Predators Recall Juuse Saros

The Nashville Predators have recalled goaltending prospect Juuse Saros from the AHL Milwaukee Admirals today, reports Adam Vingan of the Tennessean. Current backup Marek Mazanec is reassigned to the AHL.

Saros forced the Predators’ hand after dominating in the AHL. His .949 SV% and 1.59 GAA is second amongst all goaltenders. He won his sixth straight start last night against the Grand Rapids Griffins, and is now 9-1-0 overall.

Marazec, on the other hand, has not fared so well. In three games for the Predators he’s posted a dreadful .809 SV% and a 5.44 GAA. His AHL stats are slightly better as he earned a .849 Sv% and a 3.90 GAA in his two games in Milwaukee.

News and notes from around the NHL this morning:

  • The Ottawa Senators have recalled defenseman Fredrik Claesson from Binghamton ahead of tonight’s game against the Boston Bruins, reports Ken Warren of the Ottawa Citizen. The stay-at-home defenseman has one assist in nine games with Binghamton this season, and zero points in his six games with Ottawa. Claesson’s recall initially pointed to Sens defenseman Dion Phaneuf not playing tonight, but Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun expects the Phaneuf to play after he left Ottawa’s optional skate early.
  • Continuing with the Senators, the Ottawa Citizen’s Don Butler reports that owner Eugene Melnyk’s development group RendezVous LeBreton can now negotiate with the National Capital Commission’s board on placing an arena in downtown Ottawa. The Commission was considering Melnyk’s bid alongside a competing bid from Decore Canderel DLS.  Melnyk’s venture plans to create an arena, practice center, and sports and recreation community center in the heart of downtown Ottawa on 21 hectares. The Senators currently play in Kanata, Ontario, which is about a thirty minute drive without traffic from the city center.
  • Staying with the Senators, Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun reports that forward Bobby Ryan will return to the lineup tonight. Ryan missed the past two games with a severe bone bruise on his finger. The forward has struggled so far this season, scoring only 3G and 3A in 17 games. Garrioch expects Ryan to play on a line with Kyle Turris and Ryan Dzingel.
  • Boston Bruins backup goaltender Anton Khudobin may return from his conditioning stint with the Providence Bruins, reports Mark Divver. Khudobin did not travel with the AHL team to St. John’s today, which indicates that he might join Boston tonight against the Ottawa Senators. The goalie had a rough time in the AHL, posting a 3.49 GAA and a .874 SV% in three games.

  • The New York Rangers announced that forward Pavel Buchnevich will be out for two to three weeks with back spasms. The Russian prospect missed the past three games with back issues and underwent an MRI today to discern the problem. The MRI showed no structural damage, reports the New York Post’s Larry Brooks, but Buchnevich will need at least two weeks to strengthen his core. This injury—coupled with Mika Zibanejad’s broken fibula last night—continues to deplete the Rangers’ roster. The team claimed Matt Puempel today in an effort to staunch the bleeding.
  • The New Jersey Devils may be without forward Kyle Palmieri tonight against the San Jose Sharks, reports Andrew Gross of the North Jersey Record. Palmieri suffers from upper-body soreness and only briefly took part in today’s morning skate. The American winger has 3G and 4A in 17 games for the Devils, and the team hopes that Palmieri can eventually find the magic he harnessed last year.
  • Jake Guentzel, the Pittsburgh Penguins 2013-third round pick, scored on his first shift in his first NHL game tonight against the New York Rangers. Guentzel was called up from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton after potting 7G and 10A in 16 games. Guentzel then went on to score a second goal in the first period. The last Penguin to do that was Luca Caputi back in 2009. Part-owner Mario Lemieux also scored his first goal on his first NHL shift.

Eddie Lack Concussed

The Carolina Hurricanes announced that goaltender Eddie Lack suffered a concussion today in practice. The team has called up Michael Leighton from the AHL Charlotte Checkers to serve as backup tomorrow night against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Lack has since been placed on Injured Reserve.

Lack has not been the goaltender the Hurricanes hoped for since acquiring him from the Vancouver Canucks. Last year Lack posted a .901 SV% and a 2.81 GAA. He’s fared even worse this season with a .856 SV% and a 3.80 GAA in 4 starts.

Lack’s performance has relegated the goaltender to backup status, and Cam Ward’s stats so far imply that Ward is not relinquishing the starting job anytime soon. In 13 starts this season, Ward has a .916 SV% and a 2.36 GAA. Not elite numbers, but definitely good enough to keep him between the pipes full-time.

 

Senators Place Andrew Hammond On Waivers

The Ottawa Senators have placed goaltender Andrew Hammond on waivers today, reports Sportsnet’s Chris Johnston. Hammond is the odd man out in Ottawa after the Senators acquired goaltender Mike Condon from the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Hammond has struggled so far this season in Ottawa. In his short two game stint with the big club he’s earned a .793 SV% and a 4.50 GAA. His numbers are a far cry from two seasons ago when he put up an astounding .941 SV% and a 1.79 GAA in 23 starts, going 20-1 down the stretch for Ottawa.

The club’s decision to waive Hammond indicates that Craig Anderson will be returning to the team for good. Anderson has taken personal time away from the team to tend to his wife after her recent cancer diagnosis.

It is uncertain, however, whether Hammond would report to Binghamton if he clears waivers. The goaltender previously declined to consent to a conditioning stint in the AHL after returning from a groin injury this week. The Sens attempted to trade Hammond this week, but this waiver addition implies that there were no takers.

News and notes from around the NHL this morning:

  • The Ottawa Senators recalled forward Curtis Lazar from the Binghamton Senators this morning, first reported by the Ottawa Sun’s Bruce Garrioch and then confirmed by the team. The Senators have been hit hard by the injury bug lately, and have been without Bobby Ryan (hand), Clarke MacArthur (concussion), and Mike Hoffman (lower body). Bruce Garrioch reported that the Sens would wait until Friday night—after Binghamton played the Albany Devils—to see who would be called up. Lazar scored last night and must’ve impressed team brass enough to earn a recall. He currently has 3G and 1A in 13 games for Binghamton.
  • The Buffalo Sabres have called up forwards Cal O’Reilly and Cole Schneider from the Rochester Americans (Amerks) this morning, reports Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News. The Sabres are hoping that the callups spark the team’s scoring woes—Schneider has 7G and 10A in 13 games and O’Reilly 3G and 15A in 15 games—as they’ve scored a mere 6 goals in six games. The two forwards lead the Amerks in scoring.
  • The Montreal Canadiens have reassigned forward Sven Andrighetto back to the St. John IceCaps, reports TSN 690’s Amanda Stein. The Swiss forward has 5G and 6A in 10 games for St. Johns, but went scoreless in 4 games with the Canadiens. He averaged under 12 minutes a night for those four games.

Tampa Bay Lightning Update On Stamkos

The Tampa Bay Lightning have officially announced that captain Steven Stamkos underwent surgery today to repair a lateral meniscus tear in his right knee. Stamkos is not expected to return for at least four months. The announcement confirms previous reports by various media members earlier today.

Stamkos undergoes his second major injury absence in four years just months after signing a lucrative eight-year, $68MM contract in the offseason. His first was a broken tibia he sustained in the 2013-14 season that cost him 45 games. Stamkos’s latest injury is on the same leg as the first one, though it is unclear whether they are related.

The Lightning have just under $2.7MM in cap space, but could add more salary if they place Stamkos on Long-Term Injured Reserve (LTIR). The Lightning could be looking for someone like the Arizona Coyotes’ Martin Hanzal, an impending UFA with a reasonable $3.1MM cap hit. The Coyotes are shopping Hanzal and are looking for an NHL-ready forward in return.

Injury Updates: Steen, Drouin, Duchene

Injury notes this evening:

  • Alex Steen will not play for the St. Louis Blues this evening against the San Jose Sharks, reports the team. Steen left Tuesday’s game against the Buffalo Sabres after Josh Gorges shoved his head into the glass. He was not on the ice for the pre-game warmups and will be missed. Steen has 2G and 8A in 10 games, good for third in team scoring.
  • Tampa Bay Lightning forward Jonathan Drouin returns tonight against the Buffalo Sabres, reports Tampa Bay Times writer Joe Smith. Drouin has been out with an upper-body injury, but travelled with the team on its five-game road trip. Drouin’s return provides temporary relief for Tampa Bay after it lost Steven Stamkos for at least four months due to a meniscus tear.
  • Colorado Avalanche forward Matt Duchene will not return tonight for the team’s game against the Dallas Stars, reports Terry Frei of the Denver Post. Duchene has missed the past two games with a concussion, and although he skated with the team today, he did not feel ready to return. Duchene joins Gabriel Landeskog on the sidelines as the latter sits out with a lower-body injury. Coach Bednar stated that Landeskog is “questionable moving forward.” Duchene and Ladeskog are 1st and 2nd in scoring for the Avalanche this season, and their absences are of concern for the struggling team. The Avalanche currently sit last in the Central Division.

  • Ottawa Senators goaltender Craig Anderson has left the team again for personal reasons, reports the Ottawa Sun’s Bruce Garrioch. Anderson has left the team twice so far this season to be with his wife after her recent cancer diagnosis. Andrew Hammond will serve as back-up to newcomer Mike Condon, who the Senators acquired from Pittsburgh for a fifth-round draft pick. Condon is 2-0-0 since being acquired and has put up a stellar 0.48 GAA and a .983 SV%.
  • Former NHL goalie Anders Lindback was ostensibly released from, and reinstated to, his PTO today with the Los Angeles Kings affiliate Ontario Reign, reports Ontario Reign Insider Lindsay Czarnecki. The team initially announced that it released Lindback from the team before retracting that statement within the hour. Lindback was signed to the PTO on October 25th after the Kings found themselves without any starting goalies because both Jonathan Quick and Jeff Zatkoff were out with injury. The Kings are now carrying three goalies in Peter Budaj, Jack Campbell, and Zatkoff (injured), and will most likely send Campbell down when Zatkoff heals.
  • The Philadelphia Flyers have scratched defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere for tonight’s game against the Winnipeg Jets, reports the Philadelphia Inquirer’s Sam Carchidi. In an ironic twist, Gostisbehere was named Philadelphia’s Pro Athlete of the Year by the Philadelphia Sports Writers Association earlier this morning. Coach Dave Hakstol says that the benching should be good for his growth and development. The young defenseman currently has 3G and 7A in 17 games for the Flyers. He will be replaced by Andrew MacDonald who has 1G and 2A in 10 games.
