Atlantic Division Updates: Ekblad, Duclair, Bunting, Cernak

April 25, 2023 at 1:55 pm CDT | by Brennan McClain 4 Comments

Josh Gold-Smith of The Score reports that reinforcements are coming in for the Florida Panthers, as both Aaron Ekblad and Anthony Duclair will be back for Game Five. This will be an elimination game for the Panthers, as the Boston Bruins have taken a three-to-one lead in the series.

Ekblad finally makes his return after leaving Game Three with an undisclosed injury. Before the start of Game Four, Ekblad was listed as a game-time decision and wound up not being able to play, as Casey Fitzgerald took his place in the lineup. Aside from Game Three, Ekblad averaged a little over 24 minutes a night in the first two games of the series but has been unable to find the scoresheet yet for the Panthers.

Duclair, who was also sitting out of Game Four with an undisclosed injury, returns to stave off elimination from the President’s Trophy winners. Duclair has not been used as much as Ekblad has been throughout this series, only averaging a little under 13 minutes a night. In the three games that he has played, Duclair has also been unable to find himself on the scoresheet and also carries a +/- of -6.

Other notes from the Atlantic Division:

  • Returning back from a three-game suspension, Michael Bunting will be available for the Toronto Maple Leafs Thursday night as they look to eliminate the three-time defending Eastern Conference Champion Tampa Bay Lightning. Playing very well in his absence, Mark Masters of TSN reports that there is potential for Bunting to not make his way into the lineup for Game Five. Masters relays on a message from the Maple Leafs’ head coach Sheldon Keefe, who states that no decision has been made about Bunting’s return to the lineup but did confirm that Matthew Knies was not coming out of the lineup for Bunting.
  • On the receiving end of Bunting’s suspension-worthy hit, Lightning defenseman Erik Cernak will not return for Game Five (Tweet Link). Only playing just over nine minutes in Game One, the Lightning have been without one of their best defensive defensemen for the remainder of the series up to this point. Since Cernak’s exit from Tampa Bay’s lineup, the Lightning have been unable to hold Toronto to less than four goals a game.

Oilers Call Up Dylan Holloway, Olivier Rodrigue

April 23, 2023 at 3:32 pm CDT | by Brennan McClain Leave a Comment

In preparation for tonight’s Game Four between the Los Angeles Kings and the Edmonton Oilers, Mark Spector of Sportsnet reports that the Oilers have recalled forward Dylan Holloway and goaltender Olivier Rodrigue from their AHL affiliate Bakersfield Condors.

Due to the undisclosed injury to forward Mattias Janmark, Holloway could find himself in the lineup tonight if Janmark is expected to miss a second straight game. If Holloway does find his way into the lineup, it will be the first NHL playoff game of his career.

In his rookie season, Holloway, unfortunately, did not impress as much as the Oilers may have liked him too. In 51 games for Edmonton this season, Holloway posted three goals and six assists. He did achieve a positive Corsi For % of 54.2, but averaging just a touch over nine minutes a night, Holloway never really got that much of an opportunity for the Oilers this season. He was sent down to the AHL on February 17th, but injured himself for one month, getting cleared to return on March 15th.

In his first full season in the AHL, Rodrigue posted a solid season, going 14-14-1 in 29 games played, carrying a SV% of .912 and a GAA of 2.77. As both regular goaltenders Stuart Skinner and Jack Campbell should be ready to play for Edmonton tonight, Rodrigue will likely be serving as the emergency backup goaltender for the Oilers.

David Krejci Expected To Miss At Least Two Games

April 23, 2023 at 2:32 pm CDT | by Brennan McClain 3 Comments

Center depth for the Boston Bruins will continue to be tested in their opening-round matchup against the Florida Panthers, as Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe reports that Bruins’ center David Krejci will miss Game Four, and will not be expected back for Game Five either. This will be the team’s second straight game without either Patrice Bergeron or Krejci in the lineup.

In the point-scoring category, Krejci and Bergeron were two of Boston’s top centers this season. Scoring a collective 114 points in 148 games, these two veteran leaders sparked the Bruins’ historic run to the President’s Trophy this season. Their defensive attributes should be included as well, as they collectively put together a Defensive Point Share of 4.8.

When discussing the absence of both Bergeron and Krejci, anyone would be remiss if Pavel Zacha and Charlie Coyle were not brought up in the conversation. So far in this series, Zacha has two assists in the first three games, and Coyle has scored one goal. Both centermen have averaged over 16 minutes a night, showing the rest of the league how deep the Bruins really are.

With a 2-1 lead in the series before the start of Game Four, the Bruins will look to closeout the Panthers over the next couple of games. This would be the best scenario for Boston, moving on to the second round early, and allowing their two veterans to recover fully before their next series.

Jack Drury Will Not Return To Game Four

April 23, 2023 at 1:31 pm CDT | by Brennan McClain Leave a Comment

Shortly after the first period began in Game Four of the playoff series between the Carolina Hurricanes and New York Islanders, Islanders’ defenseman Ryan Pulock delivered a sizeable hit to Hurricanes’ forward Jack Drury. Drury would not return for the rest of the period, and Carolina has announced that he will not return to the game today due to an upper-body injury.

Initially, because Drury’s back was turned to Pulock, and due to his distance away from the boards, the referees initially gave Pulock a major penalty, which would have put Carolina on the powerplay for five minutes. Instead, the referees decided to downgrade the penalty to a minor, and Pulock was only sentenced to two minutes in the penalty box.

Although Drury’s numbers in the AHL have not yet transferred over to the NHL, he still has become a decent depth forward for the Hurricanes. In 38 regular season games this year, Drury scored two goals and six assists. More importantly, Drury managed strong possession numbers throughout the entire season, posting a Corsi For % in all situations of 65.9.

In this year’s playoffs, Drury has played in all four games for Carolina up to this point, without recording a point but winning all nine faceoffs that he has taken. Although not producing the points that the Hurricanes may need come playoff time, Drury’s ability to help the team possess the puck while he is out there will be something that Carolina will miss if he is unable to play in any more games this series.

Central Notes: Morrissey, Avalanche, Eriksson Ek

April 22, 2023 at 4:56 pm CDT | by Brennan McClain 1 Comment

As the Winnipeg Jets look to take back the lead in their first-round matchup against the Vegas Golden Knights, they will have to do it without Norris candidate Josh Morrissey. The team announced that Morrissey will not return to Game Three due to a lower-body injury.

On the heels of far and away the best season of his career, Morrissey will be a huge missing presence on the ice for the Jets. The team hasn’t made any mention of his status for Game Four in their series, as they will likely give updates after tonight’s game or tomorrow. In two games played so far for Morrissey in the playoffs, he has managed one assist, dishing the puck to teammate Kyle Connor for the opening goal in this series.

Although it will be near impossible to replicate the kind of offense that Morrissey is able to bring from the back end, the one player who could hold down the fort in the meantime is defenseman Neal Pionk. Pionk has been a steady presence on the blue line for the Jets over the last four seasons, hovering around 30 points every year, including a 45-point season in 2019-20.

Other notes from the Central Division:

  • In his media availability this morning, the head coach of the Colorado Avalanche, Jared Bednar relayed to the press that he is unsure if either Andrew Cogliano or Lars Eller will play tonight (Twitter Link). Cogliano has yet to play for the Avalanche in their series against the Seattle Kraken, as he is still working his way back from an upper-body injury suffered toward the end of the regular season. Eller, on the other hand, has played in both games so far for Colorado but did appear to be shaken up after receiving a hit in Game Two.
  • Sarah McLellan of Star Tribune Sports reports that Joel Eriksson Ek is being evaluated by the Minnesota Wild, and would likely know if he will be in the lineup before their game tomorrow. Eriksson Ek returned to the Wild for Game Three and only managed to play for 19 seconds before leaving for the rest of the game. Although Minnesota has a 2-1 lead so far in the series, Eriksson Ek was one of four Wild players to score more than 60 points this season, and will certainly be missed by Minnesota.

Connor Bedard Will Not Play In World Championships

April 21, 2023 at 8:54 pm CDT | by Brennan McClain 6 Comments

Jeff Marek of Sportsnet reports that the presumptive first-overall pick in this year’s upcoming draft, Connor Bedard, will not suit up for Team Canada in the upcoming World Hockey Championships. This indicates that we have seen the last of Bedard for this season, and his next bit of competitive hockey action will be in the NHL next year.

In one of the most incredible junior seasons throughout WHL history, Bedard cemented himself as one of the most important prospects in the game. In 57 games played for the Regina Pats, the captain of the team scored 71 goals and 72 assists, leading Regina to an 11th-place finish in the league. Outside of the WHL, Bedard also led Team Canada in this year’s World Junior Championship, scoring nine goals and 14 assists in only seven games, leading Team Canada to the gold medal.

In an unfortunate end to his likely last season in junior hockey, the Regina Pats were eliminated by the Saskatoon Blades in seven games, eliminating Regina from the WHL playoffs, and ultimately the Memorial Cup playoffs as well. Although losing, it was no fault of Bedard, as the young prospect scored 10 goals and 10 assists in their opening-round matchup.

In just over two weeks, the NHL and its fans will learn who will likely take Bedard first overall in this year’s draft, as the NHL draft lottery is scheduled for May 8th. In recent years, there have been some surprise teams leap into the first-overall slot, but it will most likely fall to either the Anaheim Ducks, Columbus Blue Jackets, or Chicago Blackhawks, as all three teams have over a 10% chance of winning the draft lottery in May.

David Krejci Out For Game Three

April 21, 2023 at 6:46 pm CDT | by Brennan McClain 2 Comments

Already without captain Patrice Bergeron in their lineup, the Boston Bruins have announced that another veteran center, this time David Krejci, will miss game three with an upper-body injury. At the end of the regular season, Krejci was shut down for the final two games, that time being a lower-body injury.

Delivering on a “Last Dance” style season, the Bruins handily took the NHL’s President’s Trophy, breaking the all-time win record by a team for a single season. Heading into this year’s playoffs, the Bruins were the heavy favorite to eventually win Lord Stanley’s Cup. Unfortunately for the team, they will be without not only two of their best players but two of their best leaders as they play a pivotal game three against the Florida Panthers.

Luckily for the Bruins, after acquiring such players as Dmitry Orlov, Tyler Bertuzzi, and Garnet Hathaway at the trade deadline, they should still reasonably be expected to win this series, but their pathway is becoming a lot more difficult. The Panthers delivered a decisive blow to take game two and will have the benefit of being on home ice for the next two games.

Alexander Romanov, Jesse Puljujarvi Back For Game Three

April 21, 2023 at 6:31 pm CDT | by Brennan McClain Leave a Comment

As the series shifts to New York for game three, both the New York Islanders and Carolina Hurricanes will be receiving reinforcements. Returning for the Islanders will be defenseman Alexander Romanov, and Jesse Puljujarvi returns for the Hurricanes (link). Romanov has been out of New York’s lineup since their April 1st game against the Tampa Bay Lightning, and Puljujarvi has been out of the lineup since their last game of the regular season.

Although the Islanders have played a relatively sound defensive series up to this point, getting Romanov back will allow New York to make things much more difficult on their opposition. Romanov doesn’t score at a rapid pace, but his ability to block shots and deliver serious hits has made him a staple of the Islanders’ back end. In his first season since being acquired from the Montreal Canadiens at last season’s draft, Romanov has played 76 regular season games for the Islanders this season, blocking 129 shots, and making 198 hits.

On the other side of the puck, it is much harder to predict what kind of impact Puljujarvi will make for the Hurricanes. Before joining his new team in Carolina, Puljujarvi skated in 58 games for the Edmonton Oilers, scoring five goals and nine assists. Thinking that a change of scenery might help him reclaim some of his potential of being a fourth overall pick, Puljujarvi only managed to score two points in 17 games in Carolina, neither of which were goals.

To this point in the series, Carolina has a 2-0 lead, winning both games by one goal, including an overtime win in game two. This season, the Hurricanes were a middle-of-the-pack team in terms of goal scoring, and with the Islanders’ style of play being one of the more frustrating to matchup against, this Metropolitan battle could tighten up in the next couple of days.

Tom Gulitti of the NHL was the first to report that Romanov and Puljujarvi would be back for game three.

Victor Hedman Out For Game Two

April 20, 2023 at 5:50 pm CDT | by Brennan McClain Leave a Comment

Mark Masters of TSN reports that all-star defenseman Victor Hedman will not dress in game two, as the Tampa Bay Lightning look to take a commanding lead against the Toronto Maple Leafs. In now the 10th playoff stretch throughout his career, this will only be the third game that Hedman has ever missed in the quest for Lord Stanley.

During the Lightning’s dominating win against the Maple Leafs Tuesday night, Hedman would only see the ice for about six and a half minutes, before leaving the rest of the game with an undisclosed injury. It appears the injury is substantial, as he will not be skating for the team in game two, and defenseman Haydn Fleury will take his place in the lineup.

Although Hedman would only play a handful of minutes, it did not appear to affect the Lightning all that much. However, with the potent offense of the Maple Leafs staring them down, Hedman is a major piece to be missing for Tampa Bay. A winner of the Conn Smythe Trophy during the 2020 Stanley Cup playoffs, Hedman is one of the better playoff performers of the past decade.

On the other side of the puck, the Maple Leafs now have an even better opportunity to knock off the three-time defending Eastern Conference Champions. As game two gets underway shortly, and putting aside the surefire game one victory, the Lightning will have an uphill battle without one of their top players in the lineup.

Boston Bruins Recall Oskar Steen

April 20, 2023 at 4:50 pm CDT | by Brennan McClain 2 Comments

Before their important game three against the Florida Panthers Friday evening, the Boston Bruins have announced they have recalled forward Oskar Steen on an emergency basis. So far through two games, the Bruins have been without forward Patrice Bergeron (upper-body), but have still managed to produce a deep rotation of 12 forwards.

Although managing to play about a quarter of the season in Boston last season, Steen was back to primarily back to playing for their AHL affiliate Providence Bruins for the majority of this year. In 64 games for Providence, Steen scored 14 goals and 17 assists, helping propel the baby Bruins to the Atlantic Division semifinals in the Calder Cup playoffs.

Without Bergeron in the lineup, the Bruins have found themselves in a tied series as they head into game three. They did manage to get out to an early lead in the series thanks to a 3-1 win against the Panthers on April 17th, but Florida bounced back in game two, beating the Bruins by a score of 6-3. In game one, Boston heavily relied on their Vezina candidate goaltender Linus Ullmark, who made 31 saves in 32 attempts.

As the Bruins look to take back the series, there is a chance that Steen will find himself in the lineup. Steen is another physical presence that Boston can throw into their active roster, and with strong possession numbers in his limited professional performance, Steen could help the Bruins control the puck more against a surging Panthers team.
