COVID Protocol Related Absences: 03/04/21

Each day, the NHL will publicly release the list of players that are unavailable to their respective teams due to being in COVID-19 Protocol. Here is today’s updated list:

Boston – Charlie Coyle
Philadelphia – Joel Farabee*
San Jose – Tomas Hertl

As a reminder, inclusion on this list does not mean that a player has tested positive for Coronavirus or even that they have been confirmed as a close contact to another positive person. Included in the NHL’s list of possible reasons for someone being on the list is are the following:

(1) an initial positive test which remains unconfirmed until confirmatory testing is completed pursuant to the Positive Test Protocol; (2) mandated isolation for symptomatic individuals pursuant to the Positive Test Protocol; (3) required quarantine as a high-risk close contact in accordance with the Positive Test Protocol; (4) isolation based on a confirmed positive test result and/or; (5) quarantine for travel or other reasons as outlined in the COVID-19 Protocol

Players removed today: Ryan Johansen, Nashville Predators; Sidney Crosby, Pittsburgh Penguins.

While Penguins superstar Crosby, as well as Pittsburgh assistant coach Todd Reirden, are a welcome subtraction from the CRPA list, it is one step forward and one step back as the league continues to get agonizingly close to a blank list. The Philadelphia Flyers are back on COVID watch, as Farabee makes his first appearance of the season less than a week after many of his teammates were finally removed. Boston Bruins forward Coyle, a late addition on Wednesday night, also does not seem to be a fluke, as he was not at practice this morning and remains on today’s list.

UPDATE: Nashville’s late report showed that that they too are no longer carrying any protocol players. Johansen has been activated from the CPRA list, making this a net positive day in the league’s battle against COVID.

Devils’ Nico Hischier Placed On Injured Reserve

An unlucky season for newly-minted New Jersey Devils captain Nico Hischier continues. The Devils have announced that Hischier has been placed on the injured reserve as a result of injuries suffered when he was struck in the face with the puck in a February 27 match-up with the Washington Capitals. He is considered week-to-week.

This latest incident for Hischier occurred on Saturday when a high slap shot from teammate P.K. Subban hit Hischier square in the visor, knocking him out of the game. Hischier has not played since and the Devils have revealed that he has been in concussion protocol and will continue to undergo observation. Additionally, Hischier suffered a “sinus fracture”, a broken nose or facial bone.

This is Hischier’s third separate health issue so far this season. He got a late start to the season due to a leg injury, only to land on the NHL’s COVID Protocol Related Absences list with many of his teammates before he could even return to action. Hischier finally returned to the lineup on February 20 and, thanks to a condensed schedule, was able to play in five games before this latest injury occurred only a week later. Altogether, he has missed 13 games – or 72% – of New Jersey’s season so far and there is now out for another indefinite period of time.

The Devils will continue to have to rely on their many young players to step up in Hischier’s place as they have so far this season. One of the early highlights for New Jersey this season has been Janne Kuokkanen, who has six points in 13 games. While it may not seem like much, it is in fact tied for fifth-most among Devils forwards. Kuokkanen has been promoted back to the active roster from the taxi squad to take Hischier’s place in the lineup.

Sidney Crosby, Todd Reirden Exit COVID Protocol

Sidney Crosby has been the biggest name to land on the NHL’s COVID Protocol Related Absences list so far this season, but it was a short stay for the Penguins captain. Pittsburgh has announced that Crosby has been activated from the COVID Protocol and will be in the lineup for their Thursday night game.

Assistant coach Todd Reirden has also been cleared of the COVID Protocol and will be back behind the bench. He was replaced by development coach Ty Hennes for the team’s last game.

Both men only landed on the list on Tuesday and missed just one game. Led by a 40-save effort from Tristan Jarry, the team stepped up in their stead with a 5-2 win over the Philadelphia Flyers. They face their in-state rival again tonight.

Charlie Coyle Added To COVID Protocol

After the list had already come out for today, Charlie Coyle of the Boston Bruins was added to the COVID Protocol. The veteran forward will not play tonight for the Bruins.

To be clear, inclusion on the CPRA list does not mean that a player has tested positive for Coronavirus or even that they have been confirmed as a close contact to another positive person. Included in the NHL’s list of possible reasons for someone being on the list is are the following:

(1) an initial positive test which remains unconfirmed until confirmatory testing is completed pursuant to the Positive Test Protocol; (2) mandated isolation for symptomatic individuals pursuant to the Positive Test Protocol; (3) required quarantine as a high-risk close contact in accordance with the Positive Test Protocol; (4) isolation based on a confirmed positive test result and/or; (5) quarantine for travel or other reasons as outlined in the COVID-19 Protocol

Coyle’s appearance in the protocol does not mean he will be out for any length of time other than tonight’s game, or that there has been any spread throughout the Bruins locker room. Still, it’s concerning at least for tonight, just over an hour before the opening faceoff between the Bruins and Washington Capitals.

Boston will have to go without Coyle, who had been playing well of late and has eight points in 19 games this season. The 29-year-old forward scored two goals in his last game and is an important part of the Bruins’ secondary scoring. The versatile forward has lined up at both center and the wing, while seeing time on both the powerplay and penalty kill.

COVID Protocol Related Absences: 03/03/21

Each day, the NHL will publicly release the list of players that are unavailable to their respective teams due to being in COVID-19 Protocol. Though the league is still waiting on a report from the Ducks and Kings, here is the rest of today’s list:

No players have been added to the list today, an especially good sign given Crosby and Penguins assistant coach Todd Reirden were forced to miss last night’s game. Though the Pittsburgh superstar remains out, no one else has joined him on the sidelines. The Penguins are back in action tomorrow and Saturday against the Flyers; it is unclear if Crosby will be removed from the list and able to play in either of those games.

The big story today is Crosby, who we learned this morning would not be available for Pittsburgh’s game tonight. It is not clear why exactly Crosby is on the list, but he’ll miss at least tonight. Also missing the game is assistant coach Todd Rierden. The Penguins announced he is additionally unavailable due to COVID protocol and will be replaced on the bench by development coach Ty Hennes.

Johansen’s appearance is also a tough blow for the Predators, who recently lost Ryan Ellis and Luke Kunin to injured reserve. Nashville is likely headed into sell-off mode as the deadline approaches.

Three names coming off is another strong day, though the two new ones obviously generate some concern. Still, to see the Coyotes, Red Wings and Rangers clear their boards entirely is encouraging.

Sidney Crosby Placed In COVID Protocol

There will be a new name on the COVID Protocol Related Absences list when it comes out later today, and it’s a big one. Sidney Crosby has entered the league’s protocol according to Pittsburgh Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan and will not be available for tonight’s game. The team did not have a morning skate today because of the protocol.

To be clear, this does not necessarily mean that Crosby has tested positive for coronavirus. Included in the NHL’s list of possible reasons for someone being on the list is are the following:

(1) an initial positive test which remains unconfirmed until confirmatory testing is completed pursuant to the Positive Test Protocol; (2) mandated isolation for symptomatic individuals pursuant to the Positive Test Protocol; (3) required quarantine as a high-risk close contact in accordance with the Positive Test Protocol; (4) isolation based on a confirmed positive test result and/or; (5) quarantine for travel or other reasons as outlined in the COVID-19 Protocol

The Penguins appear to still be on for tonight against the Philadelphia Flyers and will have Tristan Jarry in the net. Mark Jankowski will also not be available and remains listed day-to-day with an injury. He skated this morning on his own but is not quite ready.

The CPRA list is released at 5pm ET every day.

So far, there are no new names added to the list today, though none have been removed either. That’s still probably considered a win in the eyes of the league, who continue to slowly watch teams open up limited seating in various arenas.

Even with Nemeth’s addition, it’s still a positive day with two more names coming off the list.  Dzingel, of course, was on there for a mandatory two-week quarantine period following his trade from Carolina and is now eligible to practice with the team.  As for Konecny, he had been on there for the past two weeks, similar to his Flyers teammates who were on there before he was.

Unfortunately, the new addition to CPRA list today is a familiar name. Coyotes forward Hayden had previously been on the list earlier this season and now makes his return. Hayden was made a healthy scratch last night and Arizona made a roster addition earlier, seemingly without an open spot, so this move explains the situation.

There were no players removed from the list today, but with Dzingel only on the list as a post-trade quarantine formality and Konecny expected to be removed in the next day or two with a negative test following his required two-week absence, the league is still in a good place, especially compared to their status a few short weeks ago.
