You can look at the Hawks inactivity a couple of ways. Davidson spent money last year on some vets. A couple have made them better, Tuevo and Bertuzzi. A couple didn’t help at all, Martinez and Maroon. One brought back a draft pick, Smith. And one was just a complete head scratcher from the beginning, Brodie. The Hawks right now have a blend of Middling priced vets, Too many to name, And a bunch of highly regarded prospects. The obvious thing to do was to go for the big prize FA, But the big prize FA has to want to come here and the Hawks just changed Coaches. So I can’t blame them for steering clear and that’s probably hindering trade possibilities too. So Davidson is doing the only thing he can- Play the kids. It’s the smart play. Signing more 4 million dollar guys to 4 year deals isn’t the answer and yes Donato was another head scratcher to me as I don’t think that ends well either but he was at least deserving for the effort he put in here so I can live with that one I guess and if he can do it again it’s even a steal. Was last year his breakout or a fluke? Who knows. But they’re doing what they need to do for now which is sign Bedard long term and save their money and keep weaponizing Cap Space until the big names sit up and take notice. Sometimes all you can do is nothing. With the new CBA eliminating Cap chicanery, Cap space might be even more important.
