Brett Connolly Assigned To AHL

October 6, 2021 at 3:43 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 2 Comments

The Chicago Blackhawks have opened up a bit of cap space by assigning veteran forward Brett Connolly to the AHL today according to Mark Lazerus of The Athletic. The move comes after Connolly cleared waivers earlier today and will mean $1.125MM ($375K + the league minimum of $750K) of his $3.5MM cap hit will come off the books.

That still means the Blackhawks now have a cap penalty of $2.375MM for a player not even on their roster, obviously not an ideal situation for a team pushing the upper limit. Chicago has some flexibility thanks to Andrew Shaw’s LTIR status, but that means they will not accrue additional cap space through the season for a potential deadline acquisition.

For Connolly, it’s hard to imagine how quickly things have declined. In 2018 he was a Stanley Cup champion with the Washington Capitals, playing a key role for the team and scoring six goals in the postseason. The next season he would score a career-high 22 goals with the Capitals, setting him up for a nice payday in free agency. It came from the Florida Panthers, who gave him $14MM over four years on July 1, 2019. With that in hand, he got off to a nice start in Sunrise, scoring 19 goals and 33 points in 69 games before the season was shut down.

This year though was a completely different story. Connolly had just two goals and four points in 21 games with the Panthers before a deadline deal took him to Chicago. The Blackhawks took on his entire salary while also getting Riley Stillman and Henrik Borgstrom in the deal, but Connolly couldn’t find his way down the stretch. He scored one goal and two points in ten games for Chicago, and now finds himself assigned to the AHL.

Connolly is still only 29, but with another year on his deal after this one, it will be hard to trade him without sweetening the pot for a rebuilding team. Teams like the Ottawa Senators or Buffalo Sabres who are flirting with the cap floor (pending a Jack Eichel trade for the latter) seem like ideal fits, but it’s not clear at all if they are interested at this point.

AHL Exception Coming Into Play For CHL Talent

October 6, 2021 at 3:25 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

Back in July, Darren Dreger of TSN reported that the finishing touches were being put on an agreement between the AHL and CHL that would allow some ineligible players to spend the 2021-22 season in the professional ranks. Normally, players drafted out of the CHL are not eligible to play in the AHL until they are 20 years old. This one-time exception would only come into effect for those players who took part in at least 20 AHL contests during 2020-21 when their respective CHL teams were not operating.

While there has been no official announcement of the rule, the last few days have seen several transactions that suggest it is now in effect.

This week, the Anaheim Ducks and Colorado Avalanche assigned Jacob Perreault and Jean-Luc Foudy respectively to their AHL affiliates. Neither player would normally be able to report, given their OHL seasons are about to start. In fact, Perreault’s Sarnia Sting and Foudy’s Windsor Spitfires are set to play each other tomorrow evening on the league’s opening night. The junior league won’t have the talented forwards as both played more than 25 games in the AHL last season and will head back there to continue their development.

Today, the Philadelphia Flyers have completed a similar move, sending 19-year-old forward Tyson Foerster to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. Foerster played 24 games or the AHL last season, while his Barrie Colts were stuck in limbo like the rest of the OHL. The Flyers will be able to do the same thing with Zayde Wisdom who played 28 games for Lehigh Valley last season, though he is still out following his recent shoulder surgery and has not been reassigned yet.

These are all huge losses for the CHL, but pretty substantial gains for the AHL. Each young player has found success early on at the professional level, once again suggesting that there should be an exemption of some sort for those deemed exceptional moving forward. There’s obviously a reason why the Flyers, Ducks, and Avalanche feel the best thing for their development is playing at the AHL level, as they still did have the option to send them back to junior. One thing to point out is that those players loaned back to their junior clubs are ineligible for recall to the NHL all season except under emergency conditions, but one can assume that these expected players would be eligible for a call-up if necessary as they play in the AHL.

There are several other names that could find themselves in the AHL ahead of time, including Cole Perfetti of the Winnipeg Jets, Quinton Byfield of the Los Angeles Kings, and Donovan Sebrango of the Detroit Red Wings. Jan Mysak, who was also eligible for the AHL according to this exemption, was loaned back to the Hamilton Bulldogs of the OHL earlier this month while Ryan O’Rourke was sent back to the Soo Greyhounds early in Minnesota Wild camp.

Josh Ho-Sang Signs AHL Deal With Toronto Marlies

October 5, 2021 at 7:37 pm CDT | by Josh Erickson Leave a Comment

The Toronto Marlies signed forward Josh Ho-Sang to an AHL contract Tuesday night, per NHL insider Chris Johnston. The move comes after the Toronto Maple Leafs released Ho-Sang from his professional tryout contract.

Ho-Sang joined the Leafs this offseason on a PTO after he was left unqualified by the New York Islanders. Ho-Sang had been in the Islanders organization since they drafted him 28th overall in 2014.

The 25-year-old forward spent last season on loan in Europe. In nine games in the Swedish Hockey League, Ho-Sang scored two goals and one assist for three points. He split time between Orebro HK and Linkoping HC.

Ho-Sang has gotten into 53 NHL contests so far in his career, all with the Islanders. He hasn’t played an NHL game since 2018-19, spending his time in the AHL and SHL since then.

A skilled playmaker, Ho-Sang hopes to revitalize his career in the Maple Leafs’ organization. He had a strong camp, notching multiple points in the preseason. He’ll now need to excel on the Marlies’ roster before proving he can make an impact again at the NHL level.

With Ho-Sang signing an AHL deal, he does not need to be placed on waivers to be assigned to the Marlies. Toronto can sign him to an NHL contract and bring him up to the Maple Leafs at any time, however, they will need to waive him in order to send him back to the AHL if they wish.

Minor Transactions: 10/04/21

October 4, 2021 at 9:30 pm CDT | by Zach Leach Leave a Comment

While NHL training camp rosters are being thinned, AHL training camps are just getting started and with it comes opportunities for still-unsigned free agents to find a team for the coming season. While there have been many AHL tryouts and other such moves of late, here are some of the most notable “minor” transactions:

  • While NHL veteran Tim Schaller drew the headlines, the Bakersfield Condors have also signed Graham McPhee to a one-year contract. McPhee, 23, will stick around the Edmonton Oilers organization for another year, despite the team that drafted him never offering him an entry-level contract. McPhee split last season – his first pro campaign – between the Condors and the ICEHL’s Vienna Capitals. The former Boston College Eagle plays a hard-working game but still has room to develop his skill before he can challenge for NHL consideration.
  • The Chicago Wolves will have 14 players in camp on tryout agreements, several of whom are recognizable names. Coming off of NHL contracts, both Drake Rymsha and Luke Green will now have to perform in camp just to earn AHL deals. Rymsha, 23, actually played one game with the L.A. Kings last season but was not extended a qualifying offer and signed with the ECHL’s Fort Wayne Komets, but is looking to land in Chicago instead. Green, 23, was also not qualified after spending last season on loan in Finland, but is looking to make a comeback with the Wolves after failing to make a difference in the Winnipeg Jets organization.
  • After missing the 2019-20 season due to post-concussion syndrome, former San Jose Shark Rourke Chartier made his return to hockey last year with the Toronto Marlies. He will look to stay in the AHL and in Ontario as he has joined the Belleville Senators on a tryout offer. Chartier has been a consistent producer in the minors and at 25 still has some gas in the tank.

Tim Schaller Signs AHL Contract

October 4, 2021 at 3:43 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

The Bakersfield Condors have signed a veteran forward, adding Tim Schaller on an AHL contract. The 30-year-old spent last season with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on a similar minor league deal.

Once a regular in the NHL, Schaller spent the entire 2020-21 season in the AHL, scoring 18 points with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. That’s a far fall from 2017-18 when he played in all 82 games with the Boston Bruins, and is a surprising turn for a player that has suited up 276 times in the NHL. Schaller isn’t an offensive threat, with just 29 goals during that span, but had been considered a worthwhile bottom-six forward in the past, even signing a two-year deal with Vancouver in 2018 that carried an average annual value of $1.9MM.

It appears as though that period of his career is over though with this deal, though he could always ink an NHL contract at some point if the Edmonton Oilers deal with injury concerns. He’ll be a valuable asset to their AHL team for the time being, helping insulate the younger players in the organization while still providing good production at the minor league level.

Scott Wilson Signs AHL Contract

October 4, 2021 at 11:57 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

After attending the Seattle Kraken training camp on a professional tryout, Scott Wilson has settled for an AHL deal with the Charlotte Checkers for the upcoming season. The Checkers of course will be affiliated with the Kraken this season, along with the Florida Panthers, their primary NHL partner.

Wilson, 29, was an NHL regular as recently as 2017-18, but spent nearly the entire 2020-21 season on the Panthers taxi squad. He did get into eight games with the Syracuse Crunch, but was forced into a practice role for most of the year. That obviously left him scrambling for work this offseason after his one-year deal expired with Florida, and he’ll have to settle for an AHL contract for the first time in his career.

A veteran of 193 NHL games, Wilson was actually a regular in the Pittsburgh Penguins lineup during their 2017 Stanley Cup run, scoring six points in 20 games. Though not a dominant player in the minor leagues, he should give the Checkers a strong option up front this season and could even be in line for an NHL deal down the road should the Kraken or Panthers face injury issues. Remember, without a full minor league affiliate, the expansion team will have to delicately navigate the season with just a handful of call-up options.

New Jersey Devils Claim Mason Geertsen

October 4, 2021 at 10:38 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

Oct 4: The Devils have answered the question of where Geertsen fits into the roster, noting that he will play left wing tonight against the Washington Capitals in a preseason game. Geertsen has played forward in the minors for the past year and is now, according to Devils reporter Amanda Stein, comfortable at the position.

Oct 3: Waiver season is in full swing, with dozens of players exposed over the last few days. Today, the New Jersey Devils decided to select one of those players and add him to their organization. Mason Geertsen, who was waived by the New York Rangers has been claimed by New Jersey.

Geertsen, 26, has exactly zero NHL games played in his professional career but adds a level of physicality to the fringe of the Devils roster. Even the team’s press release suggests that his size and the fact that he “likes to play a tough, physical, and gritty game” is the reason the team went after him.

Interestingly enough, the Devils have had several chances to acquire Geertsen in the past but have passed them up. The minor league defenseman–who notably has been playing some forward in the AHL as well–has cleared waivers twice before, including in March of this year, and was an unrestricted free agent in 2019 after failing to receive a qualifying offer from the Colorado Avalanche, the team that drafted him back in 2013.

He ended up signing an AHL contract with the Rangers and spent a year and a half before earning his current two-year, two-way deal. When he did so, New York put him on waivers in order to keep him in the minor leagues and the Devils–and every other team in the league–passed.

They won’t this time, a curious decision given the added depth the Devils have acquired at the position this offseason. Dougie Hamilton, Ryan Graves, and Christian Jaros were brought in this summer, while Jonas Siegenthaler was retained after a deadline trade last season. It’s hard to see where exactly Geertsen fits in, though with Ty Smith’s recent injury there may just be a short-term need for some added depth.

If the Devils put Geertsen back on waivers, the Rangers will have a chance to reclaim him and send him directly to the minor leagues, should they be the only team to put in a claim.
