Randy Carlyle

Snapshots: Carlyle, Toronto Captaincy, Kaberle, Kings Centers, Palushaj

September 22, 2016 at 11:50 am CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

The decision to bring back Randy Carlyle to Anaheim as their head coach was one of the bigger surprises of the offseason.  As Eric Stephens of the OC Register points out, GM Bob Murray kept coming back to one key trait about Carlyle – the fact that he has won a Stanley Cup (with the Ducks back in 2007).  Murray also believes Carlyle has some characteristics that will work well with an older roster looking to win now compared to building for the future:

“First of all, there’s never one thing when it comes to coaching. Job is far too complex. In saying that, we all knew he’s an outstanding bench coach, and we wanted to be sure he still would hold all of his players accountable, which is getting harder every year with the changing times and today’s athlete.”

There are only a handful of players that remain from his first go-round with Anaheim but several veteran players voiced their support to bring Carlyle back including captain Ryan Getzlaf as well as center Ryan Kesler and defenseman Kevin Bieksa, both of whom are familiar with him dating back to their time in Vancouver’s system.

Anaheim has made some notable changes heading into this season which will give Carlyle a different roster composition to work with than ex-coach Bruce Boudreau had.  Earlier this week, we took a closer look at the Ducks’ moves and what to watch for this season.

More news and notes around the hockey world:

  • The Toronto Maple Leafs have yet to name a captain for the season and GM Lou Lamoriello indicated there is no real timeline for that to happen, notes theScore’s David Alter. Lamoriello announced that it may or may not occur this season and that selecting a captain is “not on the forefront”.  The Leafs have been without a captain since trading Dion Phaneuf to Ottawa last season.
  • Long-time NHL defenseman Tomas Kaberle has quietly announced his retirement, reports Czech site iDNES (link in Czech). He leaves the game with a total of 984 NHL contests under his belt with Toronto, Boston, Carolina, and Montreal.  In his prime, he was a premier playmaking blueliner and put up seven seasons of 40 or more points and wound up with 87 goals and 476 assists in his NHL career.
  • Kings coach Darryl Sutter is hoping to see a young center step into the third line spot this season, writes Helene Elliott of the LA Times. Anze Kopitar and Jeff Carter are entrenched as their top two while Trevor Lewis best fits in a fourth line role.  Candidates to step into that third line spot would be Andy Andreoff, Nick Shore, Nic Dowd, and 2014 first round pick Adrian Kempe, who just completed his first full season in North America.
  • Columbus has added UFA winger Aaron Palushaj to their training camp roster on a PTO, reports Rob Mixer from their team site.  Palushaj spent last season with Philadelphia’s AHL affiliate, picking up 28 points in 57 games.  He last played in the NHL with Carolina in the 2013-14 season.

Anaheim Ducks Sign Max Jones To ELC

August 26, 2016 at 2:49 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

Jun 24, 2016; Buffalo, NY, USA; Max Jones puts on a team jersey after being selected as the number twenty-four overall draft pick by the Anaheim Ducks in the first round of the 2016 NHL Draft at the First Niagra Center. Mandatory Credit: Timothy T. Ludwig-USA TODAY SportsUpdate (4:00pm): Eric Stephens of the Orange County Register fills in some of the financial details, via Twitter. The deal comes with an NHL salary of $925K and an annual AHL pay rate of $70K.

Cap Friendly adds that the pact contains no performance bonuses in any of the three years. The tweet suggests this is the first ELC in seven years signed by a player chosen 24th overall that did not include performance bonuses.

2:49pm: After drafting Max Jones 24th overall in the latest entry draft, the Anaheim Ducks have signed him to a three-year, entry-level contract. No financial details were released.

Jones, 18, played last season in London alongside fellow first-rounders Olli Juolevi and Matthew Tkachuk and was a finalist for the OHL Rookie of the Year award. His 52 points in 63 games ranked him second among league rookies and sixth on the Memorial Cup winning Knights.

While he is still extremely young, Jones has matured physically and stands at 6’3″ 205 lbs. He uses that long frame and size to remove defenders from the puck, but can get a little overzealous in the physical side of the game. His 106 penalty minutes ranked him second on his team and eighth in the entire league. That would seem to lend itself perfectly to Randy Carlyle and the type of hockey the Ducks play; they led the league in fighting last season and brought in Jared Boll this offseason.

While Jones may not have the offensive flourish of some of his first round contemporaries, he’s almost a lock to make it to the NHL in at least a bottom-six role. If his skating and creativity progress, he could find himself in a scoring power winger slot on an Anaheim team in the next few years.

Jared Boll Signs Two-Year Deal With Anaheim

July 5, 2016 at 3:41 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

Jared Boll is off to the west coast, as according to Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch, the Anaheim Ducks are the free agent forward’s likely landing spot.  Eric Stephens of the Orange County Register confirmed the signing and gives us the financial details: Boll will receive a two-year deal that pays him $900K per season.

One of the league’s preeminent tough guys, Boll has 154 regular season NHL fights under his belt in during his nine year career.  He has scored only 27 goals and 62 points across his 518 games.

After landing Boll, Anaheim will be even more dangerous with their fists; the team led the NHL in fighting majors last season with 42, and have brought back noted tough-guy coach Randy Carlyle to head the bench next season.

Boll would likely fill the same roll he always has, playing under eight minutes a night but providing some protection for the star players of his team. Anaheim seems like the perfect landing spot, as they continue to develop a young, mobile defense corps, and still have elite scoring talents up front.

Anaheim Officially Names Randy Carlyle Head Coach

June 15, 2016 at 11:32 am CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

TUESDAY 11:32 AM CST: Chris Johnston of Sportsnet reports that Carlyle will be keeping assistants Paul MacLean and Trent Yawney on with him in Anaheim.

11:17 AM CST: The Ducks have officially announced the hiring.

Late Monday night, word broke that the Anaheim Ducks are set to name Randy Carlyle as their new head coach.  ESPN’s John Buccigross was first with the report while TSN’s Darren Dreger added that the hiring should made official on Tuesday.

The hiring comes as somewhat of a surprise considering the Ducks fired Carlyle as their bench boss in the 2011-12 season.  They replaced him with Bruce Boudreau and now, have replaced Boudreau (who since has joined the Minnesota Wild as their new head coach) with Carlyle.

The 60 year old Carlyle last coached in the 2014-15 campaign with the Toronto Maple Leafs where he spent parts of four seasons with the team.  While there, he led Toronto to their only playoff berth in the past ten years back in 2012-13 where they lost to Boston in the first round.

Carlyle had previously been with Anaheim from 2005 up until his firing in 2011.  His teams posted a winning record in every season but his last one and won nine playoff series including a Stanley Cup victory in 2007.  Overall, his record behind the Ducks’ bench is 317-208-71.

Still, the decision has caught many by surprise as several key Anaheim veterans had reportedly grown to be frustrated with Carlyle’s coaching style and some of those players are still there.  There are also those that are of the mindset that his system is a bit outdated for the more modern NHL.

However, GM Bob Murray appears to be looking for less of a player-friendly coach after Boudreau and is certainly familiar with Carlyle having been with Anaheim during his first stint as coach.

Re-hirings don’t happen too often in the NHL (Michel Therrien in Montreal and Paul Maurice years ago in Carolina are somewhat recent exceptions) so it will certainly be interesting to see how Carlyle’s second go-around with the Ducks plays out.
