Toronto Maple Leafs Closing In On Brad Treliving

May 30, 2023 at 8:50 pm CDT | by Josh Erickson 14 Comments

Per a report from TSN’s Darren Dreger Tuesday night, the Toronto Maple Leafs are expected to name Brad Treliving their new general manager “in the very near future.”

Treliving fills the seat vacated by Kyle Dubas less than two weeks ago after the team informed him they wouldn’t be renewing his contract. The Calgary Flames mutually parted ways with Treliving, who was also on an expiring contract, last month.

Treliving certainly checks off the experience box that Leafs president Brendan Shanahan was looking for in his general manager hire. The 53-year-old had spent nearly a decade in his post with Calgary after joining the team ahead of the 2014-15 season.

He also brings the experience of working in a Canadian market, although simply nothing compares to the pressure-cooker market that is Toronto. Treliving has made a number of shrewd trades and signings throughout his time in Calgary, although he’s had some significant misses as well.

The impending arrival of Treliving as general manager comes at a critical time for the Maple Leafs, who are looking to keep the band together as they aim to claw deeper into the playoffs. Treliving’s immediate focus turns to the contract situations of Auston Matthews, William Nylander, and Mitch Marner, who are all slated for unrestricted free agency in the next two years.

Looking at Treliving’s history, this is where he may shine. While his parting gifts to Calgary came in the form of long-term deals for Jonathan Huberdeau, MacKenzie Weegar, and Nazem Kadri that are too young to be judged, his body of work regarding contracts for his star players is stellar. He signed defenseman Mark Giordano to a six-year, $6.75MM deal in 2015, Johnny Gaudreau to the same contract a season later, and Dougie Hamilton to a five-year, $5.75MM deal in 2015 as well. All of those contracts provided solid value to Calgary in one way or another.

This story will be updated further as more details emerge.

Interesting situation he walks in to. Exciting to see some change and potential change in philosophy of roster construction. Also wondering if he plans to bring in a coach of his choosing or if he plans to keep Keefe.

Inject this right into my veins. A line of JT, Huby and bring back RoR and you’ve got the slowest highest paid skill line ever

I’m I going senile, or am I loosing it,I’m getting up there in age but I don’t see Doom and Gloom here at all. Look the Leaf’s have said that they want to keep the core together and the core player’s say that they want to stay. So either they price themselves out of Leaf’s market or they sign. As for the rest of this team how does it look. First I’d consider trading TJ Brodie, being in his last year of his deal why not get something back, and that 5mil in Cap relief. But if I’m not going senile this is how I see this, goaltending if they stick with Sammy and Woll that’s 4mil against the Cap. On the backend if they sign Scheen with Gio, Timmins, Lilygren, McCabe, and Rielly, that’s 6 defenders at a Cap hit around 14mil. If just 4 prospects can make the jump, Knies, Holmberg, McMann, Robertson, and others with Accari and Lafferty that’s 6mil for the bottom six. That’s about 25mil for 14 player’s. 45mil to keep the core together, with needing a left winger for the top line, a second line center, and a minute munching stud defender, I’m pretty sure that they could get everything they’ll need with 24mil in Cap space remaining. Like I say I’m either going senile or this team is in better shape than we thought. It’s all about getting that GM in place so they can get on with the business at hand. But I would still move a core player, to much talent not enough character player’s,in my opinion. But the biggest impact you can make for this team is behind the bench, Sheldon just has to go, enough of not being ready at puck drop, enough with this AHL blender coaching style, enough of Holl and Keerfoot. Just get the GM in place so that they can get on with building their team for next season. Cheerz

Right now the Leafs have $74.3 million in used cap for next year. This includes $5.6 million for Muzzin who cannot be transferred to LTIR until the season actually begins. Looks like you’re forgetting about Murray being on the books for next year. Maybe a team will take Brodie but it’s no guarantee.
Using up as much cap space as they have on 4 forwards hasn’t worked for the past 6 years so I doubt it works again going forward. One of the core 4 are going whether it’s this season or next.

Move on from Kweefe and “I don’t battle in corners” Nylander and maybe JUST MAYBE the leafs will be a real threat. Until the team is flawed.

He needs to do the impossible and rid themselves of JT’s bloated contract.
