miss Saturday’s practice after injuring his leg in the first period of Friday’s game against the Philadelphia Flyers when he got collided with Jori Lehtera and fell awkwardly against the boards. While he left after that play, he returned for the second period. While missing practice isn’t that big of a deal, Sullivan didn’t tell the media he was taking a maintenance day, suggesting his injury could be more serious than originally thought. He is a game-time decision.
  • Sportsnet’s Chris Johnston writes that Toronto Maple Leafs forward Leo Komarov is at 85 percent and isn’t yet ready to play for Monday’s Game 6 against the Boston Bruins. The 31-year-old has only played in two games this series with a lower-body injury. He has no points and a minus-1 rating in those two games.
  • While it’s still a series away, the Winnipeg Jets Nikolaj Ehlers skated with a non-contact jersey Sunday. Head coach Paul Maurice said Ehlers wasn’t feeling quite right and missed Game 5 because of that, although the coach didn’t clarify if it was an injury or illness, according to Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun. Ehlers and the Jets await the winner between Nashville and Colorado in the second round of the playoffs.

Josh Jooris Assigned To Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins

Josh Jooris wasn’t likely to get into a game with the Pittsburgh Penguins anytime soon, so the team has assigned him back to the AHL for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins’ upcoming first round series. The WBS Penguins take on the Charlotte Checkers later this evening in Game 1 of the best-of-five series. Jooris had actually been placed on waivers according to Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports, explaining how he was able to be sent down now that he has cleared.

Jooris was acquired from the Carolina Hurricanes earlier this season in exchange for Greg McKegg, as a depth option for the Penguins. He ended up playing in nine games for them as they dealt with injury down the stretch, but wasn’t expected to crack the playoff lineup.

Headed for unrestricted free agency this summer, it seems unlikely that the 27-year old forward will secure a one-way deal. Though he did play 40 NHL games this season, he registered just six points and doesn’t have much upside. Instead, he’ll likely have to take a two-way deal and prove himself in the minor leagues or sit as an extra forward.

Patric Hornqvist Ruled Out For Game Five

  • Penguins winger Patric Hornqvist skated in advance of Pittsburgh’s practice today but he has already been ruled out for Friday’s contest against the Flyers, Chris Adamski of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review relays. He suffered an upper-body injury late in Sunday’s matchup and did not suit up on Wednesday night.  Rookie Dominik Simon took Hornqvist’s place in Game Four and will likely remain in the lineup for Game Five.

The Pittsburgh Penguins will have Kris Letang in the lineup despite missing practice as a “maintenance day” but won’t be as lucky with Patric Hornqvist. The high-energy winger is out for Game 4 against the Philadelphia Flyers and has been listed as day-to-day with an upper-body injury.

Hornqvist has three points in the first three games for the Penguins, and is an integral part of their powerplay unit as the net front presence. The team certainly has enough firepower to get by without him, but any loss to their forward group will test the depth of the lower lines.
