John Moore Out, Bruins To Debut Two Rookie Defensemen

When GM Don Sweeney and the Boston Bruins front office were looking ahead to this season, they were anticipating a strong starting six on defense with veteran depth and promising rookies in reserve. A quarter of the way through the season, the Bruins have yet to play a game with all six of their projected starters: Zdeno Chara, Charlie McAvoy, Torey Krug, Brandon Carlo, Kevan Miller, and free agent addition John Moore. Instead, the team has rotated through ten different defensemen due to continuous injury issues. Tonight, they’ll add two more.

In the Bruins’ Wednesday night game against the Colorado Avalanche, they lost captain Chara to an apparent knee injury. He joined McAvoy (concussion), Carlo (upper-body), Miller (hand), and rookie Urho Vaakanainen (concussion) on the shelf. Then today, Moore was unexpectedly absent from morning skate and the team announced that he was day-to-day with a lower-body injury of his own. The loss leaves the Bruins with just one starter – Krug – in the lineup and missing all of their regular right-side defenders. Krug and Matt Grzelcyk are the only active defensemen who played a game for Boston last season.

When the Bruins take on the Dallas Stars tonight – and likely Saturday at the Arizona Coyotes as well – they will roll out a defensive corps that includes three rookies. Jeremy Lauzon has skated in six games with Boston already and the team announced that Jakub Zboril and Connor Clifton will make their NHL debuts tonight. Zboril, 21, is a 2015 first-round pick who has been slow to develop but has been a capable shutdown defender in the AHL. Clifton, 23, was a college free agent out of Quinnipiac University who signed with the Providence Bruins last year and earned an NHL contract with his play. While all three rookies have shown promise, they hardly seem equipped to play the roles expected of them early on in their NHL careers. The current Bruins defensive figuration has just 667 career NHL games to their credit and just 262 not counting Krug. Boston needs some luck and strong outings by Tuukka Rask tonight and Jaroslav Halak tomorrow to survive this unbelievable injury bug.

Brian Elliott Out Two Weeks With Lower-Body Injury

When the Philadelphia Flyers recalled Alex Lyon from the AHL this morning, it was an indication that every was not alright with starter Brian Elliott. Elliott left the Flyers’ game against the New Jersey Devils last night after appearing to overextend himself going post-to-post in the third period. Elliott was then absent from practice today. While the exact ailment remains unclear, the team announced after practice that he suffered a lower-body injury and will be out approximately two weeks.

Neither Elliott nor the Flyers are strangers to injury. Elliott, 33, has missed more than 50 games due to injury in his NHL career, including 29 games last season alone. In his second year in Philadelphia, injuries have been a reoccurring issue for Elliott, particularly of the lower-body variety. Between Elliott missing time and Anthony Stolarz missing the whole 2017-18 season, Philadelphia was forced to lean on backup Michal Neuvirth, the rookie Lyon, and trade acquisition Petr Mrazek. A season later, only the names and roles have changed. This year it has been Neuvirth limited to just one game due to injury, Lyon hampered with injuries early on, and now another absence from Elliott, while preseason waiver pickup Calvin Pickard has had to stand in as the backup and now starter. With Stolarz and promising rookie Carter Hart also available, the Flyers continue to be saved by their depth these past two seasons, but would enjoy a stretch of health from their starter and primary backup at some point this season.

Through 14 appearances this season, Elliot is 6-7-0 with a .911 save percentage and 2.59 goals against average and he has improved as the season has worn on. His numbers are solid, but look incredible compared to the paltry performance of Pickard thus far. Pickard will have to step up over the next two weeks or more if the Flyers are to survive this stretch, or else Lyon will have to have another miraculous run like last season. Flyers beat writer Bill Meltzer also reports that Neuvirth skated yesterday and may potentially be able to return while Elliott remains sidelined. Whoever is able to take the reins in net in Philadelphia could be one of the team’s heroes this season. With a .500 record thus far, two weeks of poor goalie play could sink the team as they approach the one-third mark of the season.

Minor Transactions: 11/16/18

Friday night in the NHL brings six games across the league including several Eastern Conference teams travelling west. Tyler Seguin will welcome in his former team when Boston comes to Dallas, while Tyler Myers will do the same in Winnipeg when Jack Eichel and the Sabres come to town. As teams prepare, we’ll be here keeping track of all the minor moves.

  • Alex Lyon is back up with the Philadelphia Flyers after Brian Elliott suffered another injury, continuing what has become a trend for the club this season. Lyon didn’t get onto the ice during his earlier recall, meaning he’s still looking to make his 2018-19 debut at the NHL level. The 25-year old goaltender is 2-2-0 with a .910 save percentage in the minor leagues this season.
  • With Zdeno Chara flying back to Boston to be evaluated for his latest injury, the Bruins have recalled Connor Clifton for the first time. The former Quinnipiac University captain is in his second professional season and has four points through 14 games with the Providence Bruins. Clifton signed his first NHL contract in May, after finding just an AHL deal coming out of college.
  • The Columbus Blue Jackets needed some help from the minors while they dealt with the flu yesterday, but apparently are feeling better. Zac Dalpe and Jean-Francois Berube have been returned to the AHL while the team recalled Gabriel Carlsson once again. Columbus managed a win even without Artemi Panarin and Sergei Bobrovsky in the lineup, something Blue Jackets fans will be happy to see given their current contract situations.
  • After Jason Demers left with a lower-body injury last night, the Arizona Coyotes have recalled defenseman Robbie Russo from the minor leagues. Russo played 19 games for the Detroit Red Wings in 2016-17, but spent all of last season at the minor league level and has only played for the Tucson Roadrunners this year. The 25-year old defenseman can move the puck quickly, but hasn’t shown he can be a legitimate NHL option so far in his career.
  • The Washington Capitals won’t need to dress an emergency backup again tonight. The team has recalled rookie Ilya Samsonov from the AHL’s Hershey Bears to serve as the backup to now-starter Pheonix Copley. Samsonov, 21, is in his first season in North America and already making his first NHL call-up. The 2015 first-round pick has actually struggled in the AHL thus far, but nevertheless got the call over Hershey starter Vitek Vanecek. Samsonov flew to Denver to meet the team ahead of their game against the Colorado Avalanche. Defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler was the on-paper demotion to make room for Samsonov, but will remain with the team through their current road trip.

Minor Transactions: 11/15/18

It’s a busy Thursday night in the NHL with nine games on tap, and plenty will be focused on a prime Eastern Conference matchup between the Tampa Bay Lightning and Pittsburgh Penguins. Unfortunately both teams may be without key components as Andrei Vasilevskiy and Sidney Crosby are both dealing with injuries. As teams prepare for the weekend, we’ll be right here to keep track of all the minor moves.

  • The Edmonton Oilers have recalled Patrick Russell from the minor leagues, giving the Danish forward his first chance at NHL action. Russell has nine points in his first 11 games for the Bakerfield Condors this season, after really finding his footing at the professional level in 2017-18. The former St. Cloud State standout could give the Oilers another option up front, though it’s not clear yet whether he’ll be inserted right away.
  • Gavin Bayreuther is getting a chance with the Dallas Stars after plenty of solid work in the minor leagues, and could be part of a solution for the missing John Klingberg. Bayreuther has five points in seven games for the Texas Stars, and proved last season that he can be an effective puck-mover at the AHL level. Marc Methot has also been moved to injured reserve for the Stars, though that move is likely retroactive to Methot’s last game on November 1st.
  • The St. Louis Blues have placed Brayden Schenn on injured reserve and recalled Sammy Blais in his place. Blais started the season with the Blues, but went scoreless in eight games. The 22-year old forward has been fairly snake-bitten at the minor league level as well, registering just two points in nine games. Schenn’s IR stint is retroactive to November 3rd, meaning he can be activated at any time.
  • With the flu making its way through the Columbus Blue Jackets dressing room, the team has recalled Zac Dalpe and Jean-Francois Berube under emergency conditions. Artemi Panarin, Riley Nash and Sergei Bobrovsky are not expected to play tonight, while Gabriel Carlsson has been reassigned to the Cleveland Monsters. Dalpe has been excellent this season for the Monsters, scoring 12 goals and 19 points in just 14 games.
  • The Arizona Coyotes have a new face in the dressing room as Dakota Mermis has been recalled before tonight’s game against the Nashville Predators. The Coyotes moved Alex Goligoski to injured reserve to make room for Mermis, who was recently named captain of the Tucson Roadrunners.

New York Islanders Recall Michael Dal Colle

This season may be the last chance for Michael Dal Colle to prove that he can still be considered one of the New York Islanders top prospects, and now he’ll get an opportunity to show his skills at the NHL level. With the team dealing with injuries to Matt Martin, Andrew Ladd and Casey Cizikas—all three have been moved to injured reserve—they’ve decided to recall Dal Colle and Stephen Gionta from the AHL.

Dal Colle, 22, was selected fifth overall in the 2014 draft ahead of such established stars as William Nylander (8th), Nikolaj Ehlers (9th), Dylan Larkin (15th) and David Pastrnak (25th), and many other players making their mark in the NHL. Unfortunately, he has yet to work out for the Islanders and is still waiting to register his first NHL point. In fact, last season Dal Colle registered just 24 points in 60 AHL contests and finished behind three defensemen in scoring on the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. The 6’3″ forward hasn’t been able to find the offensive touch that led him to be so desirable in junior, though this season is off to a nice start. In 14 games with the Sound Tigers Dal Colle has 14 points, and may be finally rounding into form.

Still, he likely won’t get into the Islanders lineup tonight and will have to battle hard to change the early moniker of “draft bust” that has been applied to him somewhat prematurely. Big powerful forwards can often take a little longer to develop, and perhaps all Dal Colle needed was a little seasoning before becoming a difference maker in the NHL. The team could use one right now as they deal with injury to three physical players, especially given Dal Colle’s puck skills and still present offensive upside. The team is off to a better than expected start, and could use another secondary scoring option to push them over the top this season.

Overseas Notes: Merzlikins, Everberg, Bartulis, Boychuk

The Columbus Blue Jackets will apparently have another name to consider in net next season. The Swiss Hockey News reports that young goaltender Elvis Merzlikins is expected to make the jump to North America next year. Merzlikins, 24, was Columbus’ third-round pick in 2014 and has been a standout member of the NLA’s HC Lugano ever since. The Latvian keeper took over Lugano’s starting job in 2015-16 at just 20 years old and has performed admirably. So far this year, he has been especially impressive; though 16 appearances, Merzlikins holds a .932 save percentage and a 2.19 goals against average. Fortunately for him, Merzlikins is in the final year of his NLA contract and is reportedly bound for the next level once it expires. Given his impressive performance, Merzlikins is likely to compete for the starting role with the AHL’s Cleveland Monsters and push for NHL appearances. With only Joonas Korpisalo and untested Matiss Kivlenieks under team control beyond this season, the Blue Jackets face questions in net moving forward and hope Merzlikins could potentially provide some answers.

  • The Swiss Hockey News also relays the news that Dennis Everberg has quickly found a new home. Everberg cleared unconditional waivers and had his contract with the Winnipeg Jets terminated only this morning, but clearly had a new opportunity lined up. Everberg has signed with EV Zug of the NLA, with whom he is surely going to take a much larger role than he had relegated to the minors with Winnipeg. Ironically, Zug was in search of a top forward after another former NHL forward, Viktor Stalberg, departed the team for the KHL’s Avangard Omsk last month.
  • Oskars Bartulis continues to make the most of his post-NHL career. A third-round pick of the Philadelphia Flyers back in 2005, Bartulis played in 66 games with the team but could never quite stand out. After spending much of his time in North America down in the AHL, Bartulis returned to Europe in 2012. Almost immediately, he began establishing himself as one of the top shutdown defenders in the KHL. Even thouhg his play has tailed off somewhat, Bartulis spent the last three years as the captain of Admiral Vladivostok and is still well-respected in the league. When he did not sign a new contract this off-season, there were questions about whether he was done. Yet, he’s back for another season at the age of 31. The KHL reports that Bartulis has signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Kunlun Red Star and should fit in well on a roster that is chock full of talented former NHLers.
  • On the other end of the spectrum, former top NHL prospect Zach Boychuk has been released from his contract with the KHL’s Severstal Cherepovets. Boychuk had been disappointing this year, with just four points in 25 games. In his first season with Severstal, the team was not willing to wait any longer to see if his play improved. The long-time Carolina Hurricane has been overseas for three years now and was very effective just last season with HC Slovan Bratislava. It remains to be seen what the next step is in the career of the capable forward.

Dallas Forward Devin Shore Out With Lower-Body Injury

The Dallas Stars are having a hard time staying healthy. The team is already without top-six forward Alexander Radulov and defensemen John Klingberg, Marc Methot and Connor Carrick, not to mention they have yet to see either Stephen Johns or Martin Hanzal hit the ice this season. That list has grown yet again, as forward Devin Shore is now expected to miss time as well due to a lower-body injury. Stars head coach Jim Montgomery told the media that Shore is expected to miss a minimum of seven to ten days.

Shore, 24, was off to a hot start this season. The University of Maine product is tied for fifth on the team in scoring behind five goals and six assists and has frequently been skating on the Stars’ top line. While Shore still has ample room to grow into a more offensively involved player, his 50-point pace was easily making 2018-19 look like his best season yet. The 2012 second-round pick has finished in the low thirties in back-to-back 82-game seasons to begin his NHL career. The question now is whether Shore will be able to bounce back quickly and get back to his current scoring clip or if an extended absence or slow return could send him back toward that 30-point projection.

While Shore is out, the Stars will have to call upon their depth once again. The team recently recalled Denis Gurianov from AHL Texas and will likely ask he, Mattias Janmark, Gemel Smith, and free agency addition Blake Comeau to take larger roles. This could be an opportunity for 2018 re-draft Adam Mascherin to make his NHL debut as well. Dallas is in the bottom third in the league in scoring as is and will have to find some suitable replacement for Shore’s production while he remains sidelined.

Valentin Zykov Assigned To AHL On Conditioning Loan

Earlier this month the Carolina Hurricanes were testing the trade market for young forward Valentin Zykov, but apparently haven’t found a taker yet. Instead, the team today announced they will assign Zykov to the minor leagues on a conditioning loan, allowing him to get back on the ice with a professional team instead of watching from the press box or end of the bench. The 23-year old forward has played in 13 games for the Hurricanes this season, but is averaging fewer than 10 minutes of ice time. He’ll now get a chance to get his development back on track with the Charlotte Checkers.

Zykov, 23, was originally selected 37th overall by the Los Angeles Kings in the 2013 draft after a very successful rookie season in North America. Coming over from Russia to play for the Baie-Comeau Drakkar of the QMJHL, the talented forward scored 40 goals and was named both QMJHL and CHL Rookie of the Year. That shot his star and draft stock skyward, and many believed he was destined for greatness at the NHL level. Unfortunately, that success hasn’t come yet as Zykov has been limited in his NHL experience. After failing to find much offensive success in the AHL for the Kings, he was flipped to Carolina as part of a deal to acquire Kris Versteeg and joined the Checkers. In the years since, Zykov has only played 25 NHL contests and been given rare opportunities to really show what he can do offensively.

Still, his potential does pose something of a problem for the Hurricanes. Zykov would likely be claimed if the team tried to sneak him through waivers at this point, if only by a rebuilding team that believes they could take a chance with the former top prospect. Other teams around the league likely know that decision is coming, and are wary to trade any real assets to Carolina for his services. Instead, the Hurricanes will try to either spark his confidence or showcase his skills with a stint in the minor leagues where he will likely be given plenty of opportunity with the Checkers’ top line and powerplay unit. He can be kept in the minor leagues for two weeks.

Pacific Notes: Ducks, Quick, Chychrun

The Anaheim Ducks have dealt with more than their fair share of injuries over the past year or so. The team is still far from healthy, but finally full strength is within sight, particularly among their battered forward corps. The likes of Ryan Getzlaf, Ryan Kesler, and Patrick Eaves are healthy, and recent injuries like those to Jakob Silfverberg and Kalle Kossila have also run their course. Nick Ritchie and Ondrej Kase are on the mend and expected to be active sooner rather than later. Corey Perry (knee) and Carter Rowney (upper body) are still far from a return, but in terms of players the Ducks reasonably expected to be healthy, things are looking up. However, a full set of healthy forwards also brings with it some tough choices. While Anaheim has the flexibility to send the likes of Ben Street, Pontus Aberg, Sam Carrick, and Kiefer Sherwood – currently on the roster – to the AHL, they have to be concerned about whether there is enough ice time to go around for the more permanent pieces. Already, the team sent promising rookie Isac Lundestrom to the AHL today to bring up Kossila and fellow top prospects Sam Steel and Troy Terry are already down with the San Diego Gulls. As the team grows healthier, it it possible that they could explore returning rookie Max Comtois to his junior club, the QMJHL’s Drummondville Voltiguers. While Comtois has already played in ten games this season and tolled the first year of his contract, he cannot be sent to the AHL and could be better served getting guaranteed top-six minutes at the junior level than fighting for ice time with the Ducks. Comtois is currently sidelined, buying Anaheim some time on the decision, but with conceivably an upwards of 20 forwards expecting to see action in the NHL this season, eliminating even just one option by sending Comtois back to junior would help the Ducks with their impending roster crunch.

  • The Los Angeles Kings took another hit in net today with the news that backup goaltender Jack Campbell will be out four to six weeks with a torn meniscus. The team is already without starter Jonathan Quick due to the same injury and are left to lean on veteran Peter Budaj and rookie Cal Petersen for the time being. Fortunately, GM Rob Blake did assure the media later on that Quick remains on track to return sometime around the end of the month, per beat writer Curtis Zupke. Quick underwent surgery on October 31st and was given a timeline of roughly a month to return. So long as his rehab continues to progress positively, Quick could potentially be ready to return by the Kings’ November 30th clash with the division rival Calgary Flames. Yet, even in that best-case scenario, Budaj and Petersen will still be on the hook for the nine games between now and then.
  • In more immediate injury news, The Athletic’s Craig Morgan reports that Arizona Coyotes defenseman Jakob Chychrun is “probable” to make his season debut on Tuesday night against the Detroit Red Wings. Chychrun has been sidelined since late last season with a torn ACL in his right knee. The first-round pick was establishing himself as a reliable top-four defender prior to his injury and his return should come with an automatic starting spot, likely bumping Ilya Lyubushkin down to the minors and Jordan Oesterle from his starting slot.

Ottawa Senators Recall Forward Drake Batherson

The meteoric rise of Drake Batherson continues. A relative no-name just a few years ago, Batherson is now set to join the Ottawa Senators on his first NHL call-up as a first-year pro. The team announced that they have recalled Batherson from the AHL’s Belleville Senators and he could make his debut when the Sens host the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday.

Batherson, 20, was a fourth-round pick by Ottawa in 2017, merely the 121st overall pick. Batherson had completed just one full season in the QMJHL prior to being drafted, recording 58 points in 61 games for the Cape Breton Screming Eagles. Yet, Batherson was still included in the initial camp to compete for a spot on the Canadian World Junior roster. Against the odds, Batherson earned a spot and skated with the U-20 team at the World Juniors last January. Seemingly out of nowhere, Batherson tallied seven goals, tied for the second most in the tournament behind only American first-round pick Kieffer Bellows and tied for fourth-best in points for the Canadians. Batherson continued a strong campaign back in the QMJHL, totaling 77 points in 51 games between Cape Breton and the Blainsville-Boisbriand Armada, which was good enough to share eleventh place in league scoring. He then led all QMJHL skaters with an astounding 33 points in 22 postseason games for Blainville-Boisbriand, leading the team to an appearance in the league championship.

Some thought that Batherson may be unable to continue his impressive play after making the jump to the pro level this season. Instead, the rookie has 20 points through 14 games with Belleville, tied for second-best in the entire AHL. His 13 assists are additionally third in the league, while he leads the Senators across the board on offense by a wide margin. Ottawa hopes that Batherson can continue to find success against a new challenge, as he has for the past year or so. The Senators have won just three of their past eleven games and could use all the help they can get, especially if it comes from a young, potential future core piece. At this rate, Batherson is looking like just that.
